UCF vs Temple Game Preview

Why Temple Will Win

Every once in a while a struggling team with a new head coach who’s looking to create an identity can find something to build off of.

Temple just happens to be amazing at generating sacks and coming up with third down stops.

While that might seem a bit small, it’s a big deal to rely on while the other parts are improving.

The D is third in the nation allowing teams to convert just 24% of the time, that stars with a run defense that’s stopping just about everyone cold, and that’s all a part of a pass rush that’s tied for the best in the nation.

Temple’s defense has kept games alive. It’s allowing an average of under 17 points per game, the defense leads the American Athletic Conference, and the game shouldn’t get out of hand, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why UCF Will Win

Temple hasn’t faced any sort of an offense like this.

Memphis has an offense, and it went for 331 yards in last week’s 24-3 win. Duke rolled up 500 yards in the 30-0 loss, but that’s been about it.

UCF is ripping through everyone on the ground, averaging 253 yards per game with two efforts of over 320 yards in two of the last three games.

The Knights might not be able to do that, but as long as it gets up early everything else should be fine.

Temple’s offense is sputtering. It’s among the least efficient in the nation in passing, there’s no running game, and the only scoring outbursts came against Lafayette and UMass.

What’s Going To Happen

UCF will get up early and coast from there. The defense might not be a rock – who gives up over 300 passing yards to Georgia Tech? – but it won’t have any issues to deal with.

Temple will throw for over 200 yards, but the ground game won’t go anywhere, it’ll turn it over at least twice, and the run defense get hit harder than it has all year.

UCF vs Temple Game Preview

Why UCF Will Win

Things aren’t going all that well if you’re getting whacked by 20 against USF.

Temple has had its moments – beating Memphis was stunningly nice – but it wasn’t even in the game against Cincinnati and it managed to be the FBS team to break an ugly USF losing streak.

The offense isn’t moving the chains, the defense can’t stop anyone from running, and UCF is about to make this as simple as possible.

The Knights came up with a very, very important win over Memphis last week to keep its bowl hopes alive, and they did it by blowing off the struggling passing game and running a finally healthy Isaiah Bowser for 111 yards.

Temple just gave up 421 rushing yards to USF after allowing 279 to Cincinnati.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Temple Will Win

So what’s going right lately for Temple? Not much, but the run D should be able to sell out with UCF not able to do much of anything with the passing attack since QB Dillon Gabriel went out hurt.

Mikey Keene is giving it the old college try, but there’s nothing happening down the field and he has five interceptions since taking over and just four touchdown passes. Joey Gatewood went 2-for-2 with a score against Memphis, but again, this UCF passing attack is a shadow of its former self.

Temple absolutely has to take the ball away. It’s two wins came in the two games it forced multiple turnovers. UCF hasn’t been that bad at holding on to the ball, but it gave it up three times against Cincinnati and twice to Navy in the last four games.

What’s Going To Happen

UCF has yet to come up with a road win, but it was close in the losses to Louisville and Navy.

This is when the defense has to rise up to help the cause. Temple will be better than it’s been in a few weeks – the O will show a little balance – but Bowser will take over the Knight offense and the other side will be just good enough to get off the field on two key late Owl drives.

Why Temple Will Win

The UCF defense isn’t good at playing defense.

It’s trying to keep it all together after losing a slew of parts this offseason, and its job is to simply hold serve so the amazing offense can do what it does.

It’s getting rocked for close to 475 yards per game with a run defense that’s not great at holding up against teams that commit to the ground attack. The secondary allowed over 200 yards in every game, it’s giving up 284 yards per game on average, and overall it’s not great at getting off the field.

Temple’s offensive line should keep the Knights out of the backfield and should control the clock. UCF can strike quickly, but the Owls have to hold on to the ball for close to 35 minutes – they can do that.

Week 11 Schedule, Predictions, Lines

Why UCF Will Win

The UCF offense has been absolutely unstoppable.

Okay, so Tulsa came up with a few key stops, and Memphis was able to survive, but this thing is a yardage machine that’s ripping off big plays and production in chunks.

How amazing is the attack? UCF is 18th in the nation in rushing, No. 1 in passing, and overall it’s arcading almost 60 more yards per game than the second-best offense in America, North Texas.

It’s balanced, it’s explosive, and it’s way too much for Temple to keep up with. This isn’t the Owl team of the last several years – it has allowed over 1,500 yards in the last three games, and it’s about to give up well over 500 more.

CFN College Football Experts Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, the UCF defense isn’t good at playing defense …

But it’s improving.

It’s never going rot be a brick wall, but it held up well against the good Houston attack, and it wasn’t bad against a dangerous Tulane offense.

Temple will throw well, and it’ll score enough to hang around, but one burst of UCF points will be enough to put this away in the third quarter.
