Saints’ Cameron Jordan voted top-10 DE by peers, executives, and coaches

Cameron Jordan continues to get the respect he deserves, ranking as one of ESPN’s top-10 edge rushers with input from players, coaches, and execs, via @RossJacksonNOLA:

Every NFL offseason endless top-10 lists are released. But one of the most highly-anticipated series is ESPN’s positional top-10 releases which include voting results from NFL players, executives, and coaches. This year’s series kicked off with the edge rushers, where New Orleans Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan made the cut yet again, clocking in at No. 10.

Staff writer Jeremy Fowler quoted an NFC scout who said of Jordan: “Until he shows tangible drop-off, like some of these younger guys who haven’t had nearly the production despite getting all the attention from protections like he does — I’d say he hasn’t fallen off,”

Jordan finished the 2021 season with 12.5 sacks after not notching even his first until Week 7. That season marks his tenth-straight year with 7.5 or more sacks. It’s a feat only achieved by a few players, most of which are now in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Jordan might have had a slower start to the season with so much turnover on the defensive line early in the year, but he finished the year strong amassing 8.5 sacks in the last four games. That burst took place after missing the Week 14 bout with the New York Jets due to COVID-19 protocols.

Jordan impresses out on the edge not just as a pass rusher, but as versatile and complete defender. Fowler added, “Some coaches and scouts are partial to Jordan’s all-around game. He ranked No. 2 among defensive ends in disrupted dropbacks (22.5), he has produced double-digit sacks in four of the past five years and he’s great against the run. In fact, Jordan’s 33.5% run stop win rate is the highest among players on this list.”

Just behind Jordan, former Saints 217 draft selection Trey Hendrickson was noted an honorable mention. Fowler detailed that the battle for the No. 10 spot was a tight race between the former teammates. The Saints defensive line should start full strength and with confidence in the defensive backfield behind it. Jordan has ranked as high as No. 5 on this list in the past, we’ll see if he can push high into the top-10 with another fantastic performance in 2022.

Wisconsin makes top 10 for three-star 2023 EDGE Brad Spence

Wisconsin football made the top 10 for three-star 2023 edge-rusher Brad Spence on Friday night:

On Friday night, three-star 2023 edge-rusher Brad Spence announced his top 10 schools on Twitter and the Wisconsin Badgers made the cut.

Related: Wisconsin makes top four list for 2023 QB Lincoln Kienholz

Spence plays for Klein Forest High School in Houston, Texas, and the Badgers offered him back on April 7th. Alongside Wisconsin in Spence’s top 10 are Texas, Arkansas, Utah, Mississippi State, Arizona State, Missouri, Cal, Nebraska and Duke.

Hopefully, the Badgers can land the No. 60 EDGE in the country per 247Sports Composite, but they will face significant competition including from his home state Longhorns.

Gators crack top 10 for this in-state 4-star wide receiver

There’s still work to do to land this blue-chip receiver, but Florida has at least made Tyler Williams’ top 10.

The Florida Gators last got a chance to host four-star Lakeland (Florida) wide receiver [autotag]Tyler Williams[/autotag] for the Orange and Blue game. The blue-chip recruit seemed to be fairly interested in the Gators following that trip and now he’s included UF in his latest top 10.

Williams penned a letter to his mother, Shanteria, in the Lakeland Ledger on Mother’s Day thanking her for all her support over the years and going into short detail about each of his 10 finalists. With Florida, it’s the attention and straightforwardness that sticks out.

“Just with the new coaching staff, from Day 1, the communication has been great,” Williams wrote. “They check up on me all the time. They keep it honest. I feel like their WR room gets an equal amount of playing time. They really spread it out throughout the room.”

Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Syracuse, USC and USF are the other programs still in the hunt. Georgia and Clemson are considered the leaders right now, but there’s still plenty of time for another team to spice things up. He’ll visit Clemson on an official visit on June 3 and then heads to Georgia the following week. Ole Miss might get a September visit, but Williams’ schedule is hard to crack with his AAU basketball tournaments competing for time.

The expectation is for Williams to commit midseason and enroll early after signing in December. Florida still has time to woo the elite receiver, but Billy Napier and Co. need to pick up the pace over the summer to beat out the other Power Five programs involved.

The 247Sports composite ranks Williams as the No. 190 overall recruit in the class of 2023 and No. 25 among receivers. The Gators have a history of landing elite talent out of Lakeland. Could Williams be the next?

4-star DL recruit names Florida in top 10, can’t wait to return

Could an official visit to the Swamp be up next for this South Carolina four-star recruit?

Florida made the top 10 for four-star defensive lineman [autotag]Xzavier McLeod[/autotag] on Friday.

The Camden, South Carolina recruit made the announcement on social media, listing Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon and South Carolina as the other programs still in the hunt.

The Bulldogs will host him on Monday and Tuesday, and that should be it for McLeod’s spring schedule, according to 247Sports. With his options cut down to 10 schools, it’s time to figure out which ones will be getting official visits. LSU is in line to get one of those visits and Florida could be school No. 2 on the list.

“I love the facilities,” McLeod said. “When I was down there, I had coach  Napier say there were getting a new facility, so I am looking forward to seeing that. I can’t wait to get down there, probably for an official in the near future. I just can’t wait to get down there once again.”

The Gators hosted McLeod on April 2 and defensive line coach [autotag]Sean Spencer[/autotag] was able to spend some time with him in the film room. McLeod left with a good idea of how he would fit into UF’s scheme and thinks there’s room to make an early impact.

247Sports has a few crystal balls logged for McLeod in favor of the Gamecocks, with the most recent coming at the end of February. South Carolina certainly holds some weight in this race being 30 minutes away, but the SEC’s heavyweights might get him to leave his home state.

McLeod is ranked No. 115 overall in the class of 2023 by 247Sports and is also No. 14 among defensive linemen. The composite rankings are a bit less favorable at Nos. 170 and 25, respectively.

Auburn Gymnastics sets beam record, wins top 10 matchup with Missouri

Another record performance for Auburn

Auburn gymnastics threw down the best beam score in program history and picked up a top 10 win over No. 9 Missouri 197.575-196.275 Friday night.

Gabby McLaughlin hit a career-high 9.975 on beam to lead No. 7 Auburn to a record-breaking 49.625 performance. Cassie Stevens and Piper Smith also set new career-highs as five Auburn gymnasts scored a 9.9 or better.

The Tigers 197.575 was short of the program record 197.750 that they put up last week. But this week’s performance is the highest home score this season and the third highest in program history.

Auburn was also down regular starter Aria Brusch who should be back competing in the next couple weeks.

Outside of beam, Auburn also had a strong performance on floor. Sophia Groth set a new career high with a 9.925 to share the event title with Suni Lee.

Drew Watson won vault with a 9.925, while Lee and Missouri’s Amari Celestine tied with a 9.900 on bars.

Lee won the all-around title with a 39.575

Auburn will travel to Athens, Georgia next Friday to compete against Georgia 6:30 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.

Who were the top defensive players for the LSU Tigers in 2021?

Who were the top defenders for LSU?

Earlier in the season, it felt like there were going to be issues on the defensive side of the ball. Not a shocking development based on how the unit performed in 2020. Bo Pelini was replaced by Daronte Jones after Ed Orgeron whiffed on Marcus Freeman.

Following the open week when the team was coming off a loss to Ole Miss, they flipped the switch. A conversation with Orgeron’s friend Lane Kiffin just might have been the difference. They switched to a 3-4 defense that utilized more pressure on blitzes. They held Alabama to just 20 points, Arkansas to 16 points, and Texas A&M to just 24 points. In today’s college football world you will take that every single time.

Who would you say was the best defender of 2021? You would be hardpressed to find anyone who wouldn’t start with linebacker Damone Clark, who is a finalist for the Butkus Award.

Looking at the regular season grades for LSU, here is how they graded out on Pro Football Focus:

Ranking the top head coaching jobs in college football

Here is how we view the top coaching jobs in FBS

With so much conversation surrounding the current head coach situation on the Bayou, we revisit the conversation of head coaching gigs in college football.

Is the gig at Baton Rouge a top 10 job in college football? We will get to the full breakdown shortly. I find it interesting in Pete Thamel’s recent article regarding the future vacancy for the Tigers that he mentioned two high-profile coaches. James Franklin of Penn State and Lane Kiffin of Ole Miss.

Would either coach work on the Bayou? If Franklin can breathe life into a Vanderbilt program, he would absolutely work in Death Valley. With each top job, he appears to be mentioned. Shows the level of respect he has across the league. Lane Kiffin would be an entertaining hire for athletic director Scott Woodward, who is not afraid to throw money at a problem.

[lawrence-related id=26708]

Kiffin took over Ole Miss in 2020 and produced a 5-5 record, this year through four games the Rebels are 3-1 and among the top 25 in both polls. He is a character and many fans would probably love him. Not to mention he would be able to recruit and the offense wouldn’t suffer in the way it has as of late. A conversation for another day.

[listicle id=26607]

When looking at the top coaching jobs in FBS, there are three jobs that don’t quite make the top 10.

  • Michigan Wolverines
  • Auburn Tigers
  • Texas A&M Aggies

Here is how I break down my top 10 coaching jobs in college football.

Longhorns surge into top 10 of PFF’s power rankings after Week 1

PFF has Texas jumping into the top 10.

After blowing the No. 23 Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns out of the water in Week 1, the Longhorns are gaining a lot of respect in the college football world.

While the AP or coaches poll’s have yet to be released, national publications such as Bleacher Report and Pro Football Focus have released their own rankings. The common theme? Texas is trending upwards.

In a very convincing win, the Longhorns overmatched Louisiana winning by 20 points and really looked the part of a team ready to make noise. The quarterback play of redshirt freshman Hudson Card, who completed 14-of-21 passes for 224 yards and accounted for three total touchdowns, was a great start to the young gunslinger’s career.

Texas also got monster performances from running back Bijan Robinson who had over 170 all-purpose yards along with two touchdowns, and wide receiver Jordan Whittington contributed seven catches for 113 yards and one touchdown. It proved to be Whittington’s breakout performance as a Longhorn due to being injury plagued his first two seasons on campus.

The defense played extremely well, as they were getting consistent pressure on Louisiana quarterback Levi Lewis, sacking him four times while only giving up 76 yards rushing. The best part of the Texas’ defensive performance was that they were actually able to bring ball carriers down, as they only missed eight tackle attempts the whole game, which was a season best in 2020.

The performances on both sides of the ball are a major factor as to why many are buying stock in the Texas football program, and it also helped that eight top 25 teams suffered losses to open the season. While the AP Poll viewed Texas as the No. 21 team,  Bleacher Report originally had the Longhorns at No. 17 and moved them one spot to No. 16, but PFF felt much more confident in Texas.

PFF’s rankings saw Texas skyrocket all the way to No. 8 in the country, which would be tied for their best ranking dating back to Week 9 of the 2018 season when the Longhorns came in at No. 6.

The Longhorns cannot buy into any of the hype otherwise they will fall flat on their face, and this week’s road matchup against Arkansas will be a great test to see if they can be consistent.
