Georgia football special teams coordinator leaving the program

Georgia football special teams coordinator Scott Cochran is no longer with UGA

In Georgia football’s latest coaching staff move, Georgia Bulldogs special teams coordinator Scott Cochran is no longer with the team. Cochran, who had served as Georgia’s special teams coordinator since 2020, helped Georgia have one of the top special teams units in the country. In fact, the Georgia special teams did not allow a punt return all season in 2023.

Cochran is widely known for being a memorable strength coach under Nick Saban at Alabama. Cochran has been on the staff of eight national championship teams (five at Alabama, two at Georgia, and one at LSU).

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart, who has coached with Cochran for 13 seasons, was able to lure the former Alabama strength coach to Athens, Georgia, with an on-field role. Georgia’s special teams played well under Cochran, but should continue to excel in the future considering Georgia’s recruiting prowess and returning players.

Additionally, former Texas A&M offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey will no longer be on Georgia’s coaching staff. Kirby Smart released the following statement thanking Dickey and Cochran.

I want to thank Scott and Darrell for their contributions to Georgia football. We wish them all the best moving forward.

Georgia is promoting Kirk Benedict to be Georgia’s new special teams coordinator.

Former South Carolina coach Will Muschamp working as analyst at UGA

Former South Carolina and Florida head coach Will Muschamp has been working with Georgia football in recent weeks

Former South Carolina and Florida head coach Will Muschamp has been working with Georgia football in recent weeks. Now, Kirby Smart has confirmed Muchamp’s role with the University of Georgia.

Muschamp played safety at Georgia and has coached defensive backs multiple times over his coaching career. He’ll be a defensive analyst at Georgia and is scheduled to make $300,000. Muschamp will also receive a buyout nearing $15 million from South Carolina.

The UGA alum (1991-1994) was fired by the Gamecocks before the end of the 2020 college football season. At South Carolina, Muschamp ended his career with a record of 28-30 overall.

Before coaching at South Carolina, Muschamp spent time as Auburn’s defensive coordinator in 2015 and was the head coach of the Florida Gators.

Coach Kirby Smart and Muschamp are friends, who both played together at UGA. They have coached together multiple times including stints with Valdosta State, LSU and the Miami Dolphins. Muschamp’s son, Jackson Muschamp, joined the Georgia program as a walk-on quarterback.

Muschamp played safety at Georgia and has coached defensive backs multiple times over his coaching career. His experience against Clemson, the SEC East, and more will be an asset for Georgia next season.
