Former LSU cornerback commit pledges to Florida State

Cai Bates decommitted from the Tigers after taking a visit to Tallahassee last month.

Four-star cornerback [autotag]Cai Bates[/autotag], a one-time LSU commit, completed his flip to Florida State on Friday.

The Edgewater (Orlando) prospect committed to the Tigers back in July following an official visit to Baton Rouge the prior month. He remained locked in through most of the football season, but he announced his decommitment on Nov. 13.

That decision came just two days after Bates took a visit to Tallahassee to see the Seminoles’ game against rival Miami.

A top-10 cornerback in the 2024 class and top-100 prospect nationally, Bates was one of LSU’s highest-rated commits before he eventually exited the class last month.

LSU’s 2024 class currently ranks 13th nationally per On3 and 14th per 247Sports. It features three cornerback commits with [autotag]Ju’Juan Johnson[/autotag], [autotag]Wallace Foster[/autotag] and [autotag]Bernard Causey[/autotag].

4-star LSU cornerback target announces commitment date

One of the best cornerbacks in the 2024 recruiting class has announced his commitment date.

One of the best cornerbacks in the 2024 recruiting class has announced his commitment date. The four-star corner from Waco, Texas, has trimmed his final list of schools down to five, LSU, Texas, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] is working on taking a four-star cornerback in the heart of Texas. [autotag]Kobe Black[/autotag] is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound cornerback who plays for Connally High School. The Connally Cadets finished the 2023 season 8-4 with a loss to Jasper in the second round of the playoffs.

LSU currently has 26 commitments for the 2024 recruiting class with three of those commits being cornerbacks. (four-star [autotag]Ju’Juan Johnson[/autotag], three-star [autotag]Wallace Foster[/autotag] and three-star [autotag]Bernard Causey[/autotag]). Johnson recently broke the Louisiana state record for yards of total offense in a career last Friday.

Black currently has received multiple crystal balls to Texas and the Longhorns are a 95% favorite to land him per On3.

BREAKING: Four-star cornerback Cai Bates decommits from LSU

The Tigers lost a key piece in the 2024 class on Monday night.

After some nice recent wins on the recruiting trail, LSU suffered a pretty substantive loss on Monday night as four-star Edgewater (Orlando) cornerback [autotag]Cai Bates[/autotag] decommitted.

Bates ranks within the top 100 nationally, per the 247Sports Composite, and he was the second-highest-rated committed player in LSU’s 2024 class prior to his decommitment. Bates committed to LSU on June 26 following an official visit days earlier.

With Bates’ departure from the class, LSU’s group of 2024 commits now ranks 14th nationally per 247Sports and 12th nationally per On3. Between Bates and [autotag]Ondre Evans[/autotag], LSU has lost both of their top 160 cornerback commits in the 2024 recruiting cycle.

LSU still has a trio of cornerback commits in four-star [autotag]Ju’Juan Johnson[/autotag] and three-stars [autotag]Wallace Foster[/autotag] and [autotag]Bernard Causey[/autotag]. There is no clear favorite to land Bates now, though Florida State, Alabama, Tennessee and others remain in the mix.

Where does LSU’s 2024 recruiting class rank after recent shakeups?

Here’s where LSU’s class ranks after some recent shakeups.

LSU’s 2024 class looks different than it did last week.

It took a hit when cornerback [autotag]Ondre Evans[/autotag] flipped to Georgia. It’s a big loss considering Evans was just one of eight top 200 commits in the class and plays a position of need.

The staff did its best to recoup the loss, though. In recent days, the Tigers got commitments from corners [autotag]PJ Woodland[/autotag] and [autotag]Bernard Causey[/autotag]. Both are three stars, but there’s optimism about what they can bring to the class.

The Tigers now sit with five corners in the 2024 class. Causey and Woodland are joined by [autotag]Ju’Juan Johnson[/autotag], [autotag]Cai Bates[/autotag] and [autotag]Wallace Foster[/autotag].

Even with the new additions and the young talent already on the roster, expect LSU to be active recruiting defensive backs in the portal.

But after the recent shakeups, let’s take a look at where LSU’s class stands now.

On3: 11th

247Sports: 12th

The loss of Evans knocked LSU’s class out of the top 10, but the Tigers are in pursuit of top 100 wide receiver [autotag]Dre’lon Miller[/autotag], who decommitted from Texas A&M after a visit to Baton Rouge.

A commitment from Miller would put LSU back in the top 10.

BREAKING: LSU lands 3-star 2024 cornerback commit

The Tigers have suffered some recent losses on the trail, but they beat out a pair of division foes for this Hattiesburg, Mississippi, prospect.

After taking a couple of recent losses in the 2024 recruiting class, including a four-star cornerback in Ondre Evans, the Tigers got their class back up to 24 commits with the addition of [autotag]PJ Woodland[/autotag] on Sunday night.

The three-star Oak Grove (Hattiesburg, Miss.) cornerback committed to LSU over in-state SEC West foes Ole Miss and Mississippi State. He had received Crystal Ball projections in favor of both schools, including a prediction for the Rebels as recently as last weekend.

But LSU received a pair of Crystal Balls on Sunday, and it was the heavy favorite according to On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine.

Woodland ranks as the No. 526 player nationally and No. 17 overall prospect in the state of Mississippi, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. He’s one of X cornerback commits in the 2024 class, which also features [autotag]Cai Bates[/autotag], [autotag]Ju’Juan Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Wallace Foster[/autotag].

LSU’s 24-man 2024 class currently ranks 12th nationally.

Elite Louisiana cornerback Wardell Mack commits to Florida

LSU lost out on one of the top players in the state of Louisiana.

LSU lost out on one of the top players in the state of Louisiana in the 2024 cycle on Friday as four-star Marrero (La.) John Ehret cornerback [autotag]Wardell Mack[/autotag] committed to coach Billy Napier and the Florida Gators.

Mack ranks as the No. 72 player nationally and No. 2 player in the state of Louisiana, according to On3. It’s a tough loss, but it’s softened by the fact that the Tigers already have a top-100 cornerback on board in [autotag]Cai Bates[/autotag].

Still, it’s a bit disappointing that the Tigers have struggled to land the top players in the state in this cycle. LSU boasts commitments from eight of the top-10 players in Louisiana, but with Mack committing to Florida and No. 1 prospect [autotag]Dominick McKinley[/autotag] trending toward Texas, it seems like LSU is poised to miss on the two best prospects in the state.

In addition to Bates, LSU has commitments from cornerbacks [autotag]Ondre Evans[/autotag], [autotag]Ju’Juan Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Wallace Foster[/autotag] in the 2024 cycle.

5-star cornerback announces his final five schools

The No. 2 cornerback in the 2024 recruiting class has trimmed his list of possible destinations down to five.

The No. 2 cornerback in the 2024 recruiting class has trimmed his list of possible destinations down to his final five schools. [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] has LSU in the running to land him.

[autotag]Kobe Black[/autotag] is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound, four-star cornerback from Waco, Texas, where he plays for Connally High School. The Connally Cadets finished the 2022 season 9-3 with a loss to Hamshire-Fannett in the second round of the UIL 4A D2 playoffs.

Black has trimmed his list of schools down to LSU, Oregon, Ohio State, Texas A&M and Texas. The Texas Longhorns received a Crystal Ball projection to land him back in June and the Longhorns are a 92% favorite to land him per On3.

LSU currently has four cornerback commits for the 2024 recruiting class ([autotag]Cai Bates[/autotag], [autotag]Ju’Juan Johnson[/autotag], [autotag]Ondre Evans[/autotag] and [autotag]Wallace Foster[/autotag]). Two of those guys are four-stars and the other two are three-stars. Black is a five-star and the No. 2 cornerback overall so if he were to commit he would further bolster how good this class is.

LSU lands commitment from 2024 4-star cornerback

Brian Kelly’s 2024 recruiting class got even better as the Tigers landed a four-star cornerback who is a top-100 player in the country.

Brian Kelly’s 2024 recruiting class got even better as the Tigers landed a four-star cornerback who is a top-100 player in the country.

[autotag]Cai Bates[/autotag] is a 6-foot-2, 180-pound, four-star cornerback from Orlando where he plays for Edgewater High School. Bates was down to seven schools: Alabama, LSU, Florida State, Colorado, Tennessee, Ohio State and Texas A&M.

He chose the Tigers over everyone else. Why? Because in his opinion, LSU is DBU (Defensive Back University).

With his commitment, Bates becomes the 20th recruit of the 2024 class and the fourth cornerback in the class ([autotag]Wallace Foster[/autotag], [autotag]Ondre Evans[/autotag] and [autotag]Ju’Juan Johnson[/autotag]) This commitment has not moved the class into the top 10 yet but there are more opportunities for Kelly to land more talented recruits.

No matter how you look at it, this is a big get for LSU. Bates has the talent to help LSU on day one of the 2024 season.

4-star 2024 cornerback, LSU target announces commitment date

One of the best cornerbacks in the country for the class of 2024 has announced his commitment date, and it is coming soon.

One of the best cornerbacks in the country for the class of 2024 has announced his commitment date, and it is coming soon.

[autotag]Cai Bates[/autotag] is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound, four-star cornerback from Orlando where he plays for Edgewater High School. The Edgewater Eagles finished the 2022 season 12-1 with a loss to Jones in the third round of the 3M state playoffs.

Bates recently trimmed his final list of schools down to seven schools. LSU made the list along with Alabama, Florida State, Colorado, Tennessee, Ohio State and Texas A&M. There are no Crystal Ball projections available at this time for Bates but LSU is a 24% favorite to land him per On3.

If Bates commits to LSU, he would be the highest-ranked cornerback in its 2024 recruiting class. The Tigers currently has two cornerback commits, but one ([autotag]Ondre Evans[/autotag]) ranks outside the top 150 while the other ([autotag]Wallace Foster[/autotag]) is a three-star.

As soon as Bates announces his commitment we will have coverage of it right here on LSU Wire.

4-star LSU cornerback target commits to Auburn

Jalyn Crawford picked Auburn over LSU and Florida.

LSU lost out on the sweepstakes for four-star Lilburn (Ga.) Parkview cornerback [autotag]Jalyn Crawford[/autotag] on Saturday. The four-star picked Auburn over LSU and Florida.

The decision was far from a surprise. AU had long been seen as the favorite here, and the Tigers picked up a spate of Crystal Ball projections from 247Sports in recent days leading up to his commitment.

Crawford is ranked as the No. 159 overall player in the 2024 class on the 247Sports Composite, and he’s the No. 23 prospect in the state of Georgia. LSU still has just three top-200 commits, though the Tigers do have a pair of cornerbacks on board in [autotag]Ondre Evans[/autotag] and [autotag]Wallace Foster[/autotag].

LSU’s 18-man 2024 recruiting class currently ranks 13th nationally, according to 247Sports.
