Bills vs. Broncos: 5 matchups to watch

The Buffalo Bills face the struggling Denver Broncos at New Era Field on Sunday, here are the matchups to watch

The rivalry between the Bills and the Broncos goes back to the AFL and the two have shared memorable moments throughout the years. Their last matchup was in Week 3 of the 2017 season, which resulted in a 26-16 victory for Buffalo.

This week the two teams are facing off with two contrasting seasons. The Bills are sitting at 7-3 and on the verge of a playoff birth. The Broncos though are at a disappointing 3-7.

Records aside, it will be the games within that games that will help us find the winner.

With that, here are five key matchups to watch in Sunday’s Bills-Broncos meeting:

Phillip Lindsay vs. Tremaine Edmunds

Second-year running back Phillip Lindsay has made a splash since his arrival in the NFL, amassing 1,688 yards, 5.2 yards per carry and 14 touchdowns a a rookie. Now, Lindsay is the focal point of the struggling Denver offense.

This season Lindsay is averaging an impressive 4.9 yards per carry, which should unnerve Buffalo’s shaky run defense. The Bills’ rush defense has allowed 106.3 yards per game, which is 18th in the NFL. The Bills should be prepared for heavy doses of Lindsay, due to how poor the Broncos passing offense has been this season sitting at 25th in the league with just 206.6 yards per game.

While the Bills rush defense has had poor form recently, they bounced back against Miami, holding the Dolphins rushing attack to just 23 yards. The Bills were led by linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, who had 12 tackles against Miami.

Edmunds was sent on more blitzes versus Miami than the rest of the season. These blitzes let him use his natural athletic talent to reach the running back in the backfield, or at the line of scrimmage. He blew up runs on a consistent basis which turned Miami into a one dimensional offense.

If Edmunds can have a similar performance on Sunday, he can force quarterback Brandon Allen to try to beat the Bills secondary.

PODCAST: 3 takeaways from Bills’ dominant win over Dolphins

Kyle Silagyi is joined by Rich Kowalski and McKenna Middlebrook to discuss three takeaways from the Buffalo Bills’ Week 11 win.

The Buffalo Bills took care of business in their Week 11 matchup with the Miami Dolphins.

The prospective playoff team was supposed to dominate its lowly division rival. The struggling defense was supposed to refind its form, making it difficult for Miami’s offense to make any sort of progress. Quarterback Josh Allen was supposed to pick the Dolphins’ 29th ranked defense apart, leading the team to a ‘statement’ game that would reaffirm its status as a legitimate contender.

In untypical Buffalo fashion, all of these events played out as planned, as the Bills dominated Miami en route to a 37-20 victory. On this episode of The Kyle Silagyi Variety Hour, host Kyle Silagyi is joined by BillsWire staff writers Rich Kowalski and McKenna Middlebrook to discuss their three takeaways from the Bills’ Week 11 victory. They also talk about the Los Angeles Chargers’ rumored move to London.

What we learned from Bills’ Week 11 victory over Miami

With questions starting to creep in about the Bills and the overall outlook of their 2019 season, a comfortable, yet fun win, in Miami, was just what the doctor ordered for Sean McDermott’s team.

The Bills rebounded from a tough loss in Cleveland and got back on the winning track by lighting up the scoreboard at Hard Rock Stadium. Buffalo produced its highest-scoring output of the season in a 37-20 trouncing of the Dolphins.

The Bills offense got up off the canvas after a week of taking punches in the form of criticism from fans and local media for numerous subpar performances since September. Any offensive shortcomings the Bills have been experiencing this season were forgotten for most of the day Sunday as the Bills posted 424 yards of total offense and seven different scoring drives.

It was a big day for quarterback Josh Allen. Allen had his best outing of the season, completing 21 of 33 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns. He also added 56 yards rushing and a rushing touchdown. Meanwhile, receiver John Brown had his biggest and best day yet for Buffalo with nine catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns.

The Buffalo defense had an overall strong day, even though Ryan Fitzpatrick passed for 323 yards. The Bills sacked Fitzpatrick seven times and produced a takeaway for the first time since October. The run defense rebounded in a huge way by allowing Miami just 23 rushing yards. It was a major change for a run defense that had been gashed in recent weeks.

The Bills now sit at 7-3 and have to feel a bit more comfortable than they did last week about their playoff outlook. They can get to 8-3 this coming week back at home against the 3-7 Denver Broncos before they make their Thanksgiving trip to Dallas.

Here are four things we learned from the Bills’ win Sunday in South Florida:

Report card: Bills win 37-20 vs. Dolphins

The Bills came out swinging against the Dolphins, who took an early lead and never looked back.

The Buffalo Bills continued their strong road performances this season with 37-20 win over the Miami Dolphins. The Bills are now 7-3, sitting pretty for a wild card spot.

After their loss against the Browns, the Bills offense was called into question by both their fans and the media. The Bills responded by pouring on 37 points against a poor Miami defense.

The Bills defense also came out and stopped the run, as well as getting pressure to the quarterback. It wasn’t a perfect game from Buffalo, but a step in the right direction after the disappointing loss to Cleveland.

After the victory in Miami, here’s how the Bills graded in this week’s report card:

Quarterback: A-

This was possibly the best performance by Josh Allen in his young career. Allen started the game strong, but on the first two drives he couldn’t create touchdowns, only field goals. On the third drive Allen found receiver John Brown for a 40-yard touchdown strike. Allen hit Brown who was streaking down the sideline, and Brown bumped off a defender before heading into the end zone.

After a drive that led to just a field goal, Allen worked some red zone magic and found tight end Dawson Knox who shrugged off a defender after the catch to walk in for the score on an all-out blitz from the Dolphins defense. In the third quarter Allen had an eight-yard scramble where he used his speed to reach the outside and hurdle for the score.

It wasn’t a perfect game for Allen, he didn’t complete many deep shots, and had some head scratching throws. Ultimately, Allen had one of the best games of his career. He completed 21 out of his 33 passes, a 63.6 completion percentage, he threw for 256 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions.

Tremaine Edmunds spearheads Bills defense in win vs. Dolphins

Tremaine Edmunds led the way in Buffalo’s Week 11 win over the Miami Dolphins.

Buffalo’s defense entered its Week 11 meeting with the Miami Dolphins in need of a resurgence.

The unit, which was once widely looked at as one of the stronger defensive groupings in the league, had struggled in the weeks leading up to its matchup with the 2-6 Dolphins. The team had allowed over 350 net yards in three out of its previous four contests. It had given up triple-digit rushing nets in each of its last five games.

The Bills’ defense was in desperate need of a statement game, a contest that could reaffirm its status as one of the league’s elite units.

Spearheaded by the play of Tremaine Edmunds, Buffalo did just that.

The Bills’ defense was near-impenetrable in the team’s 37-20 win over Miami, allowing a total of just 303 yards. The previously struggling run defense refound its form in Hard Rock Stadium, allowing a season-best 23 rushing yards in the contest.

The defense played with a tenacity it hadn’t shown in recent weeks, a mindset that was set and demonstrated by Edmunds, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

“They were aggressive,” McDermott said. “They were aggressive, and they had a great week of preparation, that’s really where it starts. You go back and say, ‘Why did we get the results that we got?’ And you double down on those habits. Those are good things.

“Just the overall aggressiveness, I think overall, was where it needed to be. I thought Tremaine did a great job from the communication standpoint, from a leadership standpoint.”

Edmunds tallied a team-high 12 tackles on the day, complementing explosive plays at the line of scrimmage with solid plays in coverage.

The game perhaps served as a microcosm of Edmunds’ entire skillset. The rangy middle linebacker prevented Miami from picking up anything on the ground with his stout play against the run. He also broke up a deep pass to Miami tight end Mike Gesicki in the fourth quarter. He even notched a half-sack in the contest, contributing to Buffalo’s total of six.

Though statistics and strong play are valuable, a unit’s culture is perhaps as important as it is immeasurable. The 21-year-old Edmunds set the tone for the entire Bills’ roster ahead of its dominant outing, a process he started with a speech days before the matchup.

“Tremaine, he gave a speech yesterday,” wide receiver John Brown said following the win. “It was time to show them what we can do . . . [He said] it’s just time for us to play our game and play fast, and leave no doubt behind.

“Everybody was amped up and ready to go . . . You barely hear Tremaine talk, so I was kind of shocked by that.”

Typically a lead-by-example type of player, it was a verbal speech from Edmunds that ultimately propelled Buffalo to victory. Now able to complement his on-field production with off-field influence, Edmunds is a player that teammates look to for inspiration.

“Tremaine is a true leader,” defensive tackle Jordan Phillips said. “He not only says it but he goes out there and does it. He goes out there and plays hard, plays free.

“I look to him when I need guidance. He’s a young guy but he’s all over the place and he’s a leader of our defense.”

Report card: Bills lose 19-16 to Browns

The Buffalo Bills fall to 6-3 after their loss to the Cleveland Browns. Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll will be called into question.

The Buffalo Bills and the Cleveland Browns had a slug-fest on Sunday, where the Browns won 19-16 It was an ugly game where both defenses played physical, and forced mistakes.

Neither offense looked impressive, but the *outcome* did enough to give the Browns a victory.

The Bills fall to 6-3 on the year, and here’s how Bills Wire graded things out for Buffalo in Week 10:

Quarterback: C-

Josh Allen had 41 passing attempts on Sunday, and completing just 53 percent of his passes. That is not very good. Allen throughout the game looked flustered, which lead to plenty of throws going over the heads of his receivers or landing at their feet.

Allen had some moments where he was elusive in the pocket making defenders miss, but he couldn’t find the right the pass in those crucial moments. Allen finished the game with a respectable 266 yards, and didn’t throw an interception but, he didn’t throw a touchdown, either. He was effective with his legs in the redzone though, scoring twice.

Ultimately, Allen had an underwhelming performance that cost Buffalo the victory in Cleveland. Bills fans will be looking for Allen to bounce back next week in Miami.
