Broncos worked out 12 players, including 3 WRs from the CFL

The Broncos worked out 12 players on Monday, including three wide receivers from the CFL.

The Denver Broncos brought in 12 players for workouts on Monday, including 11 players from the Canadian Football League, according to a report from KPRC-TV’s Aaron Wilson.

Denver brought in three wide receivers, two offensive linemen, four linebackers and three defensive linemen. Of the 11 CFL players, four have spent time in the NFL: linebacker Isaac Darkangelo (Lions, Raiders), receiver Makai Polk (Ravens, Giants), defensive lineman Jonah Tavai (Seahawks) and Davion Taylor (Eagles, Bears, Cardinals).

Only one of the players, offensive lineman Spencer Rolland, is not a CFL player. Rolland was cut from the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad earlier this month. View the full list of Monday’s workout players below.

  1. WR AJou Ajou (6-2, 211 pounds)
  2. WR Ayden Eberhardt (6-2, 195 pounds)
  3. WR Makai Polk (6-3, 197 pounds)
  4. OL Logan Ferland (6-4, 275 pounds)

Broncos worked out one player on Saturday

The Broncos worked out left-footed punter Colton Spangler on Saturday.

The Denver Broncos brought in one player for a workout on Saturday.

Because they are facing left-footed Cleveland Browns punter Corey Bojorquez on Monday Night Football in Week 13, the Broncos worked out left-footed free agent Colton Spangler, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Spangler (6-0, 192 pounds) spent five years punting at Maryland, earning honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition in 2022. His career punting average of 42.8 ranks third all-time in Terrapins school history. Spangler punted 80 times for 7,695 yards in college.

Denver presumably wanted to give returners Marvin Mims and Tremon Smith practice fielding left-footed punts this week ahead of the Browns game. The Broncos’ own punter, Riley Dixon, is right-footed, and Mims and Smith usually face right-footed punters on game days as well.

In addition to giving Denver’s returners good reps at practice this week, Spangler could also be a fallback option for the Broncos down the road if the team ever has a punter emergency.

3 players had workouts with Broncos on Friday

The Broncos worked out long snapper Peter Bowden and punters Jake Julien and Ty Zentner on Friday.

The Denver Broncos brought in three special teams players for workouts on Friday, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. The team worked out a long snapper — Peter Bowden — and two punters: Jake Julien and Ty Zentner.

Bowden, 23, played college football at Wisconsin. He spent time with the Green Bay Packers and Jacksonville Jaguars this year but is yet to appear in a regular season game in the NFL.

Julien, 26, played college football at Eastern Michigan and competed with the New England Patriots at training camp in 2022 before landing in the Canadian Football League in 2023. He earned All-CFL honors with the Edmonton Elks after a record-breaking season in Canada this summer.

Zentner, 26, entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas State in 2023. He has spent time with four NFL teams, playing in 10 games. In one game with the Los Angeles Rams earlier this year, he punted seven times for 281 yards. His career average in the NFL is 44.1 yards per punt (Riley Dixon is averaging 46.7 yards per punt with Denver this season).

Broncos worked out 3 players

  1. LS Peter Bowden
  2. P Jake Julien
  3. P Ty Zenter

Denver previously worked out six players last week. The Broncos are likely looking at candidates for future contracts at the end of the season and/or candidates to sign if injuries pop up later this season.

Saints set to work out former draft pick Boston Scott in the coming days

The Saints are hosting Boston Scott for a workout in the near future, potentially bringing a former draft pick of theirs back home

The New Orleans Saints’ depth has been depleted the last few weeks due to injuries, especially at the running back position. Kendre Miller is now on IR with a hamstring injury, and Jamaal Williams missed Week 9 due to a groin injury. Now the Saints are down to the following at the position:

  • Alvin Kamara
  • Jamaal Williams (groin injury)
  • Jordan Mims
  • Jacob Kibodi (practice squad)

So much for taking the workload off of Alvin Kamara, as he got 29 rush attempts for 155 yards against the Carolina Panthers, as well as six receptions on nine targets for 60 yards through the air.

Now, the Saints will turn to other options for depth at the position, as they will workout one of their former draft picks Boston Scott. Scott was a sixth round pick for the Saints in the 2018 NFL Draft, but never made the active roster and was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles off the Saints practice squad. Scott was a solid option for the Eagles, picking up 302 rush attempts for 1,295 yards (4.3 yards per carry) and 16 touchdowns in his 75 games with them. Additionally, he had 71 receptions for 566 yards (8.0 yards per reception) and a touchdown through the air.

Scott partially tore a meniscus before the 2024 season, which led him to miss the time up until now. However he is now fully healthy according to FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz, and will be ready to play for a new team.

Broncos worked out 2 offensive linemen on Tuesday

The Broncos worked out center Dieter Eiselen and interior offensive lineman Keaton Sutherland on Tuesday. Eiselen joined the practice squad.

The Denver Broncos have been hit hard by injuries on the offensive line and the team brought in some reinforcements on Tuesday.

The Broncos worked out center Dieter Eiselen and interior offensive lineman Keaton Sutherland. Eiselen won the workout and he was signed to the team’s practice squad.

Sutherland (6-5, 316 pounds) is a fifth-year lineman who has spent time with six NFL teams, playing as a swing guard/center. The 27-year-old lineman has dressed for six games — including two starts — in his career. He most recently spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars last fall.

Denver sought more depth on the line after losing right tackle Alex Palczewski and center Luke Wattenberg to ankle injuries against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. The Broncos also lost practice squad offensive tackle Will Sherman to an ankle injury last week.

Eiselen was signed to provide more depth at center and Cam Fleming also joined the practice squad to provide more depth at tackle.

Broncos worked out 2 defensive backs on Thursday

The Broncos worked out defensive backs Marquise Blair and Alex Johnson on Thursday.

The Denver Broncos brought in a pair of defensive backs for workouts on Thursday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire (via KPRC-TV’s Aaron Wilson).

The Broncos hosted Marquise Blair and Alex Johnson on a tryout basis. As of the time of this writing, neither defensive back has been signed.

Blair (6-1, 196 pounds) entered the league as a second-round pick out of Utah with the Seattle Seahawks in 2019. He spent the first three years of his career in Seattle, totaling 49 tackles and three pass breakups in 22 games (three starts) from 2019-2021.

After being waived by the Seahawks in 2022, Blair played in three games with the Carolina Panthers before later joining the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023. He returned to Seattle this summer and spent part of the season the Seahawks’ practice squad before being released on Sept. 24. Blair is a safety who can also play as a slot cornerback.

Johnson (6-0, 185 pounds) is a rookie out of UCLA who spent time with the New York Giants this summer. He is a nickel cornerback who spent six seasons at the college level. Johnson grabbed five interceptions and broke up three passes in his final season with the Bruins last fall.

Broncos worked out two players

  1. DB Marquise Blair (Utah)
  2. DB Alex Johnson (UCLA)

The 53-man roster and 17-player practice squad are both full, so if the Broncos add a defensive back, they will need to make room on the team with a corresponding roster move.

Broncos worked out 2 running backs on Tuesday

The Broncos worked out running backs Elijah Dotson and Salvon Ahmed on Tuesday. Ahmed signed with the practice squad.

The Denver Broncos brought in two running backs for workouts on Tuesday, seeking more depth at the position following Tyler Badie’s back injury.

The Broncos worked out Elijah Dotson and Salvon Ahmed, according to the NFL’s transaction wire (via KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis). Ahmed won the tryout and signed with the team’s practice squad on Tuesday.

Ahmed (5-11, 197 pounds) is a fifth-year running back who totaled 867 yards from scrimmage and scored six touchdowns in four seasons with the Miami Dolphins from 2020-2023 (38 games with four starts).

Dotson (5-9, 202 pounds) is a second-year running back who entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Northern Colorado with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023. He dressed in four games last season, rushing four times for six yards and catching two passes for 13 yards.

After bouncing between L.A.’s practice squad and active roster last fall, Dotson was waived by the Chargers in August.

After signing on Tuesday, Ahmed joins a Denver backfield that also includes Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin, Audric Estime (currently on IR), Blake Watson and Badie.

Broncos host ex-Pro Bowl linebacker for workout

The Broncos brought in former Pro Bowl linebacker Kwon Alexander for a workout on Tuesday.

Story update: The Broncos are signing linebacker Kwon Alexander to their practice squad. See our original post below.

The Denver Broncos brought in former Pro Bowl linebacker Kwon Alexander for a workout on Tuesday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire (via Mike Klis and Aaron Wilson).

Alexander (6-1, 227 pounds) entered the league as a fourth-round pick out of LSU with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015. He spent the first four years of his career in Tampa. Alexander made PFWA’s All-Rookie Team in 2015, led the NFL in solo tackles in 2016 and made the Pro Bowl in 2017.

He then spent two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers before joining the New Orleans Saints (coached by Sean Payton at the time) in 2020. After two years in New Orleans, Alexander had stints with the New York Jets (2022) and Pittsburgh Steelers (2023).

Denver seems to be looking for more competition for linebacker Cody Barton. The Broncos signed Kristian Welch in late August and he started over Barton in Week 2 but it seems that he failed to impress because Welch was limited to special teams snaps in Week 3.

Alexander, 30, has totaled 631 tackles, 34 pass breakups, 13.5 sacks, 12 forced fumbles and nine interceptions in 104 career games (88 starts). He played nine games with the Steelers last fall before tearing his Achilles in November.

If he joins a team this fall, 2024 will mark Alexander’s 10th season in the NFL. Denver has an open spot on the practice squad after promoting wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey to the 53-man roster on Saturday.

Broncos bring in familiar face for offensive line tryouts

The Broncos brought in Cam Fleming and Braeden Daniels for tryouts following the Mike McGlinchey injury.

After losing right tackle Mike McGlinchey to a knee injury, the Denver Broncos brought in two offensive linemen for tryouts on Thursday, including a familiar face.

The Broncos worked out Braeden Daniels and Cameron Fleming, according to KPRC-TV’s Aaron Wilson. Both players have experience at right tackle.

Fleming (6-5, 320 pounds) played in Denver from 2021-2023. He started 20 games for the Broncos over three seasons, including 15 starts in 2022 (splitting time between right and left tackle). Fleming dressed for six games last fall and had one fill-in start. He has been a free agent since March.

Daniels (6-4, 297 pounds) played left tackle, left guard and right tackle at Utah before being picked by the Washington Commanders in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL draft. After spending his rookie season on injured reserve with a torn rotator cuff, Daniels failed to make Washington’s 53-man roster this summer.

Daniels then signed with the Houston Texans’ practice squad in August. He was cut on Tuesday and is now a free agent.

If the Broncos add an offensive tackle, they will need to make a corresponding move as the active roster and practice squad are both full going into the team’s Week 3 showdown with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Why the Broncos worked out a left-footed player this week

The Broncos worked out left-footed punter Michael Palardy on Wednesday before facing Pittsburgh’s Corliss Waitman on Sunday.

The Denver Broncos brought in a punter for a tryout on Wednesday, but Riley Dixon‘s job is not in jeopardy.

The Broncos hosted Michael Palardy, according to the NFL’s transaction wire (via KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis). Palardy, 32, is left-footed, and that’s no coincidence.

After losing Cameron Johnston to a season-ending injury, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed former Denver punter Corliss Waitman, who is now set to play against the Broncos on Sunday.

Waitman is left-footed and, believe it or not, catching a punt from a lefty has a different spin than catching a punt from a right-footed punter. Dixon, Denver’s current punter, is right-footed, so he can’t simulate the kind of punts Waitman will deliver on Sunday afternoon.

So, presumably to give Marvin Mims and Tremon Smith practice reps fielding a left-footed punt, the Broncos gave Palardy a tryout on Wednesday. Assuming it went well, Palardy could also be considered as a fallback option down the road if Dixon is ever unavailable.
