Troy Trojans Preview 2022

There are lots of good teams in the Sun Belt this year. Even with a new head man, Troy has no excuse not to be in the mix among the best.

Most of the time a new head coach steps in and has to change everything up. At the very least, he has to take a little time to implement all he wants to do and tweak the program to make things better.

In the case of Troy’s new head coach Jon Sumrall, his job is to take all the veteran talent he’s inheriting and make it all work immediately.

Sumrall comes in with a defensive mindset after working in the SEC over the last few years as a linebackers coach and the co-defensive coordinator at Kentucky, but he knows the program – he was with Troy as an assistant for three years in the mid-2010s.

He gets an offense that should return ten starters, one of the most star-studded defenses in the Sun Belt with the league’s best pass rush, and now he and the new staff have to get this team to a bowl game.

Troy won 21 games in two years, and then slogged through three straight losing seasons with late season fails turning what should’ve been bowl campaigns into three straight five-win runs.

There’s no grace period with the first time head man here – Troy needs to go bowling with this bunch.

Troy Trojans Preview 2022: Offense

The new coaching staff and offense will try to crank up the passing game a bit. Last year’s offense was 109th in the nation averaging just 338 yards and 23 points per game, with the biggest problems the lack of a steady running attack and a downfield passing game that wasn’t there.

Offensive coordinator Joe Craddock will do more with the tight ends, will look to get more out of the line, and it should all kick in with ten starters expected to be back and part of the mix.

Can Gunnar Watson start to push the ball down the field more? The quarterback gig is all his with Taylor Powell transferring to Eastern Michigan, but he has to do a whole lot more after throwing eight touchdown passes and four picks in the rotation.

The top deep threat Luke Whittemore is gone, but leading receiver Tez Johnson is back after making 67 catches for 735 yards and four scores, to go along with Jabre Barber and Deshon Stoudemire back in the mix, too.

Again, the tight ends should be more involved. Seven are on the roster with Deyunkrea Lewis the leader of the lot with three touchdown catches last year.

The offensive line wasn’t all that awful in pass protection, but it has to be far, far stronger for the running game. Four starters are back with Logan Self expected to step in at center after serving as the top backup last year. Left tackle Austin Stidham is the best all-star blocker of a deep group.

The running backs are there. Kimani Vidal led the team with 696 yards and five scores averaging 4.6 yards per carry, and Jamontez Woods is a good back around the goal line averaging over five yards per carry with a team-high six touchdown runs.

Troy Trojans Preview 2022: Defense

The defense did what it could to keep the team in games. The pass rush was the best in the Sun Belt, the turnovers followed, and the D overall finished as the second-best in the league.

Seven starters and plenty of all-stars are in place for new defensive coordinator Sheil Wood, who comes in from Army – his main job is to not screw everything up.

The main pass rushers are back. Javon Solomon is back after coming up with 11 sacks and 17 tackles for loss, and backup Bandit Richard Jibunor was second on the team with eight sacks and ten tackles for loss. They’re on the outside, and Second Team All-Sun Belt star Will Choloh is back as a dangerous veteran interior pass rusher.

The pass rush also comes from the linebacking corps. Carlton Martial continues to be one of the best all-around players in the Sun Belt – he led the team with 127 tackles from his spot in the middle – and KJ Robertson came up with 65 stops on the outside. The Trojans also get plenty of plays from …

The secondary can hit. There aren’t the all-stars like there are on the front six, but TJ Harris and is a good tackler at the Spear position – he earned Third Team All-Sun Belt honors finishing third on the team in tackles – and the corners are deep and good enough.

Georgia State vs Troy Game Preview

Why Troy Will Win

Troy will be playing to extend its season.

Georgia State already has bowl eligibility wrapped up. Troy lost its last two games – it happened to play the two best teams in the Sun Belt, Louisiana and Appalachian State – and it lost three of its last four games.

The Troy pass rush continues to be great, the defense has the ability to take the ball away in bunches – five takeaways in the last two games – and the offensive side has the ability to crank up the passing game.

Georgia State’s secondary gives up over 200 yards for breakfast – it allowed 230 passing yards or more in each of the last eight games.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Georgia State Will Win

Troy is going through a wee bit of a transition.

The team is still in the hunt for a bowl game, it happened to lose to the two stars of the Sun Belt – and to Coastal Carolina within the last month – and head coach Chip Lindsey was sacked.

