If the Steelers draft a running back, don’t expect him to be in Pittsburgh for long

The Steelers traditionally don’t keep backs around for long.

After months of speculating by draft experts and fans alike, we’re just a few days away from the 2021 NFL draft and finally knowing what the Pittsburgh Steelers do with the No. 24 pick.

Many believe their first selection will be a running back — a position the Steelers have been weak at since Le’Veon Bell left.

If the pick is a running back, don’t expect him to be in Pittsburgh for very long. It’s been more than a decade since the Steelers signed a back to a multi-year contract. According to NFL Network’s Aditi Kinkhabwala, it was Verron Haynes.

Mainly a third-down back, Haynes was signed by the Steelers in the 5th round of the 2002 NFL draft. He was used sparingly in his first two seasons but rushed for 272 and 274 yards in 2004 and 2005. He missed most of the 2006 season with a knee injury and was released in 2007 as a cap-saving measure.

The Steelers re-signed Haynes after Willie Parker broke his leg later that season, but he only appeared in one game.

By the time Haynes left Pittsburgh, he had accumulated 174 attempts for 738 yards and three touchdowns.

It’s not just reserve running backs the Steelers don’t invest many seasons in. Franco Harris, who retired in 1984, is Pittsburgh’s longest-tenured running back with 11 seasons.

Tennessee offers 2023 Georgia running back

Tennessee offers 2023 Georgia running back.

Tennessee has extended a series of offers to young high school prospects in recent weeks, one of them being 2023 running back Justice Haynes from Roswell, Georgia.

Haynes is a sophomore at Blessed Trinity Catholic and is already developing a reputation among college football recruiters as a smaller, shifty running back. He is a 5-foot-10, 185-pound prospect that checks in as a 4-star and the No. 4 running back in his class according to 247Sports.

Haynes is also a pitcher on the baseball diamond. He has collected offers from Georgia, Arkansas, Florida, Florida State and Georgia Tech.

Haynes’ father Verron Haynes is a former Georgia running back.

Verron Haynes was on the receiving end of a David Greene pass to help Georgia defeat Tennessee in 2001.

Georgia football offers elite RB, son of former UGA star Verron Haynes

The Georgia Bulldogs have offered a scholarship to 4-star running back Justice Haynes, the son UGA standout of Verron Haynes.

The Georgia Bulldogs and head coach Kirby Smart have offered a scholarship to running back Justice Haynes. Haynes has received interest from some of college football’s elite programs despite being only a sophomore in high school.

Justice Haynes, the son of former Georgia Bulldog running back Verron Haynes, plays high school football for Blessed Trinity Catholic in Roswell, Georgia. Verron Haynes is famous in University of Georgia football lure for his last minute receiving touchdown in the Hobnail Boot game, which gave Mark Richt and UGA a huge win over Tennessee.

Justice Haynes has scholarship offers from Tennessee, Florida, Mississippi State, Miami, and more. He was spectacular as a freshman in high school and racked up 1,754 rushing yards along with 18 touchdowns. This helped Haynes be named to the Preseason All-State Georgia high school football team by Max Preps.

Justice Haynes already has committed to the 2023 Under Armour High School All-American Game. He’s a four-star recruit and one of the top running back recruits in his class (he currently holds the No. 4 ranking). Haynes will have a long time to decide where he wants to play college football.

Hayne’s father, Verron, ran for 738 yards over several seasons in Athens. Verron Haynes went on to win a Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL. Best of luck to Justice Haynes moving forward.
