Miesha Tate has title plans in UFC comeback but not rushing path to top: ‘I just want to start with Saturday’

Taking part in a UFC fight week for the first time in nearly five years, Miesha Tate says she feels like she’s right back where she belongs.

LAS VEGAS – Taking part in a UFC fight week for the first time in nearly five years, former women’s bantamweight champion [autotag]Miesha Tate[/autotag] says she feels like she’s right back where she belongs.

“It’s like that old friend that you haven’t talked to in years, and you call him up and you haven’t skipped a beat,” Tate told MMA Junkie at Wednesday’s media day at the UFC Apex. “You know, that’s how I feel. I just feel at home with this. It’s very natural, and I’m the happiest to be here that I’ve been in a very long time.”

Tate walked away from the sport following a 2016 loss to Raquel Pennington. That was just one fight removed from losing the UFC women’s bantamweight title to Amanda Nunes, and Tate was still very much considered an elite competitor in the division. However, she admits she simply didn’t have the desire to carry on.

“I just had too much on my plate, and especially, like, baggage that I just really didn’t need,” Tate said. “I needed to clear away things that were taking away from me as a person, as a human being. We’re all humans, and I think we’ve all been through rough patches in our life, right? So that was just a really rough time for me, and I just needed to step away and regroup – and I kind of identified that as with the sport. But to be honest, when I have taken this four years away and I look at it, I am more in love with the sport than I have ever been. So it wasn’t that, it was just the entanglement of everything, and that included this sport, and when I had to step away from the toxicity, that meant I had to step away from the sport, too, because I just didn’t know how to detangle the knot, you know, until I was outside of it.”

Tate says those entanglements have been cleared and feels happier in her life outside the sport than ever before. She’s given birth to two children in the interim and believes the happiness in her family life has translated to her excitement to return to the cage, as well. Tate (18-7 MMA, 5-4 UFC) takes that step at Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 26, when she meets Marion Reneau (9-7-1 MMA, 5-6-1 UFC) at the UFC Apex. The full card airs on ESPN and streams live on ESPN+.

The bout actually serves as Reneau’s retirement fight, but Tate isn’t thinking she’s getting a depleted version of “The Belizean Bruiser.”

“I think Marion is great,” Tate said. “I just really admire her. I think she’s very solid. I don’t think she has a lot of holes in her game. She’s a black belt in jiu-jitsu. She has that strong submission over Sara McMann – so impressive. She has a great submission over Jessica Andrade, and she stays in fights. You know, the fights she has lost have always been very close. She’s lost a number of split decisions.

“She’s been on the verge of being a contender a number of times, and she just didn’t get her break, but the way that I look at this fight and the Marion Reneau that I prepared for is is a mother who’s going to have her son in the corner for the first time, who’s going to look at somebody that matters between rounds and say, ‘I don’t want to let that person down.’ You know what I mean? I could only imagine as a mother if I physically saw my children between the rounds – like, it’s going to charge her, and she’s going to come, and she’s going to bring it.”

Tate isn’t viewing this comeback as a one-off. To the contrary, the former champion has said she intends on getting her belt back and believes she’s actually a better fighter now than she was when she walked away. She gets a chance to prove that on Saturday, and with an impressive performance may quickly find herself in even bigger fights. After all, Tate was always a marketable commodity for the promotion, and UFC brass certainly wouldn’t seem to mind having her back at the top of the ranks again.

[lawrence-related id=637412,635923]

However, “Cupcake” says she doesn’t exactly what her path back to the top will entail. She just knows it starts on Saturday night, and she has to deliver.

“I just want to start with Saturday,” Tate said. “I think it’s very important that I get that win and I don’t look too far ahead, you know? I am somebody who has short-term, mid-term, long-term goals, so there’s a way that I would like for it to go in a perfect world, but I know that I need to accomplish this.

“It’s imperative that I get this win for my trajectory, and, you know, I think it’s not unrealistic to say that if I have the performances that I’m planning on having, that it could be as little as three fights until I’m back into a title shot. If I’m beating (people) and I’m continuing to move up and I’m climbing the ranks, you know, that I think is a fair assumption, but I just want to start with Saturday, and see how that goes.”

Jeremy Stephens has jokes ahead of UFC on ESPN 26: ‘When I shove people, they don’t f-cking move’

Jeremy Stephens still isn’t happy that his bout with Drakkar Klose was scrapped, but he’s far enough removed that he can laugh about it.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Jeremy Stephens[/autotag] still isn’t exactly happy about having his April bout with Drakkar Klose scrapped following a shove at the event’s ceremonial weigh-ins, but he’s at least far enough removed from the incident that he can enjoy a good laugh about it.

Stephens said in the aftermath of Klose’s withdrawal, he saw a meme of himself parodying his infamous, “When I knock people out, they don’t f-cking move,” line from an even more infamous 2016 press conference, and he had to restrain himself from sharing it on social media.

“‘When I shove people, they don’t f-cking move’ – you hear that, dude?” Stephens asked MMA Junkie at Wednesday’s media day at the UFC Apex. “I mean honestly after the fight, after that kind of went down, like I saw that, and like I really wanted to retweet it, but I didn’t – but it was just f-cking hilarious.”

Stephens didn’t find it quite as hilarious that he didn’t get his show money for the card despite his willingness to compete. Still, he’s not promising that if future opponents get in his face they won’t receive the same treatment.

“The human side of me was like, you know, that maybe could have waited,” Stephens said. “But, you know, the primal side was like, ‘Nah, f-ck that, bro. You broke protocol.’

“He gets right in my face and touches nose and nose, and to me, it was just like disrespect, bro. I’m showing up for a different reason. I was really showing up to really concuss him on Saturday night. I mean, call it brutal, what it is, but you watch my highlight tape. You know what I’m here to do, and to me, it was just disrespectful. Like we could have had it. We could have had a good fight.”

[lawrence-related id=636439,636937]

Stephens (28-18 MMA, 15-17 UFC) has since moved on from the Klose matchup and said he’s really not interested in rebooking it moving forward. Instead, he now faces Mateusz Gamrot (18-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 26 at the UFC Apex. The card airs on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

Stephens said he’s actually excited to face a guy he finds more dangerous than Klose.

“You know, he’s another guy I feel like is going to want to be taking me down,” Stephens said. “Trains with a great camp at American Top Team, so they gameplan really well, but he’s going to find out in there. It’s hard to gameplan against a dude just throwing bricks and shotguns at your chest and body and is able to defend takedowns, as well.”

For Stephens, the frustration of the April incident still looms large in the background, but he insists it won’t impact his performance on Saturday night. After all, Stephens has been competing professionally since 2005 and has a well-earned reputation at this point in his career.

“Lil’ Heathen” has seen it all, but when the cage door shuts, nothing changes.

“Every night is a big night, man – your ass is on the chopping block every time you get in the UFC, even if you’re on a win streak,” Stephens said. “You don’t give a f-ck, man. You got to go out there and do your thing, but I don’t want to ever put that pressure on. I can just fight. I can scrap. I just have it naturally, you know? I know that, but I know that I want to win. I don’t want to f-cking lose. I don’t want to be one of them guys, just come in like, ‘Oh, I had a great performance.’ No, I want to put people away. I want to win.

“You know, like I’ve been telling people, the money is for my family, for my future, for them to play softball, for them to do their thing. I just want the f-cking win. I just to stand over your body after I concussed you and you’re laying there, and just almost like, ‘Aargh!” That’s the win, bro. That’s what I chase, is f-cking the adrenaline.”

Thiago Moises not buying into Islam Makhachev comparisons: ‘Islam is definitely not like Khabib’

Thiago Moises doesn’t think the comparisons between Islam Makhachev and Khabib Nurmagomedov are fair.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Thiago Moises[/autotag] thinks his experience in five-round fights gives him the edge over [autotag]Islam Makhachev[/autotag] in the UFC on ESPN 26 headliner.

After Saturday’s original main event between Max Holloway and Yair Rodriguez fell off the card, the lightweight bout between Moises (15-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC) and Makhachev (19-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) was promoted to the top slot for the ESPN-televised event at the UFC Apex.

Shifting from three rounds to five was welcomed with Moises because he’s been scheduled for 25 minutes multiple times prior to joining the UFC. Makhachev cannot make the same claim, so before they even get in the octagon, Moises thinks he’s bringing an advantage.

“I did a couple more rounds in sparring, a couple little things in the strength and conditioning department,” Moises told MMA Junkie and other reporters at UFC on ESPN 26 media day. “I’ve done five rounds three times before, and I think this is going to be an advantage for me to be honest with you, because Islam never did this before.”

Even with the advantage experience in his back pocket, few at giving Moises a chance to beat Makhachev, who is one of the most highly touted rising names at 155 pounds. The Russian is a good friend and teammate of former UFC champ Khabib Nurmagomedov, and the comparisons between the two have been endless.

Moises doesn’t see them as all that similar, though. He gives Makhachev full respect, but said Nurmagomedov is a different animal.

“I think Khabib has a higher pace than him,” Moises said. “Khabib doesn’t stop. More pressure. I think Islam is a little bit more technical on the feet. For me, Khabib is the best lightweight of all time. Nobody’s like Khabib, and Islam is definitely not like Khabib. That’s the biggest difference between them, is, I think, the pace.”

If Moises is able to overcome Makhachev, he would be on a four-fight winning streak over some strong competition. He sees this fight as his breakthrough moment to gain further recognition and said he’ll be seeking a big name afterward.

“I think with a win over Islam I deserve a top 5 opponent,” Moises said. “I’m going to be right in the mix for a title match.”
