Pair of former Wisconsin football players secure NFL mini camp invites

The 2024 NFL Draft has come and gone and a pair of undrafted former Wisconsin Badgers football players secured rookie minicamp invitations this week.

Offensive lineman Michael Furtney was invited to both the Bills and Packers’ rookie mini camps, while safety Travian Blaylock was invited to join the Bears at their rookie minicamp.

Furtney spent the final two years of his five campaigns in Madison operating as the team’s starting right guard while he finished his UW career having played in 56 total contests, which ranks fourth all-time in program history. He’ll now get a chance to prove himself in a pair of camps ahead of the 2024 NFL season.

Blaylock wrapped up a four-year Wisconsin tenure this past season, playing in all 13 games, recording seven total tackles and pass breakup during the 2023 campaign. He is the son of former Chiefs and Jets running back Derrick Blaylock (2001-2007) and he’ll look to carve out his own NFL career.

Two more former Wisconsin Badgers invited to NFL local prospect days

Will either of these former Wisconsin Badgers have NFL careers?

Former Wisconsin Badgers safety Travian Blaylock and cornerback Jason Maitre received invites to NFL local prospect days, Blaylock by the Green Bay Packers and Maitre by the New England Patriots, according to a report from KPRC’s Aaron Wilson.

The news comes on the heels of former Badgers outside linebacker C.J. Goetz also receiving an invitation to the Packers’ local prospect tryout.

NFL teams’ local prospect days are designed for collegiate players who are not projected to be selected in the upcoming NFL Draft, and finished their careers somewhere near a team’s facilities. Blaylock’s career in Madison, Wisconsin is close to the Packers’ facilities in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Maitre, meanwhile, played five seasons at Boston College before transferring to Wisconsin — making the New England Patriots the closest NFL team.

Neither Blaylock nor Maitre were invited to the recent NFL Combine. Each participated in a pro day — Blaylock at Wisconsin and Maitre at Boston College. Both are projected to be signed as undrafted free agents.

These tryouts give each player a valuable chance to showcase their skills infront of interested NFL teams that are always searching for under-the-radar talent.

Report: Badgers safety Travian Blaylock tore his ACL

Report: Wisconsin’s projected starting safety tore his ACL:

According to a report from Jessie Temple of The Athletic, Badgers starting safety Travian Blaylock tore his right ACL during spring football practice back in April.

Entering his fifth year with the program, Blaylock was in position to earn the starting spot next to John Torchio following the departures of last season’s starting safety tandem Collin Wilder and Scott Nelson.

According to PFF, the 5-foot-11, 205-pound safety appeared in 13 games and registered 20 tackles in 140 total defensive snaps.

Muskego, Wisconsin native Hunter Wohler is expected to assume Blaylock’s starting spot with the first-team defense next to Torchio as the Badgers head into fall camp.
