Jaguars’ 13-year streak without compensatory picks likely ends in 2024

The Jaguars weren’t awarded a compensatory pick for a 13th straight year, but that streak probably won’t reach 14.

The NFL awarded compensatory draft picks Wednesday and, like every year, the Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t get any.

While the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams led the way with four new picks each in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Jaguars haven’t been awarded an extra selection since they received a sixth-round pick in 2010.

The reason is pretty simple: Jacksonville’s recent draft history has been atrocious.

Compensatory picks are awarded to teams that suffer net losses in free agency, and the reality is that the Jaguars haven’t had many departing players good enough to cash in as free agents elsewhere. When there’s been exceptions to that norm, Jacksonville has negated the losses by spending big in free agency to fill a roster hampered by — you guessed it — bad drafting.

This offseason looks like it’ll be much different.

Rather than hunting for players on the open market, the Jaguars have focused their efforts on retaining their own. In recent weeks the team has re-signed C.J. Beathard and JaMycal Hasty, and it used the franchise tag to keep Evan Engram.

While there’s a chance the Jaguars retain more of their players before free agency begins next week, they’ve also run into a problem reserved for good teams. There’s too many good players to keep and not enough money to go around.

Starting right tackle Jawaan Taylor appears headed for the open market, and he’s currently set to be joined in free agency by Arden Key, Dawuane Smoot, and Tre Herndon, among others.

It’s possible the Jaguars sign a player or two on the market, but they won’t be going after the big fish. And they certainly can’t afford to give someone the kind of money that Taylor appears set to receive.

Jacksonville’s remarkable compensatory-less streak will likely end with at least one pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and that’s a sign that things are changing in Duval.

Darious Williams: ‘I’m in my position now’ as an outside CB

Darious Williams has locked down opposing receivers since moving outside in Week 14.

When the Jacksonville Jaguars began the 2022 season, they had Tyson Campbell and Shaquill Griffin starting at cornerback with free agent acquisition Darious Williams playing out of the slot. It was, quite frankly, a situation that was not good enough to slow opposing offenses.

After Griffin landed on injured reserve in October, the Jaguars secondary got even worse. With Tre Herndon and Montaric Brown both getting a turn in the starting lineup, opposing quarterbacks picked on whoever played on the opposite side of Campbell.

Then in Week 14, the Jaguars tried moving Williams to the outside and — voila — it was a brand new defense. In the last five weeks of the regular season, Williams was credited with allowing just six receptions for 46 yards.

“That’s my position,” Williams told Mia O’Brien of 1010XL about the position swap. “Obviously, that’s where I make my plays at. I just love the feeling of being out on an island. The feeling of competing. Nickel is a little bit different, box tackling and all of that. But I’m in my position now.”

With the combination of Campbell and Williams locking down receivers on the outside, they’ve also seen much better play out of Herndon, who moved to the slot.

“Tre is a hell of a nickel,” Williams said of Herndon. “He’s a dual corner, at the same time, but just the way he moves, he’s physical, he’s a really good nickel.”

With a reconfigured Jaguars secondary leading the way, Jacksonville didn’t allow any of its last five opponents to reach 250 passing yards. The team’s last three opponents — the Houston Texans, New York Jets, and Tennessee Titans — finished below 200 passing yards, although all three teams entered with lackluster quarterback situations.

The new-look defensive backfield in Jacksonville will get its first real test when the Justin Herbert-passing attack of the Los Angeles Chargers comes to town Saturday.

Ravens vs. Jaguars inactives: Tre Herndon a healthy scratch

Tre Herndon is a healthy scratch against the Ravens.

Jacksonville Jaguars fifth-year cornerback Tre Herndon was a surprising healthy scratch for the team Sunday morning ahead of a Week 12 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.

Herndon, 26, has started 30 career games for the Jaguars and saw significant play time this season when Shaquill Griffin went to injured reserve. But after Patrick Mahomes threw four touchdown passes against the Jaguars secondary in Week 10, Herndon is inactive after the Week 11 bye.

With Tyson Campbell starting on one side of the field and Darious Williams covering the slot, seventh-round rookie Montaric “Buster” Brown is set to see the most significant action of his young career against the Ravens.

Baltimore ruled out starting safety Kyle Hamilton against the Jaguars.

Hamilton was one of a handful of Ravens players who were ruled questionable for Sunday. Running back Gus Edwards and wide receivers Demarcus Robinson and Devin Duvernay are all set to play, despite being listed as questionable Friday. Isaiah Likely was downgraded from questionable to out on Saturday.

Doug Pederson: Shaquill Griffin is the starter when he returns

Doug Pederson says he isn’t going to put Tre Herndon ahead of Shaquill Griffin on the depth chart.

Shaquill Griffin was out of action Sunday due to a back injury, one week after he was torched by Indianapolis Colts quarterback Matt Ryan.

In his place, fifth-year cornerback Tre Herndon stepped into the starting lineup against the New York Giants. After allowing a touchdown pass on the opening drive, Herndon settled in and played well.

But was his performance enough to keep Herndon ahead of Griffin on the depth chart? Jaguars coach Doug Pederson pumped the brakes on that notion on Monday.

“I think if [Griffin]’s healthy, you can’t discredit that,” Pederson said. “Shaq obviously is the starter at that position, but Tre’s done a nice job. If Shaq weren’t able to go, he’d obviously take that spot.”

Griffin, 27, told reporters that he’s been dealing with a back issue since camp and it was aggravated during the loss to the Colts. He didn’t practice at all last week and was ruled out Friday.

The Jaguars added Griffin, who was a Pro Bowler with the Seattle Seahawks in 2019, on a three-year, $40 million deal in 2021. Herndon joined the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in 2018.

5 Jaguars players to watch vs. Giants in Week 7

These five Jaguars players will be important Sunday if the team hopes to snap its three-game losing streak.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have their back against the wall after three straight losses. An exciting start to the season had the team atop the AFC South standings, but the team’s slide now has the Jaguars stuck playing from behind.

To get back on track, the Jaguars will have to do what five teams were unable to do in the first six weeks: beat the New York Giants.

While a 5-1 record suggests the Giants have been a dominant team to start the year, the stats tell a different story. New York has found a way to win games the numbers say they should’ve lost.

That’s a trap Jacksonville keeps managing to fall into this season. Here are five Jaguars players who can help make sure the team doesn’t do that again in Week 7:

Six Jaguars poised for big performances vs. Steelers

These six players are set to prove that preseason football is anything but boring when the #Jaguars take on the #Steelers on Saturday night.

Though the outcome of this game is inconsequential to the Jacksonville Jaguars’ hopes of redemption in 2022, there are several players who could make their case for a roster spot with big performances against the Steelers. For teams in the middle of a rebuild, expectations are relatively low for anyone under contract who isn’t due a bunch of guaranteed money, and the door to significant playing time can swing wide open at any time.

Here are six Jaguars who are set to make their case for a roster spot against Pittsburgh in Jacksonville’s third preseason game:

Jaguars Week 4 injury report: OT Cam Robinson upgraded to full on Tuesday

Jags LT Cam Robinson was upgraded to full participation Tuesday after being limited Monday.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had a few changes to their injury report Tuesday as left tackle Cam Robinson was upgraded to full participation after being limited Monday. That puts him on track to take the field for “Thursday Night Football” as the Jags will be traveling to Cincinnati.

The only other change for the Jags on the injury report was the addition of kicker Josh Lambo. The veteran wasn’t injured but had a personal matter to address.

Cornerback Tre Herndon remained a full participant Tuesday, which is a good sign for his awaited return after spraining his MCL Week 1 of the preseason. Defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris (ankle) and offensive lineman Andrew Norwell (ankle), remained limited just as they were on Monday.

For information on the Bengals’ injuries, here is some insight from Bengals Wire.

