Kirk Herbstreit: Ryan Day could ‘stop calling plays next year’

The conversation has happened #GoBucks

Ohio State’s [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] is one of the few head coaches who still calls his team’s offensive plays. That could be coming to an end as the Buckeye boss enters his sixth season at the helm.

According to former [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] quarterback and current ESPN analyst [autotag]Kirk Herbstreit[/autotag], Day told him during one of their production meetings that he was thinking of relinquishing play calling next year in an effort “to be more of a manager as a head coach.” Herbstreit went on to explain the rationale by saying “when you’re prepping a game plan, it’s a lot more that goes into it Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday to be ready to call those plays on Saturday.”

Keep in mind that Herbstreit said Day “is thinking about relinquishing” calling plays. The decision has not been made. With offensive coordinator [autotag]Kevin Wilson[/autotag] now the head coach at [autotag]Tulsa[/autotag], there is an open role in Columbus.

The first name that the former Buckeye quarterback mentioned was [autotag]Brian Hartline[/autotag], which makes plenty of sense. He could still coach the wide receivers while calling plays on Saturdays. Since we have yet to hear what the exact plans are from Day himself, at this moment it’s just conjecture.

Report: Ohio State could be losing one of its coordinators

It’s wait and see if he actually decides to leave. #GoBucks

For most coaches, the ultimate goal is to become a head coach with plenty of success. Buckeye offensive coordinator [autotag]Kevin Wilson[/autotag] has one of those boxes checked off, being a head coach. The success part eluded Wilson. His tenure at [autotag]Indiana[/autotag] didn’t go the way he would have liked.

From 2011 through 2016, Wilson led the Hoosiers to a 26-47 record, with just one bowl appearance that they lost. Just a few months after Wilson and Indiana went separate ways, [autotag]Urban Meyer[/autotag] hired him as the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator. Wilson has held the position since, even during a coaching change to [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag]. According to a report by Cayden McFarland of KJRH TV in Tulsa, Wilson is expected to be named Tulsa’s next head coach.

McFarland expects a formal announcement on Tuesday, so we will wait to see if his report is factual. If it is true, it throws a wrench into Ohio State’s preparation for [autotag]Georgia[/autotag] in the [autotag]College Football Playoff [/autotag] semifinals. We will not know if Wilson will stay until the season is over or leave to get his potential new job started.

Why Tulsa Will Win

Start throwing, keep throwing, make Houston stop it.

The Cougar defense came up with a shocking performance in the 42-3 win over East Carolina last week, but for the most part the pass defense is getting thrown on at will.

Between the nine touchdown passes allowed against SMU, to the 486 yards given up in the win over Temple, to team after team hitting the midrange passes, the D will give up 300 passing yards to anyone who can throw.

Tulsa hasn’t always been sharp, but it will hit enough big plays to keep pushing the Cougar secondary.

Why Houston Will Win

Start running, keep running, make Tulsa stop it.

The Golden Hurricane defense gives up yards in chunks, but it hasn’t been awful against the more mediocre offenses. Houston’s offense can do just about anything.

It might not be consistent, but it ripped off huge runs in the SMU and Temple games and should be using for five yards per carry in this. That, and the passing game that’s connecting on close to 70% of its passes should work, too.

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams will make this a show of fireworks.

Tulsa has just enough firepower to be in the game deep into the second half, but Houston’s offense will take over late. The balance will will be enough to own the final ten minutes.

Why USF Will Win

The Bulls weren’t able to get past SMU in the first game under the interim reign of Daniel Da Prato, but the offense was balanced and it wasn’t all that bad. The passing game has to be sharper and the O overall wasn’t able to keep up, but it wasn’t anything totally different.

The Tulsa offensive front isn’t great in pass protection, the running game isn’t great, and there are enough turnovers to potentially give the Bulls a shot.

The Golden Hurricane turned it over multiple times five times in the last six games, and USF needs them. However …

Bowl Projections | 10 Best Picks ATS

Why Tulsa Will Win

Can the Tulsa offense finally perk back up?

The passing game that was so strong earlier in the season hasn’t shown up over the last few games against the better teams, but it should work again without a problem this week.

The Bulls can’t do anything on third downs, the secondary is the second-worst in American in pass efficiency defense. and overall the D is dead last allowing 508 yards per game.

Tulsa might not be able to consistently get things moving, but they’ll put up yards in bunches when it has to.

USF allowed 200 yards rushing and 200 receiving in three of the last four games, and …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Tulsa won’t have to press. It might have a turnover issue, but USF’s defense isn’t taking it away.

USF isn’t coming close to stopping the run, passing games are hitting 75% of their passes over the last three games, and all of a sudden, the Tulsa O will return to its September form – at least for one game.

Tulsa vs Memphis Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

The Golden Hurricane might be sputtering a bit, but they’ve still got a shot at a bowl game by winning out.

The offense isn’t consistent enough, but the pass defense has been great, the running game is fine, and the team scores when it gets the chance.

For all that Memphis is doing right, it’s in a worse tailspin than Tulsa is with four straight losses thanks to a slew of turnovers, a defense that isn’t coming up with key stops or big plays, and …

CFP Rankings: Think, Know, Believe

Why Memphis Will Win

The Tulsa offense has stalled.

It ripped through everyone in the early part of the season with a high-octane passing game, but it’s not working with fewer than 160 passing yards in two of the last three games. There weren’t any turnovers against Tulane, but the 11 turnovers in the four games before that were a killer.

Memphis might have crashed against four of the stronger teams in the AAC, but the passing game is still amazing, the firepower isn’t there, and things should be fine as long as there aren’t a slew of turnovers.

