Tracking Packers’ official pre-draft visits ahead of 2023 NFL draft

Tracking all of the Green Bay Packers’ 30 pre-draft visits ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.

The Green Bay Packers can host 30 prospects for official pre-draft visits before the 2023 NFL draft.

The team can use the visits to take a closer look at a top prospect, build out the scouting report on a lesser-known player, or help recruiting efforts on a potential undrafted free agent.

In 2018, the Packers drafted or eventually acquired seven of the 30 players who visited. A year later, the Packers drafted or eventually acquired six. Pre-draft visits were virtual and uncapped in 2020 and 2021. In 2022, the Packers drafted six of their top 30 visitors, including top picks Devonte Wyatt and Christian Watson.

Here’s a tracker of the Packers’ reported pre-draft visits in 2023:

Packers host pre-draft visits for quartet of SEC offensive linemen

The Packers hosted pre-draft “Top 30” visits for four different offensive linemen from the SEC.

The Green Bay Packers hosted official pre-draft visits for a quartet of offensive linemen from the SEC. The team had Darrian Kinnard of Kentucky, Ed Ingram of LSU, Jean Delance of Florida and Jahmir Johnson of Texas A&M in Green Bay for “Top 30″ visits before the 2022 NFL draft, per Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Kinnard and Ingram could be Day 2 picks, while Delance and Johnson both have the potential to be priority free agents following the draft.

The Packers hosted visits with multiple offensive linemen, suggesting the team will use the 2022 NFL draft to help rebuild the depth up front on offense. Green Bay lost Billy Turner and Lucas Patrick this offseason, Dennis Kelly remains unsigned and Elgton Jenkins could miss a chunk of the season while recovering from an ACL injury.

Kinnard (6-5, 322) started 37 games at right tackle and two more at left tackle for Kentucky. He was a two-time All-SEC and two-time All-American. He has giant arms (35″) and hands (11 1/4″) but tested poorly during the pre-draft process (3.28 Relative Athletic Score), especially in the agility drills, making him an unlikely fit for the Packers. A move to guard is likely.

Ingram (6-3, 307) started 23 games at left guard and 13 at right guard for LSU. He lacks Kinnard’s size but tested better athletically (7.29 RAS), and his movement skills are more befitting of Green Bay’s usual offensive line tendencies. His pass protection ability is a plus. An arrest in 2018 resulting in a year-long suspension might have been the team’s motivating reason for the pre-draft visit.

Both Kinnard and Ingram could come off the board in second or third round.

Johnson is ranked as Dane Brugler’s No. 33 overall offensive tackle in the class. Delance is No. 39. Both got free agent grades from Brugler. Often during the pre-draft process, teams use visits for players down the draft board for recruiting purposes.

Johnson, who weighed in at only 290 pounds, started 11 games in 2021, including starts at left tackle. Delance, a transfer from Texas, started 37 total games over his final three seasons and was a participant at the East-West Shrine Game.

Neither tested particularly well, but Delance has 36.5” arms, creating an intriguing trait for his transition to the NFL. Having the pair come to Green Bay may increase the team’s chances of signing them if they go undrafted.

The Packers have also met with Washington State’s Abraham Lucas, Tulsa’s Tyler Smith, Penn State’s Rasheed Walker, Utah’s Bam Olaseni, Central Michigan’s Luke Goedeke and Wisconsin’s Logan Bruss.

Top WR prospects Jameson Williams and Treylon Burks among Saints pre-draft visits

The Saints, in prime position to add premier receiver talent, hosted top prospects including Jameson Williams, Treylon Burks, and Sky Moore, via @RossJacksonNOLA:

The incoming rookie wide receiver class is a remarkably deep one again in this year’s NFL draft. Atop that class, many have argued the status of “WR1” with Alabama’s Jameson Williams and Arkansas’ Treylon Burks often winning the crown. The New Orleans Saints have a glaring need at wideout, and many believe either one of these explosive prospects could help to solve it. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reports that both Williams and Burks made official pre-draft visits with the Saints recently, as did top-50 prospect Skyy Moore, a receiver out of Western Michigan.

So the Saints are also high on this year’s draft class. Williams fits the mold of a speedy deep-threat that can be an unstoppable threat with the ball in his hands after the catch. Moore is known as more of a shifty run-after-catch threat who does his best work down the sidelines. Burks fits a similar vision but more in line with the Saints’ preferred prototype at the position. But each of these playmakers have their concerns throughout the draft community.

Williams suffered a major injury with an ACL tear last in the season during the national title game in January. But before that injury, he was making a massive impact early. His injury took place with 12:36 left in the second quarter and Williams was already up to 4 catches for 65 yards, including a 40-yard downfield shot. Until the injury, there was no slowing him down. He could bring that same level of field-stretching prowess with him to the NFL, an area the Saints and big-armed quarterback Jameis Winston would love to improve.

Burks has been getting a lot of question marks surrounding his draft stock thanks to a 4.55-second 40-yard dash time at the NFL scouting combine. But looking at his tape, there’s little to be concerned about when it comes to his ability to run away from defenders. Against SEC defenses he continuously won 50/50 balls and blew past defensive backs. But with his 6-foot-3 and 225 pound frame, he can run through them with the ball in his hands as well.

And Moore is undersized at 5-foot-10 and 195 pounds, though he boasts 4.41-second speed in the 40-yard dash. He’s highly elusive with the ball in his hands and is nearly impossible to beat off the line, but he doesn’t have a very diverse route tree. He needs more development on intermediary and deep routes further downfield.

Any of these receivers would have an immediate impact on the Saints offense. Williams totaled 79 receptions for a whopping 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns catches on his way to being a Biletnikoff Award finalist. Burks put up some impressive production as well with 66 receptions, 1,104 yards, and 11 touchdown catches. Moore totaled 94 receptions for 1,291 yards with 10 touchdown catches last season. Now that the Saints can pick at both Nos. 16 and 19 in the first round of this year’s draft, with another selection at No. 49, they’re in prime position to add premier talent at a position of need.

NFL teams canceling pre-draft visits, workouts because of COVID-19 outbreak

The Kansas City Chiefs could be among the NFL teams canceling pre-draft visits and workouts with players.

Over the course of the final weeks leading up to the 2020 NFL draft, the Kansas City Chiefs would typically bring in an allotted 30 prospects to their facility. These visits are essential for fact-gathering on players the team didn’t scout during the 2019 season, players with medical issues and players with off-field troubles. In general, it’s just a way to get a better understanding if a player would fit the team culture.

In addition to altering travel plans for coaches and scouts due to the coronavirus outbreak, it appears top-30 visits and pre-draft workouts are being canceled by teams around the NFL. Erik Burkhardt, an agent from Select Sports Group, says that he’s been notified visits to NFL team facilities are being canceled. He noted that many draft-eligible players had scheduled multiple visits and workouts with teams.

Despite Burkhardt’s claim, the NFL has yet to mandate cancelation pre-draft visits. Instead, it is leaving that decision to the discretion of individual teams according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

In 2019, the Chiefs drafted two players they brought in for top-30 visits. They also added a third player from their visits in undrafted free agency. These are crucial tools that the team used to add to their eventual Super Bowl-winning roster.

We don’t know if the Chiefs are among the teams canceling their pre-draft visits yet. It’d stand to reason, given their response to pro day attendance, that they’d err on the side of caution here too.
