UFC flyweight Carlos Mota suspended by NSAC for failed drug test

UFC flyweight Carlos Mota has been temporarily suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission.

UFC flyweight [autotag]Carlos Mota[/autotag] has been temporarily suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission.

Mota (8-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) allegedly tested positive for Meldonium, a metabolic modulator that is banned by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). The temporary suspension was announced at Tuesday’s meeting of the Nevada State Athletic Commission in Las Vegas.

Nevada Attorney General’s Office representative Joel Bekker announced the continuance of the suspension and said Mota was temporarily suspended Dec. 15. Mota will learn the length of his suspension at a future hearing.

Mota’s failed test came after his unanimous decision loss to Cody Durden at UFC Fight Night 213 on Oct. 29, 2022. Mota lost the fight, which was his UFC debut, by unanimous decision.

Mota punched his ticket to the UFC after he knocked out Rizvan Abuev to win LFA’s vacant flyweight title in August 2022. The Brazilian went 3-1 for that promotion before he took the UFC’s offer to replace Kleydson Rodrigues to fight Durden on short notice.

Tresean Gore feels like he ‘belongs in the top’ after UFC Fight Night 213 finish

Tresean Gore is feeling confident after notching his first octagon win at UFC Fight Night 213.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Tresean Gore[/autotag] is feeling confident after notching his first octagon win at UFC Fight Night 213.

Gore (4-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) earned a Performance of the Night bonus for his vicious second-round guillotine choke of Josh Fremd this past Saturday at the UFC Apex.

The Season 29 Ultimate Fighter runner-up didn’t quite live up to his potential since coming off the show, but is now ready to prove that he’s a top-level fighter.

“It feels really good to officially call myself a UFC fighter,” Gore told reporters at the UFC Fight Night 213 post-fight press conference. “Against a tough 9-3 opponent, against a guy that sat down and watched film on me to beat me, but it feels good. It feels really good.”

He continued, “My ground game is solid. People don’t know about it because I just would prefer to knock people out on the feet sometimes. But it doesn’t mean I’m not a well-rounded fighter, and tonight I showed that I was well-rounded.”

Gore spent his training camp at Fortis MMA under the guidance of coach Sayif Saud, and plans on going there again for his next fight.

“I just want to improve,” Gore said. “I feel like I belong in the top. I feel like I’m elite in certain areas, but I just gotta improve. I gotta get better. I feel like Fortis is the place to do that.”

After UFC Fight Night 213 debut win, Waldo Cortes-Acosta calls out Mohammed Usman

Waldo Cortes-Acosta wants to meet the heavyweight winner of TUF 30.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Waldo Cortes-Acosta[/autotag] didn’t get a finish in his debut, but was glad to have the chance to express himself while showing his abilities on the main card of UFC Fight Night 213.

The Dominican heavyweight was unable to put Jared Vanderaa away, despite landing a number of hard punches that found their target. In return, Vanderaa (12-10 MMA, 1-6 UFC) landed hard leg kicks that Cortes-Acosta (8-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) appeared to have no answer for initially, but drew out audible taunts and emotion.

“Yeah, I felt them, but that’s why we’re here,” Cortes-Acosta told reporters through an interpreter at the post-fight news conference. “It’s a war, and whatever he needs to do. If your leg is shot, whatever happens, you need to keep pounding.”

“Salsa Boy” said he does not believe his leg is injured, just swollen and painful. He anticipates he’ll be able to return to training in a few days.

While working through the leg kicks approach of his opponent, Cortes-Acosta taunted a number of times by yelling and even breaking out a salsa dance in a nod to his nickname.

“It is a stage,” Cortes-Acosta said. “A stage where you can dance, you can be yourself, express yourself, you gotta play, everybody’s looking at you. That’s what you’re going to see from me. … The more I continue to fight, that’s the Waldo you’re going to see, somebody that’s loose and happy to be here.”

[lawrence-related id=2592809,2592558]

Cortes-Acosta credited Vanderaa for his toughness, and anticipated he would be hungry to prove something to himself and the promotion. However, he also believes his opponent didn’t account for the hard work and sacrifice he put in to be successful as well.

When he does return, Cortes-Acosta wants to mix it up with the heavyweight winner of the most recent season of “The Ultimate Fighter.”

“I think he’s actually watching the fight, and I think he’s watching the interviews, and I think he knows it’s him that I want, Mohammaed Usman.”

UFC Fight Night 213 winner Marcos Rogerio de Lima wants top 15 opponent at UFC 283 in Rio

Marcos Rogerio de Lima thinks it’s time he got a chance to face a ranked opponent after his win over Andrei Arlovski at UFC Fight Night 213.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Marcos Rogerio de Lima[/autotag] thinks it’s time he drew a ranked opponent.

De Lima (20-8-1 MMA, 9-6 UFC) made quick work of former heavyweight champion and American Top Team teammate Andrei Arlovski at UFC Fight Night 213 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. With wins in three of his past four, the Brazilian wants a step up in competition – and he wants it at home.

“Pezao” hasn’t fought in Brazil since a submission loss to Gadzhimurad Antigulov in November 2016 and hopes to land on the UFC 283 card on Jan. 21 in Rio de Janeiro.

“It would be really great to actually fight in Brazil – a card that’s going to be really important, the return of the UFC in Rio,” De Lima told reporters at the UFC Fight Night 213 post-fight press conference. “I think it would be really good. Obviously, (I want to fight) someone in the top 15 because I think I deserve the shot. It would be great to have a rematch against Blagoy (Ivanov) from last time. I know the UFC won’t set up that matchup, but anyone that wants to do some sightseeing in Rio, anybody that’s out there, I’ll be glad to face that guy.”

De Lima, who’s competed in three different weight classes throughout his career, has found his groove at heavyweight.

“You see the evolution. You see how better I’ve become,” de Lima said. “I think it’s out there for everyone to see. Even the last fight, without a win I feel like I could have done enough to actually win. So the hard work has paid off, and of course, beating a guy like (Arlovski) is even better.”
