Instant analysis: Bills return to dominant play with win vs. Jets

The #Bills dominant the #Jets (via @Jdiloro):

Playing the lowly New York Jets was just what the Buffalo Bills needed to return to their winning ways. Buffalo manhandled New York, 45-17, in a game that really didn’t challenge the Bills too often on the afternoon.

The Bills defense put a kibosh on the talk of Mike White against a strong defensive unit. White, who put up an astounding 405 passing yards the first time he touched the field, was overwhelmed.

White doubled his interception total from the season, throwing four picks during the game. Taron Johnson, Levi Wallace, Tre’Davious White, and Jordan Poyer recorded interceptions during the game for Buffalo (6-3).

The Bills’ Micah Hyde added to the turnover total, stripping Corey Davis on a long pass from White. To top it off, Hyde recovered the fumble.

Buffalo’s defensive line put pressure on White all afternoon. Ed Oliver dominated in the interior of the line, providing a push up the middle that has been absent over the past few games. Efe Obada, Boogie Basham, and Harrison Phillips did a good job in place of Star Lotulelei.

Even though the defense did not record a sack, they did put enough pressure on White to force inaccurate throws. Jerry Hughes, Mario Addison, and Gregory Rousseau consistently won battles on the edge.

Buffalo was without middle linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, who missed the game due to a hamstring injury. AJ Klein filled in admirably, racking up seven tackles and registering two tackles for loss along with a pass defensed.

While the defense pulled off another dominant performance, the big change in this week’s game was the offensive responding favorably throughout the game. In past weeks, Buffalo’s offense stalled multiple times, squandering opportunities and handling looking like the juggernaut from last year:

The Bills offense flipped that script, returning to their explosive play. Buffalo’s wide receivers hauled in several nice catches throughout the game. For the most part, the offensive line looked more cohesive in pass protection, trending in a better direction from past games:

Stefon Diggs, Gabriel Davis, and Emmanuel Sanders all had spectacular catches on the day. Diggs caught a game-best 57-yard bomb from Allen, as he smoked the secondary on a double move.

As with the defense, an offensive player stepped up as he took on more snaps in the game.

Running back Matt Brieda found the end zone twice during the game. He scored the game’s first touchdown, as he came out of the backfield and continued his route into the end zone, where Allen bought some time and found the veteran for six points.

Brieda added a 15-yard touchdown rush. The former 49er provided a bit more speed in the backfield. Brieda’s only downfall: he fumbled in the fourth quarter.

It was a good response from Brian Daboll with the offensive play calling as well. Daboll was creative in getting the ball into the hands of players in the backfield.

The aforementioned Brieda helped a little bit. The Bills also used Sanders and Isaiah McKenzie in the rushing game, with the latter scoring on a jet sweep. Buffalo scored four touchdowns on the ground. Devin Singletary, Zack Moss, Brieda, and McKenzie all scored as part of the run game “explosion” against the Jets.

Buffalo takes on Indianapolis next Sunday at Highmark Stadium. It’s another big game, as both teams are jockeying for position within the AFC playoff standings. The Bills are trying to move up to the No. 1 spot in the conference, while the Colts are vying for playoff legitimacy.

Bills vs. Jets: 6 things fans should know about Buffalo in Week 10

Get to know the Bills before the Jets’ Week 10 matchup.

The Jets play arguably their toughest opponent in Week 10.

Not only are the Bills one of the best teams in the league, but they’re also coming off a devastating loss to the Jaguars and looking to bounce back in a big way. Buffalo has won by a combined 50 points in the games immediately following its two other losses this season.

New York proved the past two weeks its offense works, but it’s the defense that’s played ineffectively recently. The matchup doesn’t get much easier against Josh Allen and the Bills’ skill position players. Winning the battle in the trenches without giving up the big plays will be the biggest key for the Jets’ defense, while the offense just needs to find ways to build momentum without making mistakes.

Here are six things to know about the Bills heading into the Jets’ Week 10 matchup.

To say it was a lackluster performance by the Buffalo Bills would be giving the team a lot of credit after Sunday’s loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Bills fell to the lowly Jaguars 9-6 is a horrendous display of offensive football.

Buffalo came in as a 14.5-point favorite, in a game that should have been a gimme. For the second straight week, the Bills underperformed offensively. This week, it led to their demise.

There are many concerns with the Bills after a game like this. Starting off, the undisciplined play started early in the game. It was apparent that Jacksonville’s goal was to get Buffalo off of their game. It worked in spades, as the Bills were called for multiple personal foul penalties. The Bills were backed up for 118 penalty yards on 12 accepted penalties. The mistakes just kept building for Buffalo, as they allowed a far inferior team to remain in this game.

This game also solidifies the idea that Buffalo’s offensive line configuration is substandard, at best. Jacksonville, as a team, was credited with eight quarterback hits and six tackles for loss. Yes, the Bills were forced to reconfigure the line with the loss of Jon Feliciano. However, the line’s inability to give Josh Allen any respectable amount of time in the pocket is a massive problem that the coaching staff needs to address. As a whole, the line was unable to win the point of attack.

Allen was running for his life in this game. He was forced to break out of the pocket to have any reasonable chance of completing passes. The Bills offensive line, more so than the Jaguars pass rush, neutralized Buffalo’s offense.

It doesn’t help that the team’s run game is atrocious. A good deal of this is on the line, but Devin Singletary and Zack Moss could make nothing happen on the ground. The longest run for the duo was seven yards. Without any respect for the run, the Jaguars defensive line teed off on Allen.

Buffalo’s offense did not look ready for this game. With the litany of mistakes on the field, that falls on the coaching. Yes, a great deal of the problems started with the offensive line. However, there was no creativity or alterations to help mask the issues with the line. Thus, it was a solid sixty minutes of unflattering play.

The game was similar to the 2017 Wild Card game against the Jaguars. Buffalo’s defense kept them in the game, limiting the porous Jacksonville offensive attack. The Bills allowed only 218 total yards to the Jaguars. Buffalo only allowed two successful third-down attempts on 13 tries.

Mario Addison recorded a sack, while AJ Epenesa and Tre’Davious White split a sack. Jerry Hughes forced a Carlos Hyde fumble, which Levi Wallace recovered.

The top-rated defense held up their end of the bargain. The Bills offense did not deliver.

Allen, under duress for most of the game, tried to make things happen with his legs and create time for himself. Unfortunately, he also took some risks, ended up with two interceptions in this game. He ended the day 31-of-47 for 264 passing yards. The shocker: zero touchdowns.

It was a miserable game for Buffalo, a team that is in the conversation for a Super Bowl appearance. With the struggles of the past two weeks, it looks as if the league is catching up with the Bills. And, that’s a major problem for Buffalo. When the strength of the team puts for a horrendous performance such as this, there are bound to be massive concerns.

This was not a game that Buffalo should have been concerned about. Yet, it happened.

The Bills look to get things on the right path next week when they face the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.

The Bills’ top-five grades from PFF against the Dolphins

The #Bills’ top-five grades from PFF against the #Dolphins:

Considering the way things went down, it’s not a surprise to see where most of the Buffalo Bills’ best grades from Pro Football Focus came from against the Miami Dolphins.

In the 26-11 win for the Bills (5-2), the offense had a very slow start, only putting up three points in the first half.

However, the defense held, also only holding Miami to three of their own in the same time frame. Throughout the whole game, only one touchdown was given up by Buffalo on defense.

With that in mind, PFF’s top-five grades from the Bills’ win included four players on defense. Only offensive lineman Dion Dawkins appeared from the offense:

Safety Jordan Poyer had the biggest play of the game, icing it with an interception. He also had a team-high 10 tackles.

Rookie Greg Rousseau appeared to take a step back in this one. In his first outing vs. Miami, he had two sacks. Still, he was a difference maker for PFF. He had two QB hits.

Meanwhile, Hughes had two QB hits of his own, notching a sack as well.

Finally, White was heard from the least against Miami.

That’s perfect for a defensive back, signaling he was doing his job well. White did have two pass breakups.

Behind Enemy Lines: 6 questions with Bills Wire for Week 3

We chatted with Bills Wire this week to preview Sunday’s Week 3 contest between the #WashingtonFootball and the Buffalo Bills.

The Washington Football Team hits the road in Week 3 for the first time in 2021 on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Can Washington pull off the big road upset against one of the NFL’s best teams?

To gain a better understanding of who Washington is facing on Sunday, we spoke with Bills Wire managing editor Nick Wojton this week, and he answered several important questions before Sunday’s game:

What Washington WR Terry McLaurin said about Bills CB Tre’Davious White

Terry McLaurin respects the heck out of #Bills CB Tre’Davious White. What he said:

The Buffalo Bills have an elite wide receiver heading toward Orchard Park this weekend.

While backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke will be starting for an injured Ryan Fitzpatrick, wide receiver Terry Laurin doesn’t seem to care all that much.

With Heinicke leading the way last week, McLaurin still put up a massive stat line. He hauled in 11 catches for 107 yards and a touchdown against the New York Giants.

Game still respects game.

This week, McLaurin spoke about his upcoming matchup with the Bills defense. He knows plenty of that will involve cornerback Tre’Davious White, and McLaurin knows White has talent.

Transcribed by our friends at Washington Football Wire, McLaurin said this week that White can do… well, everything. He gave quite an impressive scouting report on the All-Pro cornerback.

McLaurin added that it’s going to be a measuring stick type of game for him:

He can play press-man, his press-man technique is very patient. He does a really good job of cutting off the receivers when they get into the stems of their routes. He’s strong when he’s in press coverage with his game. He can run with pretty much any receiver out there, which makes it really tough. So when he’s playing off, he does a really good job of reading the receiver’s body language. So if you’re taking any false steps, you’re leaning any routes, he’s going to jump it. He does a really good job of undercutting routes, so you’ve got to be able to fight through the contact when you’re playing against a guy like that. You’ve got to be able to get on his toes and dictate a little bit. Just be ready for contested catches and be ready for a four-quarter battle. Because he can cover from the left, right, slot, he can pretty much do it all. I got respect for the way he plays DB and the way he competes. Games like this are fun for me because you get to go up against another really good player and see how you measure up.

From the sounds of it, McLaurin is going to get his chances as well.

Heincike is a mobile quarterback that can make things happen a few different ways for his team. But he made sure to note this week that he has to win with his arm, namely in a way that allows teammates like McLaurin to do their thing.

“The biggest thing was just kind of staying in the pocket and getting the ball to those playmakers. That’s what you want to do anyways. It was good for that to happen, get the ball in those guys’ hands, let them do their thing. And as you can see if you look at the stat sheet, a lot of guys touch the ball. It was a good deal of getting the ball out to everybody,” Heinicke said.

In his career, McLaurin has faced the Bills and White just once. In that 2019 outing, McLaurin had four catches and was held to only 39 yards.

More so, the Bills will want to replicate the win they pulled off that day.
