29 years ago today, Bucs made NFL draft history

The Bucs’ 1995 draft class will always go down as one of the best in NFL history

Only one time in NFL history has a team picked two Hall of Fame defenders in the first round of the same draft.

It was 1995, the team was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

At the No. 12 overall pick, the Bucs landed Miami defensive lineman Warren Sapp. At the 28th overall selection, Tampa Bay stayed in-state once again with Florida State linebacker Derrick Brooks.

Sapp and Brooks became two of the best players in NFL history at their respective positions, and helped change a losing culture in Tampa Bay, a transformation that culminated with the team’s first Super Bowl win back in 2002.

Those two selections continue to live on as one of the best drafts in NFL history, and easily the most important one the Bucs have ever had.

Aaron Donald says Magic Johnson, Warren Sapp were among stars who reached out after he retired

Aaron Donald was flattered by the number of people who reached out after he retired, including LeBron James, Magic Johnson and Warren Sapp

There was an incredible amount of praise and support for Aaron Donald after he announced his retirement from the NFL, from fans to analysts to former and current players. It was overwhelming for Donald, who put together a Hall of Fame career in just 10 seasons in the league.

Donald was blown away by the amount of love he received from everyone after he hung up his cleats, with several big stars reaching out to him and recognizing what a terrific career he had in the NFL.

During an appearance on Chris Long’s “Green Light Podcast” this week, Donald revealed some of the legends who reached out to him.

“A lot of people reached out. I know a lot of people on social media reached out,” Donald said. “There was so much stuff when it came out, like, you want to see everything but it was so overwhelming, it was so much that you couldn’t even see it. So a lot of things that my brother showed me or my wife had to show me as far as, like, LeBron reaching out. Magic Johnson reached out. (Kevin) Durant reached out. A lot of people that are great players and great in their era and did a lot of great things reached out just to congratulate me on my career. It’s pretty special, bro, when you think about how many people reached out. Warren Sapp reached out. A bunch of guys.”

Like Donald, Sapp is one of the best defensive tackles in NFL history so to get some recognition from him must’ve felt pretty special for Donald – even if Sapp did doubt his greatness a few years ago when he called out the Rams star for his run defense.

Donald deserves all of the recognition and praise he’s received throughout his career and it’ll continue to pour in when he eventually gets inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame five years from now.

Bucs Hall of Famer Warren Sapp joins Deion Sanders’ coaching staff at Colorado

Deion Sanders is adding another gold jacket to his coaching staff with the hiring of former Bucs defensive tackle Warren Sapp

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Warren Sapp is teaming up with another member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, this time as a coach at the college level.

Sapp is officially joining the coaching staff at Colorado as a Senior Quality Control Analyst, joining Deion Sanders’ staff in Boulder, per multiple reports.

One of the most dominant defensive linemen in NFL history, Sapp had a prolific tenure in Tampa Bay before finishing his pro career with the Oakland Raiders.

Here’s video evidence of Sapp meeting some his new players as the Buffs prepare for the 2024 college football season:

Warren Sapp officially joins Deion Sanders’ coaching staff amid spring camp

Warren Sapp is officially coaching at CU

It has been teased for several months, but Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Sapp has officially joined the Colorado Buffaloes’ coaching staff.

The all-time great NFL defensive tackle is working with the Buffs as a senior quality control analyst, according to Thee Pregame Show. Colorado head coach Deion Sanders previously confirmed in February that Sapp would be joining his staff.

During the week leading up to Colorado’s season opener against TCU last fall, Sapp attended a practice and shared some wisdom with the Buffs. Soon after, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers legend publically revealed (via Rich Eisen) his intentions of joining CU’s staff.

Sapp played 13 years in the NFL (1995-2007) and earned a Super Bowl ring in 2003 with the Buccaneers.

Earlier this year, USA TODAY Sports reporter Brent Schrotenboer wrote on Sapp’s concerning history, but the hiring does appear to be official.

NFL legend Warren Sapp to join Colorado’s coaching staff in 2024

The Buffs are set to add a big name to their coaching staff in 2024

Deion Sanders is anything but conventional. In fact, Coach Prime is best known for his unique way of going about his business as the head football coach of the Colorado Buffaloes. With that being said, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he has decided to make an interesting addition to his coaching staff in Boulder starting next season.

During his weekly coach’s show, Sanders confirmed that Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive lineman Warren Sapp will join the Buffs’ coaching staff next season.

“I’m excited about coach Sapp,” Sanders said. “He’s a dear friend that I love to life. He’s going to be invaluable to what he brings to the table. The kids are going to love him. As far as the recruits as well, they’re going to love him.”

I don’t think anyone would argue that Sapp will make a positive impact on the staff given his knowledge of the game and the dominance that he played with while in the NFL.

It is unknown what Sapp’s official role will be next season, but it’s probably safe to assume he will have his hands on the defensive line.

Warren Sapp to join Colorado coaching staff next season

The Hall of Fame defensive tackle has not officially been announced by the school, but coach Deion Sanders brought up the hire on Wednesday.

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders won’t be the only Pro Football Hall of Famer on the Buffaloes coaching staff in 2024.

