Report: Titans’ Brett Kern expected to be available for Week 17

While the Titans might have their punter, things aren’t looking as good for their kicker.

The Tennessee Titans placed punter Brett Kern on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Tuesday, but it appears he might suit up against the Houston Texans in Week 17 after all.

According to Justin Melo of Broadway Sports, Kern is considered a close contact and has not tested positive for the virus up until this point, which puts him on track to return to the team on Saturday and play on Sunday.

Kern’s placement on the list came one day after kicker Stephen Gostkowski was also placed there. It hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it’s very possible that Gostkowski was the person Kern came in close contact with.

If Gostkowski did indeed test positive for the virus, he will definitely miss Sunday’s contest.

On Wednesday, head coach Mike Vrabel didn’t give a timetable for the return of either player when speaking to the media before practice.

Should Kern and/or Gostkowski not suit up, the Titans have punter Trevor Daniel and kicker Sam Sloman on the practice squad, both of whom have been protected for this week.

Daniel has appeared in two games with the Titans in 2020, while Sloman played in seven contests for the Los Angeles Rams earlier this season.

The Titans will hope at least one of their specialists will take the field when they play the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium in what is a crucial game for Tennessee’s AFC South and playoff hopes.

Titans place Adam Humphries on IR, Trevor Daniel on COVID-19 list

Humphries will now miss at least the next three games.

The Tennessee Titans announced a pair of roster moves on Tuesday, including placing Adam Humphries on Injured Reserve.

According to John Glennon of Broadway Sports, Humphries’ trip to IR is related to a concussion he suffered in Week 8 against the Cincinnati Bengals, which forced him to miss four games.

Humphries passed the concussion protocol ahead of Week 13 and suited up against the Cleveland Browns. He reeled in one of four targets for nine yards but had a costly drop that resulted in an interception.

With this trip to IR, Humphries will miss at least the next three games but can return for the regular-season finale versus the Houston Texans.

Since joining the Titans in 2019, Humphries has had issues staying on the field. He missed six games (including playoffs) in his first season in Nashville and will now miss at least eight in 2020.

Tennessee’s wideout also missed one game when he was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list in October.

In addition to the move to place Humphries on IR, the Titans added practice squad punter Trevor Daniel to the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Titans make yet another puzzling decision at punter

The Titans are making all the wrong moves at punter lately.

The Tennessee Titans are promoting Trevor Daniel to the team’s 53-man roster and adding Ryan Allen to the practice squad — and yes, you read that correctly.

Daniel got the nod in Week 10 over Allen, which at the time didn’t make much sense considering Allen was brilliant in place of Brett Kern in Week 9 when he averaged 50.5 yards per punt.

The move proved to be disastrous, as Daniel rewarded the Titans by shanking one punt, and he had another blocked. Both plays led to Indianapolis Colts touchdowns and were instrumental in the Titans’ meltdown.

Just a few days ago, these two punters’ roles were reversed, as Allen was on the active roster and Daniel was on the practice squad, which is the way it should have remained, with Allen getting the nod in Week 11.

Instead, Daniel, who was a major cause of the Titans’ Week 10 loss to the Colts, has been promoted, while Allen, who actually had success in live game action in Week 9, was released and ends up on the practice squad.

When asked about the inexplicable decision to start Daniel over Allen last week, head coach Mike Vrabel pointed to the former’s success in practice as being the reason.

After this recent move that seems to indicate Daniel will get the start once again, it’s clear he must be the greatest practice punter of all time.

You simply can’t make up the lack of logic in the Titans’ recent moves at the position, whether you want to talk about replacing Allen with Daniel for Week 10, or shuffling the two on the roster.

Titans’ Mike Vrabel addresses current punter situation

Head coach Mike Vrabel shared his thoughts on the Titans’ current situation at punter.

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the situation at punter on Wednesday in the wake of Trevor Daniel’s disastrous Week 10 performance and the team’s decision to release Ryan Allen on Tuesday.

Daniel was inexplicably inserted into the starting role last Thursday night in place of Allen after the latter was excellent in Week 9 against the Chicago Bears.

Vrabel’s reasoning for making the move? Daniel out-performed Allen in practice during the week.

The move proved to be a blunder, as Daniel went on to shank one punt, and had another one blocked, which wasn’t his fault. Still, the shank gave the Colts great field position for one of their scores.

Despite Daniel’s struggles, Vrabel expressed confidence in the punter, per Erik Bacharach of the Tennessean:

“One punt is not going to define Trevor. We believe in him,” Vrabel said.

As far as Allen is concerned, Vrabel said the team could look to add him to the practice squad, which we would assume could lead to a punter competition during the week.

However, as we discovered last week, the player who performs better in practice isn’t always the best choice. Allen’s success in actual game action should have made this a no-brainer from the start.

Titans release punter Ryan Allen in puzzling move

This move by the Titans doesn’t make much sense.

The Tennessee Titans announced on Tuesday that they have parted ways with punter Ryan Allen, who filled in for injured punter Brett Kern during the team’s Week 9 victory over the Chicago Bears.

In that game, Allen punted eight teams for an average of 50.5 yards per punt, with a long of 65 yards. The only thing more shocking than Allen not getting the nod once again in Week 10 is this move to release him.

Instead of not trying to fix something that wasn’t broken by deploying Allen against the Indianapolis Colts, the Titans inexplicably turned to practice squad punter Trevor Daniel.

The reason? He was better in practice. The result? disaster.

Daniel went on to have a brutal game, as he shanked one punt that set the Colts up for an easy scoring drive, and had another blocked that was returned for a touchdown by Indy.

And for that effort, it looks like Daniel will get the punting duties once again, with Kern set to miss at least one more game on IR. You simply cannot make this stuff up.

There is no amount of success Daniel can have in Week 11 against the Baltimore Ravens that will ever logically justify this move.

Titans’ Mike Vrabel explains decision to switch punters for Week 10

The Titans made a puzzling decision to switch punters in Week 10, and it cost them dearly.

With punter Brett Kern injured and on IR, the Tennessee Titans turned to fellow punter Ryan Allen in Week 9, who promptly rewarded them with an impressive performance against the Chicago Bears that saw him average 50.5 yards per punt, with a long of 65.

However, in Week 10, the Titans made the puzzling decision to elevate recently-signed punter Trevor Daniel from the practice squad and start him over Allen, which is the definition of over-thinking things.

Daniel went on to have a disastrous night, as he shanked one punt and then had another blocked. Those two plays changed the course of the game, as Indianapolis was able to turn both into touchdowns.

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel explained what went into the decision after the 34-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, per Emily Proud of WKRN:

“The process is what happens in practice and we did what we feel like was best for the team,” Vrabel said. “That’s the decision that we made.”

And it’s a decision that might have cost the Titans an important divisional game. I think it’s safe to say that we’ll see Allen return to the starting role when the Titans travel to Baltimore to take on the Ravens in Week 10.

Watch: Indianapolis Colts block punt, return it for touchdown

The Colts took advantage of poor punting by the Titans to score two touchdowns in less than a minute.

Troy Aikman said it best Thursday, “Somewhere Pat McAfee is cringing.

That’s because the third punter this season for the TenneseeTitans, Trevor Daniel, had a nightmare third quarter against McAfee’s former team, the Indianapolis Colts.

First, the former FedEx driver Daniel shanked a punt that went 17 yards and turned into a Colts’ TD drive.

George Walker IV / Tennessean.com

On the Titans’ next possession, Indianapolis stormed through the Titans’ line, E.J. Speed blocked the Daniel punt and T.J. Carrie ran it a yard into the end zone for a 27-17 lead after the PAT.

The two scores happened within a span of 54 seconds.

Tennessee Titans hold tryouts with 4 punters ahead of Week 9

A Tennessee native is among the four punters the Titans are trying out.

With the status of punter Brett Kern up in the air for Week 9, the Tennessee Titans are taking a look at four punters via tryouts.

Per the league’s transactions wire, the Titans are worked out punters Ryan Allen, Dustin Colquitt, Lachlan Edwards and Trevor Daniel.

This would seem to indicate that the Titans are expecting Kern to miss time with a hand injury he suffered following a botched snap on an extra point attempt during the Week 8 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

On Monday, Titans beat writer Paul Kuharsky reported that Kern “will miss time” with his injury, although it isn’t clear exactly how much.

Head coach Mike Vrabel told the media that Kern would undergo tests on Monday to determine the extent of his injury. We haven’t gotten any new information since he made that statement.

The Titans do have an in-house option in rookie kicker Tucker McCann, who handled kicking and punting duties in his final season at Missouri, but he has zero NFL experience.

All four of the aforementioned punters have NFL experience, with Colquitt, who is a native of Tennessee and attended both high school and college (University of Tennessee) in the state, leading the way with 16 seasons.

The veteran is a two-time Pro Bowler (2012 and 2016) and most recently played with the Pittsburgh Steelers this season before getting cut last month. He spent his first 15 seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Edwards and Allen have four and seven years of experience, respectively, and Daniel, who is also a Tennessee native and played his high school and college ball in the state, has just 18 career games under his belt. Neither of these three players have taken a snap in 2020, though.

Broncos cut two players before NFL Draft

The Broncos parted ways with two players on the day of the NFL Draft.

Congratulations, Sam Martin, you’ve won the Denver Broncos’ punting job by default!

The Broncos released Colby Wadman and Trevor Daniel on Wednesday, according to KOA Radio’s Brandon Krisztal. That leaves Martin as the only punter remaining on Denver’s roster.

Wadman served as the Broncos’ punter for 12 games in 2018 and all 16 games in 2019, averaging 44.4 yards per punt with a net average of 39.4 yards per boot.

Martin signed a three-year, $7.05 million deal with Denver during free agency. Earning an average of $2.35 million per season made Martin the clear favorite to win the punting job.

In eight seasons with the Detroit Lions, Martin averaged 46 yards per punt with a net average of 41 yards per punt. Martin also handled kickoff duties in Detroit but Brandon McManus is expected to continue kicking off for the Broncos.

Denver has 10 picks to use in the draft and the team will also want to sign 7-9 college free agents after the draft so cutting Wadman and Daniel to create more room on the roster was a logical decision.

Trevor Daniel signs with Denver

Trevor Daniel signs with Denver.

DENVER — Former University of Tennessee football player Trevor Daniel is looking to be in training camp for the Denver Broncos this summer.

Daniel, who finished the 2017 season at Tennessee with a 95.99 GPR punt rating, signed a reserve/future contract with the Broncos last December.

After his time on Rocky Top, Daniel a native of Dickson, Tenn. and graduate of Dickson County High School, was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Houston Texans in 2018.

With the Texans, he beat out longtime NFL punter Shane Lechler. During his first season with the team, Daniel had 74 punts and averaged 43.74 yards per kick.

He returned to Houston last season, but was waived on Sept. 17 after just two games.

The former Vol was replaced by veteran punter Bryan Anger, another NFL veteran.
