Chiefs OL Trey Smith has NFL’s longest snap streak without allowing a sack

#Chiefs OL Trey Smith has the NFL’s longest streak of snaps played without allowing a sack.

Protecting Patrick Mahomes is paramount to the Kansas City Chiefs’ success on offense, and one of the team’s linemen has done a particularly outstanding job of keeping the reigning MVP on his feet.
Third-year guard Trey Smith currently holds the NFL’s longest snap streak without allowing a sack.

Smith’s efforts in pass protection have been the stuff of legend among Chiefs fans who remember how Kansas City’s depleted depth up front arguably cost the team a win in Super Bowl LV.
The Chiefs’ investment in the offensive line has helped keep Kansas City’s air attack afloat since 2021 when the team signed veteran guard Joe Thuney and drafted Smith and center Creed Humphrey.
The talented trio on the interior of the Chiefs’ line has become one of the most recognizable groups in the NFL, and with any luck, will continue to keep Mahomes clean in the pocket for years to come.

Chiefs guards Joe Thuney, Trey Smith combine for impressive streak

#Chiefs guards Joe Thuney and Trey Smith share exceptional pass blocking streaks that have made them major assets in Andy Reid’s offense.

The Kansas City Chiefs offensive line is a talented bunch of experienced veterans, and with Super Bowl rings to show for their accomplishments, it is no wonder that guards Joe Thuney and Trey Smith have set themselves apart on the stat sheet in 2023.

The impenetrable tandem has become the only two players in the NFL with an active streak of 270 pass-blocking snaps without allowing a sack. This is a good indication of the duo’s effectiveness through six games of the season and should be a good omen for Patrick Mahomes’ health moving into the meat of the Chiefs’ 2023 schedule.

Kansas City’s offensive line got off to a shaky start in September, but with the help of Thuney and Smith, seem to have gotten back on track in recent weeks to become a significant asset for Andy Reid’s air attack.

Now, the pair of guards will just need to maintain their level of play to help push the reigning MVP to new heights in Kansas City’s Week 7 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Chiefs guard Trey Smith: Backup offensive line ‘doing a great job’

Trey Smith heaped praise on the #Chiefs’ backup offensive line during his comments to the media after Kansas City’s win over the #Cardinals.

With a reigning MVP to protect in the pocket, the Kansas City Chiefs offensive line has its hands full ahead of the 2023 season.

Perhaps no player knows how important the unit’s job is better than guard Trey Smith, who has risen to prominence as a key cog in the line’s rotation since joining the Chiefs in 2021. He spoke to reporters after Kansas City’s win over the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday and told the media that the second-team lineman has been excelling in the preseason with the help of two coaches.

“They’ve been doing a great job,” Smith explained. “It’s a testament to what (Chiefs offensive line coach Andy) Heck and (Chiefs assistant offensive line coach Corey) Matthaei have been coaching. It’s also a testament to those guys being prepared to go. When they were playing physical, they were doing some really good things on the field.”

Smith and his cohorts on the Chiefs’ front-five will need to keep up their intensity ahead of the 2023 regular season when Kansas City will look to defend their Super Bowl LVII title.

Top quotes from Chiefs’ August 9 post-practice press conference

Check out some of the top quotes from the #Chiefs’ post-practice press conference on August 9:

The Kansas City Chiefs were back on the field. Still, they were forced inside due to inclement weather on Wednesday. They carried on without fans attending training camp, entirely focused on this Sunday’s preseason opener while at Missouri Western State University. Four Chiefs got in front of the podium for the team’s post-practice press conference, and each answered reporters’ questions about everything leading to this weekend’s matchup.

Matt Nagy, Skyy Moore, Trey Smith, and Keondre Coburn spoke to reporters and provided valuable insight into their thoughts on training camp, teammates, and more.

The battle in the trenches during training camp pushes both the offensive and defensive lines to be better. The Kansas City Chiefs have fortified both sides of their lines making competition intense as each player looks to prove their superiority.

