Top 15 recruiting classes as early signing day approaches

Where LSU ranks in recruiting just two weeks from the early signing period.

The clock is ticking on the 2022 recruiting class for the LSU Tigers. Now that a head coach is in place, he must re-recruit the guys already committed to the class. Brian Kelly will also be tasked with filling out his staff on top of closing out a few recruiting deals.

The two biggest names of the class are Will Campbell and Walker Howard, following the announcement of Kelly being hired, they seemed locked in. Howard was more vocal about it than their five-star offensive tackle pledge.

Class Breakdown

  • Quarterbacks: 1
  • Wide Receivers: 1
  • Tight Ends: 2
  • Offensive Line: 3
  • Defensive Line: 2
  • Linebacker: 1
  • Defensive Backs: 2
  • Special Teams: 1

The team has no running back commit at this moment but they were among the top three listed for Trevor Etienne recently. It remains to be seen if the hiring of Kelly would impact Etienne’s decision. He is also looking at Clemson, where his brother became a household name and Florida.

The commitments of both tight ends in Jake Johnson and Mason Taylor could be greatly impacted by who the offensive coordinator will be. With just two weeks until the early signing period, we look at the top 15 classes according to 247Sports team composite rankings.

Walker Howard on Brian Kelly: ‘He’s going to bring us to national championships’

Sure sounds like five-star quarterback commit Walker Howard isn’t going anywhere.

One of the biggest questions outside of who Scott Woodward would eventually hire had to do with legacy quarterback Walker Howard. The five-star quarterback had taken visits to Notre Dame and Ole Miss in recent weeks. With the uncertainty surrounding the coaching carousel, who could really blame him.

Upon hearing the news of Brian Kelly’s hire at LSU, Howard was elated with the news. The coach that he met with in South Bend is coming to the school that coached his father, Jamie. The younger Howard believes that there will be championships coming to the Bayou.

“He’s going to bring us to national championships,” five-star quarterback commit Walker Howard told The Daily Advertiser. “I can tell you that for sure.”

It was the perfect storm for the nation’s No. 4 ranked quarterback in the 2022 class. He is also No. 31 overall according to 247Sports composite rankings. Howard stated that Kelly was the kind of coach that the elder Howard wanted for his son.

“The kind of guy he was, that’s the kind of person my dad wanted me to be around,” Howard said. “Coach Kelly, he’s the best in the country, he’s the most winning coach (in Notre Dame history).”

With Howard seemingly staying at LSU, that bodes well for the 2022 class. There is time remaining for them to finish with a top 10 class in theory. Having a five-star quarterback committed will help the other positions and something to watch in the coming weeks.

Bold Predictions: LSU in the postseason, head coach, and quarterback talk

We’re getting bold with these predictions. Bowl games, head coaches, and quarterbacks oh my.

Two games left on the schedule and both come at home. The LSU Tigers need to win out to have a chance at the postseason, but will they get there? The LSU Tigers Wire staff will answer that question momentarily.

There is also the hottest topic around the nation, it seems like everyone wants to know where the Bayou Bengals and athletic director Scott Woodward go with the next head coach. Current head coaches around the nation are having to answer questions that tie them to the purple and gold.

But what about the quarterbacks? We have seen a lot of Max Johnson and a little of Garrett Nussmeier this season. Who gets the nod heading into the 2022 season?

The staff gets bold with these predictions as the offseason approaches.

Quarterback discussion: A look at the future of the position at LSU

Trying to figure out the QB situation in 2022.

Coming out of spring ball we thought there would be a four-man battle going for the quarterback position. At the time they had Myles Brennan back and healthy following his season-ending injury in 2020. The team also had a pair of sophomore passers in TJ Finley and Max Johnson as well as incoming freshman Garrett Nussmeier.

That changed on May 6, 2021, when Finley decided to enter the transfer portal. Not three weeks later Finley was on his way to back up Bo Nix at Auburn. That left Brennan, Johnson, and Nussmeier as the trio of scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.

Prior to the start of camp, Myles Brennan suffered an injury that would require surgery leaving just two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster until his return. That return never came. The Monday following when Brennan was expected to return, he put his name in the transfer portal.

That leaves just Johnson and Nuss on the team at quarterback, let’s dive into what the team could look like moving forward at the position?

Recruiting: A pair of LSU commits on flip watch

Two highly-touted 2022 commits could be looking elsewhere.

This is the time of year where you start to hear rumblings of potential flips across the recruiting landscape. Just six weeks away from the early signing period, plenty of teams are making a run at players committed elsewhere. Two top recruits that have pledged to LSU are the targets of several teams according to 247Sports.

We start with the Elite 11 quarterback, Walker Howard.

Walker Howard, Five-Star Quarterback

This seems fairly obvious given the recent visit to Notre Dame for the USC game this past weekend. With the uncertainty surrounding the LSU head coaching search, will Howard fit whatever offense they bring to Baton Rouge with this hire? Howard is a legacy recruit with his father being a former quarterback for the program. However, we have seen legacy players go elsewhere before, just ask Texas about the Brockermeyer boys.

What 247Sports Says…

Ed Orgeron’s exit might seem like the main reason why longtime LSU quarterback commit Walker Howard is looking around, but Notre Dame has actually been courting the five-star signal caller for months now. Howard will likely give the Tigers’ next head coach a chance to recruit him, but the Irish aren’t going to make it easy for LSU to hang onto the Elite 11 finalist, especially after hosting Howard for an unofficial visit this past weekend for the USC game.

Latterance Welch, Four-Star Cornerback

One of the main reasons why this name comes as no surprise is what happens to Corey Raymond? He has helped bring some top talent to the Bayou and serves as the defensive backs coach.

What 247Sports Says…

Laterrance Welch is another LSU commit that is communicating with other programs. He was set to take an official visit to Florida State back in September, but he ended up having to cancel the trip at the last minute after injuring himself in a game the night before his scheduled departure. It sounds like the Seminoles will still get Welch on campus at some point before the Early Signing Period as he has built a strong bond with Marcus Woodson and others in Tallahassee.

Notre Dame to host five star quarterback, LSU commit for USC game

Could the Irish pull this one off?

Notre Dame was supposed to host five-star quarterback Walker Howard when Cincinnati made a trip to South Bend earlier this month, but an injury the night before to Howard kept him from making the trip.  Now the Lafayette, Louisiana native is set to make the trip north for an official visit which will now occur as the program he’s currently committed to, LSU, looks for their next head coach.

According to a report from Tom Loy of 247Sports:

This is a name Irish Illustrated had been tracking for months when we were told that he had a strong relationship with offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Tommy Rees, and it looks like that connection is paying off to at least give the Irish a shot at the 6-1, 195-pounder this weekend.

As we said back when Howard was originally set to visit Notre Dame, this is a swing you absolutely take even if you’ve already gotten a commitment from Steve Angeli.  Quarterback has been a spot where Notre Dame has been limited compared to some of the nation’s elites and Howard was seemingly help close that gap.

And now with a coaching change happening at LSU the possibility of him not actually attending school there feels at least somewhat possible.

LSU commit Walker Howard left Friday’s game with a leg injury

LSU QB commit left Friday’s game with an injury.

On Friday night 2022 LSU Tigers commit Walker Howard left the game with a left leg injury.

Nearing the halfway point of the third quarter, Howard (6-foot-1, 195 pounds) was running to the near sideline at Ruston’s 15-yard line before getting tackled out of bounds at around the 5-yard line, which was when the injury occurred.

St. Thomas More lost the game 52-27 to Ruston. Now the question becomes how serious the injury is for the future Tigers quarterback. Howard was set to visit Notre Dame on Saturday.

Howard is the No. 1 rated quarterback in the country for the 2022 class according to 247Sports composite rankings.

Notre Dame making a play for LSU commit Walker Howard

It looks like Walker Howard might be taking a look at the Golden Domers.

It appears that Walker Howard is on the radar for a historic program in college football. Why shouldn’t he? The five-star gunslinger was among the quarterbacks competing in the Elite 11.

Howard pledged to play for the Tigers back on Jun. 20, 2020. Currently, 247Sports composite rankings have the St. Thomas More quarterback as the No. 1 player in the state of Louisiana and the No. 1 passer.

Nick Shepkowski of Fighting Irish Wire notes that Notre Dame should make a play for the five-star talent from Louisiana.

Notre Dame has a 2022 recruiting class quarterback commitment already from Steve Angeli of Bergen Catholic in New Jersey but if you’ve got the slightest chance to add an elite quarterback prospect like Howard you’d be a fool not to at least explore it.

The Rivals Notre Dame site mentioned that LSU is aware of his visit to South Bend.

Howard is considered very strong in his commitment to the Tigers, but because he has not visited another school for a game day experience, the family wanted to see Notre Dame.

We are told that LSU is aware of this visit and that there are no issues on that end, but Howard seeing the Fighting Irish at least opens the door should something change in his recruitment.

LSU currently sits at No. 8 in the 247Sports team composite recruiting rankings for the 2022 class. They lost one five-star commit in Jacoby Mathews and now Howard could potentially be next to re-evaluate his commitment. Recently Will Campbell stated that he is 100% locked in with the Tigers. Howard is a second-generation quarterback to pledge to play for LSU.

Will family history keep him committed to the Tigers and Ed Orgeron?

So you’re saying there’s a chance? Irish to host top current 2022 @lsutigerswire commitment.

For what will likely end up being the biggest home game of the 2021 season Notre Dame will be hosting several big-time recruits as the Irish take on Cincinnati this Saturday.  Now among them will be five-star quarterback Walker Howard who is currently committed to LSU.

Mike Singer of BlueandGold.com reports:
