49ers working out three defensive backs

On Tuesday, the 49ers hosted a trio of defensive backs for a workout.

After suffering their first loss of the season on the road to the Minnesota Vikings, the San Francisco 49ers appear to be looking to bring in some help in the defensive secondary before moving on to a Week 3 contest against Matt Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams.

According to NFL Reporter Aaron Wilson, the 49ers worked out three defensive backs on Tuesday. Tre Herndon, Danny Johnson and Chandon Sullivan worked out for the 49ers, per Wilson.

Herndon, played six seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars before signing with the New York Giants in June. The Giants later released the former Vanderbilt Commodore. The veteran corner has started 34 games over his career with three total interceptions.

Johnson went undrafted out of Southern University in the 2018 draft before playing six seasons with the Washington Commanders. Johnson has recorded 14 pass deflections and one forced fumble in 66 career games with the Commanders.

Sullivan has bounced around the NFL since going undrafted out of Georgia State in 2018. Sullivan has had stops with the Philadelphia Eagles, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings and most recently the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 88 career games, the 28-eight-year-old has notched eight interceptions and two forced fumbles.

Former Jaguars CB signing with Giants

Former Jaguars CB signing with Giants

The Giants are signing former Jaguars cornerback Tre Herndon following his mandatory minicamp tryout with New York, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

Herndon spent the first six seasons of his pro career with Jacksonville after going undrafted and signing with the Jaguars as a free agent following the 2018 NFL draft.

After making the 53-man roster and earning occasional playing time as a rookie, Herndon took over as one of Jacksonville’s starting outside cornerbacks in 2019, succeeding Jalen Ramsey following his early-season trade to the Los Angeles Rams.

Herndon had a career year that season, intercepting three passes, defending 13 and collecting 55 tackles including one for loss over 16 appearances. He started another 12 games in 2020 and tallied 76 tackles with four for loss, one sack and five defended passes, aligning both outside and in the nickel.

Herndon reverted to a depth role in 2021 after re-signing with Jacksonville on a one-year contract that offseason, a practice he repeated in 2022 and 2023. He produced 99 tackles with four for loss, 14 pass breakups and two forced fumbles over 40 games and seven starts in that stretch.

In his NFL career, Herndon has logged 243 tackles with nine for loss, one sack, three interceptions, 32 defended passes and two forced fumbles.

Jacksonville chose not to retain Herndon and released fellow former starting defensive backs, cornerback Darious Williams and safety Rayshawn Jenkins, as the team retooled its secondary this offseason.

In free agency, the Jaguars signed Ronald Darby to replace Williams opposite Tyson Campbell at outside cornerback, and safety Darnell Savage to play both nickel cornerback and on the backend. Second-year safety Antonio Johnson is expected to see an uptick in snaps due to Jenkins’ exit.

Jacksonville also selected cornerbacks Jarrian Jones and Deantre Prince in the third and fifth rounds of the 2024 NFL draft, respectively.

Giants signing veteran CB Tre Herndon

The New York Giants are signing veteran cornerback Tre Herndon following a tryout during minicamp on Tuesday.

After a series of tryouts on Tuesday, the New York Giants have decided to sign veteran cornerback Tre Herndon.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, citing Herndon’s representation, was the first to report the news.

Herndon, 28, originally signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Vanderbilt in 2018. He went on to appear in 83 games (34 starts), recording 243 tackles (186 solo, nine for a loss), two forced fumbles, six QB hits, one sack, 32 passes defensed, and three interceptions.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Herndon had his best season in 2019 when he recorded a career-high 55 tackles, 13 passes defensed, and three interceptions.

In 2023, Herndon recorded an overall Pro Football Focus grade of 70.8, a pass rush grade of 87.0, and a coverage grade of 73.1.

Herndon joins a cornerback room that includes Deonte Banks, Cor’Dale Flott, Nick McCloud, Darnay Holmes, Tre Hawkins, Aaron Robinson, rookie Andru Phillips, and others.

With the signing of Herdon, the Giants now have 91 men on their roster (kicker Jude McAtamney on a roster exemption). The spot was previously vacated by tight end Darren Waller after announcing his NFL retirement.

Giants hosting Tre Herndon, others for tryouts

The New York Giants are hosting multiple players for tryouts including veteran cornerback Tre Herndon III.

With news of the recent retirement of starting tight end Darren Waller, the New York Giants are trying out several veterans at minicamp this week along with several other veterans at other positions.

Head coach Brian Daboll said the team is always trying to improve the roster and have the luxury of some additional cap space with Waller off the roster.

The Giants already have a full tight end room but there is always room for more. Noah Togiai, who was an undrafted free agent out of Oregon State back in 2017, has played in eight NFL games. Former Mississippi State Bulldog Geor’quarius Spivey is also getting a tryout.

Tre Herndon III, a cornerback with 83 games of experience (34 starts) for the Jacksonville Jaguars, will also get a tryout as will 6-foot-7 offensive tackle Kellen Diesch.

In addition to those tryouts, UFL running back Jacob Saylors is in East Rutherford for a visit.

14 pending defensive free agents with ties to the Panthers’ coaching staff

Pro Bowl pass rusher and pending free agent Josh Allen has an early connection with a member of the Carolina coaching staff.

Unlike their staff on offense, the Carolina Panthers didn’t need to touch their defensive coaches going into 2024. But that doesn’t mean they don’t have connections to a few intriguing free agents.

Here are 14 pending defensive free agents, in areas of need, who have ties to Carolina’s coaching staff:

22 Jaguars players set to become free agents in March, ranked

Which impending free agents should the Jaguars focus on bringing back?

The Jacksonville Jaguars spent much of the 2023 offseason retaining their own free agents.

While Jawaan Taylor, Arden Key, Marvin Jones Jr, and Chris Manhertz were among those who left the team, the Jaguars made sure to keep several players, including Andrew Wingard, Dawuane Smoot, Adam Gotsis, and Tre Herndon.

After a disappointing 2023 season, there aren’t as many tough calls to make regarding the more than 20 players set to become free agents in 2024.

Free agency will begin on March 13, but the first decision for the Jaguars will come about a week before that when the franchise tag deadline hits on March 5.

With about two months to sort out their plans, here are the 22 players the Jaguars currently have set to leave the team as free agents:

Jaguars rule out 2, list 7 as questionable vs. Ravens in Week 15

The Jaguars will be without starting defensive backs Tyson Campbell and Andre Cisco on Sunday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be without two starting defensive backs Sunday night when they play the Baltimore Ravens.

On Friday, the team ruled out cornerback Tyson Campbell and safety Andre Cisco. Second-year cornerback Montaric “Buster” Brown will likely fill in for Campbell and veteran safety Andrew “Dewey” Wingard will probably step in for Cisco.

Another seven Jaguars players are questionable for the Week 15 primetime contest.

Both Jamal Agnew and Christian Braswell are still on injured reserve and had their 21-day practice windows opened earlier this month. If either is available Sunday, that’ll likely be revealed Saturday when the Jaguars decide whether or not they’ll move one or both of them to the active roster.

It’d be a surprise if veteran defensive back Tre Herndon is unavailable after Doug Pederson said earlier Friday that he has cleared concussion protocol and “should be good to go.”

For Baltimore, only two players are questionable and all eyes are on the status of Kyle Hamilton.

During a press conference Friday, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said that Hamilton is “in a good place right now,” but also said “we’ll see how he does the next couple days.” The second-year safety has two interceptions, three sacks, and nine tackles for a loss so far in 2023.

11 Jaguars players limited, none sit out Thursday practice

The Jaguars had everyone on the practice field Thursday, although 11 were limited.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had full attendance at their Thursday practice with defensive backs Tyson Campbell and Andre Cisco back on the field after sitting out Wednesday.

It wasn’t exactly a healthy day of work for the team ahead of a Week 15 game against the Baltimore Ravens, though. Jacksonville listed 11 players as limited, including Campbell and Cisco.

During a Week 14 loss to the Cleveland Browns, the Jaguars were without Folorunso Fatukasi, Tre Herndon, Walker Little, and Brenton Strange. All four of those players are still limited in practice, but appear well on track to return to the field sooner rather than later.

Quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and C.J. Beathard again appeared on the injury report, but both were full participants.

Like Wednesday, the Ravens had an exceedingly brief injury report with only one player limited Thursday.

Baltimore safety Kyle Hamilton was wearing a brace on his injured left knee in practice and told reporters Wednesday that his status for Week 15 is still “up in the air.”

Jaguars elevate CB Tevaughn Campbell, TE Josh Pederson for Week 14

The Jaguars added some cornerback and tight end depth with a few players dealing with injuries.

The Jacksonville Jaguars elevated Tevaughn Campbell and Josh Pederson from the practice squad for a Week 14 game against the Cleveland Browns.

Campbell, 30, joined the Jaguars during the 2022 season when he was signed off the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad. In his first season in Jacksonville, Campbell appeared in five games and made three tackles.

This year, he has been elevated from the practice squad two times before. The maximum is three, so the Jaguars will need to sign Campbell to the active roster if they hope to use him again in 2023 after Sunday.

Jacksonville’s cornerback depth will be tested in Week 14 with a few players dealing with injuries. Tre Herndon is out due to a concussion and Christian Braswell isn’t yet ready to return from injured reserve. The team will also be without Tyson Campbell, who was downgraded to out due to a quad injury suffered during a rough outing Monday.

Tevaughn Campbell previously spent four seasons in the Canadian Football League before stints with the New York Jets, Los Angeles Chargers, and Raiders.

Pederson, son of head coach Doug Pederson, played in his first ever NFL game last week due to an injury suffered by rookie tight end Brenton Strange.

Jaguars list 12 players on lengthy Wednesday injury report

The Jaguars suddenly have a lengthy injury report after a rough Monday night.

A Jacksonville Jaguars team that has been fortunate to avoid injuries for nearly two whole seasons is suddenly facing an avalanche of them heading into Week 14.

On Wednesday, the Jaguars listed 12 players on their first injury report before a road game against the Cleveland Browns.

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence suffered what looked like a gruesome ankle injury Monday night, but said Wednesday that he’s feeling “a lot better” and he’s “trying to progress towards hopefully playing” against the Browns.

Backup quarterback C.J. Beathard is also on the injury report, but said that there’s no concern about his availability Sunday.

While Jacksonville has a lengthy report, the Browns’ was even longer Wednesday with 16 players listed.

Three of the Browns’ players who didn’t practice were “not injury related” rest days and offensive lineman Geron Christian practiced in full, but that still leaves another 12 who were out or limited. That group included receiver Amari Cooper who was out due to a concussion and ribs injury.
