College football’s top performers in the Big 12 during Week 5

Plenty of notable performers in the Big 12 during Week 5.

Week 5 in the Big 12 featured a pair of unbeaten going head-to-head in Austin, Texas. The Texas Longhorns hosted the Kansas Jayhawks, but it was far from a competitive game late in this one as the Horns took down KU 40-14. Jonathon Brooks was hard to stop on the ground with over 200 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Oklahoma also hosted the Iowa State Cyclones. ISU was coming off a win over Oklahoma State and was close against the Sooners early on. Much like the Texas game, OU ran away in the second half of the game.

The Baylor game was the most shocking of the weekend as the Bears were down 35-7 before a fourth-quarter explosion gave them the win. The Houston Cougars found themselves in a precarious position as they lost to Texas Tech 49-28. Dana Holgorsen’s seat is starting to heat up.

In a look back at the week that was, College Sports Wire checks in on the top performers of Week 5 in the Big 12:

5 standouts from first week of Chiefs training camp

These five players have made their case to either make the #Chiefs’ 53-man roster or elevate their position on Kansas City’s depth chart.

Training camp is a time for lesser-known prospects to make their case for an NFL roster spot, and many of the Kansas City Chiefs’ players have looked hungry to make the cut through five days of practice in St. Joseph.

On both sides of the ball, rookies and veterans alike are participating in drills with enthusiasm through sweltering workouts at Missouri Western State University. Several unheralded up-and-comers have warranted a look either on the Chiefs’ 53-man roster or higher than they currently sit on the team’s depth chart.

Ravens top defensive performers in 2022, according to PFF

These 10 Ravens were Baltimore’s top defensive performers in 2022 according to Pro Football Focus

Though the Baltimore Ravens’ 2022 campaign was cut short after their loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Wild Card round, the team’s future is bright. Improvement will be necessary for the team to compete for a Super Bowl next season, but given the exceptional play of their bend-don’t-break defensive unit in 2022, they seem primed for something special.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson is their best threat on offense, but his outstanding abilities wouldn’t count for much if the Ravens’ defense didn’t hold up their end of the bargain. These top-10 defensive performers led the way for the team’s success on that end, according to Pro Football Focus.

Chargers’ top defensive performers in 2022, per PFF

These 10 Chargers defenders were the team’s top performers, according to Pro Football Focus.

The Los Angeles Chargers are heading into next season with some serious work to do on both sides of the ball to secure their first playoff win in what feels like an eternity. The prospect of a playoff win, let alone a Super Bowl run, seems unattainable, even though the team has made great strides with quarterback Justin Herbert under center.

On defense, the Chargers made a name for themselves this season as a gritty squad that could get after the quarterback and force turnovers with regularity. If they intend to improve noticeably in 2023, though, they’ll need every available player to step their game up and play with the same intensity as these 10 top performers as graded by Pro Football Focus:

Hendon Hooker, Jalin Hyatt lead this week’s top performers list

Vols duo lead the way in Week 11’s top performers in the SEC.

In Week 11 we learned who will play in the SEC Championship game with the LSU Tigers clinching the West division. They defeated Arkansas 13-10 and got a little help from Alabama, who knocked off Ole Miss 30-24. The Tigers will face off with the Georgia Bulldogs. UGA defeated Mississippi State 45-19.

The biggest blowouts came from Florida in their 38-6 win over South Carolina, while Tennessee dropped 66 points on Missouri. The biggest surprise of the week game in the Kentucky-Vanderbilt matchup in Lexington. For the first time in over three years, the Commodores earned a conference victory.

Auburn gave interim head coach Cadillac Williams his first victory in a 13-10 victory over Texas A&M. The Aggies reached a new low as they became the first team in over a decade to begin the year as a top 10 team and finish with a losing record.

Mason Taylor among the top SEC performers in Week 10

Three LSU Tigers are among the College Wire’s top performers of Week 10 in the SEC.

Week 10 in the SEC certainly didn’t disappoint with a pair of heavyweight fights that had huge implications. The Georgia Bulldogs took care of the Tennessee Vols, 27-13. The hometown LSU Tigers were able to outlast Alabama 32-31 in overtime. LSU and Georgia are on a collision course for the SEC Championship game in December.

The blowout of the week honor belongs to the Florida Gators for their 41-24 victory over Texas A&M. Billy Napier’s team outscored the Aggies 21-0 in the second half after trailing 24-20 at halftime. The lone nonconference matchup featured Liberty and Arkansas, the Hogs fell 21-19 after they were unable to tie the game with a two-point conversion attempt.

New Auburn interim head coach Carnell “Cadillac” Williams trailed 24-6 at halftime before the Tigers came roaring back against Mississippi State. The Bulldogs were too much to overcome with their 39-33 victory. Kentucky and South Carolina each pulled off victories in their matchups.

In the early window, we saw the final game of the Bryan Harsin era as the Auburn Tigers fell to the Arkansas Razorbacks 41-27. That snapped a six-game skid in the series for the Hogs. On Monday, Harsin was fired after just 21 games on the Plains.

After a huge win for South Carolina in Week 8, they fell to unranked Missouri at home, 23-10. The blowout of the week featured the Tennessee Vols rolling past Kentucky, 44-6. In the night game, we saw Ole Miss hold off the Texas A&M Aggies in College Station, 31-28.

This week we will see all 14 SEC teams in action. The biggest showdowns will feature the Vols coming to Athens to face the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs and the Alabama Crimson Tide heading to Death Valley to face off with LSU. Both games could determine the SEC Championship matchup.

Michigan backfield duo dominate in Big Ten’s Week 7 top performances

Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards lead this week’s top performers.

In Week 7, 10 of the 14 Big Ten teams were in action. No Friday night lights this time as all five games took place on Saturday. It all began with Illinois improving to 6-1 on the season to remain in a tie for first in the Big Ten West with Purdue, who outlasted Nebraska.

Each game was relatively close with the exception of Michigan-Penn State. The game was close at the half but the Wolverines ran away with this victory thanks to the performances of the offensive line, the running backs, and a stifling defense.