Georgia State is playing well. It pushed Louisiana in a tough 21-17 loss, and that’s the only loss in the last six games with a strong win at Coastal Carolina right after.

The running game has been fantastic – averaging 222 yards per game – and it should do something new and control the game. The Panthers are normally awful in the time of possession battle, but that’s not a problem against a Troy team that keeps the ball for just over 27 minutes a game.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia State is playing too well.

Troy might be more emotional and more desperate, but it’s not going to matter with the Georgia State offense getting its running game going and the defensive front allowing fewer than 100 rushing yards.

It’ll be a good battle, but Georgia State will be come up with two late scoring drives to get by in the home finale.

Appalachian State vs Troy Game Preview

Why Appalachian State Will Win

The Mountaineers can take the Sun Belt East title with a win, or a win next week over Georgia Southern, or with a Georgia State loss and a Coastal Carolina loss and …

They’re almost certainly going to end up getting a rematch with Louisiana for the Sun Belt title. To get there after this week, the running game has to get back on track after struggling in the win over South Alabama.

They’re great at controlling the clock, and they should be able to do that against this Troy team that has the ball for around 28 minutes per game. Run, get to 200 yards on the ground like it did five times so far, or at least be balanced.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Troy Will Win

The Troy defensive front doesn’t mess around.

Okay, so Louisiana ran for 204 yards in its win over the Trojans last week, and Coastal Carolina ran for over 200 a few weeks before, but the Troy defensive front lives in the backfield.

It’s among the best in the nation at generating sacks, and the run D kept most teams to under 100 yards until the last few weeks. Offensively, the passing attack should be able to keep up with 250 or more passing yards and …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Appalachian State is going to run.

Troy needs this to go bowling, but it’s going to have to get it done next week at Georgia State – that’s not going to be any easier.

The Mountaineers will get stuffed enough early on to have to push – the Trojan defensive front will be a problem – but the breakthrough runs will come in the second half.

Louisiana vs Troy Game Preview

Why Louisiana Will Win

The Ragin’ Cajuns already have the Sun Belt West locked up along with a bowl bid, but they have a shot for more than that.

If they win out and take the Sun Belt title, they might be a Cincinnati loss from being deep in the hunt for a New Year’s Six bid.

For now, they just need to be sharper.

Yeah, they’re winning, but too many games are a fight. They’re used to close battles, and this should be that against a Troy team with a good enough defense to be nasty.

However, Louisiana has the offense that can control the clock. It does all the little things right – it doesn’t turn the ball over, the punting game is solid, and the defense holds up when it has to.

Troy doesn’t have a big-time offense, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Troy Will Win

The Trojan defense continues to hold up just fine.

This might not be a high-powered team, but it’s able stop the run, the D gets off the field on third downs, and the pass rush is enough to be a bother for a Ragin’ Cajun offense that’s used to owning the offensive front.

This is big for Troy. With Appalachian State and a trip to Georgia State to close, getting bowl eligible now would be a big deal, and …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a bit of an inconsistent Troy team that doesn’t have the pop to keep up if Louisiana gets off to a hot start, but at home, the D will come through.

The Ragin’ Cajuns have a weird way of rising up and rocking – like with the destruction of Appalachian State and blowouts over Ohio and Texas State – but those are at home.

The Trojans have won three of their last four – the only loss was at Coastal Carolina – and they’ll hang on for dear life in the final moments to get their best win of the year.

South Alabama vs Troy Game Preview

Why South Alabama Will Win

Can the Jaguars finally put it all together to get the one win to get bowl eligible?

It’s not hard. They win when the offense is great, the lose when it isn’t.

They got through the first three games against awful teams to build up a 3-0 start, and since then when they get to 420 yards or more, they win, when they don’t they lose.

That’s going to be tough against the Troy defense, but as long as the passing game can keep things moving, the defense should be able to take care of the rest.

The Jaguars are great defensively on third downs, they’re amazing at controlling the clock, and they have to not freak out when the running game doesn’t work a lick because …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Troy Will Win

Troy’s run defense is terrific, and that’s partially because the pass rush is among the best in the country. The South Alabama offensive line is good in pass protection, but it’s not good enough to deal with what’s coming.

The deadly combination of Javon Solomon and Richard Jibunor are too good and too relentless for the nation’s leading team in tackles for loss and isn’t far off in sacks.

The offense has enough balance and versatility to keep everything moving, but it’s that defensive front that has to take over right away and get the Jaguar O off the field.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

This should be fun.

