WR Michael Wilson will be important in Cardinals vs. Packers

The Green Bay Packers will need to stop Arizona Cardinals WR Wilson in NFL week 6, and that’s not easy thing to do.

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson had five catches for 78 yards in a team win last Sunday. The Green Bay Packers will need to account for Wilson on intermediate routes, and that’s not easy thing to do.

At 6-foot-2 inches, Wilson is a tall target for quarterback Kyler Murray to locate outside the hashes. Wilson brings energy and talent and has been even more vital with wide receiver Zay Jones injured.

Three primary targets have been in rotation for Murray; Marvin Harrison Jr., Wilson, and tight-end Trey McBride. Murray is distributing the ball effortlessly, and Wilson is thriving under offensive coordinator Drew Petzing.

Wilson can expect additional targets in week six because the Packers’ secondary will be focused on Harrison Jr. If Wilson plays well tomorrow, it will definitely increase the chances of a Cardinals’ win.

TE Trey McBride, 2 49ers players fined for incident in Cardinals’ Week 5 win

Why Cardinals TE Trey McBride and two 49er players were fined for the same play from Sunday’s 24-23 win

The NFL has fined three players for a play that occurred in last Sunday’s Arizona Cardinals’ 24-23 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

On a play that began with 1:33 remaining in the third quarter, quarterback Kyler Murray completed a seven-yard pass to the right side of the field on first-and-10 to wide receiver Greg Dortch.

As the play was ending, tight end Trey McBride was blocking 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward, who was trying to fight off McBride.

It continued out of bounds on the 49ers sideline and at one point Ward grabbed McBride’s facemask. When they finally separated, injured linebacker Dre Greenlaw came in and pushed McBride into a table that had a water bucket which was knocked over and spilled the contents.

The NFL’s answer Saturday was fines for each player:

  • $9,545 to McBride for unsportsmanlike conduct.
  • $11,255 to Ward for unnecessary roughness (facemask).
  • $14,069 to Greenlaw for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Greenlaw is currently on the reserve/physically unable to perform list after suffering a ruptured Achilles while running onto the field in the second quarter of the team’s Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs last February.

McBride told Cards Wire he has already appealed the fine.

Will Cardinals QB Kyler Murray make Swiss cheese of the Packers?

Instead of bathing in accolades, the Green Bay Packers need to prepare for the dual-threat ability of Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray.

Sure, the Packers have shown strength on defense this season but not versus a quarterback with dynamics like Murray. Packers’ defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley will be forced to make a business decision in Week 6. Hafley will either (1) have to play man coverage to account for the scramble, or/and (2) frequent in some disguise zone to confuse Murray on passing downs.

Murray is averaging 10.7 yards per carry this season and his 50-yard touchdown run last weekend sent a power rush through the Cardinals’ locker room. Unlike in years under former coach Kliff Kingsbury, Murray is operating in a much more balanced and traditional offensive system. 12 personnel packages and heavier doses of run are allowing Murray to settle into the flow of the game.

Murray is building chemistry with wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and tight end Trey McBride, two pass-catchers the Packers don’t necessarily have an answer for.

Lastly, with All-Pro Jaire Alexander hindered by a groin injury, it’s unclear as to why NFL analysts don’t like Murray and the Cardinals’ chances in week 6.

Cardinals RB James Conner left his footprints at Levi’s Stadium

Arizona Cardinals RB James Conner put his foot down versus the NFC West rival San Francisco 49ers.

Levi’s Stadium turned into a stomping ground for Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner this past Sunday.

Conner, who tallied 86 yards on 19 carries versus the San Francisco 49ers, possesses a physicality and tenacity needed in a Cardinals locker room long associated with being soft. Perhaps Conner can rewrite that narrative in 2024.

Head Coach Jonathan Gannon knows that the success of the Cardinals’ ground game will only open up throwing lanes for tight-end Trey McBride and rookie Marvin Harrison Jr., but what if Conner’s success on the ground has even greater implications?

Conner is averaging 4.6 yards per carry on the season and has already recorded two 100-plus yard games. Thus, the Cardinals shouldn’t get too fanciful in their desire to pass the ball with quarterback Kyler Murray, but rather leave it up to Conner to dictate their offensive tempo.

With Conner optimized, the Cardinals can strategize by sustaining offensive drives and nullify opponents ability to run by establishing scoring leads. With this formula, the Cardinals and Conner could potential leave a trail of footprints headed directly to the top of the NFC West.

Trey McBride, George Kittle injury update, availability in Week 5 Cardinals vs. 49ers

ESPN’s Adam Schefter gives an update about whether or not Trey McBride and George Kittle will play in Week 5.

The top tight ends for both the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers enter the Week 5 divisional showdown between the two teams questionable to play.

Both are expected to play, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

McBride returns to the lineup after missing the Cardinals’ 42-14 loss to the Washington Commanders in Week 4. He was out with a concussion. He cleared concussion protocol at the end of the week and had no injury destination on the final injury report of the week, but was downgraded Saturday when an injury to his ribs came up.

In three games this season, McBride has 14 receptions for 122 yards.

Kittle was also questionable to play with a rib injury. He is also expected to suit up. He has missed one game this season. In three games played, he has 15 receptions for 162 yards and two touchdowns.

