UFC Fight Night 213 weigh-in video: Calvin Kattar, Arnold Allen on point for headliner

The UFC Fight Night 213 main event is locked in after Calvin Kattar and Arnold Allen made weight.

LAS VEGAS – The UFC Fight Night 213 main event is locked in after [autotag]Calvin Kattar[/autotag] and [autotag]Arnold Allen[/autotag] made weight on Friday.

Kattar (23-6 MMA, 7-4 UFC) and Allen (18-1 MMA, 9-0 UFC) are slated to meet in a five-round featherweight matchup at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas on Saturday, with the entire card set to stream on ESPN+.

First, though, both made had to step on the scale to make the fight official. They did that without issue, because Kattar was first to the scale and registered at 146 pounds. Allen trailed right behind him, and weighed 145.5 pounds.

Watch the video above to see Kattar and Allen weigh in for UFC Fight Night 213.

Come fight night, six-time UFC headliner Kattar will attempt to rebound from his split decision loss to Josh Emmett earlier this year. Allen, for his part, has gone unbeaten through his first nine UFC appearances, and will attempt to continue his streak when he serves as as a main event in the octagon for the first time.

Spinning Back Clique: UFC 280 preview, Alexa Grasso’s big win, possible Jon Jones return, more

Join us for this week’s live stream of “Spinning Back Clique” looking at the biggest news and topics in MMA.

Check out this week’s “Spinning Back Clique,” MMA Junkie’s weekly live show that takes a spin through the biggest topics in mixed martial arts. This week’s panel of Brian “Goze” Garcia, Nolan King and Matthew Wells will join host “Gorgeous” George Garcia at noon ET (9 a.m. PT) to discuss and debate:

  • This Saturday’s top three fights at UFC 280 – [autotag]Charles Oliveira[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Islam Makhachev[/autotag], [autotag]Aljamain Sterling[/autotag] vs. [autotag]T.J. Dillashaw[/autotag], and [autotag]Petr Yan[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Sean O’Malley[/autotag] – are intriguing for different reasons. But which one is the most intriguing?
  • Former UFC two-division champion [autotag]Henry Cejudo[/autotag] has suggested that featherweight champ [autotag]Alexander Volkanovski[/autotag] is making a mistake by serving as the backup to the Oliveira-Makhachev lightweight title fight at UFC 280. Does he have a point?
  • After her impressive win over Viviane Araujo in her first UFC main event at UFC Fight Night 212, should [autotag]Alexa Grasso[/autotag] be next to challenge women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko?
  • After missing weight yet again at UFC Fight Night 212, should flyweight contender [autotag]Askar Askarov[/autotag] forfeit his standing in the division and move up to bantamweight?
  • There’s talk of a potential [autotag]Jon Jones[/autotag] return in December at UFC 282, and the top candidate to face him in his heavyweight debut is former champion Stipe Miocic. Are you taking this seriously?

“Spinning Back Clique” is released each Monday LIVE on MMA Junkie’s YouTube channel. You can watch this week’s episode in the video above.

Aspen Ladd’s debut vs. former Bellator champ set for 2022 PFL Championships

Aspen Ladd will make her PFL debut against a former Bellator champion.

[autotag]Aspen Ladd[/autotag] will make her PFL debut against a former Bellator champion next month.

Ladd (9-3) is slated to meet [autotag]Julia Budd[/autotag] (16-4) in a women’s featherweight matchup at the 2022 PFL Championships event on Nov. 25 at Hulu Theater in New York City. The main card airs on pay-per-view.

MMA Junkie confirmed the booking with two people close to the situation Wednesday following an initial report from MMA Mania. The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because the promotion has yet to make an announcement.

Ladd, 27, signed with PFL earlier this month after parting ways with the UFC following a seven-fight tenure. UFC president Dana White said positive things about Ladd following her release, but said her well documented weight-cutting issues as a bantamweight could not be overlooked.

[lawrence-related id=2586979,2586980]

It’s now a new chapter in Ladd’s career, and she’ll fights one of the more decorated fighters in women’s 145-pound history. Budd, 39, is a former Bellator titleholder who signed with PFL in 2021, but she lost her promotional debut against Kaitlin Young in October 2021. She was scheduled to fight Kayla Harrison in July but was forced to withdraw due to injury.

The latest 2022 PFL Championships lineup now includes:

  • Kayla Harrison vs. Larissa Pacheco – for women’s lightweight championship
  • Bubba Jenkins vs. Brendan Loughnane – for featherweight championship
  • Olivier Aubin-Mercier vs. Stevie Ray – for lightweight championship
  • Sadibou Sy vs. Dilano Taylor – for welterweight championship
  • Omari Akhmedov vs. Rob Wilkinson – for light heavyweight championship
  • Ante Delija vs. Matheus Scheffel – for heavyweight championship
  • Shane Burgos vs. Marlon Moraes
  • Julia Budd vs. Aspen Ladd
  • Biaggio Ali Walsh vs. opponent TBA

Among Us VR launches this fall

The highly anticipated VR version of Among Us is coming out soon.

If you were one of the millions swept up in Among Us hype in recent years — there’s an all-new version releasing next month.

During the Meta Connect 2022 showcase on Tuesday, Innersloth announced that Among Us VR is coming out on Nov. 10, 2022, and will be available via the Meta Quest, Rift, and Steam storefronts.

What sets this release apart from Among Us is, well – obviously, the fact it’s in VR. The typical routines like emergency meetings, hardware sabotages, and crew operations are all re-created in full 3D for VR devices. Innersloth co-developed Among Us VR with Schell Games.

Check out the release date announcement trailer below. The shift in perspective is refreshing, that’s for sure!

Among Us VR will launch just in time for the holidays, and we can’t wait to hear how family and friends band together and betray each other as they complete tasks aboard the Skeld II,” Victoria Tran, community director at Innersloth, said in a press release. “The VR version of Among Us remains true to the spirit of the original game while also giving players an all-new way to experience the chaos and thrill of accusing your friends of murder!”

By this point, Among Us is on virtually every platform, from Xbox Game Pass to PlayStation Network and beyond.

Persona 3 and 4 launch next year for current-generation platforms

Two JRPG classics are coming back for consoles and PC in 2023.

The Persona series is more popular than ever, and two classic entries are coming back to commemorate that success.

Publisher Atlus announced last week that Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden will launch on Jan. 19, 2023, for PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Additionally, both games will also be available for Xbox Game Pass subscribers on that date. PS5 owners, worry not – both titles will be playable via backward compatibility.

The release history of these titles is almost comically intricate. Persona 3 Portable (better known as P3P) originally came out on PSP in 2009 and was a light reimaging of the PS2 release from 2006. Meanwhile, Persona 4 Golden released in 2012 for the PlayStation Vita and was an enhanced port of the 2008 PS2 version.

More Persona goodness is on the way, too. Several months back, Atlus revealed that Persona 5 Royal will launch on Friday, Oct. 21, for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. Yup, the former PlayStation exclusive will be available on pretty much every platform out there.

An all-new Persona spinoff is also in the works, though it’s not a full-fledged sequel like many fans were hoping.

Wild Hearts hands-off preview — blood and thunder

EA and Koei Tecmo are teaming up for an awe-inspiring hunt.

Besting giant beasts using nothing but human ingenuity is an age-old power fantasy. It’s why Capcom’s Monster Hunter series has become a global phenomenon, and plenty of other studios are getting in on the titan-slaying fun now.

Wild Hearts is the latest contender in this blossoming genre. Brought to us by the somewhat odd pairing of publisher Electronic Arts (EA) and developer Koei Tecmo, Wild Hearts makes crafting know-how an essential part of hunting — arrogant fools that believe blades alone will do the trick need not apply. The skill ceiling is high and pretty daunting, but once everything starts clicking together, Wild Hearts turns into something special.

Set in a beautiful high-fantasy feudal world known as Azuma, Wild Hearts tasks you with the arduous task of taking down enormous animals that have been terrorizing residents. These brutes, called Kemono, use magic to grow exponentially in size and manipulate nature. Interestingly, each mimics a real-world creature — no dragons, dinosaurs, or mythical beasts exist in Wild Hearts. Kingtusk, for example, is a city-bus-sized wild boar with tree roots growing out its back. It’s not the sort of quarry you can take out with just a bow.

Thankfully, Azuma is a land where hunters are also genius inventors. Karakuri, a construction system that lets you build helpful contraptions like springboards and gliders, is what sets Wild Hearts apart from something like Monster Hunter. During a special presentation, whoever was playing made a miniature helicopter that allowed them to get above the giant boar and avoid its brutal ground attacks. It was quite a death-from-above scenario, ending with the hunter’s sword slicing off a tusk. According to Koei Tecmo, you can build a staggering amount of Karakuri, ranging from small trinkets like zip lines to massive walls. Weapons alone come in eight different types with more than 200 craftable variations. It’s a safe bet that theorycrafting enthusiasts will probably love picking-away at Karakuri recipes.

Sometimes it takes more than cunning carpentry skills to defeat a Kemono, though — which is where multiplayer comes into the equation. At virtually any moment, up to three people can team up for hunts in Wild Hearts. “Hunter gates” are spread throughout the overworld, letting players join each other’s games easily. Every quest, hunting excursion, and moment throughout the roughly 30-hour campaign is playable in co-op. However, an extra helping hand likely won’t instantly make fights easier since the overall difficulty scales depending on how many players are together.

Kemono encounters dramatically change depending on what sort of biome you’re in as well. Wild Hearts has four major open-world zones, each with a different seasonal motif. The Kingtusk’s area contains massive cherry blossom trees from which every creature draws power. While I didn’t get to see much of the other three regions, it was obvious that Koei Tecmo’s team is putting in loads of effort to make Azuma feel like a living, breathing world.

There’s tons of ambition going into Wild Hearts, and everything looks promising from what I’ve seen. Whether it sticks the landing or not is tough to predict, but we will find out when Wild Hearts comes out on Feb. 17, 2023, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Why does the 2022-23 NHL season begin in Europe?

The 2022-23 NHL season will start a bit differently this year.

The start of the 2022-23 NHL season will look a bit different than it has in previous years.

Regular season NHL games are set to begin on Friday, October 7, but only for two teams, the San Jose Sharks and Nashville Predators, who are set to play in Europe. A curious decision by the NHL indeed to begin the regular season on a Friday and at 2 p.m. ET no less.

So, what gives here? Well, the reason the season is beginning in Europe is due to the 2022 NHL Global Series. The Predators and Sharks will play in two regulation international games in the Czech Republic on October 7 and 8 to kick off the start of the 2022-23 NHL season.

Previously, the NHL has had early season games in Europe as part of the Global Series. Most recently, the Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers played in the Czech Republic in 2019. However, this is the first time the NHL Global Series has begun a season for the NHL.

The rest of the season will begin on Tuesday, October 11. You can watch the 2022-23 NHL season streaming on ESPN+.

Frankie Edgar set for retirement bout at UFC 281 vs. Chris Gutierrez

Frankie Edgar will make his final walk to the UFC cage under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden.

According to [autotag]Frankie Edgar[/autotag], he has one (organized) fight left in him – and now it has a date, opponent, and location.

At UFC 281, a Nov.12 event set for Madison Square Garden in New York, the former UFC lightweight champion Edgar (24-10-1 MMA, 18-10-1 UFC) will fight [autotag]Chris Gutierrez[/autotag] (18-3-2 MMA, 6-1-1 UFC) in what he is saying will be his final outing.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup confirmed the booking Thursday to MMA Junkie but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. ESPN first reported the news.

Edgar, 40, will look to snap a two-fight skid and enter retirement on a win. He most recently competed at UFC 268 in December 2021 when he was knocked out by Marlon Vera. Prior to that, Edgar was knocked out by a Cory Sandhagen flying knee.

A likely future UFC Hall of Famer, Edgar has competed in high-level bouts since his promotional debut in 2007. He won the UFC lightweight championship against B.J. Penn in 2010 and defended it successfully twice after. Edgar fought for UFC titles four more times, but came up short in each.

Gutierrez, 31, has not lost in seven fights. He rides a three-fight winning streak into the bout that includes victories over Andre Ewell, Felipe Colares and Danaa Batgerel.

The latest UFC 281 lineup now includes:

  • Israel Adesanya vs. Alex Pereira – for middleweight title
  • Carla Esparza vs. Zhang Weili – for strawweight title
  • Michael Chandler vs. Dustin Poirier
  • Erin Blanchfield vs. Molly McCann
  • Dominick Reyes vs. Ryan Spann
  • Seungwoo Choi vs. Michael Trizano
  • Silvana Gomez Juarez vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz

  • Dan Hooker vs. Claudio Puelles
  • Nicolae Negumereanu vs. Carlos Ulberg
