NFLSU: 3 former Tigers players gearing up for Super Bowl 58

Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Neil Farrell and Ty Davis-Price are all seeking Super Bowl rings on Sunday.

It’s almost time for Super Bowl 58 between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, and a trio of former LSU players are looking for world championship rings. One of them is seeking his second.

Running backs [autotag]Clyde Edwards-Helaire[/autotag] and [autotag]Ty Davis-Price[/autotag] and defensive tackle [autotag]Neil Farrell[/autotag] were all teammates on the Tigers’ 2019 national championship squads, and they’re could add another piece of hardware to the collection on Sunday night.

Edwards-Helaire and Farrell play for the Chiefs. The former won a Super Bowl with the team last season and has spent his first four seasons in Kansas City. He’s mostly been a rotational player this season, seeing 70 carries in three starts.

A fourth-round pick in 2022, Farrell spent his rookie season with the Raiders but was traded to Kansas City in August. He appeared in three games this season and made one postseason appearance, recording one tackle.

Davis-Price was a third-round pick for the 49ers in 2022. He was waived on Dec. 5 but signed to the team’s practice squad two days later, where he remains.

All time, 47 LSU Tigers have combined to win 57 Super Bowl rings, and that number is guaranteed to expand after this weekend.

PHOTOS: Recapping Ty Davis-Price’s preseason with the San Francisco 49ers

Davis-Price could provide key depth in the backfield as a rookie.

Running back is certainly a position of diminishing returns in the NFL these days, and the devaluing of rushers has led to teams generally looking later and later in the draft to address it.

Not every mid-round running back pick works out, but [autotag]Ty Davis-Price[/autotag] will hope to be one of the success stories. After leading LSU in rushing the last two seasons and eclipsing 1,000 yards in 2021 — largely thanks to a school-record 287 yards on the ground in the win over Florida — he was taken in the third round this spring by the San Francisco 49ers.

The ‘Niners are looking for running back depth. They return last year’s rookie phenom Elijah Mitchell, but they lost Raheem Mostert in free agency. Davis-Price saw quite a few opportunities in the preseason, taking 24 carries for 74 yards (3.1 average). He didn’t find the end zone, but he recorded five first-down carries with a long of 14 yards.

Davis-Price should see a good number of chances as a rookie. Here are the best pictures from his first taste of NFL action this preseason.

LSU running back John Emery Jr. suspended for two games, per report

Emery will miss the beginning of the 2022 season due to lingering issues, according to Brody Miller of The Athletic.

LSU will begin its 2022 campaign without its top running back.

According to a report from The Athletic’s Brody Miller, [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag] is expected to be suspended for the first two games of the season — contests against Florida State in New Orleans and Southern in the home opener. Per Miller, the suspension has to do with the academic issues that held him out last season.

The Athletic also reports that cornerback Raydarious Jones has been suspended for the entire 2022 season due to academic issues.

Emery is reportedly in the process of appealing the suspension, arguing that he has been meeting academic standards since coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] and his support staff took over in November. LSU expects to know more within the next week, per Miller.

He apparently attempted to appeal the suspension that kept him from playing last season, as well, on the grounds of a number of hardships he faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Emery dealt with the death of his grandmother and two separate COVID infections. His stepfather also suffered from COVID complications and was hospitalized on a ventilator, per Miller.

Emery is a former five-star recruit who was expected to play a major role in 2021 prior to his suspension. In 19 appearances from 2019-20, Emery took 114 carries for 566 yards and seven touchdowns.

With the departure of [autotag]Ty Davis-Price[/autotag] to the NFL, Emery was expected to return to the field this fall and take over the starting role. However, cryptic comments from Kelly a few days ago cast doubt on his availability in 2022.

“There’s obviously things that I can’t talk about,” Kelly said. “He’s in good standing in football. So everything that he’s done, he’s done a great job with us in football.

“Everything that he’s done for us has been outstanding in football. Anything else that arises would not be anything that I can comment on because of privacy rights, so I think you guys can put the rest together.”

With Emery unavailable in the first two contests, LSU will likely rely on Penn State transfer [autotag]Noah Cain[/autotag] and [autotag]Armoni Goodwin[/autotag], as well as a former walk-on in [autotag]Josh Williams[/autotag] who has worked his way up the depth chart.

Former LSU running back worth the Price of admission in 49ers preseason

Ty Davis-Price is making an immediate impact with San Francisco.

In three seasons as a running back for LSU, [autotag]Ty Davis-Price[/autotag] played in 35 games finishing with 1,744 yards on 379 carries (4.6 yards per carry) with 15 touchdowns.

Davis-Price was selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. He enters a very nice situation with a team that made it all the way to the NFC Championship game last season. Davis-Price was already assumed to get a lot of playing time as a rookie but plays like these only help cement that fact.

In this play, Davis-Price breaks a zone run to the outside and refuses to go down. He isn’t dealing with high school or SEC guys, he is stiff-arming and running over the best of the best in the NFL. He is running through the Minnesota Vikings as if he were playing Madden 23.

Davis-Price is just another guy on the long list of running backs that the Tigers have sent to the NFL, and he’ll hope to make an impact on one of the league’s most talented rosters.