South Alabama will throw well enough, and then the Troy defense will clamp down with that pass rush.

The South Alabama pass rush will be a killer, too.

The Trojans need to generate the takeaways that turn games around, but the Jaguars are just as good at forcing mistakes.

This will be a dead even, fun game that hangs on whose defense can do just a little bit more.

At home, Troy will get it done with one late stop.

Coastal Carolina vs Troy Game Preview

Why Troy Will Win

What did Appalachian State do that was so right in the win over Coastal Carolina?

It got off to a hot start, it was more physical on the offensive line and ran well, and the defensive front was able to get out on the Chanticleer playmakers in open space and swarm, holding the O to just 55 rushing yards.

Troy has to run well right away. It’s coming off its best running day of its season with 200 yards in the win over Texas State.

The defense is No. 1 in the nation in both sacks and tackles for loss – it can get into the backfield and bother the Coastal Carolina running game before it gets started.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Troy hasn’t seen anything like this.

It had to deal with the Liberty offense and all of its playmakers – and held up reasonably well – but it was still a 21-13 loss.

Appalachian State played as well as could be asked for in the win over the Chanticleers, and it was still close in a 30-27 fight.

It took a monster offensive performance from the Mountaineers, and Troy doesn’t have that much firepower. There’s not much from the ground attack and there’s nothing happening with the passing game down the field.

The Trojan D might be great, but get down early, and forget it.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Coastal Carolina will bounce back fast.

The speed of the Chanticleer offense will offset the Trojan pass a wee bit, and there won’t be enough turnovers to matter.

Troy takes the ball away a ton thanks to it pressure, but Coastal Carolina’s offense will be efficient and won’t screw this up after a great first quarter.

Troy vs Texas State Game Preview

Why Troy Will Win

Can the Troy defense continue to take the ball away?

It’s been a weird season with a 13-point loss to ULM and a nine-point loss to South Carolina. When the defense comes up with a slew of takeaways, good things happen.

The Trojans generated seven turnovers in the three wins, came up with three more in the close loss to South Carolina that should’ve been a blowout, and there was just one takeaway in the other two losses.

Texas State has turned the ball over way too much with nine giveaways, and Troy needs the big defensive plays because …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas State Will Win

The Troy offense has been stunningly bad.

The running game isn’t doing enough – even though it finally started to work a wee bit over the last two weeks – it still has yet to hit 150 yards against any FBS team, and the passing attack isn’t high-powered enough to make up for it.

The Trojans put up 55 on Southern in the opener and hasn’t hit 28 points since. Considering the Texas State defense has been blasted at times – and allowed 132 points over the last three games – this should be a relative break.

The Bobcats have hardly been consistent offensively, but at least they’re scoring. And …

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The defense is taking the ball away, too.

For all of the problems with giveaways, Texas State is able to force a ton of mistakes with three takeaways in three of the last four games.

Both teams are going to make mistakes – set the over/under on turnovers between the two teams at 5.5 – but Texas State’s errors will be a wee bit bigger in a low scoring fight.

Troy Trojans College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense didn’t do enough and was way too inconsistent. There were too many turnovers, the downfield passing game was missing, and the ground game averaged just 103 yards per game. However, depending on the alignment, 11 starters are expected to be back with a few key transfers coming in to raise the overall talent level.

QB Gunnar Watson was fine. He hit 70% of his passes for over 2,000 yards with 16 touchdowns, but he threw six picks, and Jacob Free wasn’t a whole lot stronger. Missouri’s Taylor Powell is coming in to add an interesting option to the mix.

No matter who’s throwing, the receiving corps is there to improve the passing game with three super-seniors in Kaylon Geiger, Reggie Todd and Tray Eafford back – they were the team’s three top targets last year. The backs can catch, too.

BJ Smith is a solid all-around back who’s back for his sixth year. He ran for 1,186 yards and 13 scores as a junior, was banged up in 2019, and wasn’t able to do much on the ground last year, but he caught 26 passes.

Freshman Kimani Vidal led the team with 516 yards and four scores – averaging five yards per carry – and the depth is there with Jamontez Woods and DK Billingsley are back. Also coming in is La’Damian Webb, a good recruit for Florida State who ran for 366 yards and three scores last year.

Now the O line has to do its job. All five starters are back around All-Sun Belt left tackle Austin Stidham, but there’s not a ton of size and the production has to be there. It wasn’t bad at keeping teams out of the backfield, but it struggled for the ground game.
