Spencer Rolland named a Campbell Trophy semifinalist

UNC starting right tackle Spencer Rolland is also succeeding off the field, as he was recently named a semifinalist for an academic award.

So much of the attention during college football season is on what players do during games.

People spend their hard-earned money to go see their favorite teams, cheering on their favorite players in hopes of getting a postgame selfie or autograph.

What people may not see, however, is the off-field work these players put in.

Even though the college sports landscape is now being ruled by NIL, the kids who play are still student-athletes. They often have to go from late games to study sessions, hoping to get that last paper in before the end-of-week deadline.

There’s a young man, by the name of Spencer Rolland, who’s shining in the classroom for the UNC football team.

Rolland, the Heels’ starting right tackle, was named a William V. Campbell Trophy semifinalist on Wednesday, Sept. 27. This award, named after the late Bill Campbell, recognizes someone as the nation’s best football scholar-athlete.

12-14 Finalists for the award will be announced on Wednesday, Oct. 25, with each of them receiving an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. If selected, Rolland would travel to Las Vegas and be recognized on Tuesday, Dec. 5 at the 65th National Football Foundation

While Rolland awaits his named being called for a trip to Vegas, he and his Tar Heel teammates are busy preparing for next weekend’s ACC clash with Syracuse. UNC and the Orange are both sitting at 4-0 – unfortunately, one team will exit with a blemish.

UNC’s transfer class ranks top-5 in ACC

The UNC football transfer class that Mack Brown put together ranks in the top-5 of the ACC entering the 2022 season.

It’s game week for the UNC football program and that means a lot of new faces will be seen in a Tar Heels’ uniform for the first time this season.

While some are returning players with little playing time experience, others are looking to be impact transfers from the power five level.

After losing some key pieces from last year, Mack Brown hit the transfer portal to secure commitments from players who would step in immediately and play a significant role.

According to Rivals writer Russ Wood, UNC’s transfer class is ranked in the top-5 of the ACC.

ACC opponents will be familiar with [autotag]Noah Taylor[/autotag](Virginia), who had 13 sacks as a three-year starter for the Cavaliers. He was third on the team in tackles (65) last season. UNC will used him at Jack, which should lead to Taylor making more game-changing plays. Defensive lineman J[autotag]acolbe Cowan[/autotag] (Ohio State) returns to his native North Carolina. He redshirted in 2020 as a true freshman. In 2021, Cowan saw action as a backup DE. [autotag]Corey Gaynor[/autotag] (Miami) and [autotag]Spencer Rolland[/autotag] (Harvard) provide experience and depth to the offensive line.

The Tar Heels brought in five players through the transfer portal, most notably Noah Taylor. But, all five are expected to have roles — in some capacity — this season.

UNC gets its season underway this Saturday, Aug. 27, at 7:15 pm against Florida A&M.
