Navajo Stirling vs. Tuco Tokkos prediction, pick, start time for UFC on ESPN 63

Oddsmakers expect Navajo Stirling to shine in his debut at UFC Tampa, but does Tuco Tokkos have a path to victory?

[autotag]Navajo Stirling[/autotag] and [autotag]Tuco Tokkos[/autotag] meet Saturday in the UFC on ESPN 63 main card opener at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Navajo Stirling vs. Tuco Tokkos UFC on ESPN 63 preview

Stirling (5-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) makes his UFC debut in a main card opening slot. The Dana White’s Contender Series signee won his “job interview” by stopping Phillip Latu in the second round with a vicious left hook. In five pro fights, Stirling has only reached the judges scorecards once. … Tokkos (10-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC) will aim to secure his first UFC victory while potentially saving his spot on the roster. In his May debut, Tokkos was submitted in the first round by Oumar Sy. Back-to-back first-round wins on the regional scene led to his entrance into the UFC.

Navajo Stirling vs. Tuco Tokkos UFC on ESPN 63 expert pick, prediction

Despite having a slew of surefire action fights at featherweight and lightweight that are stuck on the prelims, the UFC matchmakers can’t help themselves when it comes to the big boys, as Stirling and Tokkos get the vaunted main-card opener spot (and yes, card placement does matter, folks).

To the matchmaker’s credit, this fight should see a decisive finish given how it’s booked.

In fact, I called for this exact booking in my grading the winners column after Stirling’s win on last season of Dana White’s Contender Series.

Stirling impressed me in that fight, so it’s no shock to see the City Kickboxing product favored here. Tokkos may have a slight on-paper edge on the floor, but I don’t think his wrestling is good enough to get past Stirling’s clinch and defensive fundamentals.

The pick is Stirling by second-round knockout.

Navajo Stirling vs. Tuco Tokkos UFC on ESPN 63 odds

The oddsmakers and the public are heavily favoring the undefeated debuting fighter, listing Stirling -720 and Tokkos +520 via FanDuel.

Newcomer steps into UFC Fight Night 241 on four days’ notice

A former Bellator and Road to UFC combatant has signed and will fight Oumar Sy on four days’ notice.

Four days out from UFC Fight Night 241, the lineup was tweaked.

Former Bellator and Road to UFC fighter [autotag]Tuco Tokkos[/autotag] has filled a void left by [autotag]Antonio Trocoli[/autotag] and will fight [autotag]Oumar Sy[/autotag], promotion officials confirmed Tuesday after an initial report by Al Zullino. The light heavyweight bout takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Tucos (10-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC) originally entered the international spotlight in Bellator but was released after an 0-2 stint with the promotion. Since then, he’s gone 6-1 with his lone loss a brutal knockout against current UFC fighter Zhang Mingyang on Road to UFC in June 2022. He enters Saturday’s bout on a three-fight winning streak.

It’s unclear why Trocoli (12-3 MMA, 0-0 UFC) withdrew. The 33-year-old Brazilian continues to have issues stepping in the UFC cage. He was signed off Dana White’s Contender Series in 2019, but then released after a drug test came back positive. He was signed again in 2022, but withdrew from a bout vs. Ovince Saint Preux. It’s unclear if he remained on the roster before his reappearance in the booking vs. Sy.

Sy (9-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) is also a promotional debutant. He previously competed for KSW and ARES FC among other promotions and has seven finishes (four knockouts and three submissions) in seven pro wins. Once he debuts, Sy will register the fourth-longest reach in promotion history at 83.9″.

With the change, the UFC Fight Night 241 fight card includes:

MAIN CARD (ESPN+, 7 p.m. ET)

  • Edson Barboza vs. Lerone Murphy
  • Carlston Harris vs. Khaos Williams
  • Ramiz Brahimaj vs. Themba Gorimbo
  • Vinicius Salvador vs. Adrian Yanez
  • Angela Hill vs. Luana Pinheiro

PRELIMINARY CARD (ESPN+, 4 p.m. ET)

  • Victor Martinez vs. Tom Nolan
  • Oumar Sy vs. Tuco Tokkos
  • Melissa Gatto vs. Tamires Vidal
  • Warlley Alves vs. Abus Magomedov
  • Ariane Carnelossi vs. Piera Rodriguez
  • Heili Alateng vs. Kleydson Rodrigues
  • Vanessa Demopoulos vs. Emily Ducote

Massive underdog Zhang Mingyang scores scary KO over Tuco Tokkos at in ‘Road to UFC’ opener

The “Road to UFC” series got off to a spectacular and scary start courtesy of Zhang Mingyang’s knockout win.

The “Road to UFC” series got off to a spectacular and scary start Thursday when he [autotag]Zhang Mingyang[/autotag] scored a devastating knockout of [autotag]Tuco Tokkos[/autotag] on Episode 1.

Tokkos, who came into the light heavyweight fight as a -675 betting favorite, caught by Mingyang’s punches late in the first round and went down in a heap. Mingyang added a few unnecessary and powerful shots to his opponent’s chin when he was down, earning the stoppage at 3:57 mark of Round 1.

After taking the knockout, Tokkos remained on the canvas for several minutes out cold. He eventually rose to his feet, but needed to be carried to the back by his coaches in a disoriented state.

Check out the replay of the brutal knockout below (via Twitter):

The matchup between Mingyang and Tokkos was a non-tournament bout at “Road to UFC.” The fight took place at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore and streamed on UFC Fight Pass.