Jags announce Week 3 inactives: CBs Tre Herndon, CJ Henderson among 5 who will sit

This week, there are several key members from the Jags’ defense who won’t be playing against the Cardinals. Meanwhile, Deandre Hopkins is suiting up for Arizona.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be without starting cornerback CJ Henderson and defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris. Both players were ruled questionable on the final injury report after being limited in practice.

The other player who was ruled questionable on Friday, cornerback Tre Herndon, will also be out. This means his 2021 regular season debut will be put off for at least another week after he sprained his MCL during Week 1’s game of the preseason.

Joining the three on the inactives list will be rookie pass-rusher Jordan Smith and rookie defensive lineman Jay Tufele. Both didn’t surface in the status column for the Jags and were full participants Friday. Neither has made an appearance in the regular season (though Smith has been injured) and with both being healthy this week, fans will be questioning the Jags’ mindset when it comes to their selections in the draft.

On the Cardinals’ end, DeAndre Hopkins, who didn’t practice this week due to a rib injury, will suit up. Cornerbacks Byron Murphy and Marco Wilson, who also surfaced as questionable options on Friday, will play as well.

The Cardinals’ full list of inactives are as follows:

  • QB Chris Streveler
  • RB Eno Benjamin
  • CB Tay Gowan
  • CB Luq Barcoo
  • WR Andy Isabella
  • OT Kelvin Beachum
  • OLB Victor Dimukeje

More on their inactives can be found on Cards Wire.

Jags Week 3 final injury report: Henderson, Herndon, and Robertson-Harris ruled questionable

Three players were ruled questionable on Week 3’s final injury report for the Jags. Those players were CB Tre Herndon, CB CJ Henderson, and DL Roy Robertson-Harris.

The Jacksonville Jaguars could be without two players who’ve started for them in their first two games in cornerback CJ Henderson (groin) and defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris (ankle). Both players were two of the three players ruled questionable on the final injury report for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.

The only other player to join the two in the status column was veteran corner Tre Herndon (knee), who was also ruled questionable.

Of the three, Henderson could be the most significant blow (if he can’t play) when looking at the receivers the Cardinals have in DeAndre Hopkins (who is a game-time decision), A.J. Green, Christian Kirk, and Rondale Moore. After missing practice on Thursday, the second-year cornerback was able to practice as a limited participant Friday, so he shouldn’t be counted out, though groin injuries are tricky.

If Herndon is able to return, it could be huge for the Jags as he’s one of their most experienced cornerbacks. That could also help with a decision on Henderson, too, if needed. Herndon, who sprained his MCL during Week 1 of the preseason and hasn’t played in the regular season, has practice as a limited participant the last two weeks but has yet to be a full participant in the regular season.

With two cornerbacks ruled questionable, the Jags signed veteran cornerback Nevin Lawson this week. If needed they also have Brandon Rusnak and Lorenzo Burns on their practice squad.

Robertson-Harris surfaced on the injury report after Sunday’s game against Denver. If he can’t go, the Jags have veteran Adam Gotsis as an option as well as fourth-year player Taven Bryan.

Jags announce Week 2 inactives: Pass-rushers Jordan Smith, Lerentee McCray ruled OUT

Three of the four players from the Jags’ final injury report have been ruled OUT against Denver. Meanwhile, the Broncos will be without a starting guard.

The list of inactives for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ Week 2 game against the Denver Broncos is almost identical to last weeks. Cornerback Tre Herndon was already ruled out Friday, but the team announced that pass-rushers Jordan Smith and Lerentee McCray will join him after both being ruled questionable.

The three other players who will join them are players who were inactive last week in offensive tackle Walker Little, tight end Jacob Hollister, and defensive tackle Jay Tufele. Of the group, fans were hoping to see the two rookies (Tufele and Little) become active this week, but it appears their debuts will be put on hold.

As for the Broncos, they announced that fourth-year pass-rusher Bradley Chubb (ankle) will be active, giving them their dynamic duo of him and Miller. However, the will be without their starting guard in Graham Glasgow (illness).

The rest of their inactives are as follows:
