Why Miami Will Win

The Hurricanes can fix this.

It’s been a rough three game losing streak, but the offense threw well against North Carolina – okay, so that’s hardly difficult to do – and the ground game worked against Texas A&M.

The pass rush is great, the special teams are solid, and the team is good at controlling the time of possession battle.

So what’s the problem? Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers.

The Hurricanes aren’t able to overcome adversity in any way over the last three games. Penalties aren’t an issue, but the seven giveaways have been a killer.

That’s where Virginia Tech’s defense comes in – it doesn’t take the ball away. It forced two fumbles in the loss to Old Dominion in the opener, and it came up with just three takeaways over the next five games.

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The Hokies can fix this.

It’s been a rough three game losing streak, but the turnovers have slowed since the disastrous opener against ODU and the defense is the best in the ACC at coming up with third down stops.

So what’s the problem? The little things – like scoring.

Penalties were a killer against West Virginia, the inability to take the ball away has been a huge problem and – for this program – the special teams haven’t been good enough.

More than anything else the offense is having a hard time converting drives into points. Miami’s secondary can be thrown on, it’s not picking off passes, and in this it’s up to Grant Wells to come up with a brilliant performance at home to pull this off.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s like these two teams don’t know how to put the puzzle together.

The two new head coaches are going to need a little while. Brent Pry’s Hokies don’t have any one thing they can do well, but it feels like one big win might be able to flip a switch.

It’s not happening this week.

Mario Cristobal’s Hurricanes are way overdue to come up with something big.

The defense will keep the Hokies from running, Wells won’t be able to do enough to keep the attack moving late, and the slide will stop.

If Georgia Tech could come up with a win over Pitt …

It’s been a rough ride for Virginia Tech with the offense sputtering and the defense not making up for the problems with takeaways. The parts are there to be better – Grant Wells is a decent quarterback, and there’s a good rotation of runners – but it’s just not clicking.

So what’s going right?

The defense is good enough to keep things interesting and close.

It’s great on third downs and can hold up against the run, but it needs help from the other side. Start with this: the pass protection is there. You can’t hang with Pitt if you can’t slow down that pass rush, and Virginia Tech can do that.

The Virginia Tech offense really, really isn’t working.

The passing game isn’t efficient, the running game is averaging just 109 yards per outing, and scoring points has been like pulling teeth averaging just 18 per game.

Okay, but Georgia Tech is having problems, too, and it was able to get past Pitt 26-21 last week. How?

Turnovers. Pitt was okay on giveaways all year, and then it turned it over three times to the Yellow Jackets. Virginia Tech’s defense is doing a slew of nice things, but it’s not coming up with takeaways generating just four on the year.

The offense was okay against Georgia Tech, but the turnovers were too much to overcome. The O will stay balanced, and the defensive side will keep the struggling Hokies to under 300 yards.

Virginia Tech has to take advantage of every opportunity and has to take a few chances. It hasn’t been able to do either on a regular basis so far.

5 Takeaways from Tar Heels win over Virginia Tech

We take a look at five takeaways from the UNC football programs win over Virginia Tech in Week 5 in Chapel Hill.

The 4-1 North Carolina Tar Heels handled business Saturday afternoon, beating 2-3 Virginia Tech 41-10.

UNC played the best they have all season, with both sides of the ball getting the job done. The offense stayed hot, led by quarterback Drake Maye who produced a five total touchdown day.

North Carolina’s defense also changed their season tune, mixing up schemes and causing havoc for the Hokies’ offense. This game was needed for UNC’s confidence after coming off their first season loss in the 45-32 defeat against Notre Dame.

Now, 1-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, UNC’s schedule only gets more challenging as they prepare to finish their schedule against Miami, Duke, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Wake, Georgia Tech, and NC State.

Before we look at what stands in the way of an ACC championship bid, we break down the five key takeaways from the win this weekend.

North Carolina’s defense steps up in a blowout win against Virginia Tech

The North Carolina Tar Heels’ defense steps up in a statement win over Virginia Tech, moving to 4-1 on the season.

