The five top-rated Ohio State safety recruits since 2000

The five top-rated Ohio State safety recruits since 2000 #GoBucks

We have been diving into some of the more highly touted recruits in Ohio State history. We recently discussed the quarterbacks, running backswide receiverstight endsoffensive tacklesguardscenterdefensive ends, defensive tacklesinside linebackers, outside linebackers, and cornerbacks We wanted to look into the history of recruiting safeties.

Some exciting names are on this list. Even though 247Sports‘ recruiting rankings only go back to 2000, there are some memorable names. It is always fun to reflect on how some of these guys performed and whether they lived up to expectations.

This list only confirms the insane wealth of talent Ohio State has had at the safety position. Some of the guys that just missed the cut are Erick Smith, a prized recruit from Glenville, Dustin Fox, who started all four years, and Josh Proctor, who is coming back for his last season in 2023.

All-American running back says playing for Eddie George “… ain’t fun”

Ohio State legend Eddie George holds players to his same high standard of play… especially his running backs.

Eddie George is one of the most decorated running backs in Ohio State football history. He became a legend in Columbus after winning the Heisman trophy in 1995. George has had success at all levels of football including a nine-year run in the NFL, and now he’s making the transition to the sidelines as the head coach of Tennessee State University.

As the former Buckeye heads into year two with the TSU Tigers looking to improve on 5-6 season and a fourth-place finish in the Ohio Valley Conference, George and his All-American running back, Devon Starling, sat down for questions at media day.

The question was asked, “How much fun is it to be coached by one of the greatest running backs of all time?” Starling’s response while chuckling… “It ain’t fun.” With everyone in the room starting to laugh, Starling was asked to expound on his statement, with Coach George sitting right next to him.

George’s prize pupil went on to explain that because his college coach excelled at such a high level, the expectations for all of his running backs are also high. He coaches them to do the little things well and that all the running backs in the room, whether All-American status or walk-on, are treated exactly the same.

Listen to Starling’s admiration for his head coach in his own words below.

Obviously, with the success that Eddie has had in his playing days, he knows what it takes to be great. And clearly, he wants his players to be great as well and is going to coach them and hold them to the exact same expectations he had of himself. Judging from his personal track record, his players would be wise to lock in on everything their head coach is teaching.

Tennessee State is picked to finish fourth in the Ohio Valley Conference for the second year in a row. However, if George and his star running back have anything to say about it, the Tigers could shock a few people along the way.

Mississippi State vs Tennessee State Game Preview

Why Tennessee State Will Win

Head coach Eddie Georgi’s team has a secondary.

It has massive problems with penalties, it doesn’t put enough points on the board, and the defense doesn’t come up with enough big plays, but the secondary allows just 179 yards per game and keeps offenses to just 50% completion rate.

Obviously you know what you’re getting with Mississippi State.

It’s not going to run – it’ll do that at a bare minimum – and it’s going to try controlling the clock with its midrange passing attack. Tennessee State has the secondary to keep from getting torched deep, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Mississippi State Will Win

Mississippi State should be able to keep moving the chains – the Tennessee State defense is strong, but it’s not great on third downs – and it’s not going to take too many points to get this done.

Tennessee State doesn’t have enough of a running game to matter, the Bulldog passing game is on a roll – it was brilliant in the comeback win over Auburn – and 24 points should be enough to win.

Tennessee State scored more than 30 just once.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

A fast start is everything.

Mississippi State struggled to get going against Auburn and it had to scramble to get back into it. This week, the faster it can put this away, the faster it can start preparing for Ole Miss on Thursday.

Tennessee State, though, will be pesky enough to keep this from getting out of hand. Mississippi State isn’t going to be in any danger, but it won’t be as smooth as it might like.

Why Jacksonville State Will Win

The Gamecocks have the talent to hit the ground running.

It’s an experienced bunch with the star power and running game to take over and go on a great run. It all started with a 27-10 win over Tennessee Tech thanks to 274 yards on the ground and a D that held on in the second half.

The Tennessee State defensive front was gouged in the 27-20 loss to Austin Peay, giving up long run after long run to Brian Snead, who took off fo 227 yard sand three scores. Jacksonville State has the ground game to keep on pushing. However …

Why Tennessee State Will Win

As bad as the Tennessee State defense was, the team was still in the game after a good late run. The Titans got down 20-0, but former Marshall QB Isaiah Green was solid, the D tightened up, and the team got back in it.

Jacksonville State was helped by five takeaways in the win over Tennessee Tech, but it also turned it over three times. As long as Tennessee State doesn’t start making a slew of mistakes, the passing game should be good enough to stay in this.

FCS Football Schedule & Predictions: Week 3

What’s Going To Happen

Neither team was particularly sharp in the respective openers, but Jacksonville State has the talent and skill level to be far better far faster.

The Tennessee State defensive front still has to prove it can hold down a running game.

Tennessee State (0-0) vs Austin Peay (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Tennessee State Will Win

The Tigers were able to move the chains just fine back in 2019 with a strong passing attack that should be dangerous again.

The offensive line has the experience and the upside to be a factor, and the D has a strong-looking secondary to deal with an Austin Peay passing game that wasn’t bad in the 27-21 loss to Tennessee Tech, but had a few mistakes and stalled late.

The Governors turned it over four times and committed 13 penalties in the loss – Tennessee State could use the help and the mistakes.

Why Austin Peay Will Win

Austin Peay played like a team in the opener of a February spring season.

It wasn’t great offensively, but the defense held Tennessee Tech to 156 yards as it stuffed everything on the ground and was just fine against a middling passing attack. The problems were on offense with four turnovers, but the attack was balanced, the passing game worked, and if there just weren’t the big mistakes and giveaways, they had it.

What’s Going To Happen

Expect the Governors to fix the glitch.

After getting the mistakes and problems from that fourth quarter meltdown out of the way, they’ll be a whole lot tighter, they’ll do a better job of controlling the clock, and they’ll come up with a win over a Tennessee State team that’s going to score, but won’t be able to come up with the win like it did back in 2019.
