Auburn Gymnastics sets beam record, wins top 10 matchup with Missouri

Another record performance for Auburn

Auburn gymnastics threw down the best beam score in program history and picked up a top 10 win over No. 9 Missouri 197.575-196.275 Friday night.

Gabby McLaughlin hit a career-high 9.975 on beam to lead No. 7 Auburn to a record-breaking 49.625 performance. Cassie Stevens and Piper Smith also set new career-highs as five Auburn gymnasts scored a 9.9 or better.

The Tigers 197.575 was short of the program record 197.750 that they put up last week. But this week’s performance is the highest home score this season and the third highest in program history.

Auburn was also down regular starter Aria Brusch who should be back competing in the next couple weeks.

Outside of beam, Auburn also had a strong performance on floor. Sophia Groth set a new career high with a 9.925 to share the event title with Suni Lee.

Drew Watson won vault with a 9.925, while Lee and Missouri’s Amari Celestine tied with a 9.900 on bars.

Lee won the all-around title with a 39.575

Auburn will travel to Athens, Georgia next Friday to compete against Georgia 6:30 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.

This date in Warriors history: Klay Thompson splashes record-breaking 14 triples vs. Bulls in 2018

After Klay Thompson tallied 52 points in three quarters against the Bulls on October 29, 2018, “Headband Klay” was born.

As the basketball world waits for the start of the NBA draft, Warriors Wire is rewinding through Golden State’s history to highlight memorable matchups and standout performances.

In 2018, “Headband Klay” was born.

October 29, 2018

In an uncharacteristic swing, Klay Thompson started the 2018-19 season on a cold streak. Through seven games, the five-time All-Star did not reach 20 points in scoring. During that stretch, the Splash Brother especially struggled from beyond the arc.

Thompson was shooting 13.9% from long distance, only making just 5-of-36 3-point attempts. However, his performance against the Chicago Bulls served as a quick reminder of why he’s one of the greatest shooters in NBA history.

The Washington State product exploded for a season-high 52 points on 18-of-29 shooting from the field with four rebounds and two steals. On his way to 52 points, Thompson torched the Bulls with a record-breaking 14 3-pointers.

With his 14-of-24 performance from beyond the arc, Thompson surpassed his teammate Steph Curry’s NBA record of 13 3-pointers in a single game.

Adding to his impressive feat, Thompson sat out the fourth quarter, only playing 26 minutes.

Via @NBAHistory on Twitter:

After cutting his forehead in the second half, Thompson donned a rare yellow headband look for his final 3-pointer in the third quarter. Thompson’s new fashion statement quickly took over as the headliner in the performance forever remembered as “the headband game.”

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes continues to break NFL records

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ performance on Sunday helped him leave his mark on NFL history yet again.

If you’re in need of an indication that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is back and as good as ever, this should do the trick.

Mahomes made his 25th career start on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. It also marked his return from a kneecap dislocation. Despite the Chiefs’ loss, Mahomes completed 36-of-50 passes for 446 yards and three touchdowns.

A lot of NFL records have crumpled at the hands of Mahomes, and he added several more on Sunday. According to NFL Communications, Mahomes now holds the record for the most passing yards through 25 career games with 8,007. Hall of Famer Kurt Warner is the only player who comes close to that in 25 games, with just under 7,400 passing yards.

That isn’t the only record Mahomes surpassed. He also passed Dolphins legend Dan Marino for the most passing touchdowns through 25 career games with 68. Marino had 65 in his first 25 career games.

And that’s not all. According to Chiefs team reporter Matt McMullen, Mahomes has the highest passer rating and the most completions in his first 25 starts of any player in NFL history. He’s essentially leading all quarterbacks in four of the most meaningful passing categories through 25 games.

Finally, Sunday’s game marked Mahomes’ 16th with at least 300 passing yards. It was enough to surpass Warner for the most games with at least 300 passing yards in a player’s first 25 games.

You won’t see Mahomes bragging about these individual accolades, especially when the Chiefs aren’t winning. Still, it’s awe-inspiring how every time Mahomes steps on the football field he manages to break another record and etch his name in the NFL history books. You can rest assured this won’t be the last time you hear about Mahomes surpassing a record. The next one may even happen as early as Week 11 against the Chargers in Mexico City.