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Memphis is still throwing well even during the problems, and in this it’ll be about the running game.

3-0 when running 44 times or more, the Tigers are going to pound and pound some more against a Tulsa run defense that’s getting ripped apart by anyone who’s trying.

The Golden Hurricane offense will have its moments, but it won’t be able to keep up.

Tulane vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Tulane Will Win

The College Football Playoff gave the Green Wave enough love and respect for the No. 19 spot and the top team among the Group of Five programs – they’re in the lead in the race for the New Year’s Six bowl slot, but they have to win the conference to get there.

They’re making up for a few problems on defense with lots of takeaways – eight in the last three games – and the offense continues to be careful with the ball, adaptable, and very, very efficient through the air.

Tulsa’s offensive line has problems in pass protection, Tulane’s defense – No. 1 in the AAC – should be able to live in the backfield, and …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Tulsa Will Win

Tulsa has the passing game to keep up.

Tulane might have good defensive numbers, but it’s having problems against anyone who can throw.

Davis Brin has put up big numbers all year, but freshman Braylon Braxton stepped in against SMU wins was solid enough to be a problem for the Green Wave D – if he gets in.

The Tulsa has been good enough against the pass – it has more problems against the run. The offense is strong enough to make this a bit of a shootout, but …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Tulane doesn’t come up with a ton of takeaways, but Tulsa will provide them.

The running game should hit 200 yards, the offense will keep things moving and should control the clock enough to steady things after getting hit with a big pass play. Being +2 in turnover margin will make a big difference in a fun back-and-forth fight.

SMU vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why SMU Will Win

The passing offense continues to roll.

The team overall has a few issues and concerns, but the Mustangs are able to bomb away for well over 300 yards per game put the pressure on teams to try keeping up. Sometimes it works, and that’s when the mistakes come.

Tulsa hasn’t faced a whole slew of teams that can throw like SMU will, and it usually has big, big problems against the run. The Mustangs can run effectively when needed – they’re fine as long as they can crank up five yards per carry.

But they need to throw well to pull this off. They’ll get the yards, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Tulsa Will Win

Is starting QB Tanner Mordecai okay? He’s questionable after getting knocked out of the 29-27 loss to Cincinnati last week. Preston Stone is promising, but he’s not close to being the proven passer the main man is.

Again, it’s not like Tulsa has faced a who’s who of passing teams, but the pass defense is technically the best in the AAC. And again, the stats skew one way because everyone runs on the Golden Hurricane D, but the secondary is able to keep teams from throwing when they want to.

Offenses are only hitting 53% of their passes against this bunch, and if it’s Stone under center the numbers might not be a whole lot better.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, SMU is struggling at 2-5, but the losses came to Maryland and UCF on the road and at home against TCU and Cincinnati. None of those are egregious errors.

Tulsa has been way too inconsistent offensively, and the SMU defense has to take advantage of that by getting into the backfield against a struggling front line.

It’ll be a fight, but the Mustangs will sneak on by with the running game and pass rush working when it has to.

Tulsa vs Temple Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

Just score.

Tulsa has a whole lot of issues, but it has a high-powered passing offense and enough firepower to at least throw a few touchdowns on the board.

Would it be nice if this was the type of attack that scored 40ish without breathing hard? Of course, but that’s not necessary.

Temple doesn’t score.

It doesn’t move the chains, it doesn’t have a good enough running game, and it turns it over too much. It put up 28 in the win over UMass, but it hasn’t scores more than 14 against any other FBS team.

Combine that with being -10 in turnover margin, and there’s a problem.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Temple Will Win

What Temple does do right is attack, attack, attack.

The pass rush continues to be great, and that’s just enough be a bother against teams that can’t hold up on the line. Memphis gave up five sacks, UMass allowed four, Rutgers two, and the eight against Lafayette mattered.

Tulsa is one of the worst teams in America in pass protection. It’s going to be bothered all game long by LB Layton Jordan and the front seven that keeps on coming.

Here’s the real problem …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Padres-Phillies will be going on in the city at the exact same time as this. Let’s just say this won’t be the most tuned-in of football atmospheres.

Temple is coming off giving up 70 to UCF. Tulsa is coming off giving up 53 to Navy. Something has to give, and it’ll be the Owl defense just a wee bit.

Tulsa can score a little bit. Temple will score more than it usually does, but it won’t be consistent enough in the second half.

Navy vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

How do you beat Navy? You stop the run and control the clock. There’s a problem with the first part, but the second aspect shouldn’t be an issue.

Tulsa has the ability to get the passing game going. Get up fast, make Navy press, and all should be fine against an offense that doesn’t put up points in bulk and doesn’t have the ability to mount any sort of a comeback.

No, the stats against the run aren’t great, but that’s partly because the Golden Hurricane dealt with Ole Miss and Cincinnati over the last two weeks.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Navy Will Win

There’s a pass rush.

Navy might be known for its ground game, but the dense and pass rush have been the key to a decent team that might be 1-3 but it’s competitive enough to make games interesting.

The running game hasn’t worked like it needs to, but it should hit 200 yards for the second time all year while the other side should make a whole slew of plays in the backfield on a consistent basis.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Tulsa needs to get its season going with a. win.

The two nastiest games on the slate are out of the way, and now it needs to kick in or else a bowl game might be out of reach. It starts by scoring early, but Navy is playing strong enough defense to keep that from happening.

What Navy isn’t doing is running well.

It’s averaging just 3.2 yards per carry, but the attack will be okay against the Tulsa D. It’ll be a bit of a higher scoring game than Navy might like – Tulsa is better equipped for it.
