Rondé Barber’s Hall of Fame nod cements legacy of Bucs’ 2002 defense

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ championship defense of 2002 now boasts four Hall of Fame players

The ’85 Bears? Three Hall of Fame defenders.

The 2000 Ravens? Two.

Only the “Steel Curtain” defense of the Steelers in the 1970s boasted four gold jackets until the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ championship unit from 2002 joined them Thursday night.

Ronde Barber is No. 4 for that Bucs defense, joining former teammates Derrick Brooks, Warren Sapp, and John Lynch in Canton as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s 2023 class.

A semifinalist for six years, and a finalist the last three, Barber finally broke through, as his rare combination of versatility, big-play ability, and longevity was recognized at long last by the voters.

Anyone who watched the Bucs’ defense that year should remember their rare dominance, which included being the first unit to lead the league in total defense, points allowed, and interceptions since that 1985 Bears squad. Tampa Bay allowed an opponent passer rating of just 48.4, which was slightly higher that what the rating would be if that opposing quarterback spiked the ball into the ground on every snap (39.6). They scored nine defensive touchdowns that year, playoffs included.

That dominance culminated in one of the most epic Super Bowl performances in history. Despite facing the NFL’s No. 1 offense, Tampa Bay steamrolled their way to their first Lombardi Trophy, intercepting league MVP Rich Gannon a Super Bowl-record five times, returning three for touchdowns in a 48-21 victory.

That’s right, the Bucs’ top-ranked defense actually outscored the NFL’s top-ranked offense in the Super Bowl. One of the Oakland Raiders’ three garbage-time touchdowns came on a blocked put, leaving Gannon and the offense with just two trips to the end zone, compared with three for the Tampa Bay defense.

It was the exclamation point on one of the most dominant seasons the NFL has ever seen from a defense, a group that had future Hall of Famers at every level: Sapp in the trenches, Brooks in the middle, Lynch on the back end, and Barber literally everywhere in between.

There’s even a strong case to be made for Simeon Rice, a disruptive edge rusher who racked up 122 career sacks in 12 seasons, for his own spot in football heaven.

But now that Barber is finally getting his bronze bust, that 2002 Bucs defense can fully take its rightful place as one of the greatest in NFL history.

Devin White on criticism from Warren Sapp: ‘People that know football know what was going on’

Hear what Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker had to say in response to Hall of Famer Warren Sapp criticizing his level of effort

After declining the opportunity on Wednesday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Devin White spoke with the media during Thursday’s open locker room period.

White was asked about recent criticism from Bucs legend and Hall of Famer Warren Sapp regarding his effort in last Thursday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

While he voiced his respect for Sapp and his accomplishments during his tenure in Tampa Bay, and made it clear that Sapp has the right to speak his mind, the three-time defensive team captain insinuated that Sapp might not have known what he was looking at on the play in question (via Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times):

After a strong start that earned him NFC Defensive Player of the Month honors for September, White has struggled alongside the rest of his defense since. The team is riding a three-game losing streak heading into Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Warren Sapp helps coach up Bucs’ defensive line at OTAs

Hall of Famer Warren Sapp lent a hand during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ recent practices

If you want to learn a thing or two about being a dominant defensive lineman in the NFL, you might as well look to somebody who has a gold jacket for doing just that.

Those in attendance at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ organized team activities this week got some hands-on help from one of the greatest to ever wear a Bucs jersey, as Hall of Famer Warren Sapp lent a hand to the defensive coaching staff.

“[Warren Sapp and I] have a good relationship, and we wanted to bring him in to teach the [defensive] line a few things,” Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said. “Coach [Kacy] Rodgers and Coach ‘Lo’ (Lori Locust) were all for it. So, I thought it would be a good idea to learn from a guy that’s done it recently, or more recently than the coaches have, and it would be good for the guys to hear and see a different perspective.”

Tampa Bay’s all-time franchise leader with 77 career sacks, Sapp has been a regular visitor to Bucs practices over the years, remaining close to the franchise he helped lead to their first Lombardi Trophy back in 2002.

Eagles DT Javon Hargrave on a historic pace through the first 3 games of the 2021 season

Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Javon Hargrave on a historic pace to start the 2021 season

Javon Hargrave has found his groove through three weeks of his second season with the Eagles, and as the Birds start preparation to face the Chiefs, the game-wrecking defensive tackle is on a historic pace.

According to Eagles public relations guru, John Gonoude, Hargrave is the first NFL defensive tackle since Warren Sapp in 1999, to log 15+ tackles and 4.0+ sacks in the first 3 games of the season.

