PODCAST: After overcoming second-half woes, is Josh Allen an MVP?

Buffalo Bills podcast following Week 3, 2020 NFL season vs. Los Angeles Rams on quarterback Josh Allen.

The Buffalo Bills left us with another nail-biter finish this weekend, as they defeated the Los Angeles Rams 35-32 in Orchard Park. With a 28-3 deficit in hand for the Bills early in the third quarter, the Rams rallied back to challenge the Bills, scoring 29 unanswered points, but could not finish the game on top.

It certainly left many scratching their heads, as the phrase “28-3” is not one that is kindly used on the team with 28 points. The Bills, however, avoided that ugly stigma with another incredible, yet roller coaster ride of a fourth-quarter comeback. The Bills now have three wins in as many weeks, with a road trip to Las Vegas to play the Raiders next week.

There are certainly some questions about this Bills defense, and the scheme being used after they jumped to the massive lead that they did. How could a team that was ranked in the top-five last year allow such a comeback? It was certainly worrisome, as that put Bills quarterback Josh Allen and the offense in unnecessarily challenging predicaments the last several weeks,

Allen continues to earn a solid reputation amongst his fans and even his biggest critics. Allen has thrown for 300-plus yards in every game this year, and it isn’t too far-fetched to start mentioning Allen in the MVP discussion. It’s still early, and there’s lots of great football to be played, but he’s playing as great as any elite quarterback in the NFL right now.

Bills CB Tre’Davious White would be happy to see Tom Brady leave Patriots

White wants Brady out of the division.

Playing against Tom Brady can take a certain toll on a player. To do it twice a year? That’s a huge challenge. It’s a challenge that Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White has accepted in his first three seasons. And it’s one that he’d be glad to celebrate being over.

“It’s definitely a big deal because he’s been doing it at a high level for that team for a while… For me, I hope he doesn’t go back (to New England),” White told the Athletic’s Jeff Howe when discussing the potential of Brady leaving the Patriots for another team. “For football, it’d be great to see him stay a Patriot and continue to do it that way.”

The 25-year-old understands Brady’s greatness and what it would mean for the game. Of course, it’s unheard of to have a player, especially one as important as Brady, remain in one location with one team for a career spanning 20 seasons. However, it would be beneficial for White and his team to have the quarterback out of the AFC East.

White also doesn’t seem to believe there’s really any truth to the narrative of Brady’s play declining in a significant fashion.

“There’s never a fall-off with Brady,” White told The Athletic. “He’s everything. I think people are so used to him – his standard is set so high that whenever he is a little half under that, they think it’s an off year and they’re panicking. People don’t understand the league changes every year. People change. Stuff changes. Every year is not going to be 100 percent. You can be 97 percent, but that is great. His 97 percent is better than everybody else in the league. He is still the best. Anytime you’ve got to go against him, I guarantee a lot of guys are panicking.”

That’s high praise coming from a guy who, while still young, is considered one of the best up-and-coming cornerbacks in the game. White’s had his issues with the Patriots, including the incident with Rob Gronkowski a few years back. However, those appear to take a backseat when it comes to showing respect to one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game.

Josh Allen will use Bills’ playoff loss to ‘fuel’ him

Allen says the loss to the Texans will only make the Bills hungrier.

Following the Bills 22-19 playoff loss to the Houston Texans quarterback Josh Allen faced the media after a game that simply got away.

“It’s a game we should’ve won, could’ve won,” Allen said. “It sucks. This is a team that fought the entire game. I appreciate how the guys battled today… it’s going to be a long offseason, but we’ll learn from it.”

After coming out firing on offense, in a drive that concluded with Josh Allen catching a touchdown pass from wide receiver John Brown, the Bills offense was held out of the endzone for the remainder of the game.

Thanks to a perfect performance from kicker Stephen Hauschka, the Bills took a 16-0 lead into halftime, but the defense was unable to shutdown the likes of Houston quarterback Deshaun Watston in the second half.

Allen said repeatedly after the game that the offense not converting it’s opportunities was on his shoulders.

“It’s a bitter taste taste… we have to find a way to get six instead of three when we get down there and that’s on me.”

While the Bills season ends in Houston, there is a lot that can be learned from a tough playoff loss like this one and applied to the future.

“I am going to take this into the offseason… let it fuel me and take it from there,” Allen said. “This will hurt and sting for a while, but we’ll move on.”

Part of the Bills success this season has been attributed to the culture head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane are building in Buffalo. That closeness is something Allen feels will help propel them forward.

“I love my teammates, I love the energy they brought today and how they battled… it’s gonna make us hungrier, it sucks that we lost today, but life goes on… I expect this to make us hungrier and come out next year ready to go.”

While it is perfectly normal to feel disappointed in a game that as Allen put it, the Bills could have won, it is also OK to feel optimistic about this team’s future.

With strong leadership in McDermott, close to $90 million in salary cap space for Brandon Beane and several young building blocks in Allen, Tre’Davious White and Tremaine Edmunds (just to name a few,) unlike the last time the Bills made the playoffs, the growth should continue right on into next season. No rebuild, or teardown needed.

While today is undoubtedly painful for Bills fans, it is another step in the process and if Josh Allen and his teammates do indeed use it as fuel, we might all look back on this game one day and point to it as a large part of what ultimately pushed this franchise over the edge.

Bills clinch playoff berth, but have bigger goals

This Bills team wants more than just to qualify for the postseason.

For the second time in the last three seasons, the Buffalo Bills are playoff bound.

Following their 17-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football in Week 15, the Bills clinched at least the fifth-seed in the AFC.

Unlike when the Bills ended their 17-year playoff drought two years ago, this team expects much more out themselves. Much more than just a one and done Wild Card game.

“Everything about it is different,” Defensive End Shaq Lawson told the media after the game. “The whole vibe is different. It’s a 360. (Brandon) Beane and (Sean) McDermott came in and changed it and brought they guys in and it’s paying off right now. Two out of the three years they’ve been here, we’ve been in the playoffs. So, something working… We winning, the culture different. Everybody in the building know what we gotta do and we wanna win a Super Bowl.”

Bills offensive lineman, Dion Dawkins, echoed similar sentiments when speaking in the Bills locker room Sunday night.

“Coach McDermott came in here and he had a team,” Dawkins said. “He had Beane with him… and had a plan. And their plan was to get guys here that can learn, can adapt and can believe in what the coaches are preaching. Three years, two playoffs, it’s special.”

Dawkins made sure to clarify that despite the team’s success, there is still more work to be done.

“Once again, like, we didn’t win the Super Bowl, you know? This is normal now, you know? This is normal. And we’re gonna keep this going and we’re gonna see how how far we can get,” Dawkins said.

Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White, who had a monster game against the Steelers, added that team has to stick with what has gotten them to this point.

“It’s big because we get to go to the playoffs for the second time in three years,” White said. “Before all of us got here it was a 17-year drought. We’ve been building this thing since 2017, since we all got here. I feel like, you know, it’s starting to take a turn, but we just gotta continue to trust the process and just go to work each and every day and just try to be the best that we can be.”

White also stated that past failures in the Bills franchise were not connected to this current group.

“This team is not connected to the past, but we just wanna be that team to pretty much break down those barriers and break those boundaries. We’ve been doing a great job all year just responding to adversity and just, you know, playing total team football,” White said.

The Bills will certainly enjoy clinching a playoff berth tonight, but their sights will quickly shift to the New England Patriots, who they will face on a short week, Saturday afternoon.

At 11-5, the Patriots currently hold a game lead over the 10-4 Bills in the AFC East standings. The Bills would need to beat the Patriots and then the Jets in Week 17 and hope the Dolphins can find a way to beat New England during the final week of the season as well, in order to win the division.

Regardless of where they finish, the Bills will be in the dance, which still takes some getting use to after all of those years of being on the outside looking in. But, as several of the players said after their biggest win of the season, that is no longer good enough. It’s the new normal.
