Patriots 2023 schedule leaks tracker: What we know so far

Here’s what we know so far about the Patriots’ 2023 schedule.

One of the most exciting days of the year is finally upon us with the NFL schedule slated to be released on Thursday at 8 p.m. ET.

For the New England Patriots, it means it’ll be an opportunity to see the actual roadmap for their 2023 season. The team has missed the playoffs in two of the last three seasons, and the hope is that they can finally get back on track with all of the changes they’ve made over the last several months.

One of the biggest changes was bringing Bill O’Brien back as offensive coordinator, along with offensive line coach Adrian Klemm. The team also made several key additions through free agency, including signing wideout JuJu Smith-Schuster, tight end Mike Gesicki and running back James Robinson.

That doesn’t even include the 12 rookies they selected at the 2023 NFL draft in late April. Only time will tell if it’s enough to actually win games on the football field.

Here’s what we know about the Patriots’ 2023 schedule so far:

The Chargers have taken former TCU wide receiver Quentin Johnston with the No. 21 overall selection in the 2023 NFL draft.

Johnston finished with 60 receptions for 1,069 yards and six touchdowns for the Horned Frogs this season en route to earning First-Team All Big-12. He averaged 8.9 yards after the catch in 2022 (10th in FBS), and his 18 forced missed tackles ranked eighth this season among receivers.

Johnston has great speed to win vertically and break away from defenders in the open field. His athleticism and agility allow him to gain separation on various routes. At 6-foot-3 and 208 pounds, Johnston uses his great size as a massive catch radius and to outmuscle cornerbacks.

Tracking Chiefs’ top-30 visits, private workouts

It’s the season for top-30 visits (and private workouts) and we’re keeping track of all those reported for the #Chiefs here:

It’s the season for pre-draft visits and private workouts for NFL teams.

From March 7 through April 19, NFL teams are permitted to host draft-eligible prospects at their facilities on what is called a top-30 visit. The name of the visit is a bit of a misnomer as many people think it refers to draft status. It simply refers to the 30 allotted pre-draft visits that teams are allowed each year.

Teams can use these 30 visits on whichever draft-eligible players they want. Some teams will use it on high-value targets who could be selected in the first round. Other teams prioritize players who might not be drafted at all. There are even teams who use these visits strategically to feign interest in the public eye.

What exactly goes on during top-30 visits, though? Prospects have an opportunity to meet with coaching staff members, front office executives and tour the team facilities. Some players who dealt with injuries during college will undergo a medical evaluation with team physicians and trainers. This was key for the Kansas City Chiefs eventually drafting a player like Trey Smith, who dealt with a blood-clotting issue in college.

Teams will often go over a player’s game film with them in order to try and get a better understanding of their football knowledge and how they study the game. From a general point of view, teams often want to just spend some time getting to know the person behind the player. It helps craft an idea of how they’d fit into the team culture and within their local community.

Private workouts are a separate distinction from top-30 visits. These are when scouts or coaches schedule an on-field workout with a player, usually at a player’s school or a pre-determined location. They’re allowed to put prospects through pro-day timing events or have them participate in various football exercises and drills, simulating what might take place in practice or on game day. These typically happen for Kansas City when the team misses out on a pro day or doesn’t have testing information on a player.

Really, both private workouts and top-30 visits are just another tool for NFL teams to gather more information on prospects. That information could help solidify a player’s place on the team’s draft board or it could see them removed from it altogether.

The Chiefs have already scheduled or completed several visits with a number of prospects. They haven’t had any reported private workouts yet, but if they do in the future, we’ll make note of it. Below you’ll find a list of the prospects who have been in or will travel to Kansas City for top-30 visits, which we’ll keep up to date leading up to the draft:

Tracking Packers’ official pre-draft visits ahead of 2023 NFL draft

Tracking all of the Green Bay Packers’ 30 pre-draft visits ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.

The Green Bay Packers can host 30 prospects for official pre-draft visits before the 2023 NFL draft.

The team can use the visits to take a closer look at a top prospect, build out the scouting report on a lesser-known player, or help recruiting efforts on a potential undrafted free agent.

In 2018, the Packers drafted or eventually acquired seven of the 30 players who visited. A year later, the Packers drafted or eventually acquired six. Pre-draft visits were virtual and uncapped in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, the Packers drafted six of their top 30 visitors, including top picks Devonte Wyatt and Christian Watson.

Here’s a tracker of the Packers’ reported pre-draft visits in 2023:

Tracking the New Orleans Saints’ Top 30 prospect visits ahead of 2023 NFL draft

Tracking the New Orleans Saints’ Top 30 prospect visits ahead of 2023 NFL draft: Which college players could soon be wearing black and gold?

And we’re off. The New Orleans Saints have begun scheduling visits with prospects eligible to be picked in the 2023 NFL draft at their team facility in Metairie. Because teams are limited to just 30 of these private meetings, they’re often referred to as the “Top 30” visits each spring. Teams can host 2023 draft prospects at their headquarters from March 7 to April 19, which isn’t as much time as you’d think when 32 different franchises are fighting for time with the same players.

These meetings don’t necessarily mean that the Saints are going to pick a player. Sometimes it’s a smokescreen to disguise interest, or an interview looking for insight to a future opponent. And not all 30 of the visits the Saints are scheduling will be reported; left guard Andrus Peat made the trip to New Orleans before the 2015 draft, but it went unreported in the media before the Saints picked him in the first round.

Eventually, every team will have met with nearly every prospect in the draft at some point. So take these news updates with a grain of salt. Still, it’s exciting to see new names linked to the black and gold:
