Top five teams hold steady in Amway Coaches Poll

Not much change at the top of the polls this week.

College football’s penultimate week offered little drama at the top of the polls.

LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, Georgia and Alabama remain the top five teams in this week’s Amway Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY.

Of the top five teams Ohio State and Georgia were the only ones to have some drama, with the Buckeyes beating former No. 9 Penn State by 11 and Georgia squeezing by then-No. 24 Texas A&M. As is tradition in the SEC, many top teams took the week off with FCS opponents and Clemson had a bye.

Oregon was the big dropper this week, falling from No. 6 to No. 13 after a loss at unranked Arizona State.

In the Big Ten, Ohio State is trailed by No. 9 Minnesota, No. 11 Michigan, No. 12 Penn State, No. 14 Wisconsin and No. 20 Iowa.

Boston College vs. Notre Dame

When: Saturday, November 23

Time: 2:30 p.m. ET

TV: NBC

Live Stream: fuboTV (watch for free)

Amazingly, it’s been seven straight weeks that a team has had a bye before playing Notre Dame. Boston College is no different. Sitting at 5-5 with two games left, the Eagles need one more win to become bowl eligible. Running back AJ Dillon, who has the third-most rushing yards this season with 1,451, has been remarkable. BC was unable to come away with a win against Florida State on Nov. 23, losing 38-31 at home, but Dillon ran for 165 yards. Quarterback Dennis Grosel went 20-for-29 with 227 yards passing and two touchdowns.

Notre Dame (8-2) easily handled Navy last weekend in a 52-20 win. The Fighting Irish were led by quarterback Ian Book, who went 14-for-20 with 284 yards and five touchdowns. Four of those were caught by wide receiver Chase Claypool, who had 117 yards on just seven receptions. While Irish defensive tackle Jayson Ademiola is expected to play after a sprained ankle, Shayne Simon is officially done for the year after suffering what appears to be a torn patella tendon.

7:11 ET —
What did Oklahoma do to tick off the committee I do have to ask.  The Sooners got a huge win, coming from behind to beat a previously unbeaten Baylor team, a win more impressive than any that is on the resume of Utah, Oregon, Penn State, Alabama, Georgia, Clemson or Ohio State.  Yet the loss at K-State is what is keeping them down?  Man alive, no love for the Big XII this year and I can’t say I agree with it.

7:14 ET –
Alabama stays at No. 5 and they deserve to.  I hate the idea this week that has been tossed around that if Tua is out that they’re not worthy of being a playoff team.  You can argue they don’t deserve a chance and I would, because they lost a home game to LSU and the Tigers should have to potentially beat Alabama another time to win it all.  But if they were number five a week ago and they won easily, they don’t deserve to fall, even if their star quarterback is out.  Those arguing the contrary, tell me how that worked out for Ohio State back in 2014.

WolverinesWire Top 25: Week Thirteen

Contributor Matthew Lounsberry updated his Top 25 rankings after the results from Week 12.

[jwplayer cTE7nfAE-XNcErKyb]

1.) LSU

The Tigers got more of a test than they would have liked at Ole Miss on Saturday, but quarterback Joe Burrow threw five more touchdown passes to bring his season total up to 38, and LSU left Oxford with a 58-37 victory. The Tigers defense is becoming a bit of a concern, especially after allowing 614 total yards including an incredible 402 on the ground. LSU’s defense is currently ranked 53rd in the nation. They’ve been content to outscore opponents all season, but should that offense run into adversity, the Tigers’ defense could be their undoing. LSU hosts lowly Arkansas next.

2.) Ohio State

After a 56-21 win over Rutgers to improve to 10-0, there’s not much to say about the Buckeyes. Quarterback Justin Fields has thrown for 31 touchdown passes, and rushed for another ten, all while throwing just a single interception this season. Up next, Ohio State hosts Penn State with a chance to clinch the Big Ten East division.

3.) Clemson

Clemson has found its groove, and the Tigers put on another whooping against an overmatched ACC foe. Clemson was utterly dominant against the second best team in their division, Wake Forest, barely breaking a sweat in a 52-3 rout. The Tigers will have a bye before traveling to South Carolina for their season-finale against the rival Gamecocks.

4.) Georgia

The Bulldogs strengthened their position within the Top 4 this past Saturday, earning their third win of the season over a ranked team. Georgia went up 21-0 at Jordan-Hare Stadium before holding on to a 21-14 win over Auburn. Up next, the Bulldogs will host a Texas A&M squad that’s coming in on a four-game win streak.

5.) Minnesota

Leaving the Golden Gophers within the Top 5 will raise eyebrows after their 23-19 loss in Iowa City this past Saturday, but Minnesota still has the best win out of any one-loss contender ranked 5 through 11. LSU is the only other program that has a win over a Top 10 program, and while Saturday’s loss shouldn’t be overlooked, it’s not hard to understand the letdown either. The Golden Gophers were coming off perhaps the biggest win in school history, and had to take a road trip to arguably the scariest stadium in the Big Ten, (more on that later). Minnesota should be able to get right this coming Saturday, traveling to Northwestern.

6.) Penn State

The Nittany Lions were in a real fight with Indiana on Saturday, but they prevailed by a score of 34-27. It was a nice bounce-back game for Penn State after their disappointing loss at Minnesota the week prior. The contest also showed that the 7-win Hoosiers should not be taken lightly. The Nittany Lions still have their goals in front of them, and they control their own destiny as they head to Columbus this Saturday to face the Buckeyes.

7.) Oklahoma

A comeback for the ages – the Sooners trailed 28-3 on the road at Baylor, and 31-10 at halftime. But the much-maligned Oklahoma defense held the Bears scoreless in the second half, and quarterback Jalen Hurts overcame three turnovers to lead the Sooners back for a 34-31 victory. It was the largest comeback in Oklahoma history. The Sooners are not the well-oiled machine they appeared to be earlier this season, but they are still very much alive for a playoff berth as they host TCU this coming Saturday.

8.) Alabama

Devastating news out of Tuscaloosa this weekend as quarterback Tua Tagovialoa was lost for the season after suffering a serious hip injury in the second quarter of a 38-7 win over Mississippi State. Tagovialoa is expected to make a full recovery, but his days wearing a Crimson Tide jersey are likely over. In a season in which the Tide has suffered several injuries, this may be the one that broke the elephant’s back. It’s unclear how the playoff committee with handle Tagovailoa’s injury, but one would assume that any chance of Alabama winning a national title went up in smoke when its quarterback went down. The Crimson Tide host Western Carolina in a glorified scrimmage this Saturday.

9.) Utah

I’ve contemplated it for a couple weeks, and it’s finally time. I’ve moved Utah ahead of fellow Pac-12 member Oregon this week after the Utes’ 49-3 win over UCLA on Saturday. With both programs carrying a loss, the fact that the Ducks had fallen to a superior opponent held them ahead of Utah up to this point, but it’s becoming too hard to ignore what the Utes are doing in conference play. Utah has outscored Pac-12 opponents 251-84 this season. The Utes have scored more points than Oregon in conference play, and surrendered fewer points than the Ducks in conference play. If this move is a head-scratcher for you, go look at the results against common opponents between the two teams. Utah travels to Arizona this Saturday.

10.) Oregon

The Ducks are still in contention for a playoff spot, and they’ll get their shot at Utah in the Pac-12 championship game. Oregon continued its roll on Saturday with a 34-6 win over Arizona, stretching its winning streak to nine consecutive games. The Ducks’ season-opening loss to Auburn continues to haunt them however, after the Tigers lost their third game of the season this past week. Oregon should have won that opener, there’s no two ways about it. The Ducks travel to Arizona State this Saturday.

11.) Baylor

A gut-wrenching loss for Baylor on a night when it appeared they were ready to prove the doubters wrong. The Bears stormed out of the gate and raced to a 25-point lead, but the offense went cold in the second half. Baylor could only sit and watch as Jalen Hurts led Oklahoma all the way back, handing the Bears their first loss of the season. It’s a defeat that will be difficult to overcome, but one that Baylor needs to move past quickly. The Bears play host to rival Texas this Saturday.

12.) Florida

Florida remains the top two-loss team in my rankings, but their best win took a hit when Auburn fell for the third time this season. But that win, combined with the fact that their two losses came against teams I have ranked in my Top 4 (LSU, Georgia) keeps them ahead of the teams ranked 13 through 15 on my list. The Gators took care of business this past Saturday with a 23-6 win over Missouri, and now enter a bye week ahead of their season-finale against rival Florida State.

13.) Wisconsin

The Badgers are nipping on the Gators heels. Wisconsin has wins over Michigan and Iowa, but a blowout loss to Ohio State and an upset loss to Illinois keep them here for now. On Saturday, the Badgers had a bit of a slow start against Nebraska, before pulling away for a 37-21 victory. In the midst of that game, tailback Jonathan Taylor passed Herschall Walker for the most career rushing yards through three years of college ball. Taylor now has 5,634 career rushing yards. Up next, Wisconsin will host Purdue.

14.) Michigan

The Wolverines reclaimed the state of Michigan in emphatic fashion with a 44-10 beatdown of the rival Spartans. It was a satisfying win, but not one that will create ripples throughout college football, due to Michigan State’s lack of competitiveness these last several weeks. The Wolverines have opportunities in front of them to make bigger statements, and that starts this week with a road trip to a surprisingly solid Indiana squad. The Hoosiers gave Penn State a real fight in Happy Valley last Saturday, and while Indiana hasn’t beaten Michigan since 1987, Memorial Stadium in Bloomington has been a scary place for the Wolverines during the last few visits.

15.) Notre Dame

The Fighting Irish were embarrassed by their rivals to the north in Ann Arbor a few weeks ago, and then played uninspired in a 1-point win over Virginia Tech the following week. However, Notre Dame looks to be back to playing really good football after back-to-back blowout wins. Beating Duke 38-7 is nothing to write home about, but crushing a one-loss, Top 25 team like Navy is a different story. The Fighting Irish wasted no time, building a 28-0 first quarter lead and never let Navy back in it, winning 55-20. Up next, Notre Dame will host another rival in Boston College.

16.) Auburn

The Tigers looked overmatched for much of the game against Georgia on Saturday, but there’s a lot of fight in this Auburn squad. Trailing 21-0 in the fourth, the Tigers got back to within seven points and had the ball with a chance to tie. Unfortunately, a poorly-thrown pass on 4th-and-2 by quarterback Bo Nix ended Auburn’s comeback chances, and the Tigers fell by a score of 21-14. Auburn’s three losses have each come from teams ranked in the playoff committee’s Top 11. The Tigers host Samford in the SEC’s traditional “pre-rivalry cupcake week” this Saturday.

17.) Memphis

The playoff committee has Cincinnati as the top Group of Five team in the country right now, and frankly I don’t get it. Memphis looks like the best team out of the Group of Five to me, and they kept things rolling this past weekend with a 45-27 win over Houston. The Tigers only loss was by a 2-point margin to better-than-you-think Temple. Memphis travels to South Florida this weekend, and then will have a chance to prove my theory right when they host Cincinnati the following week.

18.) SMU

The Mustangs fell out of the committee’s rankings last week, but they hold steady within my Top 20. SMU enjoyed a bye this past Saturday, but will return to action with a trip to the Naval Academy. The Midshipmen are licking their wounds after a humiliating 55-20 loss at the hands of Notre Dame last weekend, but are still very much alive for an American conference championship. The matchup between SMU and Navy is a de facto elimination game for the AAC’s West division.

19.) Boise State

The Broncos remain in contention for a New Year Six bowl after their 42-9 win over New Mexico this past Saturday. Boise State is unbeaten in Mountain West Conference play, and can clinch the league’s Mountain division with a win over Utah State this coming weekend.

20.) Cincinnati

The Bearcats survived another scare this past weekend, eking out a 20-17 win over South Florida with a last-second field goal. This comes two weeks after Cincinnati won by only a field goal against East Carolina (46-43). The Bearcats’ only loss came in blowout fashion via Ohio State, which is certainly forgivable, but this team will need to play better in its last two weeks if it wants to claim the Group of Five’s slot in the New Year’s Six. Cincinnati will host Temple this weekend before traveling to Memphis to finish the regular season.

21.) Iowa

Top 10 programs beware! Kinnick Stadium in late Fall is your biggest nightmare. Since 2008, Iowa has defeated five unbeaten Top 10 programs at home on October 30th or later – No. 3 Penn State (2008, 24-23), No. 5 Michigan State (2010, 37-6), No. 2 Michigan (2016, 14-13), No. 3 Ohio State (2017, 55-24) and No. 8 Minnesota this past weekend, 23-19. This was easily the biggest win of the year for the Hawkeyes, and had to be a satisfying one after losing tough games to Michigan (10-3), Penn State (17-12) and Wisconsin (24-22). Iowa has already been eliminated from contention in the Big Ten West, but has an excellent chance to finish the regular season with nine wins with upcoming games against Illinois and Nebraska.

22.) Oklahoma State

The Cowboys had little trouble dispatching Kansas on Saturday, going up big early and cruising to a 31-12 finish. Oklahoma State needs a ton of help to reach the Big 12 title game, but should reach eight wins this weekend with a road trip to West Virginia. After that, the Cowboys will have a chance to sweeten their 2019 season regardless of Big 12 standings when they face Oklahoma in the Bedlam game to end the year.

23.) Appalachian State

Why are the Mountaineers here? Because they’ve beaten a team from the ACC and a team from the SEC, and have only slipped up in conference play once. Were the two teams they beat from those two conferences very good? No. But, it’s a good story and they deserve credit for their 9-1 record through 12 weeks, and for humiliating two teams from the Power 5. Up next, Appalachian State hosts a pretty bad Texas State team.

24.) Air Force

There weren’t too many good options down here, so why not give a nod to one of the service academies? I had Navy ranked for the last couple weeks, but after they got blown out by Notre Dame, it’s time to recognize Air Force for their 8-2 start to the season. I’m breaking one of my season-long rules by having the Falcons ahead of the Midshipmen despite the fact that Navy won the head-to-head matchup between these two squads, but Air Force has a very good chance to end the season with 10 wins. Should Navy beat SMU this coming week, they’ll jump back ahead of the Falcons.

25.) Texas A&M

I’ve held off on re-ranking Texas A&M for several weeks now, because despite the fact the Aggies are now 7-3, those seven wins have come against seven teams with losing records, including an FCS program. The three times Texas A&M played a team with a winning record, they lost, and all three of those losses were by more than a touchdown. The Aggies are ranked here because the options were extremely limited, but they’ll have their chance to remain in my rankings as they close out the season with road trips to Georgia and LSU.

Few major changes in this week’s Amway Coaches Poll

It was an eventful week in college football, just not at the top of the polls.

[jwplayer 2KXMSFL4-PROpJzTY]

It was certainly a newsworthy week of college football, but there just weren’t many big-time losses.

As a result, this week’s Amway Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY, remains mostly unchanged at the top. Minnesota and Baylor fell out of the top ten after each suffered their first losses of the season.

Alabama and Georgia swapped spots with the Crimson Tide dropping from four to five and the Bulldogs taking their place. That, I’d guess, is mostly due to Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa suffering a dislocated hip against Mississippi State, knocking him out for the season.

LSU, Ohio State and Clemson are the top three teams in the poll, in that order.

In the Big Ten, Penn State rose two spots from No. 11 to No. 9. Minnesota fell from No. 7 to No. 11. Michigan (No. 12), Wisconsin (No. 14), and Iowa (No. 20) round out the conference’s ranked teams.

WolverinesWire Top 25: Week Twelve

Contributor Matthew Lounsberry shares his latest Top 25 after several big games during Week 11 of the 2019 college football season.

[jwplayer wzzdpFiU-XNcErKyb]

1.) LSU

After a 46-41 win in Tuscaloosa over Alabama, no other resume in the country comes close to the one LSU has compiled through eleven weeks. In addition to the win this past Saturday, the Tigers have Top 25 wins over Florida, Auburn and Texas. LSU has earned the top spot, and no other team will catch them unless the Tigers drop one of their final three games. Up next for LSU is a road trip to Ole Miss.

2.) Ohio State

The Buckeyes played angry on Saturday – whether that has anything to do with the absence of stud defensive end Chase Young is up for debate – and showed no mercy in a 73-14 win over Maryland on Saturday. Ohio State has wins over Wisconsin, Cincinnati and a 7-2 Indiana club, and has looked like the most dominant and complete team in the country. Ohio State and LSU may be on a collision course for the national title.

3.) Clemson

The Tigers don’t have much of a resume. Clemson’s best win is a Week 2 victory over a 6-3 Texas A&M team, and the Tigers haven’t been tested at all in the ACC. The one conference matchup that appeared to have potential took a hit after Wake Forest was beaten soundly by Virginia Tech this past weekend. Clemson will host the Demon Deacons this Saturday, but the Tigers have already clinched the ACC’s Atlantic division. Despite the lack of marquee wins, Clemson has been dominant, winning their games by an average of 33.8 points per game this season.

4.) Georgia

The Bulldogs are 8-1 after a 27-0 shutout of Missouri on Saturday. Georgia’s ugly overtime loss to South Carolina got a little uglier after the Gamecocks lost to Appalachian State this past Saturday, but the Bulldogs have Top 25 wins over Florida and Notre Dame. No other one-loss team has two Top 25 wins, so Georgia gets the No. 4 spot for now. The Bulldogs have a chance to add another resume-building win when they travel to Auburn this upcoming Saturday.

5.) Minnesota

Welcome to national validation Minnesota. The Golden Gophers got their shot to show the country they were for real, and they took advantage with a 31-26 win over Penn State – just four days after the playoff committee voted the Nittany Lions the No. 4 team in the country. Minnesota is undefeated and now has a Top 10 win on its resume. The Golden Gophers can further cement there place in the Top 10 with remaining games against Iowa and Wisconsin. That starts this weekend when Minnesota travels to Kinnick Stadium to take on the Hawkeyes.

6.) Penn State

No. 6 might seem high for a team coming off a loss the previous week, but Penn State still has a solid resume despite the loss to the Gophers. The Nittany Lions have wins over Iowa, Michigan and a nonconference victory over a 6-3 Pittsburgh team. If No. 6 is too high, we’ll find out soon enough after Penn State faces Indiana (7-2) and No. 2 Ohio State (9-0) over the next two weeks.

7.) Alabama

The Crimson Tide needed a win on Saturday more than LSU did. Alabama was at home, and after falling to the Tigers the Tide are still lacking a marquee win. Like Clemson, Alabama’s best win is over Texas A&M (6-3), but the Crimson Tide no longer has the benefit of being undefeated to back up their claim as one of the top four teams in the country. The playoff committee will likely disagree, but I can’t give Alabama a pass with the schedule they’ve played this season. If the best thing on your resume is a home loss to No. 1, that’s not much of a resume.

8.) Oregon

The Pac-12 conference isn’t doing Oregon any favors. The Ducks’ best win is over mediocre Washington (6-4), but Oregon has reeled off eight straight wins since their season-opening loss to Auburn. Oregon led Auburn 21-6 in that game, but after allowing 21 unanswered points to the Tigers, the Ducks weren’t able to capitalize on that opportunity for a signature victory. The Ducks need a marquee win, but with three games remaining against opponents hovering around the .500 mark, Oregon will likely have to wait until a potential Pac-12 championship showdown with Utah. First, the Ducks will host Arizona this Saturday.

9.) Oklahoma

The Sooners are trending in the wrong direction. Oklahoma had a bye week following their shocking 48-41 loss to Kansas State, but the Sooners didn’t seem to find many answers during their time off. This past Saturday, Oklahoma led Iowa State 35-14 at halftime, but needed an interception on a two-point conversion attempt to avoid back-to-back upset losses. The Sooners survived with a 42-41 victory. Oklahoma’s win over Texas (6-3) is their only notable victory, and their last two outings have done nothing to suggest this team belongs in the playoff. The Sooners can begin turning that narrative around this Saturday when they travel to undefeated Baylor. And speaking of those Bears…

10.) Baylor

Baylor continues to find ways to win. On Saturday, the Bears survived their second trip to overtime this season, outlasting TCU by a final score of 29-23. Baylor isn’t winning impressively – their margin of victory in conference play is only 8.5 ppg – but a 9-0 mark earns them a spot in my Top 10. The Bears also have victories over a pair of 6-3 teams in Oklahoma State and Kansas State. Baylor will get its shot to enter the playoff discussion with upcoming games against Oklahoma and Texas these next two weeks.

11.) Utah

Like Oregon, Utah’s best win came against Washington. The Utes also have a nonconference victory over rival BYU (5-4). The difference between Oregon and Utah, however, is that the Ducks lost their season-opener against a Top 15 team. The Utes fell on the road to USC, while Oregon blew out the Trojans. However, against other common opponents (Cal, Washington, Washington State) Utah has a much higher margin of victory than the Ducks – 21.7 ppg as opposed to 5.3 ppg. Utah and Oregon are on a collision course towards the Pac-12 championship, and as long as neither team trips up in their final three games prior to the title, the winner of the Pac-12 could have a shot at the playoff.

12.) Florida

Florida took care of business on Saturday, blowing out SEC cellar-dweller Vanderbilt by a final score of 56-0. However, Minnesota and Baylor jumped the Gators after both remained undefeated this past weekend. Florida is still my highest-ranked two-loss team in the country. The Gators travel to Missouri this Saturday, before wrapping up their season with in-state rival Florida State.

13.) Auburn

Unlike Florida, Auburn still has opportunities ahead to move up the rankings. The Tigers are coming off a bye and will host Georgia this coming Saturday. Then, after a glorified exhibition against FCS foe Samford, the Tigers will finish their season by hosting Alabama. Winning either of those contests might be enough to move Auburn back into the Top 10.

14.) Wisconsin

It’s hard to call it a bounce back game after the Badgers were drilled by Ohio State two weeks ago, but Wisconsin got a much-needed win over rival Iowa on Saturday, 24-22. Stud tailback Jonathan Taylor returned to form with 250 rushing yards on 31 carries, and the Badgers’ defense stopped the Hawkeyes two-point conversion attempt to hold on for the victory. With that result, Wisconsin is still in the running for a Big Ten West division title. The Badgers must win out against Nebraska, Purdue and Minnesota – and will need the Golden Gophers to lose another game – in order to claim the division.

15.) Michigan

Michigan was idle ahead of this coming weekend’s game against rival Michigan State, and got to sit back and enjoy watching the Spartans blow a 28-3 lead against Illinois. The Wolverines have won each of their last two games – Notre Dame and Maryland – by 31 points. The Spartans have lost four in a row. But Michigan State always seems to bring their best effort in this game, and has beaten the Jim Harbaugh-led Wolverines twice in the Big House. Michigan is currently a 14.5-point favorite, but hasn’t beaten MSU by more than 14 points since 2006.

16.) Memphis

The Tigers enjoyed a bye this week after their big win over SMU back on Nov. 2. Memphis controls its own destiny in the American Athletic Conference’s West division, and should cruise through the next two weeks against Houston and South Florida. The Tigers’ season-finale will be a massive game however, as Memphis welcomes AAC East division leader Cincinnati.

