Quentin Johnston is making sure that his mom is set for life.

After the Chargers selected him in the 2023 NFL draft, Johnston told his mother, Sherry, that he didn’t want her working another day of her life.

“I just want to give a big shout-out to my mom,” Johnston said. “She’s going to be putting her two weeks’ notice in today. She can retire. I don’t want you working another day.”

That time has come, as this past Thursday marked Johnston’s mom’s last day at the VA Hospital in Temple, Texas.

Sherry had worked at the VA Hospital as a secretary for 24 years. Before that, she served in the U.S. Army. She now joins her husband and Quentin’s dad, Carl, in retirement.

“He was like, ‘Mama, I don’t want to hear it,'” Sherry said via ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry. “I was trying to explain to him why I felt like I should work, and he said, ‘Mama, you always talk about how God blesses us with stuff,’ and he said, ‘Bless me with this opportunity to retire you.'”

Johnston’s four-year rookie contract is worth $14.19 million and fully guaranteed. It also includes a signing bonus of $7.32 million.

“The money is cool, but I don’t plan on sitting there and blowing it,” Johnston said. “I’m going to have it in my savings account. I’m not really focused on the money, I’m focused on football.”

Last Saturday, May 20, the NFLPA held its Rookie Premiere in Los Angeles, CA. The event provided football fans with their first look at some of the 2023 NFL draft’s popular prospects in the uniforms of their new teams.

For the Chargers, their first-round pick wide receiver Quentin Johnston represented the team at the event.

A big-bodied wideout, Johnston should provide a spark to Los Angeles’ offense early in the 2023 season as he is a deep threat with the speed to stretch the field and can outpace defenders in the open field with great explosiveness, wiggle and strength.

Johnston needs to refine his route running and clean up some drop issues, but having the mentorship of Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Josh Palmer should aid that.

Quentin Johnston is sticking with No. 1.

After being taken with the No. 21 overall selection, the newest member of the Chargers, wide receiver Quentin Johnston arrived in Costa Mesa, CA, at the team’s headquarters on Friday.

Johnston spoke with the media and received his jersey, which will be the No. 1, the number we wore in college at TCU.

“I feel like that number comes with a lot. A lot is expected of you if you have that 1. You go on the field and look at a guy with number one, and you go, ‘he must be doing something.’

Johnston added that he was that number the second half of his high school career, and going into college, he donned the number after former TCU and current Vikings WR Jalen Reagor wore it.

The Chargers have taken former TCU wide receiver Quentin Johnston with the No. 21 overall selection in the 2023 NFL draft.

Johnston finished with 60 receptions for 1,069 yards and six touchdowns for the Horned Frogs this season en route to earning First-Team All Big-12. He averaged 8.9 yards after the catch in 2022 (10th in FBS), and his 18 forced missed tackles ranked eighth this season among receivers.

Johnston has great speed to win vertically and break away from defenders in the open field. His athleticism and agility allow him to gain separation on various routes. At 6-foot-3 and 208 pounds, Johnston uses his great size as a massive catch radius and to outmuscle cornerbacks.
