See highlights, reaction from UFC 255 main event as Figueiredo submits Perez in the first

See all the highlights from the UFC 255 main event Figueiredo vs. Perez, and the reaction from MMA fans.

The UFC 255 main event on Saturday night was a flyweight bout between the heavily touted Brazilian fighter Deiveson Figueiredo and Alex Perez.

Figueiredo didn’t disappoint, earning a knockout by submission in the first round.

The fight got off to a nice start with Perez landing some counter-punches, but it became clear quickly he wouldn’t be able to handle Figueiredo’s speed or power. After Figueiredo landed some punishing kicks early, it took one grapple for him to get Perez in a mean hold. Perez tapped out just after that, and Figueiredo improved his career record to 20-1-0 as a professional.

He’s clearly a star in the making. Below you’ll see some highlights from the fight, video analysis, and down below the reaction from MMA aficionados.

UFC fighter accidentally gets Beyoncé ‘Halo’ as walk-up music, starts singing along anyway

“Is this [expletive] ‘Halo?'” Perry asked to his corner as they walked out.

Mike Perry was walking into his UFC 255 bout on Saturday night when an unexpected song started blaring over the loudspeakers.

“Is this [expletive] ‘Halo?'” Perry asked to his corner as they walked out.

It was indeed the track “Halo” by Beyoncé. Somehow, Perry’s first choice for walk-up song hadn’t been available, so they went with a dreamy slow jam for him to enter to.

Perry didn’t let that phase him, however. He leaned into the moment, and started belting out the words along with the song just before the official checked him in. The man went for it, and we should applaud him for that.

Perry ended up losing a decision to Tim Means in their welterweight fight, and I’m not sure if we should be blaming Beyoncé for that or not.

Deiveson Figueiredo angry about bonus snub, but vows to ‘destroy’ Brandon Moreno

Deiveson Figueiredo is not happy he was snubbed for a post-fight bonus, but he sounds ready to take it out on Brandon Moreno.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Devision Figueiredo[/autotag] sure thought he deserved a “Performance of the Night” bonus after submitting Alex Perez in under two minutes on Saturday in the main event of UFC 255.

So when UFC president Dana White said he wanted Figueiredo (24-6 MMA, 6-2 UFC)  to stick around in Vegas and fight Brandon Moreno in December, he wasn’t enthused about the idea.

“He was real disappointed when he didn’t get the bonus of the night because of the performance that he gave for the fans,” said Figueiredo’s trainer, Wallid Ismail. “And I pushed him to stay here and not come back to Brazil, because Dec. 12 is now. But I’m going to talk to Dana and Hunter (Campbell) and I’m going to push him to stay because it’s good for the fight, it’s good for the sport to show his power.”

Indeed, once he wrapped his brain around the concept, Figueiredo said he’s ready to prove something against the top contender, who beat Brandon Royval earlier in the evening.

“I think I’m going to destroy him. I think I’m going to break him just as much, because Brandon Moreno talk a lot of bad things,” Figueiredo said through interpreter Ismail. “(He has) a personal problem with Brandon Moreno. I’m going to destroy Brandon Moreno. But the boss shows the desire to see this fight.”

Figueiredo, while still sore about not getting a bonus, says he’s not worried about making the flyweight limit again on short notice.

“The pressure I’m going to have (to make) weight he’s going to have,” he said. “We’re in the same spot. It’s a war for both sides. If I’m going to have the pressure, he’s going to have the pressure. But now I’m going back to the hotel, because I put on a wonderful show for you guys tonight. I’m the kind of champion who says what I’m going to do and then do it. And I don’t get the bonus of the night? I said, ‘Hey, Dana, if you really like me, and I fight here, you need to give me the bonus of the night for sure.’ Because I deserve it. I performed. I bring back excitement.”

For now, Figueiredo is content with his first title defense, one which may be the first of many.

“I’m very patient,” he said. “I know this is my belt. I know I am going to be the champion for a long time. I have no pressure at all. I come here to do what I told everyone I am going to do: (I’m) going to submit in the first round.”

Valentina Shevchenko eyes quick turnaround after UFC 255, mentions Jessica Andrade and Lauren Murphy

Valentina Shevchenko just fought in the co-main event of UFC 255 on Saturday and she’s already planning her return.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Valentina Shevchenko[/autotag] just fought Saturday and she’s already planning her return.

The UFC women’s flyweight champion, Shevchenko (19-3 MMA, 8-2 UFC) defeated challenger Jennifer Maia (18-6-1 MMA, 3-2 UFC) by unanimous decision in the UFC 255 co-main event.

At a post-fight news conference, Shevchenko revealed she hopes to stay active in the immediate future. While she wants to come back soon, the opponent doesn’t matter. She’ll fight whomever the UFC offers.

In a just world, Shevchenko said, there’s a fair contender fight to make. However, she’s afraid a No. 1 contender fight between [autotag]Jessica Andrade[/autotag] and [autotag]Lauren Murphy[/autotag] would isolate her from returning for her next title defense.

“I don’t choose my opponents,” Shevchenko said. “Whoever will be in front of me (is) who I’m going to face. For me, it doesn’t (make) any difference – Andrade or someone else, someone else, or whoever. I think it would be fair to have Andrade vs. Lauren Murphy because Lauren Murphy showed her strengths and has a lot of wins – like, straight wins.

“But the question (is) if I want to wait that much. I don’t want to wait that much because I was waiting a lot already and I’m not agreeing to wait more (for) their fight (to happen) and (for when) they have to recover. It’s going to be a few months from here. I’m ready to go back to the octagon as soon as I feel good and I feel good.”

Andrade (21-8 MMA, 12-6 UFC) made her 125-pound debut on Oct. 18 after back-to-back losses as strawweight. In her lone UFC flyweight appearance to date, Andrade earned a first-round TKO finish over former UFC women’s flyweight title challenger Katlyn Chookagian.

After years of competition in the UFC, Murphy (14-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) has strung together one of the longest winning streaks of her career. Her current four-fight winning streak was topped off by a second-round submission of Lilya Shakirova at UFC 254 on Oct. 24.

With her win at UFC 255, Shevchenko successfully defended her 125-pound title for the fourth consecutive time and extended her winning streak to six. Her only UFC losses came at bantamweight against current UFC bantamweight and featherweight champion Amanda Nunes in 2015 and 2017.

UFC 255 took place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The main card streamed on pay-per-view after prelims on ESPN+/ESPN2/UFC Fight Pass.

UFC 255 bonuses: Entertaining upstarts take ‘Fight of the Night’

The curtain-jerker turned into a barnburner, then “Fight of the Night” was already settled.

UFC 255 was proof that anyone from the opening bout to the top of the card can go home with an extra $50,000.

As is custom, four competitors are going home with post-fight bonuses thanks to their efforts in the cage at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Saturday’s event featured a “Fight of the Night” award and two “Performance of the Night” efforts.

A look at the evening’s bonus winners, kicking off with “Fight of the Night” from the evening’s curtain jerker:

Dana White: UFC looking to turn Deiveson Figueiredo around vs. Brandon Moreno in December

Dana White likes to say he never makes matchups the night of the fights, but UFC 255 proved an exception to the rule.

LAS VEGAS – Dana White likes to say he never makes matchups the night of the fights, but UFC 255 proved an exception to the rule.

Moments after UFC flyweight champion [autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag] submitted Alex Perez in less than two minutes Saturday and retained his title, the UFC president announced the promotion is hoping to turn him around quickly.

According to White, the UFC is targeting Figueiredo (20-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) vs. Mexican flyweight Brandon Moreno, who defeated Brandon Royval by TKO in the UFC 255 featured prelim.

“We’re going to keep (Figueiredo) here,” White told MMA Junkie at the post-fight news conference. “He’s not going back to Brazil. We’re going to turn him right around (in) December. That’s what we’re working on.”

UFC 255 was Figueiredo’s first title defense. With the win, he extended his winning streak to five. Over the span of his 10 UFC fights, Figueiredo has picked up seven finishes, including a title-clinching submission of Joseph Benavidez in a match for the vacant belt on July 19.

Moreno (18-5-1 MMA, 6-0-1 UFC) is 4-0-1 in his most recent five outings. The UFC portion of the streak includes wins over Royval, Jussier Formiga and Kai Kara-France – and a split draw with Askar Askarov.

UFC 255 took place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The main card aired on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN2/ESPN+.

Mike Perry walked out to Beyonce’s ‘Halo’ at UFC 255 by mistake, and it was hilarious

It seems whoever was running the music at UFC 255 played the wrong song for Mike Perry LOL.

When a fighter chooses a walkout song, he or she picks it for a reason. It’s the last thing they want to hear to mentally prepare themselves for combat. Some might say that’s vitally important before stepping inside a cage to get punched in the face.

Could you imagine what it could do to a fighter if a different song played by mistake?

That apparently happened Saturday night at UFC 255, where [autotag]Mike Perry[/autotag] walked out to … drum roll please … “Halo” by Beyonce. Perry looked to be surprised as hell, but he went with the flow and sang along for perhaps the funniest moment at a UFC event this year.

Check this out (via Twitter):

We’re not sure what Perry’s song was supposed to be, and unfortunately for him, Beyonce’s beautiful voice didn’t help. Perry was busted up by Tim Means in their fight at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, losing a unanimous decision by scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.

If you feel like belting out “Halo,” have at it:
