Oklahoma tackle Tyler Guyton drafted No. 29 overall by the Dallas Cowboys

The Oklahoma Sooners have another first round offensive tackle to tout. Former Oklahoma Sooner Tyler Guyton is headed to the Dallas Cowboys to play with former Sooner turned Cowboy [autotag]CeeDee Lamb[/autotag].

Guyton was selected with  29th overall by the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Guyton has been on NFL radars since his excellent showing against fellow first-round draft pick Jared Verse in the Cheez-It Bowl.

The Cowboys lost two starters on their offensive line when left tackle Tyron Smith and center Tyler Biadasz signed with the New York Jets and Washington Commanders. With Smith headed to the Jets, the opportunity to select a high-upside left tackle prospect was too much for the Cowboys to pass up.

Guyton, who is 6-foot-7 and 322 pounds, excels in pass protection. He needs to work on his hand placement and consistency as a run blocker, but he’s the type of player that Dallas has successfully developed in recent years.

With his first-round selection, Guyton becomes the fourth offensive lineman since 2010 to be selected in the first round of the NFL draft, joining [autotag]Anton Harrison[/autotag] (2023), [autotag]Lane Johnson[/autotag] (2013), and [autotag]Trent Williams[/autotag] (2010).

What felt like the longest offseason in recent memory has finally reached the tipping point for the Dallas Cowboys. The NFL draft is always the crown jewel of the Cowboys’ acquisition plans, but even moreso in 2024 as the team refused to use mid-tier free agency to plug holes. Now, the team finally had a chance to do what they do best, draft amateur talent.

With the No. 24 courtesy of their 12-5 record and upset wild-card round loss, the Cowboys traded back, adding an extra third-round pick to their cache. They moved back to No. 29 in a swap with the Detroit Lions and with their new pick, they select Oklahoma offensive tackle Tyler Guyton.

Report: Commanders to be aggressive with potential move back into 1st round

Do the Commanders have a target in mind?

The Washington Commanders have two pressing needs going into the first round of the 2024 NFL draft: Quarterback and offensive tackle. Washington is expected to pick its quarterback at No. 2 overall.

The Commanders next go on the clock at No. 36 overall and also hold the Bears’ second-round pick at No. 40. Washington will likely target an offensive tackle with one of its second-round picks unless there is a trade back into the first round.

ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid called the Commanders moving back into the first round the “worst-kept secret” in the draft. NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah believes the Commanders will move back into the first round, even projecting a trade in his final mock draft, leading them to select Georgia OT Amarius Mims.

Ryan Fowler of Bleacher Report and The Draft Network had the following to say about the Commanders on Thursday:

Guyton is a 6-foot-8, 322-pound prospect who began his career at TCU before transferring to Oklahoma, where he spent the past two years. Guyton started five games in 2022, four at right tackle and one at left tackle. In 2023, he started nine games at right tackle.

Here is NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein’s scouting report on Guyton:

Ascending tackle prospect with the traits and tape to project a bright future as a high-level pass protector in the league. Guyton has battled injuries and had limited reps coming over from TCU after the 2021 season, but his flashes have been complemented by increasing consistency. He plays with a high center of gravity and needs to get stronger, but leveraged hand strikes can help overcome those concerns. He should continue to get better as a run blocker but might never shine in that department. Guyton’s value comes with his pass protection, as he has the length, feet and body control to become a human roadblock. He should become a talented starter at either tackle position.

Peter Schrager makes bold Rams prediction in new mock draft

Most mock drafts have the Rams going defense at No. 19, but Peter Schrager has a bold prediction for their top pick

It’s expected to be an offense-heavy first round of the draft this year, with quarterbacks, wide receivers and offensive tackles likely making up a good portion of the top 32 picks. Given the state of the Rams’ roster, signs point toward Los Angeles going defense at No. 19 overall – either by selecting a cornerback, edge rusher or defensive tackle.

Players such as Laiatu Latu, Byron Murphy II and Chop Robinson have been popular selections in mock drafts, but Peter Schrager of NFL.com is going in a different direction with his pick for the Rams. In his hew first-round projection, he has the Rams selecting Oklahoma offensive tackle Tyler Guyton.

Not only that, but he just about guaranteed the Rams will take an offensive player at No. 19 if they don’t trade down.

I’ll go on record with something of a guarantee here: If the Rams do not trade back, you better believe Sean McVay’s first-ever first-round selection will be an offensive player. Los Angeles shored up its interior O-line in free agency. Guyton — a bit of a project, but someone who can play either tackle spot — gives Matthew Stafford another promising young guy to protect him in his 16th NFL season.

It’s worth noting that Schrager and Sean McVay are good friends, so Schrager could be speaking with some inside info when he makes this prediction. If there’s one organization he’s closely tied to, it’s the Rams.

There’s no doubt the defense has more immediate needs than the offense right now, but offensive tackle is a position the Rams should address at some point. Rob Havenstein is getting older and only has two years left on his contract. Alaric Jackson will play the 2024 season on a second-year tender, but he’ll become a free agent in 2025.

It’s possible the Rams will be looking for two new starting tackles next offseason and they don’t exactly have any players who look like future starters behind Jackson and Havenstein. Drafting Guyton this year would give him a year to be the swing tackle before potentially stepping in at either left or right tackle in 2025.

The Rams always draft with an eye on the next few years, which we saw with the selections of Joe Noteboom and Brian Allen in 2019. The selection of Guyton would be similar to those picks, only much earlier in the draft, of course.

Tyler Guyton taken in the first round of Mel Kiper’s latest NFL Mock Draft

In his latest mock draft for ESPN, Mel Kiper projects Tyler Guyton to go in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Oklahoma Sooners have a great chance to go back-to-back with first-round offensive tackles. Anton Harrison was taken late in the first by the Jacksonville Jaguars last year and [autotag]Tyler Guyton[/autotag] could hear his name called on day one this year.

The Sooners’ offensive tackle has been projected at the end of the first round of NFL mock drafts quite regularly. As draft day approaches, Guyton continues to get first-round buzz, this time from ESPN’s NFL draft guru, Mel Kiper.

In his latest two-round mock draft for ESPN (ESPN+), Kiper sent Guyton to the Dallas Cowboys.

This has to be a tackle, right? Tyron Smith is gone, and Tyler Smith, a first-round pick in 2022, has played extremely well at left guard. Would Dallas move Tyler Smith outside and take the risk that he’s only an above-average left tackle? If I was the general manager, I’d take Guyton, one of the most physically impressive players in this class. At 6-foot-7, 322 pounds, he moves like a tight end. He played mostly right tackle in college, but he could make the move to Dak Prescott’s blind side for the Cowboys. – Kiper, ESPN

The Dallas Cowboys have multiple needs along the offensive line, including offensive tackle. They could also opt to draft a center early. But taking Guyton would make a lot of sense given his upward trajectory. He’s still very young for the position but has developed at a rapid pace due to his plus athleticism and footwork.

If the Cowboys were to draft him, he’d have a bit of a transition on his hands moving over to left tackle. But as we saw in his short time in Norman, he’s got the athleticism to make it a smooth transition.
