WATCH: Perrion Winfrey creates a safety, Sooners recover muffed punt for a touchdown

Watch as the Oklahoma Sooners take their first lead of the game and extended it on big plays by the defense and special teams.

The Oklahoma Sooners’ second-half possessions haven’t gone well offensively as the Cowboys have forced them to punt twice. However, sandwiched in between the two punts, Oklahoma Sooners defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey took matters into his own hands as he worked his way into the backfield and while blocked, forced the offensive lineman into the Cowboys running back, forcing the fumble that Oklahoma State recovered, leading to a safety and a 26-24 lead.

Winfrey has been having a great game for the Sooners. His disruption at the point of attack has kept the Oklahoma State Cowboys off balance in the running game. After the Cowboys seemed to keep the Sooners’ defense off-balance for much of the first half, Oklahoma started to hit its stride late in the second quarter.

After the safety, the Sooners went three and out and were forced to punt the ball back to Oklahoma State. Michael Turk hung a beautiful kick high in the air and as Trevon West beared down on the returner, hitting him as he tried to catch it, he muffed the punt and Justin Broiles recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown and a 33-24 lead.

The Oklahoma Sooners still have a long way to go, but their starting to hit their stride on the defensive side of the ball. The Sooners need to stay composed and continue to make plays, to find themselves on top when the game is over.

5 Final thoughts on the Oklahoma Sooners vs. the Texas Tech Red Raiders

As the Oklahoma Sooners get set to host the Texas Tech Red Raiders, here are five final thoughts on the important Big 12 matchup.

The Oklahoma Sooners have an opportunity to move to 9-0 today when they take on the 5-3 Texas Tech Red Raiders. The good news for Oklahoma is they still have room to improve and hopefully reinforcements are coming that will help that.

Lincoln Riley hinted that several defensive players could be back this week or after the bye and it appears that Jalen Redmond is one of them.

On the offensive side, he said Michael Woods and Mario Williams were close to returning as well. If the Sooners can maintain a relative level of health this week and during the stretch run of the season they still have a great shot to complete an undefeated 2021.

On paper, the Oklahoma Sooners are the better team, but they’ve played six of their eight games close and this one has the potential to be a close one as well. As we get ready for Oklahoma vs. Texas Tech, here are some final thoughts on Saturday’s game.

3 offensive keys that could lead to an Oklahoma victory over Texas Tech

3 Offensive keys to an Oklahoma Sooners win vs. the Texas Tech Red Raiders in week 9.

The Oklahoma Sooners are desperate for a bounce-back in the worst way. After an embarrassing performance against the Kansas Jayhawks, which saw the Jayhawks dominate for at least 2.5 quarters of the game, the Sooners should be chomping at the bit to play again.

They will get their shot as they play their penultimate home game this 2021 season against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Texas Tech comes in with their cloud hanging over their head in the form of having to play with their interim head coach in Sonny Cumbie, who took over for recently let go head coach Matt Wells.

The Sooners offense looked very uninspired much of the game. The offensive line didn’t dominate as they should’ve and while they were down a few playmakers, the Sooners’ offense didn’t look like it had been looking of late.

This Texas Tech defense ranks 70th in the nation in total defense. They aren’t great but they are not horrible either. They offer some decent resistance. However, with better focus and some better execution, there are plays to be had against them. Here are the Sooners Wire offensive keys to the game:

Switch it up

Far too often teams come out and just try to jam the ball down their opponent’s throat by running hapless runs one after the other.

This week, the Sooners should come out with some of their more creative play designs and get the juices flowing early.

The fans will be rocking and the Sooners need a fast start to wash away the stink of that previous game. Lincoln Riley should roll out one of his patented gadget plays and some quick passes to get Texas Tech on its heels early and the offense into a rhythm.

As Caleb Williams gets more comfortable in this offense, we should see the Sooners bring back the uptempo play calling as well to wear teams out.

Positional Report Card: How did the Sooners grade out in their win vs. Jayhawks?

In what turned out to be the Oklahoma’s worst performance of the season, how did each position group grade in this week’s Report Card?

Despicable. That’s it. That’s the word for Oklahoma’s collective performance against the Kansas Jayhawks.

Of course, they did enough in the second half to win the game and hop on the bus for Norman still undefeated. However, not one group put their best foot forward and it’s a start contrast from last week’s performance.

Some individual efforts were nice but collectively, position group by position group, this may have been the lousiest game of the year.

Without further ado, let’s look at the positional grades Oklahoma earned for their game against Kansas.

In their win against Kansas, a few Sooners were worthy of game balls

Despite a very uninspiring performance against the Jayhawks, three Sooners stood out for Oklahoma in their 35-23 win over to move to 8-0..

Let’s not beat around the bush. The Sooners don’t deserve for anyone to be getting any significant type of praise after the way they performed in Lawrence, Kansas.

Oklahoma looked unprepared, disinterested, and otherwise unbothered to play with any fire in the first half against Kansas. One can only imagine how that locker room was at halftime.

However, in the second half, the Sooners showed life. Overall, a few notable performances stood out from the rest of the pack, even though the team as a whole was underwhelming.

Here are this week’s game ball recipients.

Caleb Williams, QB

It’s becoming evident that Caleb Williams has something special about him. He’s shown that in the Texas game, and he gave the world a full game of that against TCU.

Against Kansas, Williams did whatever was necessary to get a win — even going as far as to take the ball from a stopped Kennedy Brooks and rumble forward for a critical conversion in the fourth quarter.

He had a very poor interception on an underthrown 50/50 ball, but he played composed despite the fact the Sooners as a whole looked lifeless most of the game.

Best Pro Football Focus Grades from Oklahoma’s win over TCU

Who earned the highest grades from Pro Football Focus in the Oklahoma Sooners 52-31 win over the TCU Horned Frogs?

On Saturday night, the Oklahoma Sooners were in a dog fight in the first half of their matchup against the TCU Horned Frogs. Though the game ended as a 21-point blowout win for the Oklahoma Sooners, it was a three-point game when the Sooners took over with 1:25 left in the second quarter.

Caleb Williams and the offense went 76 yards on five plays, culminating in an 11-yard touchdown strike to Jadon Haselwood on a beautiful back-shoulder throw, to make it 24-14. From that point, the Sooners never looked back.

They forced the Horned Frogs to punt on the opening possession of the second half, and another Williams to Haselwood touchdown essentially put the game out of reach, 31-14.

Though TCU battled to get back in the game, the Oklahoma Sooners had an answer at every corner and never let the game get closer than 14 points the rest of the way.

As we do each week, let’s look back at how Pro Football Focus graded the Sooners in their 52-31 win over the TCU Horned Frogs.

Report Card: Grading the Sooners following their 52-31 win over TCU

The Sooners dispatched TCU relatively comfortably. Let’s take a look at how each position group graded out in the 52-31 win.

For a while, it may have seemed like an afterthought to grade out the offense with A’s and B’s across the board. However, that time has arrived.  The offense was a bright spot, and the defense wasn’t as bad as maybe it appeared.

As we do each week, let’s look at how each position group graded in the Sooners 52-31 thrashing of the TCU Horned Frogs.

Quarterbacks: A

No need to beat around the bush here: Caleb Williams was phenomenal in his first start since usurping Spencer Rattler in Oklahoma’s thrilling come-from-behind win against Texas.

He dazzled the sold-out crowd in Norman and had national media in an uproar. Williams was 18 of 23 for 295 yards passing and four touchdowns, three of which made their way to Jadon Haselwood. He added 66 yards rushing, including the electric 41-yard TD run in the third quarter you can see below.

After that performance, there’s no need to speculate about who will be the quarterback as Oklahoma heads to the state of Kansas again for their second true road game against the Kansas Jayhawks.

The next step for Williams is to continue to mature and grow within the offense.

Trevon West stays with the Oklahoma Sooners after entering transfer portal

After putting his name in the transfer portal back in February, Lincoln Riley announced wide receiver Trevon West returned to the Sooners.

The Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver depth chart kept a familiar face in the fold as Lincoln Riley announced at his pre-fall camp press conference that wide receiver Trevon West is back with the team.

West, who had put his name in the transfer portal in February, opted to stay with the Sooners entering his sophomore season.

In 2020, West played in eight games. According to Pro Football Focus, West had four receptions, all of which came in the 2020 opener against Missouri State. In the opener, West played seven snaps and ran a route on all seven snaps. He was targeted four times, catching all four passes for 59 yards, averaging 14.8 yards per reception. All four of his receptions went for first downs.

The only other game where West saw a target was in the Cotton Bowl blowout of the Florida Gators. He was unable to convert either of his two targets into a catch in that contest.

The former three-star recruit out of Lamar High School in Arlington, Texas, returns to a wide receiver group that is very deep. Marvin Mims, Theo Wease, Jadon Haselwood and Mike Woods figure to lead a group that also includes Drake Stoops, Mario Williams, Jalil Farooq and Cody Jackson.

It may be challenging for West to see the field early, but there will be opportunities to carve out a role in Lincoln Riley’s offense with a strong fall camp.

Oklahoma freshman WR Trevon West entering transfer portal

Oklahoma freshman wide receiver Trevon West officially entered the transfer portal on Tuesday.

It’s been a busy offseason already of players coming and going for Oklahoma, and the severe winter weather still isn’t enough to slow things down. Freshman wide receiver Trevon West officially entered the NCAA transfer portal on Tuesday.

The class of 2020 three-star product played in eight games a season ago picking up four receptions — all of which came in the season opener against Missouri State. He also made appearances against Texas, Texas Tech, Kansas, Oklahoma State, Baylor, Iowa State in the Big 12 championship game and Florida in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl.

West committed to the Sooners back in February of 2019, and was rated just outside the top-100 wide receivers in the country in his class by 247Sports’ composite rankings. He had also received offers from several other power five programs in Texas Tech, Kansas, Illinois and Minnesota.

Obviously still an extremely young player, West certainly has the potential to be a good player down the road for another program. It may have just been a simple case of looking for an opportunity of more playing time, as where he fits in down the road wasn’t exactly clear with Oklahoma.

Sooners Wire will provide updates on where West lands as the information becomes available.