The North Carolina Tar Heels are now 3-1 following a big 41-10 win over Virginia Tech on Saturday, opening up Atlantic Coast Conference play with a big win.

And a big reason why was because of the Tar Heels’ defense.

North Carolina started the game sluggish, punting on their first drive and watching the Hokies kick a field goal right after.  However, after that, UNC saw a fire ignite on both sides of the ball.

The Drake Maye-led offense drove down the field for 75 yards leading to a passing touchdown to tight end Kamari Morales.

The next Tech possession went for 19-yards before UNC forced them to punt.

North Carolina then drove down the field again for 85 yards leading to a Maye rushing touchdown. Pressure has been echoing for Gene Chizik’s defense to step up all year, and they did just that the next drive, with Cedric Gray giving Hokies quarterback Grant Wells his sixth interception of the season.

UNC’s offense rewarded the defense by Maye tossing a 16-yard touchdown to Antoine Green two seconds later. After both teams punted, North Carolina’s defense gave up their first touchdown of the game late, with Wells having a rushing touchdown of his own. With just 28 seconds left to play, Maye led the UNC to field goal range for a quick field goal right in the middle of the upright.

UNC went into the half up 24-10.

The second half was all UNC as they forced Virginia Tech to a punt on their opening drive of the third quarter. North Carolina answered the Hokies’ punt with Maye’s second rushing touchdown stemming from a 94-yard, four-minute drive.

UNC forced the Hokies to punt, resulting in North Carolina putting another field goal on the ensuing drive. The defense stayed stout, making Virginia Tech punt for the fifth time of the day with UNC answering back with Maye tossing his third passing touchdown of the game, this time to Bryson Nesbit.

After that, North Carolina continued to pour it on Virginia Tech, getting to the point where backups came in, and we got a glimpse of backup quarterback Jacolby Criswell. The defense dominated all game, shutting out Virginia’s offense in the second half.

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

So what’s going right with the Hokies?

It’s going to be a process before things start to come together under new head coach Brent Pry, but the defense hasn’t been bad.

West Virginia was balanced and moved with ease in the 33-10 win last week, but overall the Hokie D has been great on third downs, the secondary has been solid, and the 218 rushing yards by the Mountaineers was the first time this year anyone has been able to move on the ground.

On the flip side, the North Carolina run defense has been abysmal. Everyone is getting fat running on the Tar Heels with Appalachian State, Georgia State, and Notre Dame combining for close to 800 rushing yards with six scores.

Virginia Tech hasn’t been able to run well so far, but it has to try.

Why North Carolina Will Win

Yeah, Virginia Tech’s defense has technically been okay so far, but playing Old Dominion, Boston College, and Wofford had something to do with that.

The North Carolina defense might not know the season has started, but the offensive side is rolling with ease, it’s averaging 47 points per game, and it’s averaging over 500 yards per game.

Get up fast, make Virginia Tech have to crank up the passing game, and all should be fine. Hokie QB Grant Wells might put up some yards, but the offense isn’t converting off the decent drives.

What’s Going To Happen

Can North Carolina finally have an easy game against an FBS team?

It’s the team’s own fault for not being able to do enough defensively, but Virginia Tech doesn’t have the pop to do much once the scoring starts rolling.

The Tar Heels will rely mostly on the ground game to start, and then Drake Maye and the passing attack will take over as the Hokie D gets picked apart.

The defensive keys to the game for the UNC football program against Virginia Tech this weekend.

The UNC football program looks to bounce back from its first loss of the season when welcoming in Virginia Tech to Chapel Hill.

It will be the ACC opener for the Tar Heels, who currently sit at 3-1 on the season.

As good as the offense has been this season, the defense seems to get all the coverage due to its very poor play each and every game.

So far, the UNC defense has given up over 30 points in four games and over 50 points twice. The Tar Heels look to change that narrative this weekend going up against a subpar Hokies offense.

We take a look at some photos from the last time UNC and Virginia Tech met in Hurricane weather back in 2016 in Chapel Hill.

The UNC football program is set to host Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill as the Tar Heels’ Atlantic Coast Conference schedule kicks off for the 2022 campaign.

UNC is coming off a tough home loss to Notre Dame while the Hokies dropped their Week 4 game to West Virginia.

Saturday’s game could be a sloppy one as heavy rain is in the forecast due to Hurricane Ian but it won’t be the first time these two teams have played in Hurricane related weather.

In 2016, the two teams met in Chapel Hill for a ranked matchup as UNC was looking to get back to the ACC title game. Virginia Tech had other plans and flat-out dominated the game from the start as they beat UNC 34-3 in the pouring rain from Hurricane Matthew. Here are some photos from that game as we get set for Week 5.

Let’s hope Saturday’s matchup doesn’t go that way and UNC can come out victorious and get on track.

Dax Hollifield on UNC: ‘I’m not a big fan of them’

Virginia Tech’s Dax Hollifield isn’t a fan of the UNC football program judging by his recruitment and his latest comments.

Virginia Tech linebacker Dax Hollifield may have just added some fuel to the fire ahead of the Hokies matchup at North Carolina on Saturday afternoon.

The former Shelby High School was a prospect that was heavily recruited by both UNC and Virginia Tech. Hollifield ended up picking the Hokies over the Tar Heels, and opted to not stay in-state. But as we go into Saturday’s matchup between the two teams, Hollifield reflected on a recruiting visit to UNC back in 2016 when the two teams met in a hurricane with the Hokies coming out on top.

And Hollifield didn’t hold back on the feelings between himself and UNC to the Richmond Times Dispatch:

“It means a lot to me,” said Hollifield, a Shelby, North Carolina native who chose to play for the Hokies over his home-state Tar Heels, among others. “They don’t like me. I’m not a big fan of them. I can’t wait to go down there to Kenan and get booed the first time I make a tackle. It’s really going to make my day.”

Hollifield is right. UNC fans are sour to him and he’s sour right back to the fan base after his recruiting decision. At least he acknowledges it.

But what would make this sweeter would be a big UNC win on Saturday in Hollifield’s final game against the Tar Heels in his college career.

North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Virginia Tech kickoff time announced

The North Carolina football program announced the kickoff time for Saturday’s game against Virginia Tech.

The North Carolina Tar Heels will look to rebound after the loss to Notre Dame on Saturday, suffering their first loss of the year. And following that game, they stay home to open up the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule by hosting Virginia Tech.

The two teams will face off at 3:30 p.m. EST, the program announced this week with the game airing on the ACC Network.

The Hokies have played just one ACC game so far this season, beating Boston College 27-10 a few weeks back. But the Hokies have struggled this season.

They lost to Old Dominion to open up the season before rallying off two-straight wins. However, like UNC, the Hokies are looking to rebound off a loss, dropping Week 4 to West Virginia 33-10.

Last season Virginia Tech defeated North Carolina 17-10 in Week 1, derailing their preseason hype. This game can right the wrong from last season and serve as the perfect turnaround game for UNC.

Breaking down every interception by Hendon Hooker at Virginia Tech and Tennessee.

No. 12 Tennessee (4-0, 1-0 SEC) hosted No. 22 Florida (2-2, 0-2 SEC) Saturday at Neyland Stadium in Week 4.

The Vols defeated Florida, 38-33, in Week 4.

Tennessee has an open date in Week 5 before playing at LSU Oct. 8.

Tennessee redshirt senior quarterback Hendon Hooker has completed 81-of-113 passing attempts for 1,193 yards, eight touchdowns and zero interceptions in 2022.

Hooker completed 206-of-302 passing attempts for 2,945 yards, 31 touchdowns and three interceptions for the Vols in 2021.

The 6-foot-4, 218-pound Hooker transferred to Tennessee from Virginia Tech on Jan. 7, 2021.

He totaled 2,894 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and seven interceptions from 2017-20 with the Hokies.
