Vontae Davis may have slipped after sauna, according to brother Vernon

Vontae Davis was founded unresponsive in his home gym and was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Former Miami Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis may have died after he collapsed or slipped after stepping out of a sauna, his brother Vernon Davis told the DailyMail.com on Wednesday.

While investigations into Davis’ death are ongoing and could take weeks before determining a cause of death, police say no foul play was believed to be involved.

In audio from a 911 call released by police on Tuesday, an unidentified woman said she found Davis unresponsive on the floor of a home gym. Davie Police Department officers who responded to the call pronounced Davis dead at the scene.

“I’m leaning on the detectives to figure it out but right now we have no answers,” Vernon Davis, a former NFL tight end, told DailyMail.com. “They are going to run tests and they said they’ll get back to us. It could be as long as a month, a month and a half, until we know anything.”

Vontae Davis was selected by the Dolphins in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft and spent three seasons with the team before he was traded to the Colts in 2012.

Davis shared his reasoning for the abrupt retirement decision after the game: “This isn’t how I pictured retiring from the NFL. But today, on the field, reality hit me hard and fast. I shouldn’t be out there anymore. … I meant no disrespect to my teammates or coaches.”

Brandon Beane on Vontae Davis retirement: ‘I can say I’ve seen it all’

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane on Vontae Davis retirement.

Vontae Davis is the story that just seems to find a way to keep on giving.

Plenty of time has passed since that 2018 September day in Orchard Park. The Bills got blown out by the Chargers that Sunday, but Davis retiring at halftime will be the story from that game that lives in Bills lore.

Upon it happening, the team said little. While sometimes one can be tough on the club about not saying much, what else do you expect them to do? But now years removed, we’re starting to hear a few stories about it.

Back in April, cornerback Tre’Davious White and former running back LeSean McCoy joked about it on social media.

“Coach was like, ‘Get ready,’ and Vontae was like, ‘Nah, I’m done,'” White joked about being on the sideline with him, explaining he thought Davis meant after the season, not right there and then.

But now along with White and Shady, Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane joined the Pat McAfee Show and gave some candid insight into his perspective into what happened. It’s certainly a day he won’t forget.

“Something I’ve never seen, and you know Vontae… I can say I’ve seen a lot of things… that’s when I said I’ve seen it all,” Beane said. “I’ve seen a kid in little league walk off the field, he’s ticked off, his mom or dad is not happy, ‘Get in the car johnny, we’re going home.’ But I’ve never seen it from an NFL perspective.”

The GM explained that he got a message from the locker room. But as text messages often go, whether it’s about making plans with a friend, or going through a break up, sometimes you just don’t fully understand the depth of a text message as opposed to actually speaking. That was the case for Beane in this circumstance at halftime.

“I got a text and I didn’t understand it, to be honest with you. I got a text from the locker room, basically saying, ‘Hey, Vontae’s done,’ and I’m like, ‘Done?’ And they’re like, ‘Yeah, says he’s not going to play anymore,'” Beane said. “I thought in my head he’s pulling himself out. Something’s hurting, a groin thing or something, or he and a coach got into it.

“Never in my mind, he’s like… done with the NFL, all that stuff.”

Even eventually in-person following the game… plenty of confusion was still going on for the Bills front office.

“After the game, talking to Sean (McDermott), he still doesn’t really know everything,” Beane said. “You’re asking questions and like… no, he literally got dressed, in the locker room at halftime, packed his stuff, and drove out.”

As game day ended, Beane said the following day he contacted Davis’s agent to see if there was something “underlying” and perhaps there was a chance that Davis was going to come back in and work things out.

“He was like, ‘No, I’m happy, I’m good, I’ll pay my bonus back.’ Because that was my next thing, like how are we going to do this? And they were like, ‘Nope, he’s going to pay his money back. And I’ve got to give him a lot of credit. Some people may have argued. Vontae immediately paid everything back. Although I was very disappointed to see a guy do that at halftime, I’ve got to give him credit.

“Within two weeks, he paid his bonus back. I thought that was pretty impressive,” Beane said.

Like you and me, the Vontae Davis story in western New York is something the Bills general manager won’t soon forget, much like all of Bills Mafia. What a crazy day for us all. Good thing the grass has been green since then.

Bills teammates share hilarious details of Vontae Davis’ halftime retirement

You have GOT to hear this

Vontae Davis retiring from the NFL while literally in the middle of playing an NFL game will always and forever be a moment.

You remember exactly where you were and how hard you laughed when news broke that the former Bills cornerback had decided to retire in the middle of the game. It was truly that funny.

But here’s the thing: We know he retired, but we really don’t know all the details about how it went down. We’ve heard bits and pieces, but not the full story.

Not until today, that is. Davis’ former teammates LeSean McCoy and Tre’Davious White gave us the scoop on how Davis dipped out at halftime and it’s just as funny as you think it is.

(NSFW language included)

White telling the story is going to have you on the ground trying to catch your breath after laughing so much

“He had just made a big stop on third down. He put his fist up and got the crowd pumped up and everything.   So we got to the sideline.

You know what I mean, the offense going, so we about to punt. Coach was like, ‘Y’all get ready,’ and he was like ‘Yeah, I’m done young bull.’

I looked, I was like ‘hold on.’ He was like ‘Yeah, this my last go round.’ I was like, what you mean, oh, this gonna be your last year?’ He was like ‘Nah, this gonna be my last game. I’m done, man,’.”

This is story is so good, man. So good. Shoutout to Vontae Davis for giving us this great laugh all these years later.

WATCH: Tre’Davious White, LeSean McCoy roast Vontae Davis’ retirement

Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White had one such interesting conversation with his former Buffalo teammate LeSean McCoy.

NFL players like the rest of us are pretty bored now a days. But we all know quarantining is for the best with the ongoing coronavius pandemic.

Plenty of folks are going on social media to kill time and Instagram live conversations have gotten interesting. Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White had one such interesting conversation with his former Buffalo teammate LeSean McCoy.

The defender and running back were joking about a time that lives in Bills lore, when fellow cornerback Vontae Davis retired at halftime of the team’s home opener against the Chargers in 2018.

Here’s a clip of the two going back and forth about it:

That moment will forever live in Bills and football history as one of the strangest things to ever happen in the NFL. Davis left and never came back to football. It was a wildly debated topic at the time, but it at least seems as if White and former teammates of Davis have made amends.

The video between White and McCoy took place on Thursday. On Friday, White went to Twitter to say he and Davis had a conversation about it. Based on what White said, it appears the two are on good terms.

Regardless, Tre’s breakdown of the moment is still hilarious.