Guard Trey Smith has garnered a reputation for being aggressive in his blocking and quickly gained respect from his teammates for his efforts to protect Patrick Mahomes. The third-year player spoke with reporters on Wednesday following indoor practice to praise rookie defensive lineman Keondre Coburn’s work ethic in camp.

“Yeah, I’ve gone against Keondre (Coburn) a couple of times. I love Keondre,” Smith explained. “[He is] amazing. He’s a great dude, fun to be around, extremely hard worker. We only disagree about Tennessee and Texas. Which one’s going to be the real ‘UT’? So we talked about that every day. But [I] love playing with him.”

The teammates have formed a bond through their college rivalry as Smith reminded reporters Tennessee is the “real” orange.

“I mean, he’s just doing a good job, man. Just doing whatever they ask of him.” said Smith, “A lot of is a big effort guy really gotta utilize his hands as being vital when he rushes.”

The Chiefs haven’t announced who will be starting and how long their stints will be for this Sunday, but the work is still getting done in camp by the team’s impact players.

Chiefs Trey Smith focused on consistency in 2023

Kansas City #Chiefs guard Trey Smith is focused on better consistency in 2023, hoping to repeat as a Super Bowl champion. | from: @EdEastonJr

The opportunity to improve is one of the many elements that makes training camp important for players after a long offseason, and the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to implement new strategies to develop their young talent in St. Joseph.

The team has been thrilled with the progress of guard Trey Smith since drafting him in 2021 after seeing him become a mainstay on their offensive line. Smith’s physicality and attention to detail made him one of the biggest steals of his draft class, and his presence immediately furthered their goal of revamping the team’s front five to better protect Patrick Mahomes and improve their running game.

Now that Smith is established in the league, the last piece of the equation to better his game will be finding consistency over the course of the season. He spoke to the media after practice on Friday, sharing his thoughts on improvement to that end, and explaining the standards he sets for himself.

“[The] measure my gameplay and who I am as a player ultimately depends on how well I do day in and day out,” Smith said. “The feedback I get from my coaches are obviously a ‘Good job’ or ‘Hey you have to do this better.’ But ultimately, I think the best way for me to measure this year is consistency. How consistent can I [be]; how effective can I be at getting my job done on a consistent basis. That’s what I’m looking for out of myself, way more consistency this year.”

Smith’s desire for self-improvement is a great sign for the Chiefs as they look to continue their constant improvement while training camp rolls on at Missouri Western State University. Watch for Smith to elevate his game with each practice, and with any luck, for him to become one of Kansas City’s steadiest presences on the offensive line during the 2023 season.

Chiefs guard Trey Smith excited to don pads for first time since Super Bowl LVII

#Chiefs guard Trey Smith spoke about putting on pads for the first time since Super Bowl LVII after practice on Friday.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ intensity at training camp took another step up on Friday as the team conducted their first practice in pads. The addition of the protective equipment under their uniforms will allow for physicality during workouts as the Chiefs continue to get in shape before their first preseason game in August.

Friday’s practice was circled on the calendars of many players, but Kansas City’s linemen in particular, for that reason. The most anticipatory of any Chiefs lineman was guard Trey Smith, according to his teammate Creed Humphrey who spoke on the matter during his comments to reporters earlier in the week.

Smith is well-known for being a physical presence on the team’s offensive line and spoke with the media on Friday about his mindset now that he is finally able to get rough with Kansas City’s front four in practice.

Said Smith: “You know, the first time you put on the pads, obviously, you’re still a little bit rusty. Someone made a comment earlier; the last time we really put in pads was during the Super Bowl. I was like, dang, it’s been a while.

“So, you know, you have some things that you got to clean up, some things you can be a little bit tighter, technique-wise, but it’s always good to put the pads back on. It’s always good knowing the [regular season is] around the corner.”

Smith and his teammates had a life-changing experience during their last time in pads when they earned Kansas City its third Super Bowl title back in February.

Hopefully, the work that they started on Friday will help them achieve their ultimate goal of winning yet another ring and ending the 2023 season covered in championship confetti once more.
