Georgia receiver announces transfer commitment

Georgia receiver Tyler Williams will provide an immediate boost for a Big Ten program coming off of a lackluster offensive season

After entering the transfer portal a week ago, a one-time highly touted recruit for the Georgia Bulldogs has found his new home. Wide receiver Tyler Williams announced on his X page that he has committed to the Minnesota Golden Gophers and head coach P.J. Fleck.

Williams was a four-star receiver and top 100 overall recruit in the class of 2023. He is originally from Lakeland, Florida. He is listed at 6 feet, 3 inches and 205 pounds. In his one season in Athens, he recorded one catch for four yards. After improvements to Georgia’s receiver room that included three incoming transfers, Williams decided to leave the program.

Williams will provide an immediate boost for a Golden Gopher offense that was lackluster a year ago. He will join 2023 leading receiver Daniel Jackson in catching passes from new quarterback Max Brosmer, who is a transfer from New Hampshire, that is replacing outgoing starter Athan Kaliakmanis.

Sooners latest to offer three-star 2025 prospect Tyler Williams

Oklahoma is the latest to offer three-star wide reciever Tyler Williams of Sumner High School.

The Oklahoma Sooners coaching staff continues to travel the country, stopping at high schools all over to evaluate and offer prospects for the 2025 and 2026 classes. On Wednesday morning, their most recent offer went out to three-star prospect Tyler Williams of Sumner High in Riverview, Florida.

Williams is a two-way star for his high school team, playing offense at wide receiver and free safety for his team’s defense. It’s not particularly clear if the Sooners are recruiting him for wide receiver like most schools offering Williams, though recruiting services seem to think his college position is wide receiver.

At wideout, Williams is an excellent prospect. He has solid size at 6-foot-1 and is just a shade under 200 pounds. He’s a three-sport athlete, so athleticism is not lacking either.

On the hardwood, he averaged 8.4 PPG and 4.3 RPG a game. He also runs track, where he was a regional qualifier in the high jump, posting a personal-best 6-1.5 effort in the event.

On tape, he is a do-it-all wide receiver. He had a highlight reel block, won on a seam route from the slot, repeatedly won outside the numbers, and was able to high-point the ball at his apex. He scored on a couple of screens as well, and for good measure, he returned a punt and kick for a touchdown.

Florida hosts 2025 wide receiver on campus for junior day

Florida got three-star wide receiver Tyler Williams on campus recently, and it has the Gators near the top of his recruitment.

Sumner High wide receiver [autotag]Tyler Williams[/autotag] was one of the many recruits in town last weekend for Florida’s most recent junior day, and he left Gainesville with the Gators near the top of his recruitment, according to Swamp247.

Florida will have to contend with teams such as Georgia, Miami, Oregon and Wake Forest for his services. Williams says he’s looking for a program with a good team culture, which is what Billy Napier has prioritized over the past two years.

Wide receivers coach Billy Gonzalez is taking the lead on this recruitment. The two are in the middle of developing a relationship, and Williams could return for a game in the fall to reunite with the Florida staff.

“The Gators are pretty high on my list,” Williams said. “… My family loved it, they felt at home and welcome.”

Williams a three-star recruit everywhere but ESPN where he is ungraded. The On3 industry ranking has him at No. 494 overall in the class of 2025 and No. 76 among wide receivers in the class.

Georgia WR Arian Smith describes UGA freshmen wideouts

Smith breaks down freshman WRs Yazeed Haynes, Tyler Williams and Anthony Evans…

Georgia signed three four-star receivers in its No. 2 ranked 2023 recruiting class in Yazeed Haynes, Tyler Williams and Anthony Evans.

Bulldogs wide receiver Arian Smith spoke about each of the new wideouts in a post-practice press conference on Tuesday.

“He’s [Yazeed Haynes] just quick. He’s just a natural receiver — like, he don’t have to get taught to, like, run routes. It’s just [about] him learning the plays. Once he learns the plays and learns the offense, he’s going to be good”

Haynes, out of Fort Washington, Pa., was rated as the No. 27 wideout, according to rankings by 247Sports.

Smith continued with a comparison to a former NFL receiver when speaking of Evans.

“He’s [Anthony Evans] fast. He’s going to be good, too,” Smith said. “He reminds me a lot like Percy Harvin with the way he runs. It’s like effortless.”

Evans, out of Converse, Texas, was rated as the No. 29 receiver in the 2023 class.

Lastly, Smith described Williams, who was the highest-rated receiver signed coming it at No. 17. Smith and Williams both attended Lakeland High School in Florida

“[He’s] strong. Strong hands. You know, the early [enrollee] guys have got to learn the offense. They’ve got to take the time to learn first.”

We will get a good look at how the young wideouts are progressing when the Dawgs take the field at the annual ‘G-Day’ spring game in Sanford Stadium on April 15.

