Lions injury tracker: All the players on injured reserve entering Week 6

The updated Detroit Lions injury tracker includes 8 players who would be starters currently on IR

It’s been a very rough season for the Detroit Lions. Winless through five weeks, the team has suffered through a nasty wave of injuries to key players. And the list keeps growing.

Last week’s sobering look at how many players are unavailable to the team due to either injury or dead cap has expanded, unfortunately. Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow will miss the rest of the season with a toe injury that required surgery. He was out for Week 5 as well but now officially joins the throng of Lions on the IR list.

Here’s the updated cadre of Lions either on the IR or non-football injury reserved lists as of October 13th:

  • Taylor Decker, starting left tackle
  • Frank Ragnow, starting center
  • Tyrell Williams, starting wide receiver
  • Quintez Cephus, starting wide receiver (in place of Williams)
  • Tyrell Crosby, offensive tackle (would start in place of Decker)
  • Tim Boyle, backup quarterback
  • Romeo Okwara, starting outside linebacker
  • Jeff Okudah, starting cornerback
  • Ifeatu Melifonwu, starting CB (in place of Okudah)
  • Da’Shawn Hand, defensive end
  • Kevin Strong, defensive end
  • Joel Heath, defensive end
  • Shaun Dion Hamilton, linebacker
  • Charlie Taumopeau, tight end (NFI)
  • Hunter Bryant, tight end (NFI)

That’s eight different players who would be starting right now, six of them regular projected starters. The list includes the team’s two best offensive linemen, the top wideout, the No. 1 and No. 2 cornerbacks and the WR leader in receiving yards after five games.

Dan Campbell on Tyrell Williams potential return: ‘It’s off in the distance’

“That doesn’t look good right now. I would say that’s still off in the distance for sure, ” Campbell stated when asked for a possible timetable on Williams’ return.

Any hope that the Detroit Lions wide receiving corps could get the much-needed bolster from veteran Tyrell Williams in Week 6 has been dashed. After offering a glimmer of optimism about a possible return from Williams on Monday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell squashed it on Tuesday morning.

“We’ll know more on Tyrell after tomorrow, as well,” Campbell said on Monday, leading to some optimism that the top wideout could begin his comeback process. But that is not in the cards.

In a radio appearance on 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit, Campbell revealed that the progress back from a serious concussion suffered in Week 1 will keep Williams out through this week, and perhaps longer.

“That doesn’t look good right now. I would say that’s still off in the distance for sure, ” Campbell stated when asked for a possible timetable on Williams’ return.

Williams played just 35 snaps in the opener against the San Francisco 49ers. He has not even participated in the required noncontact practice session to even begin coming out of the NFL’s concussion protocol. With such a lengthy time out due to the concussion, it unfortunately seems like this could be a brain injury that impacts Williams for a long time.

The good news is that Campbell did not offer any discouraging words on the possible return of left tackle Taylor Decker, who has not played this season with a finger injury.

Lions could get Taylor Decker and Tyrell Williams back for Week 6

The Lions are hopeful they could get LT Taylor Decker and WR Tyrell Williams back for Week 6

Help could be on the way for the walking wounded Detroit Lions. Two of the team’s top offensive starters, left tackle Taylor Decker and wide receiver Tyrell Williams, have a chance to return to the active lineup from the injured list this week.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell offered some hope that both Decker and Williams could be in the lineup for the Week 6 visit from the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

“Yeah, I think there’s hope,” Campbell said about the veteran left tackle. “We’re going to see where Decker is at Wednesday. At least that’s where we’ll begin.”

Williams hasn’t played since suffering a concussion in Week 1. He has yet to appear in the first stages of progress to getting back on the field in the NFL’s concussion protocol, but that process could fire up this week.

“We’ll know more on Tyrell after tomorrow, as well,” Campbell said.

A return from Williams couldn’t come soon enough with wideout Quintez Cephus headed to the injured reserve list with a broken collarbone.

In addition to the two offensive starters, Campbell definitively stated that defensive end Kevin Strong will return this week. Strong has been on IR since Week 3 with a thigh injury.

Lions Wire fantasy football weekly: 2021 Week 5 preview

Our Derek Okrie brings you the breakdown for Week 5 fantasy football options

This past Sunday the Detroit Lions just didn’t do the simple things needed to win. Is that same thing true for your fantasy football team?

Don’t tell me you decided to not play a top star and that player put up big points on your bench. Did you let an injured player sit on your roster too long and not replace them using your waiver wire privileges?

This past week we saw stars such as Tyreek Hill (WR Chiefs), Saquon Barkley (RB Giants), and Ezekiel Elliott (RB Cowboys) all put up those game-changing statistics you need to win in fantasy football. Please promise you did the basics and played those guys leading to fantasy success – right?

Lions at Vikings fantasy focus

One of the basic things the Lions didn’t do well was featuring their top offensive weapons. Their top fantasy targets, T.J. Hockenson and D’Andre Swift, didn’t see many targets. They will need to be the focal point this week in a rowdy dome in Minnesota when they face the Vikings.

Sleeper wide receiver options for the Lions appear to be Kalif Raymond and Quintez Cephus. Other than those options though, it will be tough for the Lions to be potent on offense from a fantasy football perspective.

The Minnesota Vikings got Dalvin Cook back on the field last week and he always gives the Lions issues when they face-off. Kirk Cousins the Vikings quarterback is another player that always plays well against Detroit.

With injuries across the board, the Lions are in a tough spot this week. They have to find a way to score points in a tough stadium to play in with offensive line issues at multiple spots. While doing all that, they also have to prevent the Vikings from stressing their young defense in a multitude of ways. Expect to play most of your Vikings fantasy players and sit many Lions in this one.

Bottom Line

Don’t hurt yourself this week in fantasy football. Those mistakes of starting the wrong players, forgetting to substitute out an injured player, or playing a top player with a horrible matchup can cost you.

Often you hear NFL players say we have to focus on the fundamentals. Those basic essentials in fantasy football would be paying attention to the weekly projections, matchups, and managing injuries with timely waiver claims. Focus on the fundamentals and give your fantasy team the best chance to win in Week 5 of the National Football League.

Lions Wire fantasy football weekly: 2021 Week 4 preview

Our Derek Okrie breaks down the week in fantasy football

As the fantasy football season progresses the depth of your roster is key as injuries pile up. Bye weeks will be here before you know it too. Don’t hesitate to look ahead at a player’s schedule to be ahead of the game before his bye week hits you.

Future opponents are also vital. If you look two or three weeks ahead on some of your fringe starters, that might tell you whether it is best to keep them on your roster or make a move before they have a difficult stretch of opponents to play.

The idea is to be ahead of the trends and prevent your team from being derailed by things such as injuries, bye weeks, or multiple tough opponents ahead. Don’t be the fantasy owner that fails to prepare and therefore prepares to fail.

Lions at Bears fantasy focus

Speaking of preparation, the Detroit Lions will have to prepare for numerous quarterback combinations this Sunday against the Chicago Bears. Could all three quarterbacks play? No, that couldn’t happen or could it?

Justin Fields, the Bears dynamic rookie quarterback, had a very rough outing last week to say the least. Chicago couldn’t wait to see Fields. but after only one week, they did not like what they saw. Andy Dalton is the veteran and appears he might be healthy enough to start again if head coach Matt Nagy turns it back over to him. Nick Foles has also been said to be a possible option this week.

The Lions have been making nice progress with some of their fantasy football stars such as D’Andre Swift and T.J. Hockenson, but teams are also starting to focus on them. Will they be able to get production from others to free up the top players to shine?

Lots of questions in this matchup and not many answers right now. Both teams will prepare and do what they feel gives them the best chance to win. If Fields (QB Bears) is the starting quarterback, look for him to have a bounce-back performance and feel confident playing David Montgomery (RB Bears) and Allen Robinson (WR Bears). The spotlight for the Lions will be on Jared Goff and can he get it done with his lackluster fantasy worthy wide receivers.

Bottom Line

NFL teams often view their seasons in quarters. After this week the first quarter will basically be complete and fantasy owners can do the same. This is when you honestly look at your team and start to determine what you have and also what you don’t have.

It is a perfect time to seek out trade options and make some aggressive moves if your team needs it. If you are winning, protect yourself against injuries and look ahead at those bye weeks. It’s a marathon and not a sprint more than ever in the NFL and in fantasy football in the biggest season of all-time here in 2021.

Lions place Tyrell Williams on I.R. among series of roster moves

The Detroit Lions place Tyrell Williams on I.R. among series of roster moves that includes a change at kicker

The Detroit Lions kept the NFL’s transaction wire busy on Thursday with a series of moves.

The most notable move is the Lions placing WR Tyrell Williams on injured reserve with his concussion. Williams suffered his brain injury in Week 1 and has not progressed enough to be able to practice. The team’s top wideout will not be eligible to return until Week 6.

There will also be a change at kicker. Regular Lions PK Austin Seibert was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Thursday. The Lions quickly signed Ryan Santoso from the practice squad to replace Seibert. Santoso signed to Detroit’s practice squad on Wednesday and takes over as the kicker for Week 3 less than a day later.

Williams’ spot on the 53-man roster goes to linebacker Josh Woods, who was signed off the Chicago Bears practice squad. Linebacker Jamie Collins remains with the team for now, though the Lions are actively attempting to trade the veteran.

Lions Wire fantasy football weekly: 2021 Week 3 preview

Our Derek Okrie breaks down the week in fantasy football with special emphasis on the Lions vs. Ravens

Another exciting week of fantasy football in the books. We saw Lamar Jackson (QB Ravens) add to his highlight reel in a marquee matchup against Patrick Mahomes (QB Chiefs). A ton of other top players racked up big numbers too such as Derrick Henry (RB Titans), Travis Kelce (TE Chiefs), Aaron Jones (Packers RB), and Tyler Locker (WR Seahawks).

Week 3 will be another unique mystery when it kicks off. Will Ezekiel Elliott (RB Cowboys) finally put up the numbers everyone expects or will Tony Pollard (RB Cowboys) take a good portion of his carries as the possible starter moving forward?

Fantasy owners are still waiting to see if Saquon Barkley (RB Giants) can return to the top form he once showed. This will be another big week in National Football League for fantasy football and it is only Week 3.

Ravens at Lions fantasy focus

The Detroit Lions find their record at 0-2 with two tough losses against two very tough teams. The schedule doesn’t get any easier here in Week 3 with the Baltimore Ravens coming to town. There are quite a few interesting matchups in this one when it comes to fantasy football.

The Lions will have to try to find a way to slow down Lamar Jackson (QB Ravens). He can run the football like no other quarterback in the game, and with Detroit having major injuries at cornerback he will be looking to hit big plays to his speedy wide receivers too.

Jared Goff (QB Lions) has been up and down this season, to say the least. At times he has played really well and at other points, turnovers have haunted him again. If the Lions want to win this game and please fantasy owners out there they need to feature their two best offensive players T.J. Hockenson (TE Lions) and D’Andre Swift (RB Lions).

This game could be big for those with the Ravens skills players and it also could be a bit of a slow, ugly game from both teams. Start most of the stars for the Ravens, but don’t be surprised in some Lions players have big fantasy days too in this game.

Bottom Line

After a couple of games in you are starting to know what your best starting lineup is for your fantasy team and you probably already have some injuries to manage too. Continue to start your stud players while also showing that you aren’t afraid to go pick up the hot hand off the waiver wire.

The next few weeks are crucial to pick up wins for your fantasy team and the Detroit Lions need to try to do the same. Neither wants to fall too far back in the standings early in the season.

Lions inactives for Week 2: Austin Bryant out, Julian Okwara active

The Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers released their inactive player lists for Week 2

When the Detroit Lions take to Lambeau Field in their white-on-white uniforms on Monday night, five players will not participate. The Lions released their list of inactive players for the Green Bay game.

Two of the inactives were known heading into the weekend when the Lions ruled out WR Tyrell Williams and DE Kevin Strong with their injuries. they are joined by healthy scratches CB Corey Ballentine, OLB Austin Bryant and RB Jermar Jefferson.

Ballentine was just claimed off waivers this week. Bryant being inactive means OLB Julian Okwara will be in the lineup, a reverse of the status in Week 1.

Green Bay’s inactive, from their website:

81 TE Josiah Deguara
54 LB La’Darius Hamilton
67 OL Jake Hanson
90 DL Jack Heflin
22 CB Shemar Jean-Charles
36 S Vernon Scott

Lions OC Anthony Lynn sorts out who replaces Tyrell Williams at WR for Week 2

Based on what Lynn said, it appears Trinity Benson will get his chances

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbx8sj47vkwrznr player_id=none image=https://lionswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

To say the Detroit Lions wide receiving corps entering Week 2 is an unknown is a huge understatement. With top veteran receiver Tyrell Williams out for Monday night’s game in Green Bay with a concussion, the unit becomes an even more anonymous group.

Williams’ loss pushes everyone up the depth chart. That’s the easy part. It’s much more difficult to ascertain the WR depth chart with all the changes and inexperience.

Lions offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn was asked about the receivers in his weekly press conference. He cited an interesting name in the group first: newcomer Trinity Benson.

The Lions traded two Day 3 picks in the 2022 NFL draft to Denver for Benson and a return Day 3 pick in 2023 before final roster cutdowns. The speedy Benson caught three passes for 19 yards on six targets from Jared Goff in the Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Now he could be the featured performer on Monday Night Football.

“(Trinity) Benson is getting better every practice. We threw him out there last week. I think he had been here for three days, and he did a good job for the length of time that he’s been here, but he’s gotten better. So, he will play more,” Lynn told reporters.

As for the rest of the receiving corps, Lynn also mentioned rookie Amon-Ra St. Brown. With presumptive starter Kalif Raymond questionable after suffering a late-week injury in practice, expect to see Tom Kennedy too.

“(Benson) will see more reps and (Amon-Ra St. Brown) Saint’s reps will go up this week. We’ll see what happens. (Tom) Kennedy, I believe he’s going to play this week, Lynn said.

The Lions offense is looking for someone, anyone to step up and fill Williams’ void.

“We’re definitely going to need some guys to step up because Tyrell, that’s going to be hard to replace,” Lynn stated. “He was a starter in this league and a veteran at that. That’s hard to replace at this point with a young group, but guys have got to step up and start making a name for themselves at some point, might as well start this week.”

Lions injury update: Tyrell Williams, Kevin Strong ruled out in Week 2

Both Williams and Strong will miss Monday night’s game due to concussions

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell delivered some unfortunate, but not unexpected, news prior to Saturday’s practice in Allen Park. Starting wide receiver Tyrell Williams and reserve defensive end Kevin Strong will miss the Week 2 trip to Green Bay due to their concussions.

The status of Williams was the first question asked of Campbell in his presser, and he didn’t dodge the inquiry,

“I’d say he’s out. Tyrell is out and so is (Kevin) Strong.”

It’s a blow for the Lions offense, which sorely lacks experience behind Williams. He was injured on an illegal hit in Week 1 after catching two passes for 14 yards.

Strong played well against the 49ers, especially against the run. He figures to be replaced in the rotation by rookie DE Levi Onwuzurike, who was inactive in Week 1 with a hip injury. Onwuzurike was a full participant in practices all week and should be good to go on Monday night.
