The five top-rated Ohio State safety recruits since 2000

The five top-rated Ohio State safety recruits since 2000 #GoBucks

We have been diving into some of the more highly touted recruits in Ohio State history. We recently discussed the quarterbacks, running backswide receiverstight endsoffensive tacklesguardscenterdefensive ends, defensive tacklesinside linebackers, outside linebackers, and cornerbacks We wanted to look into the history of recruiting safeties.

Some exciting names are on this list. Even though 247Sports‘ recruiting rankings only go back to 2000, there are some memorable names. It is always fun to reflect on how some of these guys performed and whether they lived up to expectations.

This list only confirms the insane wealth of talent Ohio State has had at the safety position. Some of the guys that just missed the cut are Erick Smith, a prized recruit from Glenville, Dustin Fox, who started all four years, and Josh Proctor, who is coming back for his last season in 2023.

How transfers from Ohio State football performed in 2021

What are some of the transfers that left Ohio State doing now? #GoBucks

The transfer portal has caused each and every off-season to feel like free agency, especially with the ability to now transfer once. With the introduction of the new Name, Image, and Likeness rules, the transfer portal will only get wilder and wilder every year.

Gone are the days where we would only see one transfer like Nick Goings to Pittsburgh or Mike Furrey to Northern Iowa, but four or five guys will be the new normal. The number for this off-season has already hit five and it wouldn’t be shocking to see one or two more names enter after the spring game.

It may be an overall negative aspect of the landscape of college football, but it sure does provide interesting content. With this new normal, I wanted to check on the five transfers that entered the portal last off-season.

Here’s how things are going …

Tyreke Johnson is transferring to Nebraska

Former five-star talent Tyreke Johnson will transfer from Ohio State to Nebraska according to an announcement on Twitter.

Former Ohio State cornerback Tyreke Johnson is staying in the Big Ten and will transfer to Nebraska according to a tweet shared to his Twitter account.

The former five-star recruit out of Jacksonville was thought to be one of the next great defensive backs at OSU, but he never developed enough to settle into a consistent role with the Buckeye defense. He was in the mix to compete for a starting spot this season, but still had to contend with Cameron Brown, Sevyn Banks, Ryan Watts and the influx of talent on the way via recruiting.

Seeing the writing on the wall, Johnson announced his entry into the transfer portal in May. He now has a destination to try and further his career.

Now that the one-time transfer rules are in place, Johnson will not have to sit out a year and should be right in the thick of things to start at one of the corner spots opposite of returning defensive back Cam Taylor-Britt.

We wish nothing but the best of luck to Johnson, except for when Ohio State plays Nebraska. This season’s meeting between the programs is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 6, in Lincoln.

With Cameron Brown confirmed out for the season, Ohio State turns to development

Cameron Brown’s injury forces Ohio State to turn to its inexperienced depth at corner. Time for some accelerated development in Columbus.

Early in the fourth quarter against Penn State, one of Ohio State’s rotating corners, Cameron Brown, was carted off with a non-contact injury. The worst fears have been confirmed by Lettermen Row. Brown is now out for the season with an Achilles injury and the Buckeyes must find someone to replace him. Luckily, they have two players that can step in and provide some help. With Shaun Wade, Sevyn Banks, and Marcus Williamson already inked as the starting corners, and with Brown out, the depth has taken a hit.

An intriguing option to grab playing time is a third-year sophomore Tyreke Johnson. Johnson has the height to play outside but has played even less than Williamson. In fact, he received no playing time against Penn State. He now figures to get some time to rotate in and out against bigger receivers and will most likely be next in line should anything happen to Wade, Banks, or Williamson.

The coaching staff talked up Johnson all offseason and seem to think he is ready to make a leap. Getting him some playing time will help when Wade moves to the NFL next season. The good news here is that — though inexperienced — the Buckeyes do have some depth behind Johnson.

As far as that goes, former high school quarterback Cameron Martinez and safety/corner recruit Lejond Cavazos may also figure in. Both are expected to be answers for the future of the program, but they may be needed for depth now. Former Oklahoma commit Ryan Watts could also factor in should duty call. Still though, for a position group that was already green, having to go deeper into that well isn’t the most ideal situation.

There’s no way around it. Brown going down hurts, but there’s still talent in the program, it might just need some accelerated development to add depth to an already thin and inexperienced position group.
