Lions lost free agent review: Should Detroit have released Rick Wagner?

Continuing with the review of the Detroit Lions lost free agents, we tackle Rick Wagner and if Detroit made the right call in releasing him

With the season behind us, we can now measure the performance of each of the players the Lions lost last year and the players they brought in to replace them. We would look at if the Lions were in the right or the wrong end of the free-agent class last year. If you missed it, here are the ones we have hit on so far: Graham GlasgowDevon Kennard, A’Shawn Robinson. This time we’ll be highlighting the loss of Rick Wagner.

Detroit signed Rick Wagner in 2017 to replace Riley Rieff, who was pushed from left tackle to right tackle after the Lions drafted Taylor Decker in 2016. Along with the signing of T.J. Lang, former general manager Bob Quinn splurged in free agency trying to create an offensive line that would protect their most valuable asset and turn the corner in elevating the run game.

After making Wagner the highest-paid right tackle at the time, Detroit saw early benefits from their prized free-agent acquisition, but that was short-lived. In 2017-2018, he wasn’t playing at the level you would expect a player to play considering the amount of money the Lions shelled out for him. In 2019, things turned for the worse for Wagner, where he was battling injuries throughout the season and was not the same player.

Overall, Wagner missed eight games in three years with Detroit through various injuries, in which his durability started to come into question. Also, Detroit had been grooming Tyrell Crosby since 2018 to take over the right tackle possibly. When Crosby made appearances, his play was nearly identical to that of Wagner. With his injury history and possible replacement in place, Wagner’s roster spot was anything but safe.

Many fans and analysts were calling for Wagner’s release in 2020 because either they felt Crosby was ready or Wagner was not worth the cap hit. Even though up until 2019, the Lions got decent play from the veteran, the Lions could not ill-afford, creating a self-inflicted hole in the roster when it was already riddled with them.

With the possibility of losing Graham Glasgow, the Lions needed to keep as much of the offensive line intact as possible. Also, the resources needed to replace Wagner will equal that of what he would cost the team, and with almost zero cap relief in the process, it would’ve just made sense to keep him. But Detroit decided to cut ties with Wagner and now was on the prowl for a new right tackle.

Wagner quickly found a home with the Green Bay Packers when they signed him to a two-year deal worth $11 million. Compared to what he got in Detroit, this was pennies on the dollar for Green Bay, and it was well worth the spending. Wagner only allowed 16 total pressures with only one sack surrendered and finished in the top 25 of offensive tackles according to PFF, playing in almost 65% of the offensive snaps.

In every game, Wagner appeared in eleven of them, which led the way to Packers grabbing the No. 1 scoring offense in the NFL.  Even though the Packers released Wagner only after one year to clear $4.25 million in much-needed cap space, the Packers could get solid play from Wagner and was a key cog in reaching Conference Championship and should not have issues finding a team looking for a veteran right tackle.

With a glaring hole on the right side, the Lions turned to free agency to fill in the void inking Halapoulivaati Vaitai to a five-year, $45 million deal. Being known as more of a run blocker than a pass blocker, you could tell the tides’ change with a stronger focus in the run game. Even though Vaitai was not as polished as Wagner in pass protection, Detroit was willing to overlook those flaws in hopes of beefing up the run game.

Almost immediately, the deal became heavily scrutinized due to Vaitai’s lack of starting experience and consistency. Through his first four seasons, he only started 20 games for the Philadelphia Eagles, but the way Detroit paid him, they were banking on him not to elevate his play but to be their right tackle for the foreseeable future.

Right off the bat, the Lions did not see what they had in the high paid free agent due to a foot injury that kept him out for the first two games of the season, which made Tyrell Crosby the next man up to fill in at right tackle and from the looks of it played at a decent level.

But when Vaitai returned from injury, the Lions elected to keep Crosby at right tackle and instead slotted Vaitai at right guard (switching Jonah Jackson to left guard) in hopes of mitigating his foot injury as best as possible. Unfortunately, Vaitai was never able to recover properly, landing on injured reserve in Week 12.

In his stead, Detroit started Oday Aboushi at right guard and surprisingly played well, considering his play in 2019 was very subpar, only allowing eleven total pressures and one sack in 2020.

Vaitai returned from injured reserve in Week 15, but Crosby ended up sidelined for the rest of the season with an ankle injury giving Vaitai the reigns at right tackle. It became apparent either Vaitai was not ready to return or was in way over his head, but it was very easy to notice the play’s level dropped significantly.

At the end of the season, Vaitai gave up six sacks which were second-most amongst guards in the NFL. On the flip side, Crosby surrendered five sacks for the year. Surely not what the Lions were hoping for in these players.

Due to Vaitai’s contract, he will be part of the Lions in 2021, either be at guard or tackle, due to the $14.6 million dead cap hit the Lions would take if he was cut, which leaves the possibility of a restructure in the future. Also, offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn identified tackle as a position that may need some depth; it feels like Vaitai may end up in the interior.

At the end of the day, the Lions traded out Wagner for Vaitai/Crosby. Wagner was not playing to the level the Lions were paying him at the time, which is understandable. Still, it created a self-made hole the Lions needed to spend resources on when they needed to focus their attention on other problematic areas, especially defense.

With the signing of Vaitai, it was apparent the running game was going to be the main offensive focus, and it looked good on paper, but his injuries were ultimately his downfall, and he could not recover. It was good to see Crosby finally get his shot and not relinquish it, at least until he got injured.

It might be too early to tell how these will look in the future, but at first glance, it can be classified as a questionable move by the previous regime that could turn into a potential problem for the current regime down the road.

Detroit Lions Week 17 inactives: Matthew Stafford and Frank Ragnow ACTIVE

The Detroit Lions have declared their game-day inactives for their Week 17 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Detroit Lions have declared their game-day inactives for their Week 17 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings.

After elevating C Evan Brown and DT Albert Huggins from the practice squad this week, the Lions’ roster has increased to 55-players. On a traditional week, the Lions would need to reduce that roster down to 46-players, but because they kept eight offensive linemen on their active game-day roster, they are now eligible to expand their roster to 48-players, meaning they need to declare seven of their 55-players inactive.

Here are those seven players.

Lions inactives list

  • WR Kenny Golladay (hip) — Ruled OUT
  • RT Tyrell Crosby (ankle) — Ruled OUT
  • IOL Joe Dahl (back) — Ruled OUT
  • LB Jamie Collins (neck)
  • OG Logan Stenberg
  • DT Albert Huggins
  • S Bobby Price

Golladay being ruled out means the Lions will once again start Marvin Jones, Danny Amendola, and Mohamad Sanu. Expect Quintez Cephus to get plenty of playing time, as he is the only receiver on the current active roster signed beyond this season.

Despite Crosby, Dahl, and Stenberg being ruled out, the Lions still have a starting offensive line they feel comfortable with — but if anyone gets injured, things get messy real quick.

Collins gave it a go on Friday and tried to get himself ready for today, but he was not healthy enough to play. Jahlani Tavai will replace him as the starting MIKE, and last week, it was Jarrad Davis stepping up as the second linebacker.

Huggins was elevated as insurance, but with Danny Shelton active, Huggins was not needed.

Price was signed to the active roster yesterday, and with him being inactive today, it’s a sign they wanted to get him under contract for future purposes.

Detroit Lions Week 17 injury declarations: Matthew Stafford, Frank Ragnow questionable

Examining the Detroit Lions injury declarations for their Wek 17 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings.

The Detroit Lions (5-10) have announced their injury declarations for their Week 17 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings (6-9) and while the Lions have ruled out three players, Matthew Stafford and Frank Ragnow appear likely to play.

Here’s a look at the Lions’ latest injury report, with the updated changes listed in bold.

Joe Dahl Back No Practice No Practice No Practice

After yesterday’s press conference it was clear Golladay’s season was over, and now with Crosby and Dahl also ruled out, their season comes to a close as well.

Hal Vaitai will continue to start at right tackle in place of Crosby, and Dahl’s absence will leave a vacancy at center behind Frank Ragnow. Expect practice squad center Evan Brown to either be signed or elevated on Saturday as insurance at the position.

“Well there was no setback,” Interim coach Darrell Bevell said of Stafford in his pre-practice presser. “He’s still improving. I mean, he’s sore, he has some issues going on, but he was out there. He didn’t do a ton, but he was limited in practice. So, see how he goes today and what it feels like tomorrow.”

While he’s not out of the woods yet, it’d be a shock if Stafford missed this game.

Ragnow talked with the media today — talked (!) — which is usually a precursor to him returning to game action. He was in good spirits and appears ready to play on Sunday.

Collins practiced for the first time in two weeks today, and while that is a good sign for his availability, things could still go either way at this point. This could come down to a game-time decision.

Sadly, Golladay’s season appears to be over.

Amendola seems more likely to play with a non-injury, but without knowing why he is missing games, his status is unknown at this time.

Crosby being downgraded is not a good sign, but with Hal Vaitai and Oday Aboushi healthy, the Lions can still play capable players on the rights side of the offensive line.

Dahl and Collins missing another practice is not ideal for their chances of playing this week. They’ll have one more day to heal up, or their season could end on Friday as well.

Limited practice

“Matthew (Stafford) – you’re going to have to convince me a lot that this guy is not going to go,” Interim coach Darrell Bevell said. “He’s as tough as they come, tough as nails. He wants to be out there. I think, really, those two things are probably the most important. If the guy wants to – I always say this, I always say that your mind is a powerful thing. You can do a lot if you just believe in that. The guy wants it. There’s not a doubt in my mind that he won’t make it happen, but obviously, we’re going to continue to go through the week and see how it goes.”

Getting Ragnow back is a great first step towards getting the Lions anticipated starting offensive line on the field. They have not played together since Week 11 and the last time the starting unit played an entire game together was Week 7 against the Falcons — two and half months ago.

Detroit Lions Week 17 injury report: Matthew Stafford misses practice on Wednesday

Examining the Detroit Lions injury report as they prepare to take on the Minnesota Vikings on Week 17 of the 2020 season.

The Detroit Lions (5-10) and their Week 17 opponent, the Minnesota Vikings (6-9), have both officially been eliminated from the 2020 playoffs, but pride is still on the line in the 2020 season finale.

Here’s a look at the Lions’ Wednesday injury report, with the updated changes from last week’s injury status listed in bold.

Injured reserve

No Practice

Player Injury Wednesday Thursday Friday
Matthew Stafford Right thumb, ribs, ankle No Practice
Kenny Golladay Hip No Practice
Joe Dahl Back No Practice
Jamie Collins Neck No Practice

“With Matthew (Stafford),” interim coach Darrell Bevell said at his Wednesday press conference, “I think the best thing for him is that he’s got the best feel and read for his body. So, we’ll continue to progress like we normally do with him. Some of the other injuries are resolving, so we’ll see how this injury on his ankle resolves as well by the end of the week.”

Golladay continues to work to get back, but he’s still unable to practice. The questions surrounding Golladay heading to injured reserve are being asked more frequently, with no real solid answers to be found.

Dahl exited last week’s game at halftime and not being able to practice today is not an encouraging sign for his availability this weekend. He had started the last two weeks at center, but Frank Ragnow sounds like he is trending in the right direction, which would put Dahl back in a reserve role if he is able to play.

Collins missed all of last week’s practices and was given a questionable designation, but was unable to play and was deemed inactive. Another missed practice is not ideal, but if the Lions thought he may have a chance to play last week, there’s a chance he’s in the same boat again.

Limited practice

Player Injury Wednesday Thursday Friday
Frank Ragnow Throat Limited Practice
Tyrell Crosby Ankle Limited Practice

“Yes, he is speaking,” Bevell said of Ragnow. “Really, what I’m asking him to do is, I don’t want him to overextend it or anything during the week. So, the communication will be minimal. I mean he’s talking and all that, but I don’t want him barking out any calls or signals that way, just so that we can continue to let it heal as much as it can all the way to Sunday. I think that’s kind of the prudent thing to do. He’s on board with that.”

Crosby returns to practice for the first time in three weeks and if he is able to get himself ready for the finale, he should jump right back into his starting role at right tackle. If that happens, it will be interesting to see if coaches push prized free agent Hal Vaitai in at right guard, or stick with Oday Aboushi, who has quietly been very steady — and quite frankly, playing better than Vaitai.

Minnesota starting running back Dalvin Cook will miss this weekend’s game as he is heading home to be with his family after the unexpected passing of his father James on Tuesday.

Detroit Lions Week 16 inactives: Frank Ragnow, Jamie Collins, Jayron Kearse OUT

The Detroit Lions have declared their game-day inactives for their Week 16 matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

  • C Frank Ragnow (throat)
  • LB Jamie Collins (neck)
  • SAF Jayron Kearse (hip)
  • OG Logan Stenberg
  • DT Frank Herron

With Golladay out, the Lions have turned to Mohamad Sanu as their starting WR-X position with rookie Quintez Cephus getting in the mix as well. Expect the same today.

With Crosby out, the Lions will turn to Hal Vaitai — who has cleared the league’s concussion protocol — at right tackle. No Ragnow, means the Lions will start Joe Dahl at center once again, with Evan Brown as his backup. With eight offensive linemen active, Stenberg was not needed.

The Lions starting offensive line will likely be:

Left tackle Left guard Center Right guard Right tackle
Taylor Decker Jonah Jackson Joe Dahl Oday Aboushi Hal Vaitai

Missing defensive starters Collins and Kearse will hurt, and they will likely be replaced by Jahlani Tavai and Tracy Walker respectively.

No Frank Herron means the Lions will roll with just three interior defensive linemen, meaning they will likely lean on EDGE rushers Romeo Okwara, Everson Griffen, Austin Bryant, and Julian Okwara more on the defensive line.

With only one game left in the season after this week, it’s possible one or both of them get placed on injured reserve so that the Lions could add depth to the 53-man roster.

Stafford is ahead of where he was last week at this time and he looks good to play this week. His availability will make new offensive play-caller Sean Ryan’s (QB coach) job a bit easier this week.

Ragnow was scheduled to see a specialist today, and while we have not received any word on the results of that exam, the fact that he was listed as limited could be a good sign.

With Crosby out, the Lions will be hoping Decker and Vaitai will be available to man the offensive tackle positions for this game. Decker getting back to a limited practice is encouraging, while Vaitai still needs to be medically cleared by an independent doctor — he has cleared the on-field concussion protocols.

Collins not practicing all week is concerning, but the questionable tag leaves the door open. This could very well be extra rest for a banged-up veteran on a short week.

Roberts getting in a nice week of practice is a good sign he could return to the starting lineup opposite Amani Oruwariye and Justin Coleman.

Kearse is a new addition to the injury report today which is cause for concern, as most late week injuries limit players on game day. If he is not ready to go, expect the Lions to turn back to Tracy Walker in the starting lineup.

Prater was back at practice today, and with no other placekicker on the roster, the tea leaves say he will most likely be ready to play.

Detroit Lions Week 16 injury report: Taylor Decker downgraded to no practice on Wednesday

Examining the Detroit Lions Wednesday injury report as they prepare to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 16.

The Detroit Lions (5-9) reported two positive COVID-19 results on Tuesday and closed their Allen Park training facility. The practice report for that day was an estimated report only. Today, the team announced that they had no new positive COVID-19 results and would hold an outdoor practice.

Unfortunately, several coaches had been identified as close contact exposures — including interim coach Darrell Bevell, defensive coordinator Cory Undlin, and nearly the entire defensive coaching roster — and those identified have been isolated from the training facility, meeting only virtually with the team.

Bevell did say they still had enough coaches to cover all the position groups at practice, but until things play out a bit further, he did not feel comfortable disclosing the team’s plans for replacing coaches who do not clear COVID-19 protocols ahead of Saturday’s game.

Here’s a look at the Lions’ Wednesday injury report, with the updated changes from yesterday’s injury status listed in bold.

Kenny Golladay Hip No Practice No Practice
Frank Ragnow Throat No Practice No Practice
Taylor Decker Groin Limited Practice  No Practice

Golladay continues to miss practices, and with Everson Griffen and Danny Shelton returning to practices today, it’s fair to speculate that he could be a candidate to be placed on I.R. in order to make room for one of them to be added to the active roster later in the week.

Ragnow will see a specialist tomorrow, who will most likely determine if he can play on Saturday or not.

Decker being downgraded to no practice is awful news. With Ragnow and Crosby also vulnerable to miss this game, the Lions could be down three starters — not ideal.

Collins misses another practice and now it’s time to be concerned about his status this week. The Lions need his speed at the second level in order to stay competitive.

Prater went from not being listed to missing practice, which is typically not a good sign, but he may also just be getting a veteran rest day. Kicker is literally the only position on the roster where there is not a backup on the active roster or practice squad — but the fact that they have not added another kicker this week is a positive note for his status.

Limited practice

Darryl Roberts Hip Limited Practice Limited Practice

Stafford said his ribs are sore but not any worse than they were last week, and the fact that he is getting limited practices are both encouraging signs he will play on Saturday.

While Decker was downgraded, Vaitai was upgraded. He still needs a full practice tomorrow, then to be cleared by an independent doctor before he can clear the league’s concussion protocol. If he can, he has the potential to play right or left tackle, but if he doesn’t, this offensive line could be in big trouble.

Roberts getting in another limited practice is encouraging but he is not out of the woods yet.

It was unclear if Okwara was added to the active roster because the Lions ran out of time on his 21-day evaluation clock or because he was ready to return, but a full practice indicates the latter is the more likely option.

Ford being upgraded to full will be a massive help to the Lions depth at corner. If he can play, he is the fourth option at worst, with the potential to find himself starting again.

Detroit Lions Week 16 injury report: Estimated 4 OL limited or unable to practice on Tuesday

Examining the Detroit Lions Tuesday injury report as they prepare for a Saturday matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 16.

The Detroit Lions (5-9) have officially been eliminated from the 2020 playoffs, but they still have two games remaining on their schedule, both at home. First up is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-5) in a Week 16 matchup that was flexed to Saturday, December 26, at 1:00 p.m. EST

Because it’s a Saturday game, the practice schedule gets moved up a day, meaning the team will release practice reports on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday this week.

Unfortunately, the Lions reported two positive COVID-19 results this morning and needed to shut the facilities down, meaning today’s injury report was only an estimated guess from coaches.

Here’s a look at the Lions’ Tuesday injury report, with the updated changes from last week’s injury status listed in bold.

Injured reserve/COVID-19

No Practice

Player Injury Tuesday Wednesday Thursday
Kenny Golladay Hip No Practice
Frank Ragnow Throat No Practice
Tyrell Crosby Ankle No Practice
Hal Vaitai Concussion No Practice
Jamie Collins Neck No Practice

Golladay estimated to have been unable to practice again today. Conversations surrounding shutting him down should be happening behind the scenes.

Ragnow is still unable to talk much, per Bevell, but he has another appointment with a specialist on Thursday when the team will get an update on his health and “that will tell us all the information that we need to know – how well he’s healed, and if he’s healed well enough to go out there and perform.”

Crosby enters his fourth week in a row of being unable to practice. Last week, he was replaced by Vaitai at right tackle, who suffered a concussion, pushing Matt Nelson back into the starting lineup again. Recently signed Dan Skipper will continue to be an emergency option.

On a short week, and with practice not an option today, Vaitai may have trouble passing through the league’s concussion protocols. If the building is shut down tomorrow, and he is not able to get in a limited practice, he will not be available on Saturday.

Collins’ injury is a new one, and he didn’t noticeably miss time last Sunday, so it’s unclear the severity of this issue.

Limited practice

Player Injury Tuesday Wednesday Thursday
Matthew Stafford Rib/Right Thumb Limited Practice
Taylor Decker Groin Limited Practice
Mike Ford Foot Limited Practice
Darryl Roberts Hip Limited Practice

“He was sore, obviously coming out of the game,” interim coach Darrell Bevell said of Stafford. “He did take a couple hits in that game that we talked about yesterday. Again, he’s tough as they come. He’s tough as nails. So we’ll basically do the same plan. I think he may be a little bit better than he was last week, but again, we’ll just continue to take it day-to-day.”

Decker’s injury is new, and he did not miss a snap in last week’s game, so an expected limited practice is an encouraging sign he will be available on Saturday.

Ford injured his foot during the game but was able to return to action. This looks like early week rest for the Lions’ third option at corner.

The reason Ford is the third option at corner is that Roberts was unable to play this last game. If he is able to find his way back on the field this week, he could push Ford into a more comfortable fourth corner role in the secondary.

Detroit Lions Week 15 injury designations: Matthew Stafford headed towards a game time decision

The Detroit Lions (5-8) have declared their injury designations for their Week 15 matchup with the Tennessee Titans (9-4) and they will be without four starters, two on each side of the ball: WR Kenny Golladay, OL Tyrell Crosby, DL Da’Shawn Hand, and CB Darryl Roberts.

QB Matthew Stafford and C Frank Ragnow have not been ruled out at this time and both appear to be headed towards game-time decisions in Nashville.

Here’s a look at the Lions’ full injury report, with the updated changes in injury status listed in bold.

The conversations surrounding shutting Golladay down for the season are coming. “We’re really trying to get him back,” interim coach Darrell Bevell said. “He really wants to play, he wants to be in there. But that’s a conversation that — where we’re at in the season — that it might come to that (shutting him down).”

Expect Mohamad Sanu and rookie Quintez Cephus to continue to split Golladay’s snaps in Tennessee.

Crosby will likely be replaced in the starting lineup by Matt Nelson, who, along with left tackle Taylor Decker, are currently the only healthy offensive tackles on the active roster. Expect a roster move on Saturday, either removing Vaitai from IR or signing Dan Skipper to the active roster (as he is out of practice squad elevations) for depth.

It’s worth noting that the Lions do have an open spot on the active roster after placing Okudah on IR earlier this week.

Hand was back for one game, suffered a new injury, and is missing another game. This opens the door for Kevin Strong to take on a bigger role this Sunday.

Roberts being ruled out leaves the Lions with just three healthy corners on the active roster — Amani Oruwariye, Justin Coleman, and Mike Ford — with the fourth option being recently signed to the practice squad Tramaine Brock, who will likely be elevated on Saturday.

Despite Bevell suggesting Stafford would miss practice on Friday, it appears he got in some work, testing out his rib injury. Stafford will travel with the team to Nashville, but will he play?

“You guys have seen it,” Bevell said. “You guys have covered this team way longer than I have been here, and you know what he’s done and what he’s played through. So I’m not putting him past it.”

Ragnow missed practice again, this time to see a specialist regarding his throat injury, and his status for the game will be the determining factor, per Bevell: “The communication from him (the specialist) will be able to tell us, is it safe for him to play, is it totally clear, all those types of things are what we’re looking for.”

Both Stafford and Ragnow look they’re headed towards a game-time decision.

Penisini was limited all week but played a full game last week, and despite being listed as questionable, he seems in a good spot to play.
