Injured former Notre Dame defensive lineman enters transfer portal

Good luck to him.

Aiden Gobaira is a name you probably forgot about because he only played one snap for Notre Dame. After the defensive lineman played that single snap in 2022, he tore his ACL in fall camp for the 2023 season and never saw game action then.

Gobaira’s time with the Irish came to an end when he was placed on medical scholarship during the offseason. It was a tough blow to say the least.

Gobaira isn’t giving up on a career in college football though. On3’s Pete Nakos is reporting that he has entered the transfer portal. While he still will be a Notre Dame student, he will be allowed to played football with a different program. Tyson Ford, another injured Irish defensive lineman in a similar situation, already is following the same path.

While it’s unfortunate that Gobaira’s time with the Irish didn’t work out, at least he gets another chance to play college football:

Best of luck to Gobaira wherever he plays next.

Notre Dame football loses another player to the transfer portal

Not a huge loss, but still significant

While we all knew what Notre Dame football cornerback Jaden Mickey’s intentions were to enter the transfer portal, which he did today.

What we didn’t know about was what defensive [autotag]Tyson Ford[/autotag] has been pondering. The third-year player had left the program during the spring, as he was trying to decide what he wanted to do.

Well, he made his decision on Tuesday, as the 6-foot, 5-inch and 260-pounder will also enter the transfer portal. As a prospect Ford was the nation’s No. 120 overall player according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Ford signing with the Irish was clearly a huge recruiting win, but unfortunately never lived up to the hype. He registered just one tackle during his career in South Bend, as he will look for a new home in the coming months.

It’s not a huge loss for Notre Dame, as his departure from the program earlier this year already put some of the writing on the wall.

We wish Tyson the best as searches for his next team.

Notre Dame football sees two players medically retire

Sad news for the Irish

There has been plenty of positive news for Notre Dame football recently, but the Irish received some bad news on Friday.

According to a report by On3’s Jack Soble, two defensive lineman, [autotag]Aiden Gobaira[/autotag] and [autotag]Tyson Ford[/autotag], have been placed on medical scholarship, which means their football careers in South Bend have ended.

Gobaira, a sophomore from Virginia, didn’t see the field much and never registered a stat. Ford also received minimal playing time, though he was credited with a tackle in the blowout win over Tennessee State this past fall.

Each came into the program with high expectations. Both were ranked as four-star prospects out of high school on the 247Sports composite.

It’s unfortunate these players couldn’t live out their dreams of playing in the Blue and Gold, but at least they’ll move on from the game with a fantastic degree.

Notre Dame lands massive defensive commitment in transfer portal

Notre Dame continues to load up through the portal!

[autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] hasn’t won as many games as Notre Dame football fans would like through his first two seasons but there is one place he has won big and repeatedly: the transfer portal.

After restocking the wide receiver group recently and landing a second quarterback from the ACC in as many years earlier in the week, Freeman and Notre Dame landed a big-time defensive commitment Wednesday.

Pass-rush specialist RJ Oben, previously of Duke, is now headed to Notre Dame.  He made the announcement on social media.

Oben is coming off a year where he was a major key on Duke’s solid defense.  He totaled five sacks, 17 tackles, six tackles for loss, and another six quarterback hurries this past season.

Oben will be key in replacing another transfer, Javantae Jean-Baptiste, who transferred from Ohio State before the 2023 season.

Oben stands 6-4, 260-pounds and figures to jump to the head of the depth chart at one defensive end position.  Inexperienced [autotag]Aidan Gobaira[/autotag] and [autotag]Tyson Ford[/autotag] also figure to play the position going forward.

As the defense loses some key pieces for 2024, adding Oben certainly lessens the blow to what was a very solid defensive line in 2023.

Five outcomes we’d love to see during the Blue & Gold game for Notre Dame

The culmination of the spring football season is upon us, the Blue and Gold game is set to be on our screens and for some of us, in the stands of Notre Dame Stadium. For the most part all the work these players have put in has been behind the scenes, but now, they emerge from the shadows of Irish Athletic Complex and give us a sneak peak of what’s to come this fall. Here are five outcomes we’d love to see come out of the spring.

Where the Notre Dame 2022 recruiting class ranked according to the experts

It was a solid “first” cycle for Freeman

It was once called Christmas in February, when there was not an early signing period in college football. When it first started, no one really knew what to expect, but after the first one in 2017, the precedence was set.

The majority of athletes would go on to sign in December, making the first Wednesday in February not nearly as exciting. That was exactly the case for Notre Dame, who entered the day with 21 commits and will finish the day with the same number.

Even though there wasn’t much excitement, there Irish still finished among the top class in the county and here is where they ranked according to 247Sports, ESPN and Rivals.
