Top 3 statistical performers from Warriors’ win vs. Lakers

Here are the top three statistical performers from the Golden State Warriors win over the Los Angeles Lakers

The Golden State Warriors secured a big win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday. Steph Curry led the way with 32 points, adding another impressive performance to his already fantastic season. The victory ensured the Warriors returned from the All-Star break in the best fashion possible and helped them continue working toward their goal of avoiding the play-in tournament.

Klay Thompson continued in his new role off the bench, and Andrew Wiggins once again impressed in what is becoming a rapid resurgence following a difficult start to the season. Steve Kerr‘s team appears to be finding new gear at the perfect time.

Golden State is back in action on Friday when they will face the Charlotte Hornets in a contest that should result in another win for Golden State, assuming they continue performing at their current level. However, before we focus on that game, let’s look at who played well for Golden State on Thursday. Here are the Warriors’ top three statistical performers.

Trayce Jackson-Davis doesn’t feel pressure of playing alongside Warriors’ vets

The Warriors rookie had 17 points on Thursday in a win over the Lakers, his second game in double figures over his last three appearances.

Trayce Jackson-Davis turned in an efficient performance on Thursday off the bench and helped the Golden State Warriors defeat the Los Angeles Lakers at Chase Center.

Jackson-Davis produced 17 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two assists in nearly 15 minutes of work in the 128-110 victory. He went 8-of-10 from the field to finish with his second game in double figures over his last three appearances.

The 57th pick scored 13 straight points in the second quarter and made six out of his first seven shots. His productive run prompted coach Steve Kerr to keep him in the game to ride his hot stretch.

He didn’t even realize he had scored that many points.

I didn’t necessarily know I had 13 that quick. I knew I scored like three or four times in a row, but I wasn’t really paying attention. I was actually upset because I wasn’t doing what I was supposed to be doing on the defensive end with the coverages, so I was mad about that.

Jackson-Davis has played sporadically this season with the Warriors. However, he seems to provide an instant lift with his energy and production off the bench when called upon, which was on display on Thursday against the Lakers.

The 24-year-old is averaging 6.7 points and four rebounds on 69.3% shooting from the field in 41 games with the Warriors. He leads the team in blocked shots (34) and ranks second in field-goal percentage and eighth in rebounding among rookies.

He has earned praise from the team throughout the season, given his ability to play mistake-free and affect games on both ends of the court. Perhaps most importantly: Jackson-Davis has already earned the trust of his teammates.

Jackson-Davis has formed a nice duo with Klay Thompson, as the two have connected dozens of times on the court in the second unit. He is also expected to play with Chris Paul more once the future Hall of Famer returns from injury.

He feels no pressure playing next to such established players.

“I think it is the opposite,” Jackson-Davis said. “When they instill confidence in me, it just makes me want to raise my game to another level. Obviously, you don’t want to let them down, but at the same time, they give you confidence, and usually, half the time, they draw so much attention that (you’re) getting a dunk or layup. It is just about finishing and concentrating.”

Rookie Wire Power Rankings: Wemby retakes No. 1 amid minutes restriction

Rookie Wire took a look at the top first-year players over the last two weeks of the 2023-24 season.

The schedule has reached the midway point of the 2023-24 season, as most teams around the NBA have played in at least half of their games to this point.

The halfway mark of the season serves as a milestone of sorts for the rookie class. Players who have appeared in most of their games have likely already surpassed their previous career high for games in a season, given that college teams typically play fewer than 40 games a year.

As cliche as it may be, the group could soon begin to hit the infamous rookie wall with the rigors of the schedule and other obstacles factoring into play. In other words: The second half will serve as a litmus test to see who is prepared for the stretch run.

To make sense of it all, we looked at the best recent performances of these first-year players and ranked them in the Rookie Wire Power Rankings. The rankings are not for Rookie of the Year purposes but to illustrate the best players week to week.

Rookie Wire Power Rankings: Scoot Henderson is proving himself as a top pick

The calendar has flipped to 2024, and the rookie class is finding its groove on the court; several first-year players are performing at a high level this season.

The top two picks, Victor Wembanyama and Brandon Miller, along with the second pick from 2022, Chet Holmgren, have had strong starts to their careers. Scoot Henderson, the third selection last year, also looks to be settling in after recovering from an ankle injury.

Further down the draft board, several other players have had great moments with their respective teams. These players have produced on teams in the playoff picture and on teams likely headed toward the lottery.

To make sense of it all, we looked at the best recent performances of these first-year players and ranked them in the Rookie Wire Power Rankings. The rankings are not for Rookie of the Year purposes but to illustrate the best players week to week.

Trayce-Jackson Davis discusses Steve Kerr’s coaching style

The Golden State Warriors rookie is enjoying his first season under Steve Kerr.

