It sounds easy, but this isn’t a San Diego State team built to come up with any sort of big comeback or work out of its comfort zone. It got pushed just a wee bit by San Jose State and had to rally back, and that was just a 19-13 double overtime win.

As good as the Aztec defense is, it hasn’t played anyone who can throw. Utah is as close to a high-powered passing game as it gets on the schedule, if it’s not New Mexico State and the 326 yards it threw for.

Jake Haener and the Fresno State offense need to be sharp from the start, and the great pass rush – the Bulldogs lead the nation in tackles for loss – has to take over on third downs. But …

San Diego State makes you play its style.

The offense might not do anything great, but the ground game is terrific, the run defense is a brick wall, and everything else falls into place from there.

The punting game leads the nation averaging 46.6 yards per kick, the team always owns the turnover battle, and forget about converting on third downs.

Fresno State turns the ball over way too much and gets hit with too many penalties. You have to be perfect to beat the Aztecs, and Fresno State isn’t perfect.

Don’t expect any sort of a firefight. San Diego State will do what it does to make this a grind, and Fresno State will have to be patient.

It’s going to be about field position, turnovers, and dealing with the tempo, and San Diego State will do that just a wee bit better.

Why San Diego State Will Win

There weren’t any issues in the first meeting a few days ago – a 67-53 Aztec win.

The defense clamped down throughout, the offense was measured against the good Fresno State D, and there weren’t a whole lot of issues for a team that doesn’t give away anything easy.

How air tight are the Aztecs lately? They haven’t turned the ball over in the double-digits in any of the last four games and aren’t likely to have any issues with mistakes against the turnover-prone Bulldogs.

Fresno State was able to keep the score at its level in the loss.

Yeah, San Diego State is better at the slow-paced defensive thing, but Fresno State was able to keep it relatively within range. That only works if the offense is able to go on a spurt – which teams aren’t able to do against the Aztecs – but it’s not going to get out of hand.

As long as the Bulldogs can win the rebounding battle again and be a little sharper from the outside, they’ll have a shot late.

It’ll be another good defensive battle, and it’ll be another showcase for how San Diego State does this better.

Fresno State isn’t going to hit the threes consistently enough to take advantage of those few moments when there’s an opening to take control.

Why San Diego State Will Win

The Aztec defense continues to be stifling.

No one has scored more than 72 points and only three teams got to 70 or over. San Diego State manages to steal everything, it’s among the best teams in the nation in scoring defense, and teams are only hitting 39% from the field.

There were problems in the two games against Utah State back in mid-January, but shooting from three hasn’t been a problem and when the team can get to the free throw line, forget it. Fresno State isn’t good enough from three and doesn’t shoot well enough to get back in the game if the Aztecs get up early.

Fresno State is playing well over the last few weeks because it can play a little bit of D, too.

It’s not shutting down teams to a dead stop like San Diego State is, but it’s been able to clamp down a bit on the defensive boards, it’s been great at guarding the three, and it’s built to hang around in a game like this as long as it can slow things down to a stop.

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, Fresno State has been strong lately, but that’s because it played New Mexico and Air Force in the back-to-back format to get to the four wins in the last five games.

San Diego State will lock down hard from the start and be in control throughout.