4-star WR Tyler Williams signs with Georgia

Tyler Williams is a Dawg.

Four-star wide receiver Tyler Williams committed to Georgia in September, choosing UGA over ClemsonTexas A&M, Miami and South Carolina.

On Wednesday, the 6-foot-3 receiver out of Lakeland, Florida officially signed his national letter of intent to play for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Williams ranks as the nation’s No. 105 overall player and No. 15 ranked receiver.

247Sports describes him as a “potential big-play machine”:

A potential big-play machine out on the perimeter. Pretty green from a technical standpoint, which makes sense seeing as how he was deployed mostly as a quarterback early on in prep career. Still, has plenty of upside as a wide receiver given fluid movements patterns and ability to make contested catches. Size is unverified, but appears to be over 6-foot-2 and pushing 205 pounds after adding 15 pounds or so to what was once a thin, wiry frame. Thick through the glutes and has room to add even more mass in the upper half. Was initially viewed as a legitimate D1 basketball prospect given how he can consistently drive and finish at the rim.

Friday Night Notes: Alabama adds 2 more blue chips, Georgia flips a 4-star WR and more

The latest football recruiting news from around the country.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond.

The rich tend to get richer. That’s the case in the broader economy and in the world of recruiting, where Alabama is crushing the competition. Already leading this year’s recruiting race, this week they added two more four-star prospects, one from this cycle and one for the next.

On Thursday, MCHS (Ala.) four-star Edge Sterling Dixon (class of 2024) announced his commitment to Alabama in a creative way. He shared a video on Twitter recreating an iconic scene from Friday with his friends.

Dixon (6-foot-3, 211 pounds) was an extremely popular recruit, earning offers from 30 different schools, including several SEC rivals. He’s ranked No. 16 at his position and No. 13 in the state.

Earlier this week, Nick Saban and company also got the commitment of four-star wide receiver Jaren Hamilton. Ranked No. 31 at his position and No. 50 overall in the state of Florida, Hamilton (6-foot-1, 188 pounds) adds another potential pro receiver to what has become an NFL factory in recent years.

Alabama still ranks first in the 2023 race, and thanks to Dixon, they’re No. 4 in the 2024 recruiting cycle, trailing only LSU, Notre Dame and Georgia.

Friday Night Notes: Georgia passes Texas, Cormani McClain countdown and more

Latest football recruiting news from the high school and NCAA lens.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school football recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond.

Georgia won the national championship last season on the strength of their defense, and that unit has continued to dominate the competition this year. Heading into Week 5, the Bulldogs are 4-0 and their opponents have averaged just eight points per game. However, while they hang their hats on defense, that doesn’t mean they’re neglecting the other side of the ball.

This week Georgia nabbed one of the top wide receivers in the class of 2023 and moved up in the recruiting rankings…

Andrew Ivins, 247Sports

On Tuesday night Lakeland (Fla.) wide receiver Tyler Williams announced his decision to play for Georgia.

He had offers from 43 other programs, including Clemson, South Carolina, Texas A&M and Alabama.

Williams (6-foot-3, 200 pounds) has a four-star rating and is ranked No. 20 at his position in his recruiting class, according to 247Sports. He has drawn comparisons to former 49ers first-round draft pick Michael Crabtree.

That makes three wide receivers who have committed to Georgia and 20 players overall. Thanks to this addition, the Bulldogs have pushed up past Texas and now their 2023 recruiting class ranks No. 2 in the country behind Alabama.

The Clemson Insider has decided to take a relatively old concept and put a new spin on it. As we already introduced on our message board, TCI will field weekly recruiting mailbag questions, which will be answered in an article format. We’ll choose questions to answer and provide you with the most relevant information regarding Clemson recruiting.

Without further ado, we took a crack at answering some of your mailbag questions. It should be noted that the questions have been edited for clarity.

Q: Have we moved on from (Monroe) Freeling? Has he moved on from Clemson?

Clemson is no longer at the forefront of Monroe Freeling’s recruitment. For a while, the Tigers seemed to be the perceived favorite to land the Oceanside Collegiate Academy product, but as we know, things are fluid in recruiting.

To no fault of his own, Freeling was unable to make Clemson’s official visit weekend. It was his parents’ anniversary the weekend of June 3 and it unfortunately just didn’t work out with his schedule. That paved the way for the trio of Vandegrift (Texas) four-star Ian Reed, Permian (Texas) four-star Harris Sewell and Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy (Georgia) four-star Zechariah Owens to verbally pledge to Dabo Swinney’s program in the coming weeks.

While Clemson is set with taking three offensive linemen in the class of 2023, there’s been chatter that Thomas Austin could possibly take a fourth commit. Whether that would be Freeling hinges on a couple of things, but as of August, the likelihood that he’ll end up at Clemson has grown increasingly unlikely.