San Francisco 49ers select Ty Davis-Price with pick No. 93 in 2022 NFL draft

Davis-Price was the fourth LSU player taken in the first three rounds of the draft.

With the 93rd pick of the 2022 NFL draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected [autotag]Ty Davis-Price[/autotag] to be their running back of the future. Davis-Price was one of the top running backs in the SEC as a junior in 2021.

He capped a three-year career with 1,744 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns and had his best season as a junior with 1,003 yards and 6 touchdowns. He appeared in 36 games with 16 starts with a career average of 4.6 yards per carry and he set the LSU single-game rushing record with 287 yards in a win over the Florida Gators.

From the Bayou to the Bay Area, the 49ers are getting a great running back in Tyrion Davis-Price. He’ll have to contend with a talented running back in Elijah Mitchell, but he will likely replace Raheem Mostert as the No. 2 back.

Former LSU running back Corey Kiner announces transfer portal destination

Kiner will return to his hometown to play for Cincinnati.

Well, that didn’t take long.

After less than one day in the transfer portal, former LSU running back Corey Kiner has found a new home — and it’s pretty close to his old one. He is heading back to his hometown to play for the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Kiner, who played at Roger Bacon High School in Cincinnati, will join Luke Fickell’s squad, which is coming off an appearance as the first-ever Group of Five team to make the College Football Playoff.

Kiner joins the Bearcats with three remaining years of eligibility. He announced his transfer decision via his Twitter account on Monday afternoon.

Kiner, a former four-star recruit, finished as LSU’s second-leading rusher with 324 yards on 79 carries in 2021. He could’ve been poised for a bigger role with [autotag]Ty Davis-Price[/autotag] moving on, but the Tigers also return [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag], who was academically ineligible for the 2021 season.

With Kiner gone, LSU will likely rely primarily on Emery in addition to sophomore [autotag]Armoni Goodwin[/autotag].

LSU running back enters the transfer portal

Corey Kiner was the Tigers’ second-leading rusher in 2021 as a true freshman.

After the initial rush of transfers following the conclusion of the regular season, a second wave usually follows during and after spring practice as the depth chart begins to take shape and some players find themselves on the outs.

The latest example of that for LSU came from running back [autotag]Corey Kiner[/autotag], who announced on Monday morning that he will be entering the transfer portal.

“My time as a tiger has come to an end, I would like to start a new chapter in my life and explore my options to continue my career as a student-athelte elsewhere,” Kiner said in a Twitter post. “with this being said I would like to announce that I have placed my name in the NCAA transfer portal.”

Kiner, a former four-star recruit in the 2021 class, finished as LSU’s second-leading rusher as a true freshman with 324 yards and two touchdowns on 79 carries. With rushing leader [autotag]Ty Davis-Price[/autotag] heading to the NFL, Kiner would have likely seen a bigger role as a sophomore.

However, there will be a lot of competition for carries this fall. [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag] is back from academic ineligibility, and LSU has another talented sophomore back in [autotag]Armoni Goodwin[/autotag].

Kiner’s loss hurts, especially for a team with no proven commodities at running back. The Tigers will hope Emery’s long-awaited return is as impactful as fans have hoped it would be.

LSU Football history: The top 20 all-time leading rushers

Much of LSU’s history has been defined by dominant running backs. Here are the best of the bunch.

LSU has certainly staked a claim as “WRU” in recent years, as the Tigers have produced NFL stars Justin Jefferson, Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry.

However, for much of this program’s history, the bread-and-butter has been the run game. Many former Tigers players were very successful in that regard, such as [autotag]Kevin Faulk[/autotag], [autotag]Dalton Hilliard[/autotag] and [autotag]Leonard Fournette[/autotag].

With [autotag]Ty Davis-Price[/autotag] moving on to the NFL after this season, [autotag]John Emery Jr.[/autotag] makes his long-awaited return to the field and will look to be the next great player on that list.

Here is the current list of the top 20 leading rushers in the history of the LSU program.

NFLSU draft: List of Tigers who have declared for the 2022 draft

So far 10 LSU Tigers have declared for the NFL draft.

With the 2021 campaign officially over, players from the 2021 roster are making their intentions known. At this point in the process, a total of 10 LSU Tigers have opted for the 2022 NFL draft.

It began with Damone Clark, who was the first to decide to skip the bowl game in preparation for the draft. He is set to participate in Reese’s Senior Bowl to help his draft stock. Clark was ranked as one of the top players to watch in the week-long event. Shortly thereafter, it was Neil Farrell Jr that followed suit and decided to skip the bowl game.

The least shocking declaration for the NFL draft was cornerback Derek Stingley Jr, who hadn’t played since week three against Central Michigan. Viewed as the top prospect for LSU and at his position. It feels as though Stingley is a lock among the top five. Any number of teams could use a cornerback with his skills.

Tyrion Davis-Price might have been the biggest one for me personally. It felt like he could use another year considering 2021 was his first year of real production in three seasons. He could be a good reserve back for a list of teams that need young talent at the position.

We will update this tracker if more players declare. Among the ten names were punter Avery Atkins and placekicker Cade York.
