ESPN College GameDay picks Notre Dame at Clemson and all the big Week 10 games

Who do you have winning this weeks biggest games?

As they do every week, [autotag]ESPN College GameDay[/autotag] is on the road to see the top game of the week, as they landed in Tuscaloosa for the LSU at Alabama matchup.

Even though they aren’t with Notre Dame and Clemson, the crew of Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee, and Kirk Herbstreit were joined comedian Nick Bargatze, who has hosted Saturday Night Live along with having a Netflix special. A bit of a weird picks as Bargatze doesn’t have an affiliation with Alabama, but he’s funny.

Find out who each of them picked to win this week, as they didn’t all agree on who will win between the Fighting Irish and the Tigers this weekend.

Why North Texas Will Win

Look at North Texas rising up and coming up with something big.

Rice shocked UAB, and just as it seemed like the program was about to make a nice step forward, the Mean Green – for them – pitched a relative defensive gem with a 30-24 win.

There’s good pressure coming from the front, and now it gets to go against a Southern Miss offense that’s an absolute disaster.

The Golden Eagles haven’t come close to running for 100 yards in any of the last six games, they’re dead last in the nation in scoring, they’re among the worst in the nation at keeping defenses out of the backfield, and North Texas might look like the 1985 Bears against this bunch.

Why Southern Miss Will Win

It’s not like the North Texas is all that great.

It didn’t dominate Rice, but it was good enough to get the win. Overall, it can be thrown on without too much of a problem. It’s giving up 8.5 yards per throw, it’s only picked off four passes – just one in the last seven games, and Southern Miss has to take advantage of all of it.

The defense should be able to get off the field.

There might be a ton of problems on both sides of the ball, but Southern Miss is great at third down defense and overall it’s not getting gouged in any one way. This is the week the defense rises up to overcome the miserable offense.

It’s not going to be anything beautiful, but at home in a turnover-filled game, the USM fans will take it.

Charlotte is 10th. It knows how to control games.

Rice doesn’t do nearly enough defensively to come up with big plays, and the offense isn’t explosive enough to pick up the slack. It has to win by control, shortening the game, and hoping to be around to take over in the end.

Charlotte might not have a great defense – it’s a big, big problem – but it can control games, too. In this case, it’s going against an O that’s not going come up with enough big moments to bust the 49ers out of their style.

Charlotte will get back after a rough run of three road games after the last four – all losses.

Well there we go.

Marshall is on a three-game winning streak with the running game kicking it all in against FIU, the passing game rolling against North Texas, and with the turnovers not quite as bad after losing to Middle Tennessee with six giveaways.

Florida Atlantic’s offense is too inconsistent. The offensive line allows too many plays behind the line, the running game hasn’t been able to do enough against anyone but the mediocre, and now it deals with a Marshall D that generates a whole lot of pressure.

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

Which offense will show up?

When it’s balanced and the ground game is rocking, Florida Atlantic wins. When it gets stuffed, it has a problem.

It’s 4-0 when getting to close to 200 yards on the ground – and it beat UTEP last week even though it struggled to do anything offensively. Marshall stuffed FIU, but gave up over 200 rushing yards in four straight games before last week.

The defense has been great at taking the ball away over the last few games, it’s +2 on the year in turnover margin, and it only had real issues with turnovers once, going -3 in the loss to UAB.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s the battle for the Conference USA East title … for now, at least until WKU has more to say about it.

Both teams have been wildly inconsistent and both have a ton of problems, but Marshall’s offense will be stronger on the road to overcome a rough day by the run D.

The Monarchs are overcoming issues with enough takeaways to get by.

The defense has been good enough to keep the team in games – there was close loss after close loss before finally getting over the hump with a win over Louisiana Tech.

The run defense has been outstanding, and it should be able to stuff FIU to a dead stop. The Golden Panther offense has failed to hit 300 yards in each of the last two games as the season keeps getting worse.

FIU has to overcome its problems with lots and lots of takeaways.

Old Dominion has turned the ball over two or more times in five straight games and has yet to win the turnover margin. There’s a whole lot going right as the team is starting to play better, but it all goes away if it makes a slew of mistakes.

FIU doesn’t generate turnovers with just four takeaways, but the defense can get behind the line and there are just enough stops against the mediocre attacks to potentially be okay.

The passing game will push the ball down the field, Old Dominion has no downfield attack, and the hope has to be for the O to be more explosive.

Can Old Dominion make it two in a row? It’s playing a team its own size without the defensive toughness to hold up. More importantly in this, FIU doesn’t take the ball away enough to matter.

What’s the team doing that’s so right? It’s getting a nice balance on offense, it’s moving the chains, it’s among the best teams in the country at not getting flagged, and it’s amazing against the run.

It doesn’t screw up and it hasn’t allowed more than 100 yards rushing in six of the last seven games.

UTEP can throw, but it gets hit with a whole lot of flags, and it’s among the worst teams in the nation in turnover margin. It has to be perfect to win this, and it won’t be.

The Miners have the offensive balance to give the UTSA defense some problems.

It’s versatile – it threw well over the last two weeks when the running game wasn’t rumbling – and it’ll try pounding away to set everything else up.

They’re terrific at grinding the game down and controlling the clock – they’re owning the time of possession battle – and comes from a defense that’s the best in Conference USA and is outstanding on third downs.

No one’s running well on this group – no one has moved from more than 131 rushing yards – and the D hasn’t allowed more than 300 yards in any of the last five games.

UTEP beat a whole bunch of bad teams. It has yet to come up with a win over anyone who’ll come close to going bowling, and it lost to Boise State and Florida Atlantic.

The D did a solid job last week against the Owls, and the offense cranked up 442 yards, but it wasn’t enough.

UTSA is great against the run, too, and it’s also terrific at controlling the time of possession battle. Again, it just doesn’t screw up enough to lose this as it all but takes the Conference USA West title.

Arkansas State can throw, and it doesn’t it very, very well.

Appalachian State has a strong all-around defense, and it hasn’t allowed over 300 yards, but it’ll give up well over 200 to an Arkansas State offense that has to throw to keep up.

At home, the Red Wolves have to bomb and keep bombing. It’s not going to slow down the Mountaineer running game, but it has to provide a push with the best passing game in the Sun Belt.

There’s still a possible bowl game to play for, but it’s almost certainly not happening without a win here.

The Warhawks hit a snag with a blowout loss to Appalachian State, but that doesn’t stop all the positives for a team that has a whole lot of problems.

Forget about third downs on both sides of the ball, and the pass defense is a rumor, but the team doesn’t beat itself. There aren’t a lot of flags – there aren’t any – and winning the turnover margin cures a lot of ills.

Texas State is almost as bad on third downs and it screws up a whole lot with turnovers and flags.

Why Texas State Will Win

The Bobcats are struggling more and more offensively, but they need to run well to pull up fast.

ULM has been hammered by teams that commit to the ground game. It allowed 250 rushing yards or more in four of the last five games, and Texas State has to give it a shot.

It only got to 200 yards once, and it was the win over an okay South Alabama team.

They ran the ball 48 times against the Jaguars, and won. They ran 44 times against FIU, and won. They ran 44 times against Incarnate Word, and lost, but it was a fun fight.

Offenses have run on ULM 42 times or more in four of the last five games.

What’s Going To Happen

No, really. How is ULM doing this?

It absolutely has to come up with takeaways to make everything else easier. It came up with three turnovers against South Alabama, Liberty and Jackson State and won. It came up with three in the opener against Kentucky and lost – but that was Kentucky – and it generated a total of two in the other four games and lost.

Texas State is -7 in turnover margin with 12 giveaways in the last four games.

Why Troy Will Win

Troy’s run defense is terrific, and that’s partially because the pass rush is among the best in the country. The South Alabama offensive line is good in pass protection, but it’s not good enough to deal with what’s coming.

The deadly combination of Javon Solomon and Richard Jibunor are too good and too relentless for the nation’s leading team in tackles for loss and isn’t far off in sacks.

The offense has enough balance and versatility to keep everything moving, but it’s that defensive front that has to take over right away and get the Jaguar O off the field.