We know Clemson really likes the prospect, as Swinney and Co. have attended his basketball games and such, but that arrow that was once pointed at Clemson and since trended in another direction.

Freeling has made official visits to Notre Dame, Miami and Florida. Whether Freeling takes those remaining two officials remains to be seen, but the teams most heavily involved appear to be the latter programs mentioned, as well as Alabama and Georgia.

Q: Any traction with any RB?

It goes without saying, that Clemson continues to evaluate its options at the running back position.

A name that I’ve heard in some circles is Heights High (Kansas) four-star John Randle II. While he’s ranked as the No. 20 running back in the nation, per the 247Sports composite, you’re looking at a player whose recruitment is still waiting to take off.

I don’t know how much traction Clemson has with Randle if any, but he’s a name worth monitoring as he heads into his senior season.

Q: How many more do you think we’ll take before we shut it down?

This is always a fun question.

After Ronan Hanafin and Shelton Lewis committed last week, Clemson is now up to 20 total verbal commitments.

My best guess would be two or three more prospects, which would put Clemson’s class at either 22 or 23 commitments. Anything can happen between now and then, whether a player enters the transfer portal or decides to step away from the game like Landen Zanders did earlier this month.

As we know, these things tend to be fluid. That’s not to say that I expect a Clemson player to enter the transfer portal or anything of that nature. More so, we’d be naive to assume that the ever-changing landscape doesn’t affect roster turnover and the number of scholarship players that a program like Clemson has to work with at any given time.

Q: What are the biggest needs now?

Running back. Point blank.

While Clemson recently placed Domonique Thomas on scholarship, it’s worth noting that Keith Adams, Jr. is the last running back to commit to Clemson since Will Shipley did so on May 5, 2020. It’s a position that Clemson hasn’t had much success with on the recruiting trail as of late, just barely missing out on the likes of Trevor Etienne (Florida), Andrew Paul (Georgia) and Jeremiah Cobb (Auburn),

From what we’ve heard regarding CJ Spiller — he’s a good coach with the necessary recruiting chops. Clemson’s lack of movement at the position on the trail shouldn’t be an indictment of who he is as a coach. As we previously mentioned, Spiller did a nice job of identifying a guy like Paul, who was one of the best high school backs in the state of Texas.

Q: Any traction with Tomarrion Parker and a visit for the season?

Yes!

I answered this on our message board, but for our readers who didn’t get a chance to see this, Clemson has a lot of traction with Tomarrion Parker. The four-star defensive end out of Central (Alabama) is eyeing an official date of Oct. 22, which would be the weekend that Clemson plays host to Syracuse at Memorial Stadium.

There is mutual interest here, as Parker wants to take a long, extended look at Clemson, now that the Tigers have extended an offer.

More on Parker here:

Newly offered 4-star Alabama DE dishes on Clemson offer, talks official visit plans

Q: Are we done at WR with the Ronan (Hanafin) commitment or will we continue to push for Tyler Williams to sway him away from the Dawgs?

As of now, Clemson is only planning to take two wide receivers in the class of 2023 and some pretty good ones at that. With Sunday’s commitment, Buckingham & Browne (Massachusetts) four-star wide receiver Ronan Hanafin joined Rockwall (Texas) four-star Noble Johnson, as the two receivers that Clemson will be taking in this class.

Earlier this year, some prospects informed TCI that Clemson was looking to add up to three wide receivers in this class because it was likely going to be losing a number of wideouts after the 2022 season. It’s entirely possible that Clemson’s thinking has changed since the end of January.

That would make Clemson an unlikely suitor for Lakeland (Florida) four-star Tyler Williams, but my hunch is that has more to do with his recruitment trending in the direction of Georgia and less to do with numbers. Williams sent a commitment date of Sept. 27 and will pick between Clemson, Georgia, Texas A&M, South Carolina and Ole Miss.

Williams has one official visit remaining and with a month and change until he renders a college decision, the University of Miami is rumored to be pushing for him to take his final visit to Coral Gables.

Clemson hosted Williams during the program’s official visit weekend from June 3-5. From what we gathered, Williams mostly kept to himself during the weekend’s festivities. That’s not a knock on Williams, who has spoken very highly of Clemson in the interviews he’s done in the past, but rather an observation from a source that we wanted to pass along.

Many in the industry have Williams pegged as a Georgia guy, but that remains to be seen, as other programs continue to push for his commitment. I just wouldn’t expect him to land at Clemson at this time.

Q: Next possible verbal?

I’m not going to make any projections at the moment, but the next possible commitment in terms of announcement timing is North Gwinnett (Georgia) four-star defensive lineman Kayden McDonald. The expectation is that he’ll be taking an official visit to Clemson sometime this fall.