That season, Sapp logged 4 passes defended, 4 forced fumbles, 12.5 sacks, 41 total tackles, and 13 tackles for loss on the way to being named All-Pro and Defensive Player of the Year.

We’ve previously predicted that Hargrave would smash the 23 tackles for loss that T.J. Watt recorded in 2020 to lead the league, and through three games, Hargrave is on pace for 27.5 tackles for loss, and almost 21 sacks.

Warren Sapp put Patriots rookie Christian Barmore on blast before the draft

Well this is interesting!

Prior to the 2021 NFL draft, analyst and retired defensive lineman Warren Sapp provided some analysis that might have provided important context for Christian Barmore’s fall out of the first round.

He didn’t fall that far, with the New England Patriots trading up to 38th overall in the second round to get the defensive tackle. But many expected him to land in the first round with a clear claim as the top player at his position. Sapp’s comments on Barmore paint a clearer picture with so much skepticism surrounding the Crimson Tide product.

“Let’s wait for the evaluation. Because what I saw when I went over to the Yo Murphy Performance (Compound) was not even third-round material,” Sapp said during an appearance on the Pewter Report podcast.

” … I had a chance to get him on the football field and walk him through the five steps to the quarterback, and if they’re telling me that this is a first-round guy then Aaron Donald really did get blocked 70 percent of the time on the double teams. … I just promise you this, if these eyes right here that you’re looking at is telling a lie about talent, then shoot me. I won’t talk anymore football. If this kid’s a first-round pick then I won’t talk football (on social media) for a full year. … Nothing personal, but I’ll take off a whole year if Barmore is a first-round pick.”

https://youtu.be/U5hnv9AYXgs?t=1519

It’s not the first time we’ve seen evaluators cast doubt on Barmore’s pro prospects. Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard spoke with people who worried Barmore would struggle in an organization that lacked structure.

At least the Patriots can bring just that?

Warren Sapp continues to live life like Aquaman

Hall of Fame defensive tackle Warren Sapp was back on the high seas, showing off his back flip form.

Buccaneers Hall of Fame defensive tackle Warren Sapp is one of just three Tampa Bay players to have their jersey retired, with Derrick Brooks and Lee Roy Selmon being the other two. But as great as Sapp was on the field, he’s proving he can dominate in another arena, too, now that he’s retired.

Sapp is a big fisherman, often documenting his catches and expeditions on the high seas on Instagram. He even posted an old video of himself fishing away while his boat was seemingly overtaken with water.

Now, Sapp is back in the sea again, this time showing off his back flip. For a big guy, he’s got some pretty good form.

Take a look.

Shaq Barrett needs 11.5 sacks in 2020 to break this Simeon Rice mark

Bucs LB Shaquil Barrett had a monster season in 2019, and has a chance to break another Bucs record come 2020.

Buccaneer linebacker Shaquil Barrett came out of nowhere last season to lead the league in sacks with 19.5, a huge feat considering he had only 14.0 sacks over the previous four years.

Barrett also broke Warren Sapp’s single-season franchise record for sacks set in 2000 (16.5), but if he really wants to make his mark further in the Bucs’ record books, Barrett will need to get 11.5 sacks this upcoming season to eclipse the two-year sack total set by former defensive end Simeon Rice, who collected 15.5 in 2002 and 15.0 in 2003 for a total of 30.5. (Sapp had only 6.0 sacks the year after setting the franchise mark.)

The good news for Barrett is that both Jason Pierre-Paul and Ndamukong Suh will be back with the Bucs defense this season, meaning teams will have to account for more than just Barrett.

It was a historic year for the former undrafted player in 2019, and Barrett is hoping to prove to himself, and the league, that he’s anything but a one-hit wonder. Breaking Rice’s two-year sack mark would go a long way in cementing his legacy with the Bucs franchise.

Not even a flooding boat can stop Warren Sapp from fishing

Bucs Hall of Famer Warren Sapp proved that not even Mother Nature can stop him.

Warren Sapp was an unstoppable force on the football field during his Hall of Fame career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and apparently, he’s just as unstoppable when it comes to his other great love: fishing

Sapp, who loves to post fishing pictures and videos on his Instagram account, gave his followers a little treat for Throwback Thursday when he posted the below clip, proving he’s unshakable even in the face of Mother Nature.

Take a look.

I don’t know about you, but I’d definitely let the fish win that round and hightail it back to dry land. Then again, I’m not a Hall of Famer like Sapp.
