6 players the Chargers should consider trading for

Identifying a few players who would make sense for the Los Angeles Chargers via trade.

The Chargers have been hit with injuries to key players, but it’s safe to say their roster is still solid. Nonetheless, a couple of position groups could be revamped as we near the halfway point of the season.

With that in mind, let’s identify a few players who would make sense for Los Angeles via trade, with the deadline quickly approaching on November 1.

Raiders deny Josh Jacobs trade rumors

Las Vegas Raiders trade rumors swirling about Josh Jacobs!

Rumors have been swirling all throughout the NFL that former Alabama Crimson Tide running back, [autotag]Josh Jacobs[/autotag], may be available for trades for the Raiders. The Raiders declined to pick up Jacobs’s fifth-year option this off-season, making him a free agent after the 2022 season.

NFL Network reporter, Ian Rapoport, doesn’t think that Jacobs’ will be going anywhere anytime soon saying, “The Raiders are not trying to trade Josh Jacobs. He is their best running back and rarely do you see teams trade away their best player at any position.”

Jacobs is only owed a little over two million dollars this season, which isn’t much of a hit at all for the team.

The Raiders used their No. 24 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft to select Jacobs, and he has been a massive hit so far. Through three seasons in Las Vegas, Jacobs has 732 carries 3087 yards for 4.2 yards per carry and 28 touchdowns.

It will be interesting to see how the Raiders handle Jacobs in the coming months.

NFL insider: Cowboys-Seahawks trading Russell Wilson for Dak Prescott is ‘laughable’

Cowboys fans may have thought the franchise tag, long-term contract back-and-forth between the front office and quarterback Dak Prescott couldn’t get more muddied. And then Russell Wilson entered the chat.

Thursday’s announcement was indeed a blockbuster: the Seahawks quarterback would reportedly entertain a trade out of Seattle, but only to one of four teams, one of them being Dallas. After the initial frenzy lit up sports media, though, and once the nuts and bolts of such a potential swap were really considered, cooler heads may be prevailing. In fact, one reputable NFL insider is going so far as to call the idea of a Wilson-to Dallas deal “laughable.”

Jane Slater of NFL Network is as tapped in to the Cowboys as just about any reporter in the business. And she was spot-on when she said on-air Friday, “It’s the offseason; fans always want a bone to chew on.”

Make no mistake, the 32-year-old Wilson- eight-time Pro Bowler, Super Bowl XLVIII winner, and reigning Walter Payton Man of the Year- is an intriguing possibility. For practically any team in the league.

Never mind that Cowboys ownership is still saying all the right things about Prescott being their quarterback of the future. Forget for a moment that Prescott has repeatedly said he wants to remain with the team. Both sides are willing, it seems. It is simply coming down to numbers.

But even playing the hypothetical game (because what else would football fans do all offseason?), Slater and many of her colleagues are downplaying any notion of Wilson actually heading to Dallas.

First, Prescott would need to agree to be traded away and sign his franchise tag tender to facilitate the move. Possible, but that would be his concession good time with the Cowboys is officially over.

Then there’s the price tag, no small matter. If a swap of quarterbacks wasn’t enough, Dallas would have to move Prescott elsewhere and pay for Wilson in draft capital.

It’s been reported Seattle could be looking for as many as three first-round picks in exchange for Wilson. That would effectively ground any Cowboys rebuilding efforts for a long time, and 2020 clearly exposed multiple areas in Dallas where a rebuild is desperately needed.

But even if Jerry and Stephen Jones decide Wilson is worth making the move, what about Seattle?

As Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News points out, “If [Wilson] is traded before June 1, the Seahawks would assume a $39 million charge of dead money against their 2021 cap.”

And on top of that, they would still have to pay Prescott the market rate for a franchise quarterback, the very figure that the Cowboys and Prescott are quibbling over now.

The debate in Dallas is over paying $40 million or $41 million or even $42 million a year for a quarterback; imagine Seattle suddenly shelling out $61 million a year on the position.

But all of that may be a moot point, Slater says, because the Cowboys and Seahawks have a recent history of not playing well together regarding personnel.

“You had [Seahawks safety] Earl Thomas, a few years ago, who openly campaigned that he wanted to come to the Dallas Cowboys,” she reminded viewers. This was 2017-2018, when the Cowboys were arguably just a safety away from taking the next step.

“The Cowboys were ready to go all-in, and Seattle made it so costly that they didn’t.”

“Then you had [the Jets’] Jamal Adams,” Slater continued,” who also wanted to come to Dallas. Was also costly. The Cowboys were also, at that time, looking for just that one little piece. Seattle comes in, and they pick him up.”

Don’t forget, too, that just this past season, Seattle tried to talk the Cowboys into giving up on Aldon Smith. “The Cowboys, because it was the Seahawks,” explained Slater, “said no.”

Russell Wilson wearing the star may be an alluring thought for some fans who have forgotten how exceptional Dak Prescott is when he’s healthy. And maybe it’s tempting to want the team to simply “blow it all up” over the fiasco that their negotiations with No. 4 have become.

But a Prescott-for-Wilson deal would handicap the Cowboys’ roster, decimate the Seahawks’ finances, and require two organizations who are currently feuding to play nice.

“Not only do I not think this is happening,” Slater says, “I did go ahead and check that with one of my team sources. They equally found the scenario ‘laughable.'”

Report: The Mavs reached out to Warriors to gauge interest in a Kristaps Porzingis trade

According to Ian Begley of SNY, the Mavericks have reached out to the Golden State Warriors to “gauge interest” in a Kristaps Porzingis trade

With the Dallas Mavericks dropping to 14-15 to start the 2020-21 season, the team could be involved in the trade market.

According to Ian Begley of SNY, the Mavericks have reached out to the Golden State Warriors to gauge interest in a Kristaps Porzingis trade. Outside of Porzingis, there have been no other details about potential targets in the rumored deal.

Via SNY:

The Dallas Mavericks have reached out to the Golden State Warriors to gauge interest in a Kristaps Porzingis trade, sources tell SNY’s Ian Begley.

With the Warriors boasting talented rookie prospect James Wiseman and a pair of potential first-round picks in the 2021 NBA draft, Golden State could have the capital teams are interested in at the trade deadline. As the Warriors sit 16-15, it’s a mystery how Bob Myers and Steve Kerr could handle the trade deadline.

Via @SNYtv on Twitter:

After leaving the New York Knicks via a blockbuster trade in 2019, Porzingis has averaged 20.4 points on 43.8% shooting from the field with 9.2 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 31.4 minutes in a season and a half with the Dallas Mavericks. However, the Latvian’s time in Dallas has been limited to 74 games due to injury.

Prior to joining Luka Doncic and the Mavericks, the 25-year-old earned a nod to the NBA All-Star Game in 2018, averaging a career-high 22.7 points on 43.9% shooting from the field with 6.6 rebounds and 2.4 blocks in 32.4 minutes with the New York Knicks.

The 2021 trade deadline is March 25.

Jets reportedly targeting La’el Collins; should Cowboys say no?

The Jets reportedly may be interested in La’el Collins in return for Jamal Adams, but is that too steep a price for the Cowboys to pay?

It’s no secret that Jets safety Jamal Adams would rather play next season in Dallas than in New York. Obviously, the Cowboys would love to add the All-Pro to their secondary.

So what’s the holdup? The Jets’ understandably high asking price is still the hindrance for now. A few short months ago, the Jets reportedly wanted one of the two future Hall of Fame offensive linemen- Tyron Smith or Zack Martin- in return for Adams. Cowboys legend Michael Irvin once revealed that the Jets required a first and third round pick for their young star. Now, a week after their disgruntled safety officially requested a trade, the Jets may have their eyes on a different Cowboys lineman: La’el Collins.

This news was first brought to light by Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline, who writes, “I’m told right now that the player the Jets would ask for in a trade for Adams would be right tackle La’el Collins. That’s the player that they want. That’s the player that they’re going to target…If you’re a Jets fan, you know one thing – you can’t start the season with Chuma Edoga starting at right tackle.”

Collins doesn’t have the pedigree of the two Dallas stalwarts mentioned above, but he is arguably just as valuable when you factor in his age, contract, and his improving on-field play.

In September of 2019, Collins signed a five-year deal with an annual salary of $10 million. The 26-year old would go on to have the best season of his career, and establish himself as one of the top right tackles in the league. Collins’ contract extension is set to keep him in Dallas through 2024 and what seems like his prime, making his yearly $10 million deal a massive steal for the cap-conscious Cowboys.

Adams, on the other hand, requires an immediate and lofty contract extension, as he enters the last year of his current deal. The contract he is reportedly seeking would land just north of $15 million annually, making Adams the highest paid safety ever. Will the already two-time Pro Bowler be worth this massive pay raise? Most likely, as Adams is just 24 years old, coming off a first team All-Pro campaign a year ago, and should only continue to improve.

In the offseason, Dallas signed Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to replace Jeff Heath, and  Xavier Woods has shown signs that he can be a starter in the NFL, but there is no question Adams would be a substantial upgrade over the two current Cowboys safeties.

As far as tackle goes, there is no clear replacement for Collins on the Cowboys roster. Connor Williams played tackle in college and could slide over to fill the role. Brandon Knight was a decent fill-in during his one start at tackle a year ago, but shouldn’t be trusted as more than a backup at this time. Tyron Smith will continue to lock down the left side of the line, but with his injury history, it’s hard to tell how many years he has left in the tank. Losing Collins now would be a nearly irreplaceable blow to the Cowboys’ offensive line, which was responsible for a league-low eight sacks a year ago.

There are two real questions in front of the Cowboys management. One, would Adams improve the Dallas defense enough to justify trading their emerging right tackle and his team-friendly deal plus whatever draft compensation the Jets would require along with Collins? And two, if a trade is somehow made, does the contract extension of Adams put Dallas in too tough of a spot financially?

Report: Jamal Adams, Jets reach impasse; could Cowboys come calling again?

The on-again, off-again courtship could continue as talks between the Jets and their Pro Bowl safety from the DFW area have stalled.

Here we go again. Jamal Adams-to-the-Cowboys rumors are going to be a thing for at least a while longer. And one of the franchise’s Ring of Honor icons is fanning the flames.

Back in the fall, the Dallas front office reportedly failed to swing a trade deal with the New York Jets for the services of the two-time Pro Bowl safety. The awkward courtship continued into the offseason, with the 2017 first-round draft pick making it no secret he would entertain a return to his hometown Metroplex to play for the Cowboys if the Jets were unwilling to meet his contract demands. Whispers of Adams being dangled as trade bait swirled throughout the league, right up through the 2020 NFL Draft, until the Jets made it known that they intended to pick up Adams’s fifth-year option.

But the long and drawn-out dance continues, as reported on Twitter by New York’s Daily News NFL columnist Gary Myers.

ESPN is confirming that contract talks between the Jets and Adams “have reached an impasse.”

According to the network’s Rich Cimini:

“Adams, eligible for a new contract now that he has completed his third season, said in January that he wants an extension by the start of the 2020 season. He is due to make $3.5 million this year. His salary jumps to $9.9 million in 2021, the amount of his fifth-year option.”

As Cimini points out, the Jets have Adams under team control for at least two years, with the option of using the franchise tag on him in 2022.

But if Adams is vocal enough about his unhappiness with the treatment from the organization, one of the more lucrative trade offers soon to be flooding the Jets’ phone lines may indeed persuade the club to sell.

The Cowboys, of course, could still be one of those teams asking about Adams’s price tag. Safety has been a weak spot on the Dallas roster for years, and despite the offseason signing of veteran HaHa Clinton-Dix, it remains an area of some concern for the team as it transitions to a new defense under coordinator Mike Nolan.

Some close to the team are reportedly already clamoring for Jerry and Stephen Jones to start sending out feelers to Gang Green regarding the cover man, who will turn 25 in October.

For now, the Adams soap opera in New York continues, as Adams presses for a new deal, and the Jets apparently remain hesitant to make a long-term commitment.

But the patriarchs in Dallas know a thing or two about soap operas, too. And luring an A-list superstar away to join their all-star cast is a plot twist that’s always within the realm of possibility.