The Cardinals and 49ers kick off from Levi’s Stadium at 1:05 p.m. Arizona time.

Trey McBride’s availability in question with rib injury

The Cardinals downgraded him from having no injury designation to being questionable with an injury to his ribs.

Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride appeared set to play on Sunday in Week 5 after missing Week 4 in concussion protocol. That might have changed. While he has cleared concussion protocol, the Cardinals downgraded McBride to questionable for the game with an injury to his ribs.

McBride was a full participant in practice on Friday but must have had something come up with his ribs afterward.

He apparently traveled with the team so his still could play, but with new NFL rules about injury reporting, they had to disclose it.

In three games this season, McBride has 14 receptions for 122 yards. In his absence last week, the Cardinals suffered their worst loss under head coach Jonathan Gannon, a 42-14 defeat to the Washington Commanders.

The Cardinals and 49ers kick off Sunday at 1:05 p.m. Arizona time.

Will Trey McBride’s return help jump start Cardinals’ offense?

The Cardinals missed McBride in their Week 4 loss.

The Arizona Cardinals offense struggled in last Sunday’s 42-14 loss to the Washington Commanders and the absence of tight end Trey McBride can’t be overlooked.

McBride suffered a concussion in the Week 3 game against the Lions when cornerback Brian Branch led with his helmet on a tackle. Branch was fined $10,128 and also suffered a concussion. He began practicing during the ensuing week, but was then declared out of Detroit’s Monday night game against Seattle with what was said to be an illness.

McBride admitted to having a “a rough week” after the hit, but has now cleared the concussion protocol and head coach Jonathan Gannon said he’s “good to go” for Sunday’s game against the 49ers.

Earlier the week, when asked how much the offense missed him, Gannon said, “He’s just a really good player out of the lineup. He does a lot for us in the run and pass game, so anytime you don’t have one of your better players out there, it hurts the unit. I thought guys responded the right way, but it’ll be good to get Trey back.”

Quarterback Kyler Murray said “it’s huge” that McBride will be play.

“I think we missed him last week,” Murray said. “Just having him out there, another playmaker, another guy that gets the job done no matter what. His confidence is going to continue to grow, so I’m definitely excited to have him back out there.”

One other note on Branch. We reported on Saturday that he was also fined another $10,128 in the game against the Cardinals for striking/kicking/kneeing a player thought to be tight end Tip Reiman on a 42-yard field goal by Matt Prater.

Reiman confirmed to Cards Wire that he was the victim. Branch was rushing on the attempt and Reiman, who was on the wing on left side of the line blocked him and pushed him. Then, well, after the play, Branch slapped Reiman in the head. There was no penalty on either of Branch’s infractions, but league review levied the fines.

49ers will need an answer for Cardinals WR Marvin Harrison Jr.

The Arizona Cardinals should feel comfortable challenging the 49ers in 1-on-1 situations with WR Marvin Harrison Jr.

Arizona Cardinals rookie wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. wasn’t satisfied with his outing in Week 4, nor the added loss to his team’s season record of 1-3.

Fueled by redemption and the NFC West rivalry with the San Francisco 49ers, quarterback Kyler Murray will be looking to target Harrison more often in Week 5.

The Niners defense hasn’t been invincible like in years past. The Minnesota Vikings scorched them for 403 total yards in week 2, and the Los Angeles Rams rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns versus them in week 3.

Moreover, Murray’s scramble ability will force the Niners linebackers out of zone coverage, which should allow passing lanes for Marvin Harrison Jr. and tight end Trey McBride. Furthermore, unless Niners defensive back Charvarius Ward becomes Superman overnight, the Cardinals should feel comfortable challenging him in one-on-one situations with Harrison.

If the Cardinals can start fast and keep the 49ers on their heels, they should be able to dictate the tempo of this game and regain ground in the NFC West.

Cardinals TE Trey McBride injury update, return from concussion protocol

McBride was set to return to practice on Wednesday.

Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride was missed in Week 4 as he was unavailable, going through the league concussion protocol for the injury he suffered in the fourth quarter of their game in Week 3.

He is on track to play in Week 5 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon told reporters Wednesday morning that McBride was coming out of protocol and would be out there for Wednesday’s practice.

The first injury report of the week will come out Wednesday afternoon.  We will see whether or not he is limited at practice to start the week.

Gannon also said that defensive lineman Khyiris Tonga, who missed the game with a knee injury, would also return to practice.

Trey McBride injury update after missing Week 4 loss to Commanders

A look at where he is after missing Week 4 with a concussion.

The Arizona Cardinals missed tight end Trey McBride on Sunday, who missed the game recovering from a concussion he suffered in the fourth quarter of their game in Week 3 against the Detroit Lions.

He did not practice all last week.

Head coach gave a small update about McBride on Monday, saying that he is still in concussion protocol.

“I would say yes, but he did a good job last week,” he told reporters. “(He) wasn’t able to play and we thought that was kind of the smart thing to do, obviously with how the protocol works, but it’s just looking good.”

He was missed as Elijah Higgins, starting in his place, only caught two passes for 12 yards.

The Cardinals’ first practice of Week 5 is on Wednesday. We will see what his status is then and whether he practices at all, is limited or is a full go.