17.) Notre Dame

The Fighting Irish got right on Saturday with a blowout win over Duke, 38-7. Quarterback Ian Book had a massive game for Notre Dame, completing 18-of-32 pass attempts for 181 yards and four touchdowns. Book also ran for 139 yards on 12 rushing attempts. The Irish now turn their attention to a Top 25 matchup with rival Navy this coming Saturday. Notre Dame is currently a 10-point favorite in that contest.

18.) SMU

In back-to-back weeks, East Carolina (3-7) has put serious scares into contenders for the AAC title. Two weeks ago, the Pirates took Cincinnati to the brink before falling by a score of 46-43. This past Saturday, it was SMU who had to trade punches with East Carolina, but the Mustangs eventually prevailed, 59-51. SMU is still very much in contention for the AAC title, but needs Memphis to lose one of their final three games in order to win the West division of the conference. However, before the Mustangs can think about a potential conference title, they’ll need to solve their defensive woes during their bye this week. SMU will return on Nov. 23 with a trip to Navy.

19.) Cincinnati

Cincinnati cruised to a 48-3 victory over Connecticut on Saturday, and remains in full control of the AAC’s East division. The Bearcats are one of about five Group of Five programs vying for a New Year’s Six bowl game, and might be in the best position amongst that group with their only loss coming at the hands of mighty Ohio State. Cincinnati will travel to South Florida this Saturday.

20.) Boise State

Another Group of Five team with hopes of reaching a New Year’s Six bowl is Boise State, though the Broncos made need some help to get there. After falling to BYU back on Oct. 19, Boise State finds themselves looking up at some of the contenders out of the AAC. Boise State hasn’t done itself any favors with close wins over San Jose State and Wyoming over the last two weeks. The Broncos need to win their last three games, and the Mountain West championship game, convincingly in order to get back in the race for the New Year’s Six. That starts this weekend when Boise State hosts New Mexico.

21.) Navy

The Midshipmen have quietly moved themselves into position to compete for a New Year’ Six bowl. After their loss to Memphis back on Sept. 26, Navy has reeled off five straight wins and is tied for the lead in the AAC’s West division. The Midshipmen still have to play SMU, and will need Memphis to drop a game down the stretch, but Navy is very much alive for a conference title. Before any of that gets resolved however, the Midshipmen have an opportunity to add a win to their resume that would be better than any other Group of Five program, as Navy travels to Notre Dame this weekend.

22.) Texas

The Longhorns make their way back into my rankings as my top three-loss team in the country. Two of Texas’ three losses have come against Top 10 teams (LSU, Oklahoma), and the Longhorns have wins over fellow 6-3 programs Oklahoma State and Kansas State. In addition, Texas has a convincing win over 8-1 Louisiana Tech. With back-to-back games upcoming against Iowa State and Baylor, the Longhorns will either cement themselves in my Top 25, or will quickly fall out again.

23.) Oklahoma State

The Cowboys best win is over Kansas State back on Sept. 28, and two of their three losses came against ranked opponents. With very few viable resumes this low in the rankings, that was enough to earn the Cowboys a spot. Oklahoma State will be favored in each of their next two games against Kansas and West Virginia.

24.) Kansas State

Three 6-3 Big 12 teams ranked at the bottom of my rankings may seem odd, but name me another three-loss team that has as impressive of a win as the Wildcats’ victory over Top 10-ranked Oklahoma. The reason why Kansas State is behind the Longhorns and Cowboys is both of those teams beat the Wildcats. Still, Kansas State has a couple nice wins on their resume this season, including a victory over an SEC team in Mississippi State. All three of the Wildcats’ losses have come against ranked opponents.

25.) Appalachian State

After being booted from my rankings last week – following a loss to Georgia Southern – the Mountaineers return at No. 25. This was aided by San Diego State’s loss to Nevada over the weekend, but also has a lot to do with Appalachian State’s 20-15 victory over South Carolina. The Gamecocks haven’t had a great season, but they reside in the SEC and beat Top 5 Georgia in overtime this season. The Mountaineers are 8-1 as they travel to Georgia State this coming Saturday in a matchup of the top two contenders of the Sunbelt conference’s East division.