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Warren Sapp will join the Colorado staff next season, Sanders said Wednesday. The move hasn’t been officially announced by the school yet, but the head coach talked about Sapp during his coach’s show.

“I’m excited about Coach Sapp,” Sanders said. “He’s going to be invaluable… the recruits as well, they’re going to love him.”

Sapp has been around the program unofficially in the 2023 season, and Sanders said he’s already made a big impact on the program. He will likely coach the defensive line in some capacity.

Warren Sapp criticizes Devin White on social media for Week 9 play

This isn’t the first time Sapp has had an issue with Devin White’s play.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker [autotag]Devin White[/autotag] has once again found himself under fire from a Bucs defensive legend on social media after his performance against the Houston Texans in Week 9.

Former Tampa Bay defensive tackle and Hall of Famer Warren Sapp broke down a sequence on his Instagram for a segment he calls “SappInTheLab”, and it was one that heavily criticized Devin White. The play features a run from the Texans to the strong side of the field that LB Lavonte David blew up for a loss, but Sapp looked toward where White was on the field — White appears to completely miss Texans wideout Noah Brown coming for a block, and White is unable to get off of it after being blindsided. Check out Sapp’s analysis below:

Sapp criticized White for not paying attention to the block, saying that if he played in an era Sapp did, he would have likely been entirely taken out of the play from a huge hit.

“[Brown] right here would have been Hines Ward, and [White] right here would have been called jacked up,” Sapp said. “That’s the difference in our game, because you get a little kiss. The linebacker don’t see it. What are you doing, son? Good God almighty.”

This isn’t the first time Sapp has had an issue with White. Sapp also broke down Tampa Bay’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday Night Football last year, criticizing his lack of effort and questioning his position as a team captain, saying that he would have “asked for the C off his chest.” At the time, White shrugged off the criticism by saying “People that know football know what was going on.”

White — and the rest of the defense — will look to rebound from the disastrous performance on Sunday when they face off against quarterback Will Levis and the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at 1 p.m. EST.

Warren Sapp hoping to join Deion Sanders’ CU staff in 2024

Warren Sapp revealed his intention to join Coach Prime’s staff in 2024

Deion Sanders walked into Boulder after being hired and transformed the Colorado Buffaloes’ roster and coaching staff.

There are plenty of big names, including former Alabama assistant Charles Kelly and former Kent State head coach Sean Lewis. Mike Zimmer and Willie Taggart were other rumored options, and it’s safe to say Coach Prime had no shortage of interest.

Now, former NFL star and Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Sapp revealed during an episode of “The Rich Eisen Show” that he plans to join Sanders’ staff in Boulder ahead of the 2024 season

Sapp was recently on hand to get a look at Coach Prime and the Buffs and walked away impressed with everything.

“For the first time in my life, I was loved on by some defensive lineman,” Sapp told Eisen. “They wanted to know the keys to the vault. I’ve never had anybody shake my pockets like that and ask for keys to the vault.”

If Sapp does join Colorado’s coaching staff next year, that would be a huge bonus for defensive players thinking of coming to Boulder, as if having Coach Prime wasn’t already a big enough pull.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Sapp was back with the Commanders Tuesday

Sapp was back giving pointers to Washington’s talented defensive line.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Warren Sapp was back in Ashburn Tuesday for the start of the Washington Commanders’ three-day mandatory minicamp.

If you recall, Sapp spent some time with the Commanders at last year’s minicamp and training camp. Sapp has a close relationship with Washington defensive line coach Jeff Zgonina and general manager Martin Mayhew.

While Sapp has reiterated he’s not interested in a full-time coaching career, the 13-year NFL veteran was one of his era’s best defensive players and has much to offer Washington’s deep and talented defensive line.

“They’re big, mobile, agile, hostile,” Sapp said last summer via Zach Selby of commanders.com. “They go at each other; they learn. They do everything that you’re supposed to do.”

One of those “big, mobile, agile, hostile” defensive linemen who took his game to the next level in 2022 was defensive tackle Daron Payne. Payne entered last season in the final year of his contract and earned a four-year, $90 million extension in March after setting career highs across the board.

Defensive ends Montez Sweat and Chase Young enter the final season of their rookie contracts in 2023.

How long will Sapp be around? Don’t be surprised if he’s in town for the remainder of the week and returns for a short stint in training camp. It’s never a bad thing to have someone as successful as Sapp around giving pointers to your young defensive linemen.

27 Days, 27 Picks: DT Warren Sapp

With just three picks left in our 27 Days, 27 Picks series, we go to the 1995 NFL draft — one that saw the Bucs draft two Hall of Famers in the first round. The first of those two would become one of the greatest defensive tackles to ever play the game:

In 27 Days, 27 Picks, Bucs Wire will analyze the last 27 Tampa Bay Buccaneers first-round draft picks, one for each day leading up to the 2023 NFL draft. We’ll take a look at the player’s college stats, their pre-draft numbers (either via the NFL Combine or their Pro Day), their NFL stats, some player footage and analysis at the end on whether the pick itself was a good one.

And now we get to the 1995 NFL draft. With three picks to go, the next two were both drafted in the first round in 1995 — and both became Hall of Famers. The first of those two revolutionized the defensive tackle position and was named defensive player of the year in 1999.