Steve Kerr has achieved incredible success since taking over as the Golden State Warriors head coach in 2014. During his tenure in the Bay Area, Kerr has coached some of the most talented players of this generation. As such, he’s learned how to manage different personalities and egos.

That ability to reach and understand his players has impressed rookie big man Trayce Jackson-Davis. During a recent interview with “Steiny & Guru” on 95.7 The Game, the rookie noted how Kerr is always on hand to talk with his players and help them navigate whatever situation they’re dealing with.

“Coach Kerr is a player’s coach and whatever we need, he’s always helping us through situations,” Jackson-Davis said.

Jackson-Davis has clearly benefited from Kerr’s coaching style. The second-round draft pick has slowly established himself as a key piece of Golden State’s bench rotation, and he has impressed whenever he’s taken the court.

In 20 games, Jackson-Davis is averaging 4.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game. He shot 65% from the field. However, in his last five games, he is averaging a solid 11 points and 8.8 rebounds. It may be a smaller sample size, but those numbers point toward the growth and role development that Jackson-Davis has experienced during his first few months in the NBA.

Kerr’s ability to nurture and develop young talent has been questioned in recent years. However, this season, with the development of Jackson-Davis, Brandin Podziemski, and Jonathan Kuminga, it’s clear the veteran coach’s methods are starting to pay dividends.

Watch: Steph Curry finds Trayce Jackson-Davis at the rim for alley-oop vs. Nuggets

Steph Curry pulled out his best quarterback impression with a precise pass to the rim for Trayce Jackson-Davis against the Nuggets.

Before Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers meet the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football, Steph Curry pulled out his best quarterback impression on Christmas Day against the Denver Nuggets.

While dribbling outside the 3-point line, Curry pitched a precisely placed lob at the rim right into the hands of rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis for an alley-oop in the third quarter. In a back-and-forth battle against the defending champs, Curry’s completion to Jackson-Davis trimmed Denver’s lead down to only three points.

Trayce Jackson-Davis shares thoughts on being picked late in the draft

The Golden State Warriors rookie was shocked to be taken so low in the NBA draft.

Trayce Jackson-Davis was selected with the 57th pick in the 2023 NBA draft. Despite his late selection, he has established himself as an important part of the Golden State Warriors roster.

The rookie big man has also impressed over the past two games, where he has recorded back-to-back double-doubles when coming off the bench.

Following his latest performance, Jackson-Davis discussed his late draft selection with the media. He discussed how he was surprised to slide so far down the draft even though he felt he had improved his all-around game during his collegiate career.

“I was very surprised, honestly,” Jackson-Davis said. “I thought that in my senior year of college, I had added a lot to my game, whether it be the passing, the blocking shots, rebounding at a high level, or finishing. Basically everything.”

Against the Wizards, Jackson-Davis provided 10 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 block in 24 minutes of playing time. He shot 71.4% from the field, as his size and scoring ability gave the Warriors’ second unit an interior presence.

Jackson-Davis is establishing himself as a key member of Steve Kerr‘s rotation. He is slowly seeing more playing time and is consistently making an impact when given the opportunity. If the rookie continues to play at his current level, he will be another impressive young talent the Warriors have at their disposal moving forward.

Steve Kerr confirms Trayce Jackson-Davis has earned a bigger role

The rookie big man has earned a bigger role within the Golden State Warriors rotation thanks to his stellar play.

Trayce Jackson-Davis has earned a bigger role within the Golden State Warriors rotation. Steve Kerr committed to finding more playing time for the rookie big man following his double-double performance against the Boston Celtics. Jackson-Davis managed to record three blocks during his team’s win, with two of them being on All-NBA wing Jaylen Brown.

Speaking to the media following the Warriors game, Kerr was asked about Jackson-Davis’ minutes. The veteran head coach labeled the rookie as the “player of the game” before sharing how “he’s going to play” and that he will be in the rotation moving forward.

“He was tremendous,” Kerr said. “He was the player of the game. There were several huge plays. Obviously, Steph’s shot being number one. Trayce’s block on Jaylen Brown. Tryace was the one who shifted everything. Plus 25 in his minutes. Second great game in a row. You can see the impact he makes, so he’s gonna play. He’s gonna be in the lineup.”

Jackson-Davis ended the contest with 10 points, 13 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3 locks, shooting 71.4% from the field. He has been impressive when given the opportunity to take to the court and has now parlayed those performances into additional minutes moving forward.

Interestingly, Jackson-Davis is the second rookie to earn a bigger role in the Warriors rotation this season. Brandin Podziemski also made use of the playing time he was given and managed to carve out a starting role for himself.

Golden State has now won three straight games, and their younger talent has been leading, providing the energy and spark the roster had been missing for much of the season. It will be interesting to see how the team fares when they face the Washington Wizards on Friday (Dec. 22.)
