Patriots have been in contact with Seahawks running back Chris Carson

The New England Patriots have been in contact with Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson, who is a pending unrestricted free agent.

The Seattle Seahawks are one of a number of teams who haven’t added a single free agent to the roster yet but have already said goodbye to a couple of players from last year’s squad, including running back Carlos Hyde, who agreed to terms with the Jaguars on Monday.

Seattle could soon be saying goodbye to its starting running back as well if the two sides don’t/can’t/won’t come to an agreement on an extension for unrestricted free agent, Chris Carson.

A number of media outlets are now reporting that Seattle “has made a strong bid” for Buccaneers running back Leonard Fournette, who is currently pondering an existing offer from Tampa Bay. But the Seahawks aren’t the only team interested in adding a running back.

The Patriots have also expressed an interest in “Lombardi Lenny,” but even more intriguing, have been in contact with Carson as well, according to the staff over at Around the NFL.

Seahawks and Shaquill Griffin ‘not in same ballpark’ on money

The Seattle Seahawks and unrestricted free agent Shaquill Griffin are still “not in the same ballpark” when it comes to a new contract.

The official start of free agency is still two days away but the legal tampering period with regards to unrestricted free agents kicked off Monday morning.

Seattle usually makes few if any splashy moves in the first wave of free agency and this year isn’t figuring to look much different. But . . . there are a number of storylines out there surrounding the Seahawks pending free agents and whether they stay in Seattle or go elsewhere.

One of the players to keep a close eye on is cornerback Shaquill Griffin, who is in the top tier of potential available players at his position. Seattle opted not to tag Griffin but still hopes to work a deal to keep him in the Emerald City.

However, the two sides don’t seem to be on the same page when it comes to a fair price tag.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo provided the following update on the Griffin situation on Monday morning.

“The Seahawks would love to have him back,” Garafalo said. “But they’ve had some discussions and are not in the same ballpark on money right now. So Griffin is going to go to the market and see what’s available there and Seattle is saying ‘keep us in the loop, we’d be interested in having you back at a certain number.'”

Garafolo made no mention of what that magic number would be, but it’s safe to assume it is less than Griffin believes he could command on the open, free-agent market.

Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright: ‘Russ isn’t going anywhere’

Seattle Seahawks LB K.J. Wright joined “Good Morning Football” to discuss free agency and QB Russell Wilson’s relationship with the team.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the start of the new league year if he and the team aren’t able to come to an agreement on a new deal.

Wright joined “Good Morning Football” on Friday to discuss his own contract options but it’s what he said about teammate quarterback Russell Wilson that made headlines.

“I was kind of caught off-guard myself but looking back at it, Russ isn’t going anywhere,” Wright said. “As long as I’m in Seattle, Russ is going to be the quarterback. He means too much to us. He means way too much to this organization, he means way too much to this city.”

Wright continued his explanation.

“Usually people want to come to Seattle, not leave Seattle,” he said. “I’m sure him and the organization will get things figured out. He’s somebody that I admire and love playing with, so I expect Russ to be with the Seahawks for a very long time.”

The real question for Wright, however, is how long he will remain with the franchise.

Wright has stated that he’s not interested in a hometown discount, although he does want to stay in Seattle.

The new league year kicks off on March 17 and marks the official start of free agency.

You can watch Wright’s full interview on “Good Morning Football” below.

Why Seahawks should keep pending free agent RB Carlos Hyde over Chris Carson

There is a valid argument to be made that the Seattle Seahawks should keep free-agent running back Carlos Hyde over starter Chris Carson.

With the start of free agency and the new league year just under a month away, teams have a number of decisions to make — most importantly, which players they will fight for to keep on their rosters.

While the NFL and NFLPA agreed to an increase of $5 million on the salary cap floor for 2021, the Seattle Seahawks are one of the few teams that have very little extra cash to spare.

One of Seattle’s toughest questions will be whether to re-sign starting running back Chris Carson or his backup last season, Carlos Hyde.

NFL analyst David Carr is one of those firmly in Hyde’s camp.

“It may come as a surprise that I’m taking Hyde over Chris Carson here, but while the latter may be more explosive, Hyde has experience in the offensive system new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron runs,” Carr writes.

Carr acknowledges quarterback Russell Wilson’s desire to be involved in personnel decisions and the team’s overall need for offensive linemen. Yet he asserts that Hyde’s experience could boost the Seahawks toward their next Super Bowl run.

“Averaging 4.4 rushing yards per carry in limited touches last season, the 30-year-old could pair well with Rashaad Penny, who has one more year on his rookie contract, and give Pete Carroll the more efficient rushing attack he’s looking for,” Carr said.

The decision could become clearer for Seattle once the official salary cap total is announced.

Browns have ‘richest offer on the table’ for Jadeveon Clowney

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported free agent, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has balked at Cleveland – the richest offer on the table to date.

Former Seattle Seahawks defensive end and now free agent, Jadeveon Clowney, doesn’t appear to be in any hurry to sign with an NFL team in the near future.

While Clowney and the Seahawks have clearly had some negotiations, the price hasn’t been right for the former No. 1 overall selection. Seattle, however, isn’t the only team in pursuit of Clowney, as the Browns have been rumored to be in the mix as well.

“I think they’ve been the most aggressive team with him financially,” ESPN’s Adam Shefter said Wednesday on 850 ESPN Cleveland. “I just think he has balked at going to Cleveland for whatever reason. I think he’s been hesitant to go because if he wasn’t he would have gone already because it’s the most money. It’s the richest offer on the table and he hasn’t taken it.”

Schefter then gave his own two cents as to why Clowney wouldn’t follow the most money offered to date.

“Why is that? I don’t know,” Schefter continued. “Is that not wanting to be in that city? Is that a lack of belief in the organization? I don’t know what it is. There’s no doubt that Cleveland has offered the most money to date. For whatever reason he has not been willing to take it so far. That doesn’t mean that it couldn’t change, but it hasn’t changed just yet.”

So as for now, Clowney remains an unrestricted free agent and will likely continue to test the waters until he finds the right fit.

Is free agent DE Jadeveon Clowney losing out this offseason?

Due to the complications of the pandemic, free agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney might have to wait another year for his big contract.

There is no denying defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has remained one of the top unrestricted free agents of the 2020 NFL offseason. Coming off his one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks, Clowney has yet to re-sign with the team or find a new home around the league.

For this reason, ESPN staff writer Bill Barnwell believes he’s one of the biggest losers of this year’s offseason.

“In a similar way to (Cam) Newton’s, Clowney’s market has been depressed by medical concerns and an inability to evaluate those issues under the current climate,” Barnwell writes. “For all we hear about how NFL teams don’t focus on sacks, Clowney’s three-sack total from 2019 hasn’t helped his case. The former first overall pick is unquestionably talented, but the massive deal he might have received under typical circumstances after a more productive season hasn’t arrived.”

Barnwell also reasons that as a result of the current conditions around the league, Clowney might have to wait another season before he lands the long-term contract with the numbers he might be seeking.

“Naturally, it seems like the logical thing for Clowney to do is sign a one-year deal with a contender and try to rebuild his value in the hopes of signing a big deal next year,” Barnwell explains. “Under normal circumstances, that idea makes sense. This isn’t a normal season, though, and there’s a chance that Clowney – and many other veterans – might not be able to sign big contracts next offseason.”

Clowney clearly has a tough choice to make this offseason and cards may no longer be stacked in his favor.

Is Seattle still the best fit for defensive end Jadeveon Clowney?

Are the Seattle Seahawks still the most logical fit for unrestricted free agent Jadeveon Clowney, who remains an unrestricted free agent?

The NFL draft is in the books and so are the first couple of waves of free agency. With that in mind, NFL.com’s Marc Sessler took a look at one burning question each team faces heading into the 2020 regular season.

Sessler asks whether or not the table is set for the Seattle Seahawks to re-sign defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who remains one of the league’s top unrestricted free agents.

“I had the Seahawks pegged as a potential draft-weekend landing spot for disgruntled Jaguars defensive lineman Yannick Ngakoue,” Sessler writes. “The move never happened, leaving Seattle out there as a logical return destination for Clowney.”

“The ‘Hawks aren’t willing to overpay for the run-stuffing, athletic freak, but also failed to draft a clear replacement,” Sessler continues. “Talking after the draft, coach Pete Carroll said Clowney ‘knows that the Seahawks are a place that he had some success, and that he had a really good time and he contributed to our club and all of that. . . . ‘If there’s an opportunity that makes sense, we’ll dive back in and pursue it.’

“While the Browns have been linked to Clowney, too, Seattle felt like home a year ago. Carroll and Co. could use him, too, if the greenbacks make sense.”

However, recent reports have suggested that Clowney is willing to be patient this offseason and see whether or not he’s eventually able to command a contract with the numbers he’s been waiting for.

Seahawks agree to terms with left guard Mike Iupati

The Seattle Seahawks have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with veteran left guard Mike Iupati.

The Seattle Seahawks are keeping another one of their own after agreeing to terms with left guard Mike Iupati. The terms of the deal have yet to be announced but the contract is for just one year, according to a number of reports.

Iupati first signed with the Seahawks an undrafted free agent last spring. For Seattle in 2019, he started 15 of 16 regular-season games played before sitting out the playoffs due to a neck injury.

The Seahawks have been busy beefing up the offensive line this offseason, having signed center B.J. Finney, guard Chance Warmack and tackle Cedric Ogbuehi to the roster. As a result, center Justin Britt could easily result in a cap casualty, saving Seattle much-needed space.

Iupati will join a plethora of guards to compete to regain his starting position once facilities open back up and teams can resume offseason activities. For now, the voluntary virtual program is set to kick off on April 27.

Are chances of Jadeveon Clowney re-signing with Seahawks slim to none?

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo recently reported that the chances of Jadeveon Clowney re-signing with the Seattle Seahawks are slim to none.

Seattle Seahawks fans received a disappointing piece of news Tuesday when NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that the chances of defensive end Jadeveon Clowney returning to the Emerald City are slim to none.

Garafolo joined Seattle Sports Radio KJR and stated the Seahawks are not chasing Clowney at the moment and are instead pursuing alternative options along the defensive line.

The Seahawks have already added defensive ends Bruce Irvin and Benson Mayowa to the roster this free agency period.

Clowney has been waiting for the right deal over the last few weeks and he appears to have still not found what he is seeking after lowering his asking price.

There is no question that he will sign with an NFL team, it is simply a matter of which team he chooses and when he signs, however, some clubs may need to move forward sooner than later with the NFL draft set to kick off on April 23.

Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is USA TODAY’s top available free agent

Former Seattle Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is USA TODAY’s top available free agent remaining after the first week of deals.

Some of the top unrestricted free agents are already off the board after the first week of the NFL’s wheeling and dealing, however, one name remains at the top of the list of the bests players yet to come to terms on a new deal – (former) Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney,.

Nate Davis of USA TODAY Sports ranks Clowney the league’s top available free agent.

“The No. 1 pick of the 2014 draft remains the clear-cut top talent without an employer, ” Davis writes. “According to multiple reports, Clowney, 27, has not received the windfall proposal he’d hoped for … despite an environment where 49ers DL Arik Armstead got a five-year, $85 million deal and his former teammate, DeForest Buckner, reeled in a four-year, $84 million extension after getting traded to the Colts.”

Clowney could very well be considering whether or not to re-sign with Seattle but could also opt to wait things out until club facilities open back up and he’s able to travel safely for physicals and visits.

Until he and his camp make a decision, he’ll stay on top as the best free agent still available.
