Potential Hurricane Henri could threaten PGA Tour’s Northern Trust with landfall Sunday

Henri is predicted to grow to hurricane strength and make landfall Sunday east of Liberty National in New Jersey.

The PGA Tour’s first FedEx Cup Playoff event, the Northern Trust, is near the western edge of the projected cone for Tropical Storm Henri, which is predicted to become a hurricane before it reaches landfall Sunday morning.

The National Hurricane Center reported Friday morning that Henri was several hundred miles off the coast of Georgia and moving north with sustained winds of 55 mph and gusts reaching 65.

The forecasted track has the center of the storm reaching landfall Sunday afternoon. Tropical storm winds are predicted to arrive Saturday night. The projected cone stretches from Long Island to Maine and is likely to shift one way or another as the storm approaches land.

The Northern Trust is at Liberty National in New Jersey, sitting tight to the water just across the bay from New York and the Statue of Liberty. The PGA Tour has not yet announced any schedule change for the tournament.

A combination of storm surge, damaging winds and heavy rain could bring serious damage from Henri.

The surge along Long Island and up into Rhode Island could reach 2 to 4 feet, while the Jersey Shore could see 1 to 3 feet of surge, the National Hurricane Center said. Winds were up to 65 mph as it was spinning about 800 miles south-southwest of Nantucket, Massachusetts, as of Friday morning.

Rainfall of 2 to 5 inches was expected in southern New England, with some isolated patches of up to 8 inches, possibly causing flash flooding.

Much of the eastern part of Long Island and coastal Connecticut and Rhode Island were under hurricane watches, while the coast closer to New York City was under a tropical storm watch.

“Everybody along the Long Island area and New York City needs to be watching,” said Da’Vel Johnson, a National Weather Service meteorologist in New York.

If Henri disrupts the tournament, it won’t be the first time. In 2011, Hurricane Irene made landfall and forced the cancellation of the final round of the Barclays, as the tournament was then known. It was then played at Plainfield Country Club in N.J., and the event was abbreviated after 54 holes with Dustin Johnson the winner. Plainfield was flooded in that storm.

Henri follows on the heels of Tropical Storm Fred, which made landfall in Florida earlier this week before moving Northeast and drenching several states along its path to the northeast. USA TODAY reported that North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper declared a state of emergency after Fred caused flooding and left two people dead with 17 missing.

Typhoon expected to hit near Tokyo on Tuesday, could make for a soggy start to Olympic men’s golf competition

Several inches of rain could fall in Tokyo during the tropical storm, leaving soggy conditions in its wake at Kasumigaseki Country Club.

The Olympic golf competition may be in for a soggy start, as the men are scheduled to begin play Thursday just days after a weak typhoon is predicted to make landfall Tuesday north of Tokyo.

Tropical Storm Nepartak is a mid-grade tropical storm by U.S. categorizations, the Associated Press reported. It could dump several inches of rain on Kasumigaseki Country Club northwest of Tokyo, which is on the eastern, Pacific Ocean-facing side of Japan. Maximum gusts have approached 70 mph, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported, with sustained winds of about 45 mph.

“It is a tropical storm of three grade out of five, so you shouldn’t be too much worried about that, but it is a typhoon in Japan interpretation,” Tokyo Games spokesman Masa Takaya said. “This is the weakest category, but this is still a typhoon so we should not be too optimistic about the impact of the course (of the storm).”

The storm, which is approaching the island nation from the east, is predicted to be gone from the area before the men tee off Thursday morning. But the golf course’s drainage could be tested, and there is a high probability of more rain throughout the next two weeks. The men play July 29-August 1, and the women play August 4-7.

Report: Texas’ game with Oklahoma postponed for a second time

According to Jon Rothstein, the Texas-Oklahoma basketball game has been postponed to Thursday. A date and time have yet to be announced.

Just when you thought COVID-19 was the only thing that could delay sporting events, mother nature reappeared.

According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, the Texas-Oklahoma basketball game has been postponed by a night. This marks the second consecutive day the matchup has been delayed.

Originally scheduled for Tuesday, the inclement weather sweeping the nation has moved it to Thursday. A date and time have yet to be announced.

The Longhorns were also supposed to play against Iowa State on Thursday, a make-up game postponed due to COVID-19 complications in the Cyclones’ program. Now, a second make-up date will be needed.

It will be a quick turnaround after the Oklahoma matchup, as No. 13 West Virginia will be in town on Saturday afternoon. In the current climate college basketball is in, teams must be able to adapt and be willing to play games whenever they can.

Texas is 13-5 overall and 7-4 in the Big 12. Thursday’s hopeful matchup with Oklahoma is an important one, with the Sooners looking to sweep the Longhorns for the first time since the 2014-2015 season.

Oklahoma-Texas game could be moved due to inclement weather

The basketball game set for Tuesday night between the Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns could be impacted by winter storms.

The 2020-21 college basketball season has seen its fair share of games moved, canceled, or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However,  the weather could force a new round of games being moved or postponed. On Tuesday the Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball team is set to host their rivals, the Texas Longhorns, at Lloyd Noble Center.

The Sooners are looking to sweep their rivals to the south of Red River after taking game one in Austin, 80-79. The game is set for Tuesday night but the winter storms across Oklahoma and Texas might prevent the game being played as scheduled.

Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman tweeted it is unclear at this time if the Longhorns will even travel to Norman for the game.

Most airports around the state have canceled all flights due to the amount of ice and snow on the ground. With more expected, it could be tough sledding. Sooners head coach Lon Kruger will speak to the media this morning, we are hoping for some clarification on the game.

Can you spot the weather balloon amid the clouds?

The accompanying image was shared via Twitter on Monday by the Little Rock, Ark., office of the National Weather Service, along with the question: “Can you spot the Weather Balloon?

How many relish the challenge when a nature or weather quiz appears in your social media feeds?

The accompanying image was tweeted Monday by the Little Rock, Ark., office of the National Weather Service, along with the question:

“Can you spot the Weather Balloon? This was about 1 minute after release, nicely camouflaged beneath the altocumulus this evening.”

NWS Little Rock

As quizzes go, this isn’t a difficult challenge for anyone with decent eyesight. But perhaps the point of the NWS Little Rock post was to reveal the beauty of altocumulus cloud formations, parallel bands or clumpy mid-level, gray-shaded clouds typically associated with settled weather.

The formations, which can be strikingly beautiful, sometimes span enormous swaths of sky at an altitude between 7,000 and 23,000 feet.

Writes the U.K.-based Weather Online: “They are white and/or gray in color with generally shadowed parts or undersides and often show a waved aspect.

“They may be well shaped by high winds into lentels or rippled wave patters and might appear as a pancake tower or like an UFO, often sharply outlined, but they may also become partly fibrous and diffuse.”

The quiz answer, if anyone should require confirmation, appears in the image posted below.

Weather forecast for Dolphins’ Week 15 matchup versus Patriots

The Miami Dolphins will be home once again this weekend for another showdown against a west coast team.

The Miami Dolphins are set to play their final home game of the season tomorrow afternoon against their hated rivals, the New England Patriots. This will serve as a rematch between these two teams from Week 1 of the 2020 season and while Miami would have loved to get their chance to welcome New England to the hot, sticky confines of Hard Rock Stadium in early September, getting New England this late in the game will undoubtedly still keep the Dolphins’ climate in South Florida on the forefront of everyone’s minds.

How much of an issue does the weather figure to be tomorrow afternoon? The good news is there’s not much rain in the forecast, which means the Dolphins won’t be forced to play ground and pound with the Patriots. Given that approach plays into the Patriots’ hands, the Dolphins can rest easy knowing that won’t be a forced audible to the game plan.

But what about the rest of the forecast? Here’s the latest update for tomorrow’s kickoff:

Location: Hard Rock Stadium — Miami Gardens, FL
Kickoff: 1:00 PM EST

  • High Temperature: 79 degrees
    • Feels like: 82 degrees
  • Percent rain: 10%
  • Humidity: 62%
  • Wind: 9 mph

The high in Foxborough, Massachusetts today is 34 degrees — and the high since Monday is 39. So this will be a big temperature shift for New England and could potentially play a factor in conditioning towards the end of the game. And with the Patriots playing a “grind it out” style of football, knowing that they may be out of gas come crunch time is a helpful boost to the Dolphins’ cause. Of course, Miami will need to keep things close for much longer than that in order to see them positioned to wear out the Patriots. But there’s little reason to think that the home field advantage the Dolphins are set to enjoy is going to be anything less than a very real variable in tomorrow’s contest.

Play suspended at 75th U.S. Women’s Open on a stormy Sunday in Houston

Play was suspended due to dangerous weather at the 75th U.S. Women’s Open at 9:10 a.m. local time.

HOUSTON – World No. 1 Jin Young and amateur Kaitlyn Papp didn’t make it off the first tee box on Sunday morning before play was suspended due to dangerous weather at the 75th U.S. Women’s Open at 10:10 a.m. ET (9:10 a.m. local time). Lydia Ko looked up in shock on the range at Champions Golf Club when she heard the blast through her AirPods.

A total of six groups had yet to tee off before play was halted.

On Saturday, USGA officials moved up tee times for Sunday with the final round starting at 8:45 a.m. ET (7:45 a.m. local). Players were again starting on the 1st and 10th tees of Champions Golf Club’s Cypress Creek Course.

Former No. 1 and 2018 U.S. Women’s Open champion Ariya Jutanugarn managed to birdie the first hole to pull to even par, four strokes behind leader Hinako Shibuno. Amateur Linn Grant is 1 under on the day through three holes and in a share of 14th.

The USGA’s official forecast calls for additional storms to move into the Houston area around lunchtime as a cold front makes its way in. Rainfall totals for the day were predicted to be half an inch.

The storms are expected to clear for Monday, when temperatures are expected to drop and a strong, gusty wind comes in from the north.
