Rival executives believe Tremont Waters will earn a standard NBA deal

Celtics rookie Tremont Waters impressed those in attendance at the NBA G League Winter Showcase over the weekend in Las Vegas.

Boston Celtics second-round pick Tremont Waters has put together a strong rookie campaign and is beginning to draw attention from other NBA teams around the league.

As Keith Smith of Yahoo Sports detailed on Twitter, Waters impressed those in attendance at the NBA G League Winter Showcase over the weekend in Las Vegas. The four-day tournament included all 28 G League teams as players competed in front of executives, scouts and coaches for a $100,000 grand prize.

Waters recorded 27 points, nine assists, five steals and two rebounds for the Maine Red Claws on Thursday while he added 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals on Saturday. Waters and rookie teammate Carsen Edwards combined to score 50 points for the Red Claws on Thursday as the two put on a show.

After a strong showing in Las Vegas, a couple of rival front office executives left the event impressed with Waters. One executive believes Waters will eventually earn a standard NBA contract. Waters is currently signed to a two-way contract but the Celtics can upgrade his deal at any point.

Waters has spent the majority of the season in the G League. In 13 games played, Waters is averaging 20.1 points, 7.5 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 steals. He is 12th in the G League in assists and 12th in steals.

The former LSU guard plays with high energy and is among the fastest players in the league. Given his abilities, Waters has a bright future and should eventually earn a standard NBA deal from the Celtics or another team.

Boston’s Tremont Waters getting noticed by rival GMs

Two-way rookie floor general Tremont Waters is getting second look from rival executives with his excellent play in the Maine Red Claws in the G League this season.

Boston Celtics rookie two way point guard Tremont Waters is turning heads, and not just those attached to the bodies of hopeful fans of the Massachusetts franchise.

With several gaudy performances with the Maine Red Claws already under his belt, including 27 points, 9 assists and 5 steals against the Canton Charge at the Las Vegas Winter G League Showcase and a 7-point, 3-assist, 2-block outing with the parent club against the Sacramento Kings Nov. 25th, rival general managers are taking note as well.

“He’s an NBA backup point guard right now. I told my GM to trade for him because he’s better than what we have right now,” said an anonymous scout regarding Waters’ play at the showcase reports Yahoo Sports’ Keith Smith.

Averaging 20.1 points, 3.2 boards and 7.5 assists per game with the Claws in his inaugural season, those rival executives may have a point.

With seven rookies joining the team this offseason, Boston has had an embarrassment of riches as far as draft luck is concerned, with every player taken in 2019 having contributed significant minutes already this season.

In fact, their most popular rookie, Tacko Fall, went undrafted, and has been more than a passing fixation with his steady development.

The Celtics’ good fortune with its draft class has mostly gone under the radar nationally while the development of their two young wings — Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum — the resurgence of forward Gordon Hayward and a cavalcade of injuries has dominated the news cycle covering the team.

But it’s getting harder to hide just how much talent the team may have walked away from the 2019 NBA Draft with, and Waters’ steady hand and clear court vision may be among their best steals.

What the future holds with the Connecticut native with the Celtics is probably a long way of from being determined.

But if he keeps up this pace of growth as a prospect, you can bet we’ll be seeing more of the LSU product at the NBA level, whether with Boston, or some other team.

Waters, Edwards lead Red Claws with 50 in the G League Winter Showcase

Tremont Waters and Carsen Edwards combined to score 50 points on Thursday with the Maine Red Claws in the NBA G League Winter Showcase.

Boston Celtics rookies Tremont Waters and Carsen Edwards combined to score 50 points on Thursday for the Maine Red Claws in the NBA G League Winter Showcase in Las Vegas.

Waters led the Red Claws with 27 points, while he added nine assists, five steals and two rebounds in 36 minutes of work. The second-round pick finished by shooting 11-of-20 from the field in the 118-113 loss to the Canton Charge.

Edwards finished the game with 23 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the field and added eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. The sharpshooter struggled to connect from deep, converting on just 1-of-8 from beyond the arc in his third game with the Red Claws.

The G League Winter Showcase includes all 28 G League teams in a four-day tournament in front of NBA executives, scouts and coaches. The top four teams from the regular season — Memphis Hustle, Wisconsin Herd, Salt Lake City Stars and the Grand Rapids Drive — will compete for $100,000 in a championship bracket.

Waters and Edwards have formed a dynamic duo for the Red Claws in the G League in such a short time. The two also combined to score 56 points in a win on Sunday over the Drive. They ultimately didn’t earn the win on Thursday but the two have played very well together in the G League.

Carsen Edwards, Tremont Waters combine for 56 points for the Red Claws

Two way guard Tremont Waters and sharpshooting Carsen Edwards torched the Grand Rapid Drive for 56 points combined.

With the highs come the lows, and for the four players playing for the Maine Red Claws on a Boston Celtics contract, there was a little of both on Sunday.

First, the bad news — if you can call the normal off-days of young prospects “bad news”.

In a 108-103 win over the Detroit Pistons’ G League team (the Grand Rapids Drive) fan favorite two way center Tacko Fall had his lowest-scoring game of the season with the Claws, as did Celtics lottery pick Romeo Langford.

Not to worry, though, as most young prospects lay eggs from time to time, and the pair are both recently returned from injuries to their lower extremities, so it could take time for both to get their sea legs back.

Langford logged precisely zero points, his shooting touch evidently back in Boston while he went 0-for-5 from the floor.

But he did help out his teammates with 3 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks over 19 minutes, a good sign for a young player to be aware of and engaged in the little things that can help a team win even if you’re ice cold on the night.

Fall scored 6 points and 4 rebounds with his own pair of blocks, shooting an inefficient 2-of-5 from the floor.

The Senegalese center still managed to make life difficult in the lane for opponents during his 21 minutes of gametime, per WEEI’s Nick Friar.

Now, the good news.

Boston’s future backcourt lit up the Drive for 56 points combined, with two way floor general Tremont Waters dropping 28 points and five boards on the Drive.

At the same time, rookie sharpshooter Carsen Edwards hit Grand Rapids with 28 points of his own, hitting 50 % from deep and inside the arc, going 9-for-18 on the night.

The Purdue product joins Langford in getting some reps with the Red Claws while the parent club is resting, as the latter has had struggles hitting with the Celtics.

The former is just getting back to healthy after a season mostly spent recovering from a litany of minor injuries.

Claws forward Kaiser Gates also deserves a mention for his 21 points and 10 boards, which helped secure the win for the 9-4 Red Claws, currently in second place in the league’s East standings.

The Red Claws next face the Canton Charge in Las Vegas ahead of the G League showcase, after which Celtic’s favorite 7-foot-5 center will make the trip back to Boston to conduct the Pops.

Langford may rejoin the team ahead of their Dec. 18 meeting with the Dallas Mavericks if needed, but will likely continue training with the Red Claws for some time to get the reps he needs for development.

No word on Edwards’ plans with either team, but he may rejoin the Celtics as well vs. the Mavs.

Waters will almost certainly remain with Portland for the near-term barring injury on the parent club.

Carsen Edwards, Tremont Waters combine for 56 points in the G League

Celtics rookies Carsen Edwards and Tremont Waters led the Maine Red Claws to victory in the G League on Sunday.

Boston Celtics rookies Carsen Edwards and Tremont Waters combined to score 56 points on Sunday for the Maine Red Claws in a 108-103 victory over the Grand Rapids Drive.

Edwards tallied 28 points, six steals, five assists and three rebounds as he finished by shooting 9-of-18 from the field, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range.

The Celtics assigned Edwards to the Red Claws on Thursday after receiving little playing time. Edwards made his G League debut on Friday, recording 17 points in a win over the Iowa Wolves.

Meanwhile, Waters also scored 28 points in the win while he added five rebounds, four assists, three steals. The second-round pick shot 6-of-11 from the field and went 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.

Of course, the Celtics have quite a few first-year players within their organization that played with Maine on Sunday:

  • Tacko Fall: The 7-foot-5 center with six points, four rebounds and two blocks in 21 minutes off of the bench. The game marked his second appearance back after missing five games due to a bone bruise on his right knee.
  • Romeo Langford: Langford went scoreless in 19 minutes of action as he missed all five shot attempts while he added three rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.

With several contributors on the Celtics, the team hasn’t quite had enough minutes for their crop of rookies. The G League has provided the young guys an opportunity to stay sharp and develop on the court and the team certainly has to feel confident with how they’ve played thus far.

Next up for Maine: A road matchup on Thursday vs. the Canton Charge.

Tacko Fall, Tremont Waters active for Celtics on Thursday vs. 76ers

Celtics two-way rookies Tacko Fall and Tremont Waters are both on the active roster Thursday night against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Boston Celtics two-way rookies Tacko Fall and Tremont Waters are both on the active roster Thursday night against the Philadelphia 76ers, according to Jared Weiss of The Athletic.

Fall has spent the majority of the season in the G League with the Maine Red Claws but hasn’t played since Nov. 25 against the Memphis Hustle after sustaining a bone bruise on his right knee. He has been with the Celtics rehabbing since suffering the injury and is apparently ready to return to the court.

Fall set the Red Claws franchise record against the Hustle after hauling in 14 offensive rebounds, topping the previous team record of 12. In six G League games, Fall is averaging 15 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.7 blocks. He ranks 10th in rebounds and sixth in blocks.

Meanwhile, Waters was named the G League Player of the Month after averaging 22.3 points, 7.7 assists, three rebounds and 1.7 steals in six November games. He recently recorded his third straight double-double with the Red Claws on Saturday, tallying 18 points and 11 assists.

Fall first made his official Celtics debut on Oct. 26 against the New York Knicks. In three minutes, the 7-foot-5 center recorded four points and three rebounds in mop-up duty.

Waters recently debuted with the Celtics on Nov. 25 with Kemba Walker sidelined due to a neck injury. The second-round pick recorded seven points, three assists, two rebounds and two blocks in 20 minutes of work.

Tremont Waters logs double-double, Vincent Poirier 18 points with Red Claws in loss

Despite a monster 43-point night from teammate Bryce Brown, 18 points from Boston’s Vincent Poirier and a double-double from two way guard Tremont Waters, the Maine Red Claws fell to the Delaware Bluecoats 128-123.

Boston Celtics two way guard Tremont Waters continues to show out on his assignment to the Maine Red Claws, logging his third double-double with Boston’s G League affiliate this season with 18 points and 11 assists.

It came in a 128-123 loss to the Delaware Bluecoats — the affiliate of the Philadelphia 76ers’ — despite a franchise-record 11 treys from fellow Claws guard Bryce Brown, who shot a sizzling 15-of-17 overall from the floor with a monster 43-point outing.

The loss came despite an excellent night from Celtics center Vincent Poirier as well, who added 18 points and 4 boards while fan favorite big man Tacko Fall continues to recuperate from a sprained knee.

Claws center Yante Maten also chipped in 18 points for good measure, but it wasn’t enough to defeat the Bluecoats, led by guard Xavier Munford’s 44-point, 7 board performance, buttressed by guard Marial Shayok’s 26 points and 6 assists.

The Red Claws now stand at 7-4 on their season, losing 2 of their last three despite amazing play from Connecticut native Waters, who has averaged 16 points, 10.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game over that stretch.

While enough to garner G League Player of the Month accolades, it’s clear the team misses Senegalese big man Fall considerably.

The 7-foot-5 center should be back soon, however, if the initial assessment of 1-2 weeks holds true, with a little over a week having passed since the bone bruise was sustained on Nov. 27.

Tremont Waters had third straight G League double-double on Saturday

Tremont Waters is averaging 16 points, 10.3 assists and 2.3 steals over his last three games for the Maine Red Claws.

Boston Celtics two-way rookie guard Tremont Waters recorded his third straight double-double with the Maine Red Claws in the G League on Saturday night.

Waters finished with 18 points, 11 assists and three steals during the 128-123 loss to the Delaware Blue Coats. Over his last three games, Waters is averaging 16 points, 10.3 assists and 2.3 steals as the Red Claws are 1-2 in those games.

The second-round pick once again showed off his court vision in the game on Saturday as he has established himself among the top guards in the G League. Waters was named the G League Player of the Month after averaging 22.3 points, 7.7 assists, three rebounds and 1.7 steals in six November games.

The matchup between the Red Claws and Blue Coats proved to be an entertaining affair as the two teams exchanged leads in the fourth quarter. Red Claws guard Bryce Brown set a franchise record after hitting all 11 3-point attempts to finish with 41 points.

Waters has proven to be a standout among the rookie class this season in the G League as several first-year players have emerged for their respective clubs.

Waters is now averaging 20.2 points, 8.4 assists and 1.9 steals for the Red Claws in nine games played. Maine returns to action on Friday against the Iowa Wolves.

Rookie players are taking over the NBA G League in 2019-20

Among the top scorers in the G League this season, five players in the top 10 are first-year players.

As the NBA G League approaches the one-month mark of the season, several players have performed well and are off to great starts with many of those outings coming from the 2019 NBA Draft class.

Among the top scorers in the G League, five players in the top 10 are rookies and two first-year players, Kyle Guy and Marial Shayok, hold the top individual scoring performances of the season with 42 points each.

With most players having suited up in around 8-10 games, Rookie Wire took a look at those rookies that are making an impact with their respective clubs this season.

Jeremiah Martin, Sioux Falls Skyforce

The former Memphis forward is currently second in total scoring (242) this season and leads all rookies to this point. Martin is averaging 22 points, 6.2 assists and 3.1 rebounds in 11 games for the Skyforce.

Martin has shown no problems transitioning to the G League as he has seven games scoring at least 20 points, including three 30-plus games. He is converting on 52.8% of his shots, including 33.3% from 3-point range.

NBA teams previously had a wealth of free-agent talent available in the G League player pool but the addition of two-way contracts has made a dent in the number of available players to sign.

Martin could be one of those players to target this season.

Tremont Waters named Player of the Month for G League

Boston Celtics rookie point guard Tremont Waters was a steal with the 51st pick in the 2019 NBA Draft and the Maine Red Claws have benefited the most from that.

Per an official announcement from the Maine Red Claws (h/t NBC Sports Boston’s Chris Forsberg), Boston Celtics rookie point guard Tremont Waters — a two-way player who will spend the majority of his time with the Maine Red Claws this season — has been named the Player of the Month for the NBA G League in November.

The Red Claws compiled 7-2 record in November with their only two losses coming with Waters out of the lineup. Per the team’s announcement, the 5-foot-10 floor general is just the second player to earn that honor in franchise history.

A dynamic pick-and-roll player with a knack for scoring outside, Waters has averaged 22.3 points, 7.7 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game, shooting 45.0% from the field and 40.3% from three-point range.

Per the G League’s official league leaders, Waters ranks in the top-15 in scoring average, the top-five in average assists and the top-30 in average steals.
